‘Wynengel’ metpositiewe uitkykop bedryf

’n Mens

welkomend, ont-spanne, natuurliken erg Kaaps is.

Have you done a SWOT analysis?I read on M-Web News that the presidentof ESPN Sport considers video games notto be a sport. He said: “It’s not a sport, it’sa competition.”

Heconsidersvideogamesinthesameleagueas chess and hotdog eating competitions. Bytheway,it is interestingthatsnookerisconsid-ered a sport.

None the less, being in business is also notsport, yet every business has competition.

My question therefore is: “How do you goabout competing in a competitive businessmarket?”

Do you manage to prosper amidst all the

competition out there? Do you have a plan onhowto“outwit, outplayandoutsmart”others –as they say in Survivor, or do you only try tokeep up with the competition, more or less?

Perhaps it is time to do a SWOT analysis foryour business? It is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Strengths and weaknesses are internal fac-tors that you can control. Perhaps the locationof your business is better than that of competi-tors with ample parking compared to theirs. Then emphasise this strength when advertis-ing.

Perhaps your business’s weakness is that itruns low on cash reserves which limit your

abilitytoexpandyourbusinessoper-ation.

Thenyouwillhavetostrictlyman-age spending or look for extra in-come streams.

Opportunities and threats arethings outside your organisationand over which you do not have con-trol.

You should always be on the look-out for opportunities that may occurin the environment or in your lineof business.

Threats are happenings in the economy orthe environment which, if you do not attend

to or take care of it, may seriouslyharm the organisation, for exam-ple new legislation or a sharp risein interest rates or fuel prices, etc.

Strengthsandopportunitiesarehelpful for advancing your busi-ness while weaknesses andthreats contain the risk of beingharmful if not attended to appro-priately.

Therefore do a SWOT analysisand use it as a tool for better man-agement.

Stellenbosch producesworld para-cycling champHandcyclists Ernst van Dyk ofStellenbosch and Pieter du Preezbecame South Africa’s newestworld champions in epic races at2014 UCI Para-Cycling RoadWorld Championships, whichtook place in Greenville, SouthCarolina (USA) from 28August to1 September.

“Supapiet” Du Preez (Pretoria)was the first to be crowned worldchampion after his H1 category30,6 km road race, which comprisedthree laps in Greenville.

The race finished at around 15:20South African time on Monday (1September) and some local fanswereable to witness the victory first handas the event was streamed live on-line.

Followingon fromaworld first fin-ishbyaquadriplegic triathlete in theAustralian Iron Man competition inDecember last year, it has been DuPreez’s dream to earn the worldchampion jersey. It is an achieve-ment only made possible by extraor-dinary commitment to physicaltraining and mental preparation forthe world’s toughest para-cyclingcontest.

Using only the strength of hisshoulders to propel his bike, DuPreezcrossed the finish line ina timeof 01:22:33, with Finnish rider TeppoPolvi in second place (01:29:15) andKiwi Timothy Williams third(01:29:41).

Later on in the day (at 21:00 SAtime), Ernst vanDykmadehis inten-tions clear when he beat his arch-ri-val andcurrentH5WorldChampion,Allesandro Zanardi, in a sprint fin-ish to the line after 61,2 kmof racing. The grand finale was predicted to beVan Dyk’s toughest ever. Timing hischallenge perfectly, Van Dyk usedthe short uphill climb just before thedownhill final straight to power pastthe Australian, Stuart Tripp. Hemanaged to drop Zanardi from his

slipstream in the process. Zanardihad struggled slightly with theclimbs during the race. There wasnothing to stop the powerful SouthAfrican from sprinting to victory.

As in the case of DuPreez, 2014 hasbeen a perfect year forVanDyk,whoalso won his 10th Boston Marathonthis year in his racing wheelchair.

Other excellent performances inthe road race were produced bySouth Africa’s Justine Asher (HoutBay) who was 1st in her H2 hand-cy-cle category, and Stuart McCreadie(Hout Bay) who finished 4th in hisextremelycompetitiveH3class.Thisis McCreadie’s best World Champi-onship performance and follows hisbronze medal win in the UCI WorldCup in Spain a month ago.

TheSouthAfrican tricyclistsMad-re Carinus (Stellenbosch) and Ge-orge Rex (Gauteng) finished 5th and

4th in their races respectively. Theirteammate, Goldy Fuchs (Stellen-bosch), finished in 9th place, whilstthe promising youngster YusthinLintnaar (Stellenbosch) was unfor-tunate to crash very early in the raceafter collidingwithanAmericanrid-er.

“This best ever World Champion-shipperformancebyaSouthAfricanteam would not have been possiblewithout the highly professional sup-port provided by the managementteam,” said Cycling SA Para-cyclingCommission director, Dr MikeBurns. “Team manager JC van derWalt, national coach Elrick Kulsen, high performance manager TomPaulsen, team mechanic Pieter Jan-sen and soigneur Pablo Garcia, en-sured that the riders were set up inevery way to deliver the results thatwere achieved,” he said.
