About Giraffes Singapore
Giraffes Singapore is a volunteer movement by Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC). We encourageindividuals to stick your neck out for the common good; to look beyond ourselves and serve communities in need around us.We honour individuals and organisations that make significant, sustainable, and selfless social contributions. We sharestories of their good work to inspire others to follow their lead.
Giraffes Singapore Community Art Exhibition 2019
The Giraffes Singapore Community Art Project is a creative collaboration to create conversations on the volunteermovement using art as the common language. Individuals from various backgrounds are brought together to express theirbeliefs, ideas, and feelings on causes close to their hearts using three-dimensional giraffe sculptures and figurines ascanvas.
The inaugural public exhibition ran from 1 to 13 August 2019 at Far East Plaza Concourse.

About the Giraffe
Giraffes Singapore calls out to Singaporeans to “STICK YOURNECK OUT FOR THE COMMON GOOD”. In commemorationof Singapore’s Bicentennial, the sculpture bears familiar hand-drawn local motifs. To signify the coming together ofcommunity, exhibition visitors have been invited to co-createthe art piece, pasting a total of 200 stars on the sculpture.We hope that the spirit of serving and giving would becomepart of the Singaporean identity.
About the Artist
Soon Xiao Qi is a final year student at Nanyang Academy ofFine Arts, majoring in Drawing and Printmaking. Drawinginspirations from historical tales and current events, sheexpresses her ideas and thoughts through different forms ofmediums.

Dedicated to every child and the child within all of us who maystruggle with being made different. Named after the Roman goddessof dawn and the electrical phenomenon that illuminates the skies, it isan ode to hope born of chaos and turmoil.
About the Artist
Clare Lee is a contemporary intermedia artist based in Singapore.Self-taught, her work is the lovechild of catharsis and craft and paysunfiltered tribute to the struggles of the underdog or “the other” inour society, diving into themes that explore identity, belonging,redemption and a defiance against prescribed misogyny.

Better known as Paintinks by melt, Melissa Tan, is recognisedfor her whimsical illustrations. She supports non-profitorganisations around the world. A butler to her two cats and aone-eyed dog, she has also worked with animal rescue groupsin Japan and Hong Kong.

About the Giraffe
Struck by the beauty of the majestic, towering giraffes againstthe backdrop of the setting sun on a safari trip to the OkavangoDelta in Botswana, I depicted a family of 3 giraffes in differentshades of gold and natural colour. Gold was also chosenbecause I advocate for solar energy which harnesses the goldenrays of the sun to power our lives.

About the Giraffe
Harmony Embodied is a fusion of the East and West. Thesunflowers, starry night, and almond blossoms arerepresentative elements of the work of Van Gogh, one of themost influential figures in Western art history. As a Straitsborn Chinese, I also took reference from the Peranakandecorative tiles. This giraffe signifies harmony in thecommunity when we stick our necks out in carrying out thesame cause.

In anticipation of the return of Greek hero, Theseus, his shipwas maintained in a seaworthy state. As parts wore out oneby one, they were replaced until eventually nothing remains ofthe original ship. Theseus portrays the passage of time andrapid technological change. Its mechanical exterior is also anod to the age of tech wearables and implants.

Spray-painted gold, Un-Jaded appears polished anddignified, just as how many of us present ourselves outwardly.Up close, it is noticeable that the sculpture is splattered withcontrasting copper paint to remind us to not shy away from“getting our hands dirty”. A student of Pathlight School’s Artist Development Programme(ADP), Tay Jun-Yi loves to draw a myriad of animals invicarious situations. He engineers social interactions among hisanimals – which is something he rarely initiates with. With justa black marker pen, he draws each animal intuitively withoutany hesitation, and each carries a different expression.
