Day 12: TucsonPima Air & Space Museum, where history takes flight, is one of the largest air and space museums in the world. You’ll see more than 300 aircraft and spacecraft including many of the most historically significant and technically advanced craft ever produced, both from the United States and throughout the world.

From giant B-52s to the rare and unusual, such as the “Super Guppy” transport plane, they’re all here. You’ll see virtually every aircraft used in the Korean War and Vietnam, including a collection of the Russian MIG jet fighters, as well as modern combat aircraft still in use by today’s military.

This is also where you’ll be able to see President Kennedy’s Air Force One, and other presidential aircraft used by Presidents Nixon and Johnson, as well as many noteworthy commercial and civil aviation aircraft.

The facility includes a number of hangars. The Spirit of Freedom Hangar houses the more rare and important aircraft in the museum’s collection, including the Lockheed SR-71

“Blackbird”, and the very rare North American F-107.

Hangar 3 is dedicated to World War II aircraft. You’ll also view the Fi-156 “Storch,” a rare WWII German liaison aircraft. B

Day 13: TucsonThe 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (previously known as AMARC, the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center), is a joint service managed by the U. S. Air Force Material Command located in Tucson.

Often referred to as “the Boneyard”, AMARC is an aerospace storage and maintenance facility adjoining Davis-Monthan Air Force Base which services all branches of the U. S. military (Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Army), as well as other national agencies.

Typically controlling over 4,200 aircraft as well as many other types of military equipment, AMARC works very hard in promoting itself as not just a “Boneyard” and takes every opportunity in explaining how it operates its cost effective, tax saving operations. Many of the stored aircraft can be returned to an operational

status in a short period of time and there is a continual process of anti-corrosion and re-preservation work which keeps the aircraft in a stable condition during their stay.

The reason the Boneyard reference exists is due to other work that AMARC carries out, that of reclamation of spare parts and the eventual disposal of spent airframes. The facility can be divided into two distinct areas, the RIT (Reclamation Insurance Type) area located to the east side of Kolb Road is littered with aircraft in various states of completeness. The junkyard appearance belies the fact that these

aircraft are controlled by a process of careful part reclamation, both to a schedule and to ad-hoc requests. On careful examination many of these aircraft can be seen re-sealed to protect the remaining components from the dirt and heat.

This morning we’ll embark on an hour-and-a-half narrated motorcoach tour of the Boneyard.

Following the Boneyard tour and an “on-your-own” lunch break, we will board our deluxe motorcoach for the 384 mile run to Palm Springs.

An “on-your-own” dinner stop will be made en route.

Upon arrival we will check into the Hilton Palm Springs hotel, our home for the night. B

Day 14: Palm SpringsToday we will visit the Palm Springs Air Museum.

The Museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections of flyable WWII aircraft.

Some of the aircraft include the Boeing B17 - Flying Fortress, the Douglas SBD Dive Bomber, Curtiss P40 Hawk, MiG 21 Jet Bomber, and the Grumman F14 Tomcat.

We will board our motorcoach and travel to Los Angeles where we will check into the Double Tree by Hilton Los Angeles Downtown.

and climb into a full size version of the International Space Station’s Destiny Module. See Moon rocks, an Apollo space capsule, a Martian lander, and Carl Sagan’s turtleneck sweater!

Enjoy the best views on Boeing Field from the Museums Tower. Watch aircraft come and go while listening to live conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers. Monitor their flights and, if the weather is clear, enjoy the sight of Mt. Rainier, too!

We’ll return to our hotel for the final night of the tour.

Day 19: SeattleThe Boeing tour is one of Washington’s most popular attractions. You will go through the largest building in the world by volume, 472 million cubic feet of space, covering 98.3 acres. You can see 747, 767, and 777 airplanes in various stages of manufacture and flight test.

The Boeing tour begins with two short films, one a moving collage of aircraft built by Boeing, and the second a speeded-up film that shows the construction of a 747 from beginning to end. After the films, you will transfer by motorcoach to the factory entrance, where you will walk to the observation level above the factory floor. You will reboard the motorcoach and drive past the aircraft painting facility and some of the completed aircraft in various stages of testing.

Following our Boeing tour we’ll continue to SEA-TAC airport where you board your flights for home destinations. A stop will be made at the Amtrak station for persons who will be returning home by train.

Tour members who wish to stay another night before flying home can ask our America by Rail reservationist to book hotel space at extra cost.

BOEING FACTORY

THE SPRUCE GOOSE AT THE EVERGREEN AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM

“This was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. So much to see and do, and every-thing went smoothly since it was organized so well.”

Claudia H. Houston, TX

Now that you’ve read the itinerary, I trust you agree that this is truly a dream trip. To the best of my knowledge, our train tour is the only practical way to connect so many attractions. The key to rail is the number of miles covered overnight. America by Rail attracts 3,000 persons a year who enjoy the long-distance trains.

The first thing you’ll realize once on board one of the trains is the camaraderie that quickly permeates the fellow travelers. On this tour, you’ll be enjoying the company of fellow air and space enthusiasts.

You’ll spend much of your time in the glass-walled Sightseer Lounge car. Need some quiet time? Go to your reclining coach seat with leg rest or optional sleeping accommodations to read a good book or take a nap.

Before you know it, there’s the “First Call” for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Meals are included on all overnight trains.

While all of the above is taking place, a variety of American landscapes and attractions are just outside your wide train window.

You’ll travel on three major Amtrak trains: The Crescent (Washington - Birmingham); Sunset Limited (New Orleans - Tucson), and Coast Starlight (Los Angeles - Portland).

There are three overnights on the train with hotel nights in between. Spacious reclining coach seats with leg rests are included. The Roomette is an optional accommodation. They are compact; but totally private with a six-foot wide panorama

window. There are two comfortable face-to-face seats in the daytime. At night, the ever-present sleeping car attendant converts them into a lower berth. An upper berth is pulled down from the ceiling. A limited number of more spacious Bedrooms (including a shower and lavatory) are available at an additional cost.

The Crescent Roomette (Washington-Birmingham) includes a washstand and commode. Double-decker Western trains have three restrooms on the lower level and one on the upper level. Shower facilities are on the lower level.

During the course of the tour, 14 nights you’ll be in first-class, spacious hotels; with the three nights on the train.

On your return, I’m confident you’ll acknowledge a more complete familiarization and appreciation of the country’s air and space legacy as well as a feeling for the beauty and vastness of America.
