The Valley Gardeners
Water Garden Opens for HaRTIf you love wildlife and
would like to visit the finest water garden in the world
(according to the International Water Lily Society) there’s an important date to put in your diary.
On May 15th the Longstock Park Water Garden is open by kind permission of the John Lewis Partnership for the benefit of HART Wildlife Rescue. The garden, which is near Stockbridge, is only open on 12 occasions during the year and provides the chosen charities with an excellent opportunity to raise funds.
“We are delighted our application was successful, and feel very privileged to have been chosen,” said HART
founder June Gibbs. “The day is likely to be one of our biggest fundraising events of the year and it is particularly fitting that much of the proceeds will help us to transform the field adjacent to the new wildlife hospital in our own wildlife haven.”
With entry only £5 for adults and children under 14 just £1, a visit to the garden makes an excellent day out. Teas are available at Longstock Park Nursery where visitors may be able to purchase some of the plants they have admired and many more besides.
No dogs, except those providing assistance, or picnics are permitted within the water garden.

Issue 34 APRIL www.stockbridgeforum.co.uk
Yes two of them, Stars I and II, bless ‘em. Half term, the first school
holiday of the year. Why we can’t have another week at Christmas is beyond me, but that aside, February half term comes as a welcome break from the winter blues: a time, it would seem, when one is supposed to grab some sun in the Canaries, or decamp to the Alps.
The Pagans? Alas no.
As ever, lovely chums and I juggle child care for when we are working, organize the drop off and pick up for Star II and friend’s golf lesson (I know, terribly middle class darling), and generally swap and swap about whilst permanently angsting over the lack of quality family time - when in fact, Star II was having a ball.
Likewise, Star I - now at that certain age when they tell you of all their social arrangements and you find yourself nodding with what’s left of your permission - giving gene, as you open your purse to make yet another generous contribution to their lunch/bus fare fund, despite the fact that you also give them pocket money.
One day during the holiday, having completed the onerous task of loo cleaning, I came downstairs to find the conservatory looking like a scene from ‘The Hurt Locker’. Star I had, via the use of a large ‘G’ clamp, attached one of my plastic chopping boards to the edge of the dining table and had manfully cut from it two small discs with the Husband’s best wood saw. Design Technology classes are really paying off.
I should explain that Star I and chums have taken to the sport of ‘longboarding’, which basically means they stand on a very expensive version of a scaffold plank and travel at speed down any steep hill they can find. The wearing of appropriate protective pads and helmet is essential because, as Star I’s black eye and grazed chin will testify, stopping is something that has yet to be mastered.
The saw was easily accessible amongst a pile of tools in the corner; did I mention the work in progress that is the kitchen?
Anyway, having ‘gently’ inquired what he was up to , I noticed there was a smell of burning.
“I’m trying to make ‘sliders’ you see Mum, you cut them out and then stick them onto the gloves with hot wax, look see.”
I cast my eyes over to my new kitchen worktop. There, lying in amongst great clods of cooled wax was a glove with plastic disc attached. Next to that was a glass jar blackened by repeated attempts at ignition: the many matches contained within had decided to combust and belched smoke before
HalF TERm HORRORSbeing consumed by hot wax. That was my favourite fig scented candle. Due to the health risks connected with smoke inhalation I resisted the temptation to breathe deeply. My remaining options were either physical violence or the adoption of positive thought, so I congratulated Star I on his improvised technological skills, muttered something about necessity being the mother of invention, and set off for Long Barn to purchase another candle, concluding the drive would do me good.
If you were under the impression that the manufacture of reinforced gloves was the worst incident of the holidays, you may like to ask why we found ourselves with a half naked Star II standing in the back of the trusty Renault in the middle of the New Forest.
Well, the Husband’s cousin lives in the Forest, and so it was that one Saturday in half term we, along with the immaculate in-laws, went to visit. Driving down, we commented on how the recent rain had rendered the Forest a virtual bog, with horses standing knee (or the equestrian equivalent) deep in pools of water.
The charming cousin and spouse have two dogs, so after a delicious lunch we all set off for a walk. Down muddy footpaths we went, through woods, along flinted tracks newly transformed into streams by the rainfall, and across fields complete with wild ponies various.
Initially Star II led the way with the dogs on their leads, but once they were running free and the novelty of stick throwing had worn off, then something else to do was required. And what could be better than mud, and puddles the size of small ponds: Star II was in heaven. I have to say that at first I didn’t notice; there were the odd noises off, a splash here, a squelch and giggle there - normal stuff.
Looking back, I suppose we were about half way through the walk, with the temperature dropping, when I fully realised the extent of Star II’s pond hopping prowess. In short, he had none. No, rather he had taken to leaping into the middle of every piece of flood water he came into contact with. ‘What, ankle deep?’ I hear you ask. No, no, this was no amateur attempt. Star II had turned bog hopping into an Olympic sport; he was wet …. very - and muddy to the waist.
Suddenly my mothering skills, or lack of them, were on trial. I came over all liberal and used phrases like, “That’s enough now sweetie, no more,” and the infamous, “Darling don’t do that please, no one is laughing.”
The glint in the eye of Star II whilst leaping into another lake confirmed that I was guilty as charged: ‘crap parent’.
The Husband was of no support; “Sandra sort him out love, just tell him ‘No’.”

You do not have to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer! Stockbridge &
District Young Farmers’ Club is part of the National Federation of Young Farmers’Club whose aim is to provide ‘fun, learning and achievement’ for all its members. The club currently has 25 members, who are of varying ages from villages in the local area.
The group meets fortnightly in Leckford and often takes part in competition days at the weekend. Since the beginning of the Young Farmers year, in September, Stockbridge & District Young Farmers’ Club has entered Autumn Competitions at Sparhsolt College, held a successful Halloween Party for members of Young Farmers Clubs across the county, been bowling, held a pool competition, had a talk from Guide Dogs for the Blind and the seniors have entered the Wallop & Tytherley Growmore Quiz Night and Ploughing Match.
The Club has also undertaken two fundraising events. The first was a 12-hour darts marathon. Club Leader Phil Larkin took on the challenge of throwing darts for 12 gruelling hours. He was helped by club members Will Larkin and Jenny Reynell who kept him company and recorded all his
family, and of course, an extra room! Families even receive a monthly fee to compensate for the cost of an extra family member, so hosting an exchange student doesn’t need to mean that you are eaten out of house and home!
In school students study alongside local students, typically at AS level, and are encouraged to play an active part in the school community, meaning that their fellow students also reap the benefits of the exchange programme.
Throughout the students’ time in the UK a local InterStudies coordinator is responsible for looking after the students, helping them find spare time activities and dealing with any minor pastoral issues, and acting as a neutral support person for both the students and their host families.
If you want to get involved, or read more about the InterStudies programme, then you can see more information on: www.interstudies.com, or call the local coordinator, Nicola French, on 01794 341718.
InterStudies started in 2004, and has over the last 7 years built up a solid
reputation for providing high quality exchange programmes for foreign students in the UK. Students come from all over the world to experience everyday British life, living with a ‘host family’ and attending local schools alongside British students.
The idea of student exchanges originated in the US after the Second World War, where student exchange programmes were encouraged in order to increase understanding and tolerance between cultures, as well as improving the participants language skills and broadening their horizons.
Participants describe student exchanges as a win-win situation: students have the opportunity to experience the British culture at first hand, and learn fluent English, while giving their host family the opportunity to learn about a foreign culture. Families with children, for example, can give their children the opportunity to have a host brother or sister from another country, helping their own children to learn about a foreign culture.
Anyone can apply to join the programme. The most important criteria for a host family is that they have a warm and welcoming home, and a genuine desire to welcome a foreign student into their

scores. A group of members were there to cheer him on to the final countdown.
Most recently the Club has made deliveries for their annual ‘Dung Drop’. This involved bagging up over 65 bags of farmyard manure, kindly provided by local farmer and former chairman Kurt Morton and delivering them to villages across the Test Valley area. This year after bagging up the dung, club members had a BBQ lunch to refuel before splitting into three teams to make the deliveries. Last year this event raised £150 for the Hampshire Air Ambulance and this year the £250 raised will be split between registered charity Hampshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs and Stockbridge & District Young Farmers’ Club.
Stockbridge & District Young Farmers’ Club has been running for almost three years and has grown in members and variety of activities undertaken. The Club has a strong team of Club Leaders, Club Officers and keen members who ensure that the Club has an exciting programme and that the members participate in as many local events as possible. Stockbridge & District Young Farmers’ Club are always looking for more opportunities to get involved with the local community, for people who would like to come and give a talk at a club night and for anyone who is interested in joining. Drive to West Dean via EAST Tytherley and Lockerley (West Tytherley road closed). Start out by crossing the railway line and walking up hill towards Salisbury. After about 500m you should
see a footpath to the left. It skirts a recently rebuilt house and continues gently uphill towards Dean Hill. Where it meets the road cross it and continue under the lee of Dean Hill until you reach West Dean Farm. There's a couple of newly built houses and across the farm yard you should see a track to your right which will take you to the road which you cross to continue on the footpath. (If you go straight on you'll need to turn right at the road to regain the footpath.)
At the corner of the field you should take the path almost directly to the isolated copse of trees in the middle of the field and go straight on till you meet a field boundary where, if you bear right (going by now almost due north) you should see the footpath and the tunnel beneath the Salisbury to Romsey railway line.
When you meet the road turn left for some 200m and then down the track toward the water treatment path for a further 150m where you step out onto the footpath again across the field skirting the treatment plant. Follow the path round then bear off left and continue. You'll have to pass through a tall wooden gate and go through the garden of a house to come out onto a roughly made up road. Turn left for 150m, and then take the footpath to your right. Keep on, crossing

aPRIl WalKthe road and then through Brown's Copse keeping straight on through Farley Copse to emerge almost opposite the Hook and Glove in Farley. This is a lovely
country pub to stop for lunch but if there’s a large group of you, please phone in advance on 01722 712247 to let them know you’re coming.
The return route is a little shorter... Retrace your steps into Farley Copse but take the left turn at the cross ways going roughly due east till you meet Ben Lane. Bear right for about 500m and at the cross road continue straight on with the rough roadway. After about 600m, take the somewhat hidden footpath to your right. It starts off in a part of Bentley Wood and it will
emerge in an open space which has been divided off into horse paddocks. The path to take - roughly south east - is fairly clear and you'll re-enter Bentley Wood after about 1km. Follow the path - it's easy to become lost in Bentley Wood - and take the left fork as it leaves the wood. After about 1km you'll be a few hundred metres above the car park where you started.
Please send us your walks, we are always delighted to be able to publish them in the Forum.

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

The Romsey SIngers regular Easter date in Romsey Abbey is
a performance of Brahms’ German Requiem on Saturday April 18th. This
year they have also been invited to perform in Beaulieu Abbey as part of the Music
at Beaulieu season. That concert is on April 2nd. Ian Wicks, the choir’s Director, who is also Director of Music at the Cathedral School in Salisbury, says he is delighted to have the opportunity to take the choir further afield, especially as the choir is now drawing its members from a wide area, including the New Forest and Lymington.
So Good They'll Sing it Twice!ROMSEY’S ACCOMPLISHED CHAMBER CHOIR, THE ROMSEY SINGERS, ARE GIVING THEIR EASTER CONCERT TWICE THIS YEAR
An unusual feature of these performances will be the accompaniment by two pianists, adding twice the power to the keyboard. The pianists for both performances will be Timothy Hone and Andrej Kouznetsov.
Romsey Singers’ Christmas and Easter concerts have become a popular feature of the Music in Romsey season. The choir has grown in musical strength under Ian Wicks’ directorship, and now

While Fairclough has exhibited for many years with the gallery,
this is the first time that there has been a focus on the work of Melegari who was born in Wales of Italian parents. "I first came across Carl's paintings
last autumn and I knew instantly that we had to show this work of the very highest quality", enthused Ian Courcoux, gallery director. "His texture and style stand out, whether it is his figure or animal work -- really exciting". Melegari's recent show in Cardiff sold 36 paintings on the opening night and Ian is hoping for similar success in Stockbridge. "These are works which are special and we have already had success with them in our mixed winter show", says Ian.
Carl melegari & michael Faircloughat Courcoux & CourcouxTHE FIRST FOCAL SHOW OF 2011 AT COURCOUX & COURCOUX CONTEMPORARY ART IN STOCKBRIDGE FEATURES THE PAINTINGS OF TWO OUTSTANDING PAINTERS, CARL MELEGARI AND MICHAEL FAIRCLOUGH.
As he approaches 70, Michael Faiclough's strong seascapes just seem to get better and better. A Rome Scholar in the '60s and winner of the Hunting Prize in 1987, this is the work of a very serious painter. In these new paintings he has expanded his palette to incorporate vivid blues and reds and his huge skies, often above seas off the west coast of Ireland, are accentuated by
the wonderful textures which he achieves by mixing potter's grog with his oil paint.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 2nd April and runs until the 27th. Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm. Tel. 01264 810717/www.courcoux.co.uk.

Launch of Bra Bank, Tuesday 15th March 11.00 a.m. by Janet
Whiteley, Chairman of Stockbridge Parish Council and Sally Milligan, member of Parish Council. Come to Stockbridge and bin your old bra!
They have just taken delivery of a ‘Bra Bank’ where anybody can deposit their unwanted bras. The donation to ‘Against Breast Cancer’ depends on the weight of the bank, so the more bras the better. The donated bras are then whisked away to start life on the other side of the world where local traders support their families by selling them. Any bras beyond redemption are taken apart and disposed of properly.
Nicolette Read, owner of Undercover: “It is not uncommon for customers who have taken advantage of our specialised fitting service to leave the shop wearing
their new bra, asking us to throw away the old one.
The Bra Bank seemed the ideal solution as it not only raises funds for cancer research but helps families in the developing world and recycles hopeless bras responsibly. Hopefully we will raise a significant amount of money for a really good cause.” Donate your bras and claim 5% off a replacement bought at Undercover.
Bank your old bra – don’t bin it! For further information please contact Nicolette Read or Susan Kent on 01264 810888 or [email protected]. www.againstbreastcancer.org.uk - www.undercoverintimates.co.uk

METHoD
In a dish that will fit into your fridge place the meat and marinade and leave for 24hrs. Add a classic bouquet garni: thyme, bay leaves, stems of parsley attached together with a piece of string with one or two cloves in the middle. Add a little balsamic vinegar to enhance the flavour. After 24hrs strain the meat and separate it from the ingredients, keep both for use later.
Warm up a cocotte (The beautiful and heavy Le Creuset) or a large pot, and fry the meat little by little. Never attempt to fry the meat all at once or it will boil. Using goose fat or oil, fry the meat until nice and brown and then add the bacon. When the ingredients are browned pour the brandy over and wait a minute, then light with a match (to remove the unpleasant overtones of alcohol), cover to stop the ingredients burning.
Next add a tablespoon of flour, one by one. Stir in well and then pour the wine over and cover. Place the pot inside the oven (only if the handles are NoT plastic) and cook for 3hrs at 150°C. After three hours check to see if meat is tender, remove or leave for another 30 minutes etc…
If you are using diced venison instead of beef, add juniper berries into the marinade and a small jar of cranberries whilst cooking in oven. Cooking time should be 4hrs. 1hr for poultry unless you find a boiler, then it will take longer to cook (A boiler is usually an old hen). After 2½hrs of cooking fry the pickling onions, mushrooms and add sugar in a frying pan. once cooked place them into the cooking meat and add salt and pepper to taste. The secret of this meal is slow cooking. If warmed up a day or two later it will add more flavor and is excellent for home freezing. for beef or poultry try a delicious potato puree. for venison why not try braised red cabbage with cumin seeds or celeriac puree.

If we so choose we can feed ourselves whilst simultaneously taking part in any activity, no need to sit at a table. Walking, driving, shopping, going to the cinema, you name it we can eat as we go and once finished we simply throw it away. There in lies the problem.
Of course there are plenty of bins dotted around Stockbridge which the vast majority use but, as usual, it’s the minority that either feel they are exempt from such basic considerations or simply can’t give a toss, no pun intended.
It’s easy to blame the young, our play grounds are strewn with rubbish and even where bins are provided they are often tipped over, can anyone seriously be impressed by that? But clearly there are other
culprits, a friend was walking her dog when it emerged from a park hedge covered excrement of the human variety complete with baby wipe, and for the wildlife in and around Stockbridge there is a positive buffet of discarded take-away food which has either been thrown from car windows or discarded in the street without a thought. It’s vile.
Stockbridge is blessed with a team of dedicated litter pickers. Armed with bags and grabbers they stoically pick up all those dregs so causally discarded by moronic people, regardless of age, who have so little respect or concern for the place in which they live, or visit, that they consider littering ‘’ok’ or even amusing.
Actually they probably lack the cognitive ability to make such a judgement, in short they don’t think because they don’t
care. So what is to be done? Sadly probably nothing. Those of us that use bins and teach our children to do likewise will continue to do so and those that can’t be bothered will keep the lovely litter pickers busy.
What do you think?
Well that’s what we are led to believe. White goods have a ‘life’
and so aren’t worth repairing, cars have to be traded in every three years or else they will completely implode, the very second food goes past its sell-by date it must be jettisoned for fear of contracting some hideous form of poisoning, should we be brave enough to break the seal.
Of course we know none of that is really true, but the fact remains that we live in a consumer society gone mad. The epitome of this is probably that of consumables, food and drink. No matter where we find ourselves, whatever the time of day or night there will always be victuals of every conceivable type, hot or cold, abundantly available.

A new crown in 90 minutes?Although our patients tell us they like visiting the practice we appreciate they are busy people. They would wish to spend as little time as possible in the dental chair.
With this in mind we have installed the latest
CEREC technology. This is a revolutionary
innovation that enables us to design, fabricate
a crown, inlay or veneer in a single visit. When
you arrive, a digital camera is used to take
an image of a prepared tooth, instead of an
impression or mould. you then relax with a
coffee and a magazine whilst we design the restoration. The whole
procedure that would normally take at least two weeks, if not more,
just takes around an hour and a half.
