Quarterly Newsletter for the staff of SUEZ-Tractebel Operation and Maintenance Oman LLC
1st Quarter 2014
This will be my last
time corresponding
in the quarterly
Gazette; I have mixed
emotions about
leaving Oman and
STOMO. The last five
years have been a
great journey for me and watching the company
grow organically has been very fulfilling.
Over the last five years we witnessed growth
from the commercial operations at Barka II
through the construction and commercial
operations of Barka III and Sohar II, these plants
were completed on schedule which is truly
remarkable. Fleet Maintenance has completed
multiple major outages in Oman and in Bahrain
successfully and has created additional value
for STOMO working at other group assets within
the region and abroad.
Whilst we have had our challenges with Health
and Safety I am proud to say that I believe STOMO
now has one of the best programs in the region
with management commitment, employee
involvement and continual improvement. I truly
thank all of the staff for this.
In closing I would like to say thank you to all of
the team for making the last five years of my
life one the most fulfilling of my career. I wish
all the best to you individually in your person
and professional lives and continued good
health for you and your families.
As this is the first
Quarterly Gazette
for 2014 and my
official start date is
not until 1st May,
this period for me
has been about
the handover of
the General Manager role and getting
to understand some of the principles of
STOMO and life in Oman. I can truly say that
I have been made very welcome by everyone
that I have met and already feel part of the
STOMO team and family and look forward
to the future with my family in Oman. My
main note for my first Gazette is however
to reflect on the excellent job William
King has done in leading and evolving the
STOMO business into the professional and
successful environment it is today – I am
very impressed and you should all be very
proud. I am also 100% clear that this will be
a very hard act to follow but I assure you all
that I too will give STOMO the same focus
and commitment that Williams has given
it over the past 5 years. I personally would
also like to thank William for his friendship
and assistance in the professional handover
and transition and looking forward I wish
both William and his wife Betty all the very
best and equally as much success in their
next exciting opportunity Abu Dhabi.
Welcome note from the GM
Mike MaudsleyWilliam King
We started 2014 on a very strong and positive
note from 2013 where we went right back to
basics with our HSE training and awareness.
We are now continuing to develop our systems
as we are growing and maturing together. I
must ask you all for your patience here within
the INTELEX system as we are all still learning
and developing this to meet our requirements;
this will ensure in the long term that it is
practicable, workable and achievable.
Several incidents did occur during this first
quarter including one injury, (See incident
triangle below), this was a First Aid incident
and this incident was practically a repeat of
a medical treatment incident one year ago.
This was quite clear that if we cut corners
within our investigations and do not treat
these seriously they will grow back on us. We
must get to the root cause analysis (RCA) of
all incidents and ensure suitable controls are
put in place in order to eliminate these from
re-occurring.
All key personnel have now been trained
and attended the RCA and Event Tree Analysis
Training. We have also made several changes to
the Incident Module within INTELEX to improve
the investigation and further introduced the
STOMO flash. This is to clearly share best
practice and learning from experience to
eliminate this type of occurrence in future.

I do believe we’re all connected. I do believe in positive energy. I do believe in the power of prayer. I do believe in putting good out into the world. And I believe in taking care of each other - Harvey Fierstein
If we look at our systems closely which are
now already in place and see how these can
lead the way forward for us. For instance, if
we take our lagging incident triangle above
and invert this as below, then further stack
a few more building blocks on the top of
this (hence the wider we make this triangle,
the better it is for our success). We can
successfully achieve our goal. See below for
further clarification.
Some companies still use and concentrate
on lagging indicators like the old Heinrich’s
(1931) and Frank Birds (1969) triangles and
theories, which were great at their time
in the 20th century for measuring your
company against these figures. Since then
there has been so many major changes in
legislation and other changes in industry
that we cannot overlook.
The existing proactive program, which
we have now taken to another level and
substantiated through our HSEMS and
structured tasking within INTELEX to further
improve our performance is now in place
and working well. We must continue to stay
on this road to success with our proactive
programs at the forefront of everything that
we do and stay within these guidelines set
within our systems.
During the quarter we have observed a
notable drop in incidents from 2013, especially
near misses, I am confident that the proactive
measures now employed have had and will
further have a significant attribute to this
decrease in incidents.. Nonetheless we must
still continue to report all incidents.

On the 7th January, GDF SUEZ announces first gas production from the Juliet field, a subsea development on the western flank of the Southern Gas Basin, 39 km East of the Lincolnshire coastline in the United Kingdom. Initial gas has been produced from the West Well, the first of two wells to be drilled. The second well (Juliet East) is expected to come on-stream in the first quarter of 2014. At plateau, the wells will produce approximately 80 million cubic feet of gas per day (800 million cubic meters per year or 5 million of barrels of oil equivalent (Mboe) per year).

the new changes at the sites. I have personally
witnessed your growth over the last 18 months
in which has been a fantastic achievement to

Training
Sunil Kumar Training Manager
In last quarter different HSE training programs
were conducted, where special training
programs were organised for Emergency
Response Team members and HSE Engineers.
Ten batch of trainees joined STOMO on
the 1st April, with eight Local Operator
trainees in this batch. With the induction
on this batch our overall fresh graduate
recruitment program number has reached
94 which is approximately 25% of STOMOs
overall manpower. Other internal training
programs like CRO training and SCE training
are also in progress.
Our Online English language Training
program is giving good results. Sultan Al Bahri
from Rusail power plant is one of the top users
of this program. His learning experience will
be shared in a separate interview and I hope
this will motivate more STOMO employees to
enroll into the Language training program.
As the busy winter maintenance period has
come to an end, I am sure that, employees will be
able to devote more time on different training
programs offered by STOMO, especially the
online HSE training Program ‘INSTINCT’
Happy leaning!

The approach adopted today (23rd January) by the European Commission concerning the EU 2030 energy and climate framework is of utmost importance in shaping the energy transition to a low carbon future. The Magritte Group of CEOs is committed to support an ambitious and realistic low carbon strategy, without compromising Europe’s industrial competitiveness. To achieve this ambition, they believe a single binding target on CO2 is crucial to ensure that European energy policy will lead to a reliable, sustainable and affordable energy supply.

Plant Operation:The first quarter completed with
hectic activity associated with
end of outage session. March
month sprung many surprise
outages. Plant operated at an
average load factor of 54%
during the period, with the
average forced outage rate
of 0.94%. Significant events,
which contributed to forced
outage rate during the period
Q1 2014, are;
 Extension of planned outage
for GT1 over approved outage
period as scope changed
from HGPI to MI based on
observations on bearings and
compressor vanes.
 GT6 gear box gear teeth
failure resulted in forced
outage of 241 hours.
GT7 had to go for unplanned
maintenance for replacing
stage 2 turbine buckets
based on
 Baroscopic Inspection result.
Gear box failure brought out
harsh reality on how to assess
condition in absence of OEM
supplied parts availability. OEM
which supplied the component
about 30 years back does no
longer exist. Plant ageing and
obsolete parts issue would
continue to haunt Rusail in future
years. The first quarter saw,
completion of GT6 LTE HGPI/
MI of GT1. My sincere gratitude
goes to efforts to all O&M
staff of Rusayl in completion
of scheduled inspections and
Annual Performance Test on
Gas and Liquid (Partial), without
any significant HSE incidents to
report.
Environment, Health and Safety There was no Lost Time
Accidents during the period
and Rusayl Power plant
achieved 1,865 days without
LTA as of the 31st March 2014.
Unseasonal rains prompted

2014 started off on a positive
note with us receiving our
formal approvals in both ISO
14001 and OHSAS 18001.
Although a significant amount
of work was undertaken during
2013 to implement the system
framework, where you will now
observe that the program is
shifting from a project phase to
an operational phase. In order
to control the operational
phase activities and maintain
our compliance, the required
actions have been assigned to
members of the team via our
Intelex portal to ensure timely
completion and adequate
audit trail for future reference.
Like any new system we will
face some minor ‘snags’ during
the implementation phase,
should you have any concerns/
questions I would urge you
discuss with your line manager
so we can work on a solution.
Our HSE performance
remained on a positive note
during the first quarter of the
year.
You will note that the site
is continuing to focus on
proactive safety measures,
whereby observations added
to the Intelex system are
reviewed and, apart from
immediate actions being taken
on the event, they feed into a
larger picture which is used
to direct our monthly HSE
themes at the site in order to
increase awareness amongst
the employees and contractors
alike. The data that you enter
is imperative in driving this
program so I would urge each
of you to ensure when entering
any observations adequate
details are established… Again
your contributions within
Intelex help drive change!
Should you have any questions
do not hesitate to discuss with
the HSE team.
RAY ECOLOGIC has been
focusing on the remediation
measures for the fuel oil spill
area with positive results to
date. The have undertaken a
15 week plan with strategies
for insitu remediation
approved by the Ministry of
Environment which utilizes
free rad technology. Once
the program is completed a
number of monitoring wells
will be established in order to
demonstrate compliance with
the ministry’s requirements.
Should you have any questions
with regards to the process
being undertaken I would
request you discuss with
Haseen who can explain in
more details.
Q1 of 2014 again proved
to be a very busy time with
regards to maintenance
activities at the site. The Minor
Overhauls of both STG’s was
completed with the help of
the Fleet Maintenance team.
There were a few unexpected
findings; however the teams
managed to pull together and
complete the tasks largely on
time and budget, overall great
work by all involved.
The teams also completed
the membrane replacement
during the quarter and were
able to make significant
improvements in relation to
the rack leakages over the
outage period - great work!
The hot drains and
associated electrical works
were completed during the
quarter which proved to be a
significantly time consuming
and labor intensive process.
The systems have since been
put back into normal operation
without any major issues -
again great work to all involved!
The performance tests were
successfully completed during
the quarter with the plant again
demonstrating capacity above
that which is contractually
required. There were a few
lessons to take away from the
process this year which we will
carry forward towards next
year’s program.
The plants reliability and
availability has been largely
ahead of those budgeted year
to date which demonstrates a
positive start to the year.
Overall great start to 2014,
let’s keep up the positive
results!

GDF SUEZ is pleased to announce on the 10th February, that the Amstel field oil production has started from its newly installed Q13a-A production platform off the Dutch coast.
After the acquisition of 50% into the Q13a offshore production licence in 2010, GDF SUEZ Dutch Exploration and Production affiliate – GDF SUEZ E&P Nederland B.V., the first offshore gas producer in the Netherlands – demonstrated its capacity and expertise in bringing the Amstel field into production in less than 3 years. The company proved the existence of an economically viable amount of oil by successfully drilling an appraisal well at the beginning of 2011.
Barka IIIBy end of the first quarter, Barka III Power Plant completed 1,003 days without a Lost Time Accident even after having EPCC and their sub-contractors presence at a high scale.
On the 25th March, Barka III Power Plant was officially inaugurated by HE Minister of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources. The function was also attended by president and chief executive officer of GDF Suez Energy International, government officials from Oman, senior management representatives of the shareholding companies, the Public Authority for Social
Insurance (PASI) of Oman, Sojitz Corporation and Shikoku Electric Power of Japan and other invitees.
The GT11 and GT12 annual outages were taken up to carry out gas turbine minor inspections and were completed successfully. These outages have given the opportunity for EPCC to fix many pending issues and warranties prior to the summer period. A plant complete outage was requested and approved by OETC in order to allow EPCC to perform important works such as T3000 (DCS) update, harmonic
filters installation and water-steam cycle passing valves. The outage lasted for three days. T3000 DCS system was upgraded to new version to resolve the spurious time synchronization alarm issues.
On the 19th March, the Plant Annual Performance test was performed. The preliminary results indicate that the Guaranteed Capacity for Contractual Year 2 (CY2) has been achieved with margins on both fuel modes. On that opportunity, an online fuel changeover was demonstrated in the presence of the off taker (OPWP).

During the first quarter of 2014, team work continued with positive approach and enthusiasm with safety as top most priority in the Safety Management System on a daily basis and at Intelex. Sohar I team members participated at instinct training and tool box talks. There was no LTA and near misses were reported during this first quarter. At the end of first quarter the LTA days were 426. The plant team has carried out nine safety walks and twenty-seven fresh eye inspections. The plant has continued implementing the recommendations of the audits which were identified.
SPC board meeting was conducted at plant site for the first time on the 19th February and brief plant walk down carried out after the board meeting. The board members expressed their satisfaction in terms plant cleanliness and upkeep.
There were two important plant outages planned and executed in the month of March 2014, including some important inspection at steam turbine LP blades and adaptive stage valve internals and the result were good. The plant performance test were carried out at gas and oil, witnessed by OPWP authorities and achieved above the target value as mentioned below;
On Gas – Power 598.1 Mw against target 585 Mw and Water - 6547.6 M3 against target 6250 m3.
On Oil - Power 404.4 Mw against target 358 Mw and Water - 6449.3 M3 against target 6250 m3.
This first quarter of 2014, the plant power production, availability & reliability achieved were better than budgeted values. The availability was 81.47 % against the budgeted 78.05 % for power and production clocked 765,304 mw, much comparing to budgeted 655,689 mw.
The availability and reliability of water plant slightly lower than budgeted values during this quarter. The availability was 83.56% against the budgeted 86.05 % less than the budget respectively. This is mainly due to planned shutdown for maintenance activities at common steam and water system. The water production also was on higher end as 117, 226, 99 cubic meters with reference to the budgeted 109, 448, 15 m3.
The Site Management appreciates the hard work, dedication and commitment from the team with respect and making confidence to overcome the challenges in the rest of the year. The two times plant shutdown planned and executed in a safe manner and timely completion of task and starting the plant to produce the water supply to the Al Batna region reciprocates the professional approach which was highly

The Automatic Generation Control tuning was stared by LDC on their side. Barka III was cautiously dispatched from LDC during tuning period. The tuning activity continues.
Referring to the monthly Barka III dispatch profile, the plant will hopefully be operated on higher dispatch during summer period and the O&M teams are all geared up to be in line as per grid demand. During last summer period the plant was operated in CC mode whereas during the winter period, the generators were operated in OC mode.

Cameron LNG, one of the most advanced US LNG export projects, promoted by GDF SUEZ as a shareholder and a capacity holder, has just reached a decisive step with the conditional non-Free Trade Agreement (FTA) approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE). Non-FTA agreement will enable GDF SUEZ to export LNG from the Cameron LNG project, in Louisiana, into countries that have not signed a FTA with the USA.

Our Plants - Business Summary - contd.
Sohar II Power Plant won
SAMEA’s 2013 - Summer
Reliability Award - Power
(3rd best SAMEA). By the
end of the first quarter the
HSE statistics board showed
999 days without lost time
accident. After intense
months of scheduled outages,
the Annual Performance Test
was completed successfully
on the 20th March on both
fuel gas and fuel oil. Excellent
results which are the outcome
of great efforts! A sincere
*thank you* to all staff! On
the 24th 4 March, Sohar II was
inaugurated by the Minister
of Environment and Climate
Affairs, H.E. Mohammed Al
Tobi. In May, 35% of the shares
in our Owner company, Al
Batinah Power Company, will
be offered to the public.
Several scheduled outages
happened in the first quarter
of 2014. Amongst others
the following works were
completed: gas turbines minor
inspections, gas turbines air
intake filters replacement,
replacement and re-routing
of gas turbines fuel hoses
(fretting issue), harmonics
filter installation, gas turbine
12 generator bushing
replacement (high hydrogen
losses issue) and steam
turbine generator bearings
inspection (turning gear fails
issue). The scheduled outages
for the winter period 2013-
2014 ended on the 11th
March and the total amount
of megawatt hours scheduled
outages has been within the
15% winter allowance.
The circulating water
pumps were overhauled once
again. So far, approximately
1 ton additional weight
has been added to each
pump’s inner casing and
approximately 2.5 ton
additional weight has been
added to each pump’s motor
to maintain vibrations.
A deal was made between
STOMO and EPCC to close
approximately 200 punch list
items in return for equipment,
services and spare parts in
addition to the EPC contract
requirements.
Gas turbine 12 generator
hydrogen consumption stays
abnormally high, even after
the replacement of the leaking
bushing. The steam turbine
turning gear fails remain
unsolved after the generator
bearings inspection.
Three short duration forced
outages happened in the
first quarter of 2014. Only
one combustion chamber
acceleration event in the first
quarter of 2014. Commercial
availability year-to-date
is 99.82%. Commercial
availability contract-year-to-
date is 99.89%. A few more
statistics can be seen in the
graphs. The fuel demand
model is yet to be approved by
OPWP.
For the second quarter of
2014 we foresee preparing
for the ISO 14001 and OHSAS
18001 certification and
working with EPCC for closing
the approximately 650 open
punch list items and 300
open warranty claims. Also,
two lengthy underground
firefighting HDPE pipe
sections will be replaced
by coated steel pipe in the
second quarter.

Our Plants - Business Summary - contd. Fleet Maintenance (FM)
In the first quarter of 2014, the Fleet Maintenance team continued with their winter maintenance schedule. During this period the big events were the FM team being involved in the steam turbines inspections,
executing these new activities in Marafiq/KSA (ST30 and ST40) and Barka II (ST1 & ST2). In parallel the team was also completing the gas turbines combustion inspection as per annual schedule.
What was interesting too look at was not only the professional way the team was performing the maintenance activities, but the way people in the team interacted, how they operate together without explanations, even with contractors, how the entire assembly work has a unique, strong and precise mechanism.
I consider this is one of the highest achievements from the management point of view, seeing your team acting together, overpassing all issues, understanding each other, knowing how to approach the work in any plant, keeping calm, even under stressful and irritating conditions, performing the job accurate and with a spotless HSE record, but in the same time learning and enhancing their experience and keeping a family atmosphere during the entire project.
In this respect I need to highlight the major contribution of our project manager, Lieven Van Zele, who was continuously pushing the team towards a professional behavior, doubled by a friendly approach. The final result was a strong team ready to face any challenge, mature enough to support tasks outside the existing contractual specifications, experienced enough to work standalone and to lead a group of contractors towards a successful project.
I want to thank everybody in the team for their commitment and wish all a happy well deserved holiday.

GDF SUEZ is pleased to announce that it has acquired West Coast Energy (“WCE”), a leading independent wind energy developer. This acquisition strengthens GDF SUEZ’s commitment to expand its wind portfolio in the UK.
West Coast Energy has been operating in the UK for over 18 years and has successfully developed 650 MW of wind capacity, representing 9% of the installed onshore wind capacity in the UK. WCE has a significant pipeline of onshore wind development projects under evaluation with a capacity of 200 MW. GDF SUEZ has been working in partnership with West Coast Energy to develop wind projects since 2008. West Coast Energy currently employs 55 people in its headquarters in Mold.
What is Heartbleed and how do I make myself safe? There’s a good chance you
have heard of Heartbleed. It
has, after all, been causing
the internet a great deal of
heartache. This security cock-
up has left a great portion
of internet information
unsecured.
On April 7, a fixed version of
OpenSSL, which is where the
issue lies, was released to seal
up the security hole. It was also
the time the issue was publicly
disclosed and the full extent of
the damage began to emerge.
Because vulnerability is a
problem at an internet level,
Heartbleed has left vast
swathes of private internet
data prime for the pickings.
Essentially the security keys
used to keep your password
and names you use to keep
your data safe could be
compromised by anyone with
the know-how.
Large numbers of websites
have been affected, including
some of the biggest on the
internet. So here’s our guide to
what Heartbleed is and how to
protect against it.
Can I catch Heartbleed? No, even if you frequent
some especially dark corners
of the internet. Although
widely reported as a virus or
hack, Heartbleed is actually
a vulnerability. Imagine the
internet is a castle and SSL/
TLS encryption is a part of
the wall and moat around it
used to keep out invaders. A
mistake by a German software
programmer basically left a
small door open in the wall for
invaders to get in.
Should I be concerned?Yes and no. Heartbleed
makes it possible for people

to extract sensitive data such
as your name and password
information thereby allowing
them to impersonate you.
It also means your personal
internet life is open to other
viewers, including (potentially)
your bank account or credit
card numbers.
A number of websites have
already patched the OpenSSL
vulnerability, but that is only
half of the problem. You see,
if somebody has managed to
sneak into the internet castle
through the aforementioned
small door and has seen your
password, no amount of
security updates to a website
will change that fact (unless
the website forces a password
reset, of course).
What precautions should I take?Website Mashable created
a useful Heartbleed Hitlist.
The list shows a number of
the affected websites and the
actions you need to take to
be safe. The list is US-centric
but it covers most of the major
bases.
At worst you will need to
reset your password so that
anyone who knows your old
password is no longer able
to access your information.
Facebook, for instance, requires
a password change. Instagram,
Twitter and Pinterest were also
affected, while LinkedIn was
okay because it never used ‘the
offending implementation of
OpenSSL’. Some companies,
such as Google, have advised a
password change just to be on
the safe side.
We would suggest you
change any password where
you have been advised to do
so. It’s a hassle, granted, but
the alternative is somebody
pretending to be you for
criminal reasons.
There is, of course, little point
in changing your password if
the website involved is still yet
to patch the problem. You will
need to wait for confirmation
before proceeding in this
instance.
Can I safeguard against future vulnerabilities?Technically when a software
programming error or bug
hands ‘hackers’ the keys to
personal data there is little you
can do. But you can at least
limit the damage by having
different passwords for every
internet service you use. If
your password is the same for
everything it only takes one
password leak for you to be
vulnerable.
Use multiple passwords and
consider changing them every
few months or so. Avoid storing
passwords and/or sensitive
data on a device without a
passcode, just in case you lose
the device or it gets stolen.
A number of websites use
two-step authentication.
Google, for instance, requires
you to enter your email address
and password and then a six-
digit passcode that is texted
to you. Access is only granted
if you have the two steps of
authentication. This will make
you more secure.
You could also use any tool
that allows you to logout of
any and all devices, Facebook
being one example. This will
force you and anyone else to
re-login, which will require
your new password. Therefore,
anyone who shouldn’t be
looking will be locked out.
Anything else? Most websites (affected or not)
will have an official webpage,
email or statement out there
for the benefit of their users.
A quick Google should bring
up the spiel you need and any
specific advice you should
undertake to be safe.

1. You were instrumental
in establishing STOMO as a
single entity managing six
O&M contracts. Looking
back do you think, it was
a good decision to have a
central organization rather
than independent O&M
companies?
This is a really good question,
first of all the organisational
structure was well thought out
before I arrived in STOMO and
in retrospect I believe it was the
an excellent decision. I think
the type of structure envisaged
by my predecessor provides a
focused vision which is a key
trait of effective leadership,
our type of structure keeps all
levels of STOMO focused on one
vision or purpose. Additionally
the centralized organisation
has helped to increase our
organisation maturity at a much
faster pace than a single entity
possibly could. The organisation
has grown into a mini-SAMEA
and we have been able to
obtain scale affect savings in
procurement, IT, finance and
human resources.
I also believe this type of
structure leads to reduced
conflict which can happen when
only one person or a small group
at the top makes important
decisions, our consensus
building approach to decision
making provides additional
strength.
Of course one of the
challenges to this the structure
is it can create bureaucracy,
red tape and inefficiency, but I
do believe our structure is not
lethargic or inefficient, in fact
some might say we move too
quick.
2. Are you confident that
STOMO brand occupies a
special slot in minds of its
employees as well as the
brand building exercises for
external agencies? How far do
you think you were successful
in this?
When I think back many years
ago when we were initially
working on creating a tagline
and brand we held several
brainstorming sessions and
one of our past employees
Vicky Campeart came up
with the tagline, “Producing
the Essentials” immediately
the team was excited and the
tagline and brand was born. I
believe we have done a lot in
terms of physically branding
STOMO and many of our plants
have hosted tours for students
educating them in the areas of
conservation and environmental
leadership. Additionally we have
been actively involved in the
Oman Power and Water Summit
and this year hosting the global
Siemens V94.2 gas turbine
conference. I do believe there is
always more to do in terms of
Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) initiates focused on people,
environment, governance
and social improvements.
Initiatives sponsoring youth,
environmental conservation
and wellness campaigns to
improve the lives for the people
in Oman could be a way forward
to build on our success.
3. As engineers we always
talk about bathtub curve
for equipment. Do you think
the same concept applies to
STOMO as an organisation?
Well for some of us maybe a
definition is required, according
to Dictionary.com the bathtub
curve definition is that of
resembling an end-to-end
section of one of those claw-
footed antique bathtubs. In
theory it describes the expected
failure rate (in our case) power
and water plants with time.
Starting as initially high, pre and
post commercial operations
date and then dropping to
near zero for most of the plants
lifetime and then rising again
as the plant ages and tires
out. I believe it is very similar to
an automobile, we have also
observed cars that travel greater
than 500,000 miles like a Dubai
Taxi and then we see other
vehicles like a personal car that
breaks down to retirement after
200,000 miles. I would say it
depends how you drive the car?
Are you driving without starting
and stopping it too many times,
are you’re completing the proper
service, do you maintain low
speed never driving for extended
periods with the pedal to the
floor. I believe our plants are
well maintained and certainly
not exercised like a merchant

facility so we will maintain near
zero for longer than expected
while STOMO is more like an
organic organisation, which
unlike mechanical processes is
completely dependent on the
energy and dedication of our
people, we will not tire out.
4. Do you think that five years
is a short time to accomplish
what you wanted, especially
considering the diversity of
the six STOMO plants?
I must say that the changes
that have occurred in the last
five years are remarkable to me.
We have had expansive growth
from 50 to over 360 employees
and many additional plants.
During my tenure I did not
have a master plan or extreme
vision of what STOMO should
look like. I was always focused
on continuous improvement
in people development and
plant process improvement, I
understood that if we focused
in these areas the results will
come and we were right. I am
proud of many things such as
our training programs and focus
on doing what is right with our
people. I always thought to push
us hard enough to stretch the
business and our people while
realizing there are not an infinite
amount of projects that can be
accomplished at one time.
5. How do you rate the success
of your attempts to create
a second level of leadership
in STOMO through different
methods (I connect, Meta Next
Gen, Mentoring, trainings...)
I think we have taken some
excellent initiatives to expose
people to leadership training,
mentoring and people
development, the area of
technical development needs
additional emphasis. Oman
leads the Gulf in many areas
including localization but
additional support by the
authorities is required to
develop trade and vocational
programs that can enable young
Omani’s to be the successful as
motor mechanics, millwrights
or electricians. In STOMO our
strength is our people so we must
stay focused and committed to
training and development and
expose opportunities for growth.
The “I Connect” program is an
excellent imitative that requires
dedication and commitment
from all participants to ensure
success so we can be leaders in
this area.
6. Going back to early 2009
when you started your
mission and the long term
objectives you set, what were
the difficulties/challenges
over the last five years?
While I have never liked the term
challenges I would say they are
more like opportunities. While
I have had some opportunities
for improvement, we had many
challenges through spring
2011 and I thank everyone
including the STOMO Board for
the support. I think the whole
STOMO experience has grown
me immensely as I have had the
opportunity to work with great
people and had the pleasure to
be part of the STOMO family.
7. How do you reflect on your
tenure with STOMO?
Simply Excellent! What a great
joy, I learned new skills and
professionally developed, I have
a sense of accomplishment and
pride; I was part of something
bigger than myself. The people
at STOMO are a pleasure to work
with and make it enjoyable to
come to work.
8. What were your most
memorable moments in

race particularly.
 COD at Barka II, finally.
 Laughing in the hallway and

achievement?
I stood on top of the shoulders

the success, I simply got out
of the way and let them get on
with it. There is not one great
achievement because “coming
together is a beginning. Keeping
together is progress. Working

10. What is the most important
message you would like to
leave to STOMO employee?
Spend your time collaborating
with your colleagues to improve
our business and your skills, listen
to the people with experience but
also look at new ways to do old
things; this is how you can add
value. Ask yourself, if you had an
advertisement in your plant where
you provide a service better than
anyone else, what would it say?
Ask your Supervisor for
additional responsibilities so you
may increase your knowledge.
Understand that opportunity
presents itself to people that learn
and grow and not necessarily
to people due to time based
seniority. I have always said
that you can have 15 years
of experience with one year
repeated over and over or you
can have 15 different years of
experiences. Who would you hire?
11. How do you feel when the
employees refer to you as the
‘Employees Manager’?
Well I must say I am honored,
being considered a man
of the people is one of the
greatest compliments one may
receive. I came from humble
beginnings where my family
were all factory type workers so
to be given an opportunity of
influence provides you with the
opportunity and responsibility
to spread the values of mutual
respect, fairness, cooperation,
shared goals and vision.
12. What daily exercise do you
plan now that you do not have
to climb the stairs?
My new position just so happens
to be on the third floor although
the stairs are inside, I need a little
more than this exercise in my
future, being part of the over
50 crowd means I must spend
additional time focusing on
wellness.

But I was unable to go to an Institute following a fixed schedule. Then I got this opportunity for online learning. Now I can learn English any time from my home or office.
Do you get enough free time to do this training? If I plan properly, I have lot of free time to do these training programs.
What is your opinion about the Online Language Training
program offered by company? The Online Language Training program offered by the Company is very good. Now I am doing a foundation level in a Diploma program (Electrical Engineering). As I was doing Online English Training, I could score very well in the ‘Diploma’ selection exam.
You are learning from home also, does your family support this?My family supports me a lot. They know that in this competitive world, I can achieve more in life only through better equipping me with higher education, experience & hard work.
What is your message for your colleagues in STOMO?STOMO provides different learning opportunities to employees. There is GPiLEARN, INSTINCT, Online Language Training, Scholarships for higher education etc. So company is interested in employee development. Management is spending money. It is our duty to best utilize these opportunities. If I am not using them I am not reciprocating the trust shown by company on me.
I want to thank STOMO for the different personal development opportunities provided by the company.

Did you know that...
1. What are your objectives
in your new position?
My key objective is to
improve performance and
understanding of existing
systems, while increasing my
staff accountability for their
specific areas of responsibility.
With the emphasis on high
plant reliability and availability.
Continue to Develop the
operations Department
personnel, ensuring they are
ready or able to perform the
next higher job responsibility
(Succession Planning).
Focus on building a strong
Operations team, by utilizing
the department’s strengths
and improving in areas I
identify as weak.
Coach, Mentor, and train
my team to build strong
understanding of Safety and
company Safety Rules.
2. How do you segregate
the time now on the new
position between your
subordinates and the
management?
I divide my time between
completing my direct duties
and assigned operational
tasks, training and building
the operations team, as
well as solving issues with
preventative action or
corrective action to prevent
reoccurrence.
3. I heard that once a person
goes to a higher position,
managing people takes
more time than to manage
the technical issues, what
do you think? How do you
find it?
I believe not all managers are
the same, as god made us all
different. It also depends on
how the manager and his team
interrelate. My work experience

know them very well.

GDF SUEZ has signed a partnership agreement with Toshiba for development of its nuclear programme in the United Kingdom. This solid industrial partnership gives new impetus to NuGeneration Ltd (NuGen), which was created to develop a new nuclear power plant on the West Cumbria coast in Northwest England. The plant will be built utilizing Westinghouse AP1000 technology and will achieve a capacity of 3,400 MW. The terms of the agreement provide for Toshiba to own 60% of NuGen along with GDF SUEZ, shareholder with a 40% stake who will bring its extensive nuclear plant operatorship experience. The choice of the AP1000 technology aligns with UK Government’s ambition to see a diversity of technologies in the new nuclear programme.

GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d’Energies continues its commitment to fight against energy poverty with its investment in “Les Toits de l’Espoir,” a cooperative enterprise (Scop) that renovates and improves the energy efficiency of social housing for very low-income renters. This is the third social enterprise investment in France by GDF SUEZ Rassembleurs d’Energies, thanks to which it is strengthening its coverage of the country. A first investment was made in 2012, in Foncière Chênelet. That enterprise has historically been active in the Pas-de-Calais region where it builds high energy performance social housing. In December 2013, a second investment was concluded with the property company “Habitat et Humanisme,” which is a major player in the Rhône-Alpes region involved in energy renovation of very low-income social housing.
