Bullying addressedBullying in our schools is a fact, and anyschool who says it does not have this prob-lem is in denial, says Liesl Schoonraad, founder of a youth upliftment programmeaimed at addressing bullying in schools.

It isdue to thehighrateofbullying inschoolsthat Schoonraad, an architectural consultantfrom Jason Lucas Master Thatchers, ap-proached her colleagues to adopt the youth up-liftment programme she had started in 2013.“I am so grateful to Jason Lucas who accept-

ed this proposal. I did not expect anything lessfromhim as he has a very big heart and under-stands the future iswithouryouth,”Liesl said.“We feel strongly that we need to give back toour communities and the power is with ouryouth.”Shestartedvisitingschools lastyeartospeak

about bullying, and has managed to inspiremanychildren to take control of their lives andbe the best they can be.At the age of 40, Liesl completed the Robben

Island to Big Bay swim, became the first wom-an in South Africa to pull a 10 ton truck andthe first woman in the world to pull a Dakotaaircraft. With this background, as well as experienc-

ing all types of abuse in the past, she managesto give children hope, proving that nothing isimpossible, children need not ever give up ondreams and that one can know you are strongenough to stand up against bullying.“Bullying is only amore acceptableword for

abuse,” she says, adding that her inner powerhas led her to find a physical power, and thatshe now believes strongly that it is the strongwho lift others, while theweak try to push oth-ers down.Liesl says it is not uncommon for bullies to

approachher after a talk saying that theywantto stop beingwho they are. Victims of bullyingalso lineup to share their story andask advice.Lieslhasoftenrevisited schools todo follow-uptalks with smaller groups.Jason LucasMaster Thatchers would like to

invite schools to contact Liesl to make an ap-pointment to visit their school. The talk isroughly 45 minutes long.If schools would like referrals from princi-

pals ora socialworker, theyaremore thanwel-come to contact Jason Lucas Master Thatch-ers.Contact Liesl at liesl@jasonlucasmaster-

Stay safe by getting toknow your neighboursAlocalprivatesecuritycompanyhasurgedresidents to take a unified approach tocrimeprevention in theirneighbourhoods.“In our experience, wehave seen success

in this regard in communities where resi-dentsareactively involved, andknowtheirneighbours and neighbourhoods,” saidRob Dale, managing director of ADT Secu-rity Western Cape.Neighbours aremost likely to be the first

to identify a possible problem in the streetor at a home. Dale said that awareness ofyour neighbours’ daily routines and thoseof the domestic staff, as well as the sur-roundings of the neighbourhood, makes iteasier to notice suspicious people, vehiclesand activity.“Weencourageneighbours tosharesecu-

rity tips. It isalso important toreport suspi-cious individuals, or vehicles, to securityproviders or the police as thiswill enhancetheir understanding of activity in the areaand implement effective crime preventiontactics.”Dale suggested that neighbours regular-

ly discuss ways to keep their families andhomes safe.Healsoproposed the following:

. Exchange cell phone numbers so youare able to contact each other when neces-sary.

. Agree to keep an eye on one another’sproperties and to contact the other aboutsuspicious people or when something ap-pears out of place.

. If either or both of you travel often ortakes regular holidays, talk about doingsmall chores for each other while you areaway; suchas removingmail fromthepost-box daily and switching on inside and out-door lights so that your home does not ap-pear unoccupied.Dale said it is also very important to in-

troduce your children to your neighbours.“Agree to keep an eye on each other’s

children when they are playing in the gar-den. Also, teach your children that if theyare ever home alone and feel unsafe, theycan go over to one of these neighbours andwait there until you can be contacted andcan come home.“By working together as each other’s

eyes and ears, you, your neighbours, thepolice and security providers can makeyour suburb a no-go zone for criminals.”

“As ek vroeër moes studeer souek dalk spyt wees oor my keuse.

Sima sal steeds voortgaan methaar program by MFM en haarloopbaan as sangeres.

“Ek het ’n jaar en ’n half terugby MFM aangesluit en die Mor-ning Glory-program van 03:00 tot

06:00 aangebied.“Ek was ook aangestel as nuus-

Simangele ‘Sima’ Mashazi

Check your skin regularlyProtecting your skin against theharmful raysof the sun is onlyhalfof thebattle to prevent cancer. Theother half is doing regular skinchecks to ensure you nip any wor-rying skin issues in the bud early.

Peter Jordan, principal officer ofFedhealth, says you should examineyour skin head to toe once a month, looking for any suspicious lesions.“Self-examscanhelpyoudetectpoten-tial skin cancers early enough to becompletely cured. If melanoma, thedeadliest formofskincancer, isrecog-nised and treated early it is almost al-ways curable, but if it is not, the can-cer can advance and spread to otherparts of the body where it becomeshard to treat and can be fatal.”Oftenresemblingmoles, themajori-

ty of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-coloured,pink, red, purple, blue or white.“Finding an atypical mole will oftengive you the first clue that some-thing’s amiss. That’s why it’s impor-tant to know your skin very well andto recognise any changes in themoleson your body.”One strategy is to look for the AB-

CDEsignsofmelanoma. If youseeoneor more of these, make an appoint-ment with a physician immediately.

) A is for asymmetry. If you drawa line through the mole, the two

halves should match.) B is for borders since the borders

of an early melanoma tend to be une-ven.

) C is for colour since anotherwarningsignal is ifanumberofdiffer-ent shades of brown, tan or black ap-pear in one mole, or also become red, blue or some other colour.

) Dis fordiameter. Melanomasareusually larger in diameter than thesize of a pencil’s eraser (6 mm), buttheymay sometimes be smallerwhenfirst detected.

) E is for evolving. Any change insize, shape, colour, elevation or an-other trait, or any new symptom suchas bleeding, itching or crusting, points to danger.“As a general rule, to spot either

melanomas or non-melanoma skincancers, take note of any new molesor growths, and any existing growthsthat begin to grow or change signifi-cantly in anyway. Lesions thatchange, itch, bleed or don’t heal arealso alarm signals,” he adds.Another strategy physicians devel-

oped is the Ugly Duckling sign, basedon the concept that these melanomaslook different compared to surround-ing moles.Once a melanoma is diagnosed, it

has to be removed. The great advanc-es that had been made in surgerythroughtheyears, allowformuchlesstissue that has to be removed, andsmaller scars.Sunprotection remains essential to

skin cancer prevention as about 90%of non-melanoma skin cancers and65% of melanomas are associatedwith exposure to UV radiation fromthe sun. “Always protect yourself andstay safe,” concludes Jordan.

Amanipulated photograph designed to em-phasise that the sun protection you applywhile you’re young, will affect what you looklike when you’re older.

Make the rate hike work for you – even if times are toughLast week theGazette reported thatthe interest rate hike of half a per-cent is good news for savers. But what about consumers with

debt, and how does one fit the hikeinto abudget that alsohas to absorba higher fuel price?John Manyike, head of financial

education at Old Mutual, says thatwhile the increase came largely asa surprise, South Africans can usethis as an opportunity to reviewtheir financial plans and to buildwealth.Ask a financial adviser to help

you ride the rising cost of living. An accredited financial adviser

can help you review your monthlybudget and identify things you cando without. You could consider lift clubs or

public transport if you drive towork.Makeadjustmentsonyourspend-

ing habits. For example, take alunchbox towork insteadofbuyingtakeaways. You will be surprised how much

you can save this way, and you canuse this money to reduce your debtfaster by paying extra. This couldeven close the gap caused by the in-terest rate hike.Even if the rate goes down, don’t

reduce your monthly repayments.Manyike explains: “Plan to get

rid of short-term debt, start savingand pay extra into your homebond,if you have one.”The principle behind this, says

Manyike, is compound interest. Itspowerwasemphasisedbynoneoth-

er than Albert Einstein: “Com-pound interest is the eighthwonderof the world. He who understandsit, earns it... he who doesn’t, paysit.”“The longer you’re in short-term

debt, the longeryou’repayinginter-est to someoneelse, either thebank,or a clothing chain or a short-termlender.“The increase in interest rates

means you’ll pay even more.“So it’s worth sucking up the

short-term pain to free yourself ofshort-termdebt.Formanyofusthatinvolves doing without nice-to-haves for a while.”Commit to saving.Akeytobuildingpersonalwealth

in general is to adopt the basic prin-ciples of saving money before you

spend it.“Save first and spend the rest,

rather than spend first and save therest,” explains Manyike.Watch out for store cardswith in-

troductory vouchers worth hun-dreds of rands. The interest on suchaccounts is always expensive.Online shopping can also lead to

trouble: if you’re trying to get outof debt – or stay out – ask yourselfhard questions before you buy.Do you really need an item or

would that money be better spenton nibbling away your credit-carddebt?Just because a bargain is availa-

ble doesn’t mean you have to buyit.“A far more basic step though is

simply to knowhowmuchyou earn

and what it’s spent on.“Establishing that already puts

you in a better position than manySouth Africans, including thosewhoearnmorethanyoubutarestillalways short of money.”

)Arrange automatic deductionsfrom your wages or salary so thatyou’re committed to saving everymonth, even if it’s only a smallamount.

) Set tangible, realistic goals forwhat you want your money toachieve.

)Stayincontrol. Identify thebig-gest threats to buildingwealth (likeyour credit card or a loan that car-ries lots of interest) and prioritiseeliminating them.

) Unleash the power of interestthrough patience.
