    SIMATIC Industrial Software

    STEP 7 Professional

    Product Brief November 2000

The costs for automating a project arebecoming increasingly dependent onthe engineering input. Modern engi-neering tools provide an effective pos-sibility for saving costs in this sector. Acombination of application-orientedsoftware tools guarantees maximumproductivity even with complex auto-mation tasks. We therefore recommendSTEP 7 Professional. This comprisesthe proven programming languagesLAD, FBD and STL, supplemented bythree powerful engineering tools:

S7-GRAPH for the graphical pro-gramming of sequential controls

S7-SCL, the high-level language withwhich even highly complex tasks canbe solved without problem

S7-PLCSIM for offline simulation ofyour automation solution

STEP 7 Professional thus contains allprogramming languages complyingwith the international standardIEC 61131. This multi-vendor standard-ization makes a major contribution tocost savings with software engineering.

You can use STEP 7 Professional to

configure and program both theSIMATIC S7 and C7 PLC-based con-trollers as well as the SIMATIC WinACcontroller for PC-based automation. You can therefore freely select yourhardware platform, and can even usethe same tool with mixed configurations(e.g. PC for central control tasks withsubordinate small control systems).

This description presents current inno-vations for the basic STEP 7 tools, anddescribes the facilities additionally pro-vided by the engineering tools.

    STEP 7 V5 - New functions

    New with the LAD/FBD/STL manager

With Version 5, program developmentin LAD, FBD and STL has beenimproved even further:

    Selection list for symbols

When editing the links, the symbolnames no longer have to be typed in byhand. You can simply select them froma list by clicking with the mouse. Youcan also create or adjust a symbol def-

inition at this point without having toopen the whole symbol table (Fig. 1).

    Improved usability

Multi-stage "undo" in both directionsusing icons

Cut & paste for more than one net-work

    Display of subnetworks in differentcolors

Lasso function to select elements Fast adding of symbols, blocks,

instructions and FC/FB calls usingthe "empty box"

"Tooltips" on the contacts with com-plete symbol information

    New with the SIMATIC Manager

    Block consistency test

If the interfaces or the code of individ-ual blocks have to be modified or sup-plemented during program develop-ment or subsequently, the requiredinput for the corrections may beextremely high. The block consistencytest handles a large portion of this workfor you. In the case of blocks whoseconsistency cannot be corrected auto-matically, the function guides you to the

positions to be changed in the associ-ated editor where you can carry out therequired modifications. All block incon-sistencies are eliminated step-by-step,and the blocks then compiled.

    Language support

This function is particularly interestingfor customers dealing in export. Thefunction supports the creation and han-dling of project texts in several lan-guages. The texts to be translated areexported from STEP 7, processedusing an ASCII editor or spreadsheetprogram (e.g. MS EXCEL), and subse-

quently imported back into STEP 7.

A project is then available in differentlanguages. You can switch betweenthe various languages in the SIMATICManager.

The following texts can be stored inseveral languages:

Block titles and comments Network titles and comments Line comments from STL programs Comments from symbol tables,

tables for variable declarations,user-defined data types and datablocks

Comments, status names and transi-tion names in HiGraph

programs Extensions to step names and com-ments in S7-GRAPH programs

Message texts generated by STEP 7 System text libraries

Saving of project data on the CPU

In addition to the actual applicationprogram, the complete project datacan be saved on the CPUs memorycard.

These data can be simply read for ser-vicing purposes. They need not bestored on the programming device. The danger that different versions

could be interchanged is thereforeeliminated. This function was previ-ously only supported by the CPUs ofthe S7-400. It will be available soon forfurther SIMATIC CPUs.

    Leading symbols

Simplify adaptation to new addresses. You have the choice whether the sym-bolic or absolute address should beleading when changes are made. If thesymbolic address is leading, it makes itparticularly easy to transfer an existingprogram to different hardware with dif-ferent addresses (Fig. 2).

    New with the hardware configuration

    Direct monitoring/control of modu-les

Inputs and outputs of the configuredinput/output modules can beaddressed directly without having toselect the application. The inputs/out-puts can then be monitored (with cyclicupdating) or controlled. Thus parame-terization and testing of the hardwarecan be carried out in one operation.

    STEP 7 V5 - New functions (continued)

New with monitoring and control ofvariables

    Improved usability

Representation of status using sym-bols to provide improved perception

Insertion/deletion of lines Switching individual table lines to

    ineffective

    Modification of number formats forrepresentation

    Comprehensive context menus anddirect help

Table of variables can always bekept in the foreground

    Identification of forced variables

    System diagnostics

The function "Signal system errors"offers a convenient method for display-ing the diagnostics information pro-vided by the controllers hardwarecomponents in the form of messages. The required blocks and messagetexts are automatically generated by

STEP 7. It is only necessary to load thegenerated blocks into the CPU. Trans-fer of the diagnostics texts to SIMATICHMIdevices does not require anyprogramming. This functionality is stillin preparation for a number of SIMATICHMI devices.

    Import/export interface to ASCII fileformat

To date, it has been possible to importand export the following in ASCII fileformat:

    Programs (since V3),

Symbol definition (since V3)and now also: Hardware configuration (from V5.0).

This means that all project data cannow be electronically processed, e.g.to incorporate them into revision controlsystems or as an interface to CAE sys-tems such as SIGRAPH EMR. Theexport interface can also be used forbacking up data.

The import interface can also be usedto adjust the hardware configuration onsite, e.g. on setup. This means that youno longer need to overwrite the whole

    project, just the HW-Config file.

    STEP 7 V5 Routing

The new routing function means thatprogramming can be carried outacross network limits. A programmingdevice which is connected to the CPUor communications module via an MPIcable can now also program and main-tain the devices (masters) connected

to the CPU via PROFIBUS-DP (seeFig. 3). This means:

Easier to operate Centralized programming Centralized data backup Increased TeleService functionality.

    S7-SCLThe high-level language for S7-300/400 and C7

    Application

S7-SCL (Structured Control Language)is a high-level language based on PAS-CAL for programmable controllers.

S7-SCL corresponds to the high-leveltext language ST (Structured Text)defined in DIN EN/IEC 61131-3.S7-SCL is particularly suitable for pro-gramming complex algorithms andmathematical functions, or for data pro-cessing tasks.

    S7-SCL permits:

Simple, fast program developmenthardly prone to errors by applicationof powerful language elements suchas IF...THEN...ELSE.

Improved comprehensibility by usingclear programs and improved struc-turing. The programs are then easyto modify and reuse.

Simplified program testing at highlanguage level using debugger.

The user is then able to formulate solu-tions for all automation tasks cost-

effectively and within a short time. The software can be used for allSIMATIC S7-300 (recommended fromCPU 314 onwards), SIMATIC S7-400and SIMATIC C7 automation systems.

    Principle of operation

S7-SCL programs are programmed asASCII sources and are therefore easyto import and export. The S7-SCL edi-tor provides various templates whichneed only be filled in.

Templates for blocks (e.g. functionblocks and data blocks)

Templates for block comments, parameters and constants Templates for control structures

(IF, CASE, FOR, WHILE, REPEAT)which contain the exact syntax.

Extremely efficient programming ispossible using these templates.

    Functions

S7-SCL has been assigned the BaseLevel certificate of PLCopen1)and pos-

sesses the following functionalities: Integral user interface with editor,

    compiler and debugger

Language elements from high-levellanguage programming, e.g. loops, alternative branches and branch dis-tributors.

S7-SCL blocks can be simplyexported into a CFC library.

PLC-typical language extensions,e.g. addressing of inputs and out-puts, or starting and scanning of tim-ers and counters.

Elementary and self-defined datatypes for clear structuring of userprograms. Symbols and commentsadditionally increase the clarity.

Full-symbol programming and sav-ing of the complete program in asource file.

Generation of an optimized code withonly a little compiler input.

S7-PLCSIMThe simulation tool for SIMATIC S7-300/400

    Introduction

Simulation systems effectively supportthe development of new products andthe productive use of these products, provided the computers exhibit therequired performance. In the world ofautomation, a simulated test environ-ment with associated PLC and processcan reduce the duration of the commis-sioning phase, thus reducing costs.

    If programming errors are detected

early, and if the software is debuggedand optimized prior to being loaded inthe plant, the programs will showhigher quality, and run much smoother.

Simulation systems can also be used totest edited programs prior to the pro-grams being loaded into the PCon-site.

In addition, S7-PLCSIM can assist youwhen converting from SIMATIC S5 toSIMATIC S7. Existing S5 programselected for future use in S7 can betested without an S7 PLC beingpresent. It is then possible to assess

whether the programs must be edited, and what the costs will be.

    Application

SIMATIC S7-PLCSIM is the simulationsystem in the world of Totally Inte-grated Automation. It is fully inte-grated in STEP 7 and provides asimulated plant environment. It lets youtest user blocks and programs forS7-300and S7-400on a program-ming device or PC even without exist-ing target hardware, i.e. without CPU,signal modules etc. You can simulateonline access operations and use the

test functions of the programming toolsjust as if a CPU were present. Theentire program test can be done in theprogrammers office.

The following programming languagesand engineering tools operate in con-junction with S7-PLCSIM:

LAD, FBD, STL S7-GRAPH S7-HiGraph S7-SCL CFC (and SFC) S7-PDIAG WinCC (installed locally)

    Principle of operation

S7-PLCSIM processes the user pro-gram like a real CPU. Compared to areal CPU, you can choose between theoperating modes "Continuous opera-tion" and "Single step".

While the program is running, it is pos-sible to monitor and edit a number ofprocess variables (e.g. you can turn onor off arbitrary inputs and outputs).

    S7-PLCSIM additionally provideshuman-machine interface functionswith the built-in STEP 7 variable table(VAT).

    Interfacing to process simulation

The S7-ProSim interface lets you hookup an external process simulation sys-tem. This interface provides dynamicaccess to process variables.

S7-ProSim uses ActiveX control andcan thus operate with all ActiveX-capa-ble Windows applications, e.g. VisualBasic for Application, or Excel.

    Introduction

The purpose of the international stan-dard IEC 61131 is to produce world-wide, future-oriented standardization inthe sector of programmable control-lers. It has been accepted as the Euro-pean standard and the Germanstandard DIN EN 61131. It is thereforethe successor to various national stan-dards.

    IEC 61131-3 (continued)

    Criteria for standardized software

Documentation of elements gener-ated according to the standard

Definition of specific limits (e.g. sym-bol length, number of blocks)

Features can be implemented whichare not part of the standard

Elements which could be confusedwith the standard must not be imple-mented

    PLCopen

    Organization

On the basis of this standard, varioussuppliers and users of control and pro-gramming systems have joinedtogether in the international organiza-tion PLCopen which forces the use andspreading of programming accordingto IEC 61131.

Siemens is working actively withPLCopen, and has included PLC pro-gramming into the IEC 61131 standard.

The long-term goal of PLCopen is themulti-vendor portability of applicationprograms. Further PLCopen workinggroups are occupied with further com-ponents of the IEC 61131 standard(e.g. training or motion control).

Certification of the programming sys-tems from different vendors is animportant prerequisite for softwareportability.

    Four different compliance levels have

been defined by PLCopen for this pur-pose:

Base Level Cross Reusability Level Portability Level Full Compliance Level

Independent institutes assign therespective certificate following theapplication of test procedures.

STEP 7conforms with IEC 61131-3and is compatible with STEP 5

In the context of SIMATIC industrialsoftware, STEP 7 and the associatedengineering tools provide program-ming software for SIMATIC S7 which islargely in conformance with the stan-dard. In STEP 7, the programming lan-guages have been extended at variouspoints in accordance with the standardto offer users optimum programming

convenience and full utilization of theS7 controllers.

Furthermore, compatibility with STEP 5was of greater importance at certainpoints than compatibility with the stan-dard (especially in STL).

The following table contains the mostimportant information on compliancewith the standard. Points where STEP 7deviates from the standard, exhibitinga separate face, are explained in detail.

Exact information on compliance withthe standard is included in tabular formin a file which is part of the STEP 7

    product.

LAD, S7-GRAPH, S7-SCL and CFC STL Full Compliance Level

LAD conforms with LD S7-GRAPH conforms with SFC S7-SCL conforms with ST

    (certified according to PLCopen BaseLevel1))

CFC conforms with graphic program con-figuration

    1) PLCopen Cross Reusability Level availablesoon

Command syntax deviates occasionallyfrom IL;priority was compatibility with STEP 5. Asa result of the increasing program com-plexity, the significance of STL in thefuture will be reduced in favor of higher-level programming languages.

    Functionality of standard commandspresent

Basic command set of standardextended by machine-dependent com-mands (to utilize all application facilitiesprovided by the S7 controllers)

    Tasks

Deviation from standard because of com-patibility with STEP 5: mapping of taskson the organization blocks known fromS5

    Absolute addresses

Deviation from standard because of com-patibility with STEP 5: absoluteaddresses without identifier. Inputsaccording to the standard are accepted

(initial character %), but converted inSTEP 7 (no identifier). S7-SCL permitsuniform use of absolute addresses com-plying with the standards.

    Symbols

Symbolic addressing is possible withS7-SCL, CFC and in the source mode ofSTL. This is planned for LAD and FBD. Inaddition, direct decompilation of theapplication program from the machinecode is possible for LAD, FBD and in theincremental mode of STL. For this reason, programs are generated here with abso-lute addresses (e.g. I1.1) where symbolscan be superimposed for better readabil-

    ity.
