Jeff Amundson and his daughter Kelly in Jeff’s 1911 Maxwell at the tour finish line in New Brighton.

It isn’t a high-speed car chase. The vehicles travel only about 20 miles per hour all day long.

But that doesn’t mean the New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run isn’t a thrill.

“It’s an endurance event, not a race,” said Judy Goepel, a board mem-ber of Antique Car Run, Inc. “The ultimate goal is to challenge these really old cars to make the 120-mile trek and cross the finish line.”

Most of them do, but not all. Goepel said the tour has about an 89 percent “finish rate.” It’s a challenge, she said, because in the days these cars were made, “there was hardly 120 miles of road for them to drive on.”

Jeff Amundson, the president of Antique Car Run, Inc., was once one of the unlucky non-finishers. His prized old vehicle began making an

“awful clunking” noise during the middle of the tour. One of the rings broke on the car’s pistons, and he had to shut it down for the day.

“You feel kind of defeated,” he said. “But it’s better to drop out and still have the car to fix up than to blow something that can’t be fixed.”

The annual Stockyard Days event, which started at the city’s centennial celebration in 1987, will begin this year on Aug. 11. It begins in the small, rural city New London and ends at the festival in New Brighton. It’s an attempt to reinforce New Brighton’s namesake ties to the English city of Brighton, Goepel said. It replicates a 100-year old event in England, in which cars travel between the original cities London and Brighton.

The American version takes drivers along a beautiful tour of the Minnesota countryside.

“It’s beautiful,” Amundson said. “You go over rolling hills, and see all kinds of lakes early in the morning. You see the beauty we’re surrounded by in Minnesota.”

An average of 60 cars participate each year. They’re motivated by the tour’s scenery, and by the desire to fix up an old car and take it for a spin. But they also have loftier goals: to preserve an aspect of history that might other-wise be forgotten.

The event is for true antiques. It only allows vehicles from 1908 or before, except one or two cylinder vehicles, which can be from as late as 1915.

Sometimes, customers come to The Truman Company to find out the value of a coin or a coin collection so they can sell it. Others want an appraisal so they know a little more about their possessions, says Westerling, owner of The Truman Company in Roseville.

And, in a scene that echoes Westerling’s own past, sometimes a neophyte walks in with a coin and a certain gleam in the eye – and leaves with a wealth of knowledge and a newly-minted passion for coins.

After 36 years in business, there are plenty of repeat customers at The Truman Company. Westerling’s recipe for continued success is simple: unmatched knowledge of his field and a commitment to building and keeping trust. “We focus on good service and honesty.”

Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. He’s been trusted with collections that are too big for their owners to bring into the office. This is where his sterling customer service really shines.

“I’m more than happy to come out to their home or bank,” he says. Either in-store or off-site, he spends whatever time it takes to make sure he’s provided a meticu-lous appraisal.

And if someone is interested in selling a collection, they can be assured Westerling won’t “cherry-pick” a few valuable coins and leave them with the rest. He says it’s only fair to do business on their terms, and with his experience and contacts, he can handle a wide range of inventory. “There’s a market for everything,” he says.

For one thing, the business Westerling began as a storefront for local customers now counsels people from thousands of miles away. Thanks to the digital age, The Truman Company now counts an estimated 2,500 active clients around the country.

Westerling learned the trade from his uncle Truman, a California coin dealer who crisscrossed the country in a quest to find the most coveted coins.

“Every time he visited my family, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would foster a real interest in rare and unusual coins,” Westerling says. And it worked!

While old coins appreciate gradually,

precious metals have seen a dramatic spikes in value. From 2002 to 2012, the value of silver went up 456 percent and gold 478 percent.

“I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will continue to rise during our life-time,” Westerling says.

The Truman Company has also under-gone some major changes in the past year – moving to a new suite that doubled the space to accommodate additional staff and an increased client base. But the business is still easy to find, at the same office building.

Another addition to the suite: space for a dog bed and water bowl for “Sonny,” a Lab-retriever mix – golden retriever, of course.

As with so many of Westerling’s deci-sions, Sonny was a sound investment. “He’s great with customers and adds a special welcome to the place.”

Curious about a collection? Concerned about a pending purchase? There’s help right around the corner. “My staff and I are dedicated to helping peo-

ple preserve and grow their wealth, just like my Uncle Truman did,” Westerling says. “That is why I started The Truman Company.”

You can hear the Truman Company and Roger Westerling featured in the

Brett Winterble Show, Monday through Friday from 9-10pm Eastern on XM Talk 168. In addition Roger joins Brett twice a month to break down the latest in the global precious metals and numismatics markets!

The Truman Company: a trusted name in coins

When it comes to navi-gating the world of rare coins and pre-

cious metals, people have found a trusted guide in Roger Westerling for well over three decades.

Owner Roger Westerling and mascot “Sonny” welcome coin enthusiasts to The Truman Company. Right, Westerling has offered trustworthy appraisals of coins for 36 years.

Think the coin business is chancy, confusing and, well, rigged against you? These clients of The Truman Company found that with the right advisor, it isn’t.

“Once my wife and I determined that we wanted to have precious metals in our portfolio, we contacted one of the highly advertised national providers of these products. The discussion was clear, but the process felt cumbersome. . . Just prior to making the phone call to finalize the purchase, we contacted The Truman Company for a second opinion. We were very glad we did. Roger made sure we under-stood the entire buy-sell process, all the fees involved and what to

expect after the sale. We made the purchase through Truman and the products were delivered directly to our front door within days.

We felt that we were important to them and that they would take care of any issues that might arise. We will definitely use them in the future and truly recommend them to anyone.” – K. B., Michigan

“I had many negative experiences in the coin industry. The Truman Company is the first and only coin dealer I have ever dealt with that has been forthright and honest. And I hasten to say the only coin dealer from whom I have had a profit. . . If you had an honest dealer as I believe The Truman Company to be, stay with them just as you would keep an honest and capable mechanic.” – C.A., Virginia

Hang on!Displaying classic rodeo form, this youngster takes a turn on the mechanical bull ride.

This summer, the city of New Brighton turns 125 years old — and its annual Stockyard Days celebration will emphasize the important milestone.

The New Brighton Area Historical Society, which has been preserving New Brighton history since 1980, will be com-memorating the anniversary by selling buttons at Stockyard Days, which will take place between Aug. 5 and 13 this year.

New Brighton began as a settlement for the Dakota and Ojibwe, who passed through the area on wild rice harvesting voyages. However, due to poor commu-nication and constant fighting between the two tribes, the tribes could not hold onto the land when French and English settlers arrived in the mid-1800s.

In 1858, a permanent settlement was

established in the area. This settlement included a church, school, and general store; it was governed by elected officers.

The Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing Company formed in what is now New Brighton in 1888. The company’s profits soared as it met increasing hous-ing demands of American settlers coming into what is now the metro area. The Twin Cities Packing Company was estab-lished a year later.

The “Butcher’s Spur” area in New Brighton was a large industrial center, complete with meat-packing facilities and hide houses. In the next year a church and hotel were erected as well. As more and more businesses were drawn to the area, its residents decided that the

settlement needed a name. New Brighton became an official village on Jan. 20, 1891.

Stockyard Days was first held in 1981 thanks to the help of the New Brighton Jaycees and the New Brighton Area Historical Society. One of the celebration’s main attractions in early years was the steam locomotive housed at the Historical Society’s location in Long Lake Regional Park. Visitors to Stockyard Days — which is named after the packing company formed in 1888 — could ride the locomotive up and down its line.

However, due to increasing insurance costs, in recent decades the locomotive has remained inactive. Instead, Stockyard Days now serves as a way for local busi-nesses and residents to come together in celebration of the town’s history.

ested in antique cars. His father partic-ipated in the Car Run for many years, beginning in its first go in 1987. After he passed away, Amundson began to take up the hobby himself.

“The nice thing about it is preserv-ing history,” he said. “Driving in that car, you feel like you’re back in 1911 for a day. It’s fantastic.”

Goeppel was involved in organiz-ing the Car Run in 1987. She’s still involved all this time later, she said, for reasons similar to Amundson’s.

“These guys really love these old cars,” she said. “They believe these cars should be on the road, rather than in a museum. Anybody who appreciates history wants to pass it on to the next generation. And unless they pass it on, these cars will be lost, and won’t be a part of history anymore.”

Jackie Finney found a good use for that old holiday decoration, the mechanical reindeer whose head rises up and down like it’s eating grass.

She surrounded it with paper mache, dressed it up, and turned it into last year’s Stockyard Days Create-a-Cow winner.

“It was kind of fun, creating something,” she said. “We had to redo the head a little bit and make it bulkier. But me and my hus-band put it together, and it was fun to do.”

Finney entered the contest as a way to get her granddaughters inspired to do the same thing. She said it provides a fun art-and-craft activity for people of all ages, and she had noticed that fewer people were par-ticipating in recent years.

“We were trying to motivate people to keep it alive,” she said. “I think last year brought it back a little bit, and that’s good!”

The Stockyard Days festival began in 1981, the festival’s website says, as a way to “recall the early days of New Brighton as a center for the cattle industry including the

festival holds its competition of creativity, which inspires people to come up with the most original depiction of a cow possible.

The contest is free to enter. There are three categories for children, teens, and adults. Contestants are encouraged to use their creativity and any materials they want, according to the entry form, such as “paint, wallpaper, clothing, etc.”

Entries will be displayed at Long Lake Park on Aug. 12 and judged on their cre-ativity and applicability to the festival. The adult winner will receive $100, while the teens will win $50 and the children win $25.

But that isn’t all participants get out of it, Finney said. She had so much fun last year, she plans on entering again this year.

“It’s a fun project, and it helps you get out and do something rather than just look-ing at the computer or T.V.,” she said.
