Farcical Fun in Pardon Me, Prime Minister
Laughs galore are promised in the S.O.D.S production of the hilarious farce, Pardon Me, Prime Minister, at the Regal Theatre from Wednesday 16 until Saturday 19 May.
It’s the late 1970s and in 10 Downing Street the Prime Minister is putting the final touches to his speech announcing a new moral crusade. All forms of immoral pleasure will be taxed out of existence and Britain will regain her self-respect as a nation - not to mention collecting a lot more taxes! But someone is planning to spoil the PM’s day in a big way. She’s not just an angry lap dancer who stands to lose her job, she also has a big surprise for him - she’s his daughter, the result of a fling at the party Conference in Brighton 20 odd years ago.....
Mayhem ensues in No 10 with misunderstandings and mistaken identities, scantily dressed young ladies hidden in cupboards and people bursting through doors at exactly the wrong moment!
Performances are at 7.30pm each evening from Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 May, with a matinee at 2.30pm on the Saturday. Tickets, £12 (concessions £10), are on sale now at The Regal Theatre box office, 01449 612825, www.regalstowmarket.co.uk
Elveden CEVA Primary School and Cavendish Primary School joined in the fun by wearing orange, selling orange cakes and drinks and making and wearing bobbles, whilst learning about the important message to look after elderly relatives particularly during the winter period. Elveden CEVA Primary School is continuing with the Bobble theme and are attempting to break the Guinness World Record for making the largest pom pom!
Clare Primary School held a tea party for 100 grandparents. Mrs Joan Horner, Headteacher at the school said “We were delighted that so many grandparents were able to join us for the fundraising event, some travelled from as far away as London and Kent. I’m sure that the
children will have very fond memories of Bobble Day and we are really pleased that the funds will be used to support many services provided by Age UK Suffolk for older people in the county.”
Otley College held their own Bobble Day a week earlier and encouraged students to wear orange and make bobbles and cakes during the day.
Elsewhere in the county staff from Legal & General PLC made a donation to dress in orange, and sold orange cakes during coffee breaks. Age UK Suffolk Day Centres held special orange tea parties and all the Age UK Suffolk charity shop windows looked very bright and colourful displaying all their orange clothes and bric-a-brac.

Organisations, schools and clubs in Suffolk joined together to have some fun and raise awareness about Age UK’s Spread the Warmth Campaign to prevent older people suffering through cold and isolation.
Age UK Bobble Day was held on Friday 10th February 2012, when many people adopted the “orange” theme to raise funds in unique ways.

Third year University Campus Suffolk student Abbie Elizabeth is set to take Stowmarkets night life by storm!
Abbie currently studies at UCS in Ipswich. At the beginning of her third year she took it upon herself to try and create a better night life for students also studying at UCS. Abbie approached the Student Union’s Managing Director and organised a way to take the student night life on campus up a notch. She went with a business plan and while she didn’t get everything she had wanted she came away having created her own job in promotions and event management. Abbie thought of a name ‘OMG’ and created various events including an all American Frat Party in Kai, the Student and Public bar on the developing Ipswich Waterfront. She now wants to bring her knowledge and experience to Stowmarket.
Since coming to the end of her studies Abbie thought to herself where else she could try and improve and decided to go back to her home ground. Having grown up in Needham Market Abbie has had her fair share of nights out in Stowmarket and while they are often satisfactory she strives to improve the nightlife. Abbie believes that Stowmarket lacks ‘spark’ and something special on a night out and believes with a little tweak here and there it could turn into an exciting place to be
Her first port of call was creating an event which she named ‘Krush’. She then picked Xcel as a venue and went about planning what to do. Abbie thought that a UV party would be great as a Launch Event so that’s what she settled on. The genre is old school chart hits from the last decade that will have a little something for everyone. The first fifty people will get a free glass of bubbly to add that special something and there may even be a red carpet for that ultra glam feel. You can expect promo girls in tutu’s, face painters and UV cocktails and UV shots created especially by Xcel, that actually glow under UV light! Dress as ultra violet as you can and we are sure that you will not be disappointed in Abbie’s first steps to improve S t o w m a r k e t ’ s nightlife.

practice in December 2011 to lead the nursing team and to run the Minor Illness Clinic. The Minor Illness Clinic can be booked via the automated telephone system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or alternatively via the receptionist in normal working hours. Rachel can see a variety of conditions but if you are unsure if the Clinic is suitable for you please ask the Receptionist for advice.
This month have I have decided to be
a little different and review 2 films that have already hit the big screen and are now being released on DVD / Blu-Ray. 1 film this month and one next
The first release is ‘My Week with Marilyn’. I wanted to see this movie when it first came out but the local cinema only had it on release for a week and a bit and it was gone before I knew it.
This film is based on the book writing by Colin Clark who was 3rd assistant director on the film ‘The prince and the Showgirl’ which Marilyn Monroe was in the United Kingdom for a week to film. Clark Played by Eddie Redmayne alleges that he had a brief relationship with Ms Monroe played by Michelle Williams after her then husband Arthur Miller had left the country. Monroe has her acting coach Paula Strasburg played by Zoe Wanamaker which drives Laurence Oliver played by British institution Kenneth Brannagh up the wall. Which by the end of the film Oliver announces to Clark that working with Monroe has killed his desire to direct ever again!
Clark starts the film by trying to woo wardrobe assistant Lucy Played by Emma Watson. She initially refuses his advances as she doesn’t trust men on
set as they are after one thins and one thing only. Eventually she agrees to a date but after a while notices Clark’s infatuation and the attention he pays towards Ms Monroe. Clark is warned that Monroe will break his heart if he continues with this ‘relationship’
When watching this film I fully understood why Williams got her Oscar nod for this performance, it was outstanding. She had Marilyn Monroe’s signature moves perfectly, well as perfect as someone who is impersonating can. Her voice is amazing and apparently she started off in the role lip syncing to the singing sections but said it felt all wrong, so went to vocal lessons to improve.
As always my screen idol Dame Judi Dench adds another role to her repertoire with the effortless nature that I know, love and admire from Dame Judi. She just oozes professionalism and carries this over to her role as Sybil Thorndike who covers Monroe when she is making her endless mistakes and fluffs cues.
For me this film was a pleasure to watch, the whole cast was an excellent choice and made it an easy watch. I thoroughly recommend this film if you are stuck at what to rent or watch on which ever box office service you may have access to.

Of Your Local Children’s Hospice.
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is asking their supporters to hold cake days and coffee mornings to raise money and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Now that local councils have waived the fee for road closures during the Jubilee period there is no better time to take advantage and get together to celebrate. The best thing is that it’s a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for your local children’s hospice.
The EACH fundraising team have put together a pack including hints and tips to make the most of your event with recipe and games ideas as well as ways to add a fundraising element to the day. You can get your pack by contacting your local fundraising office on 01473 237242
Nikki Brown, EACH Suffolk Fundraiser said: “Any excuse for a party is an excuse to raise money for charity - and we can help you make the most of this wonderful opportunity to get together and feel that fantastic community spirit. We have even had one already in our Treehouse woodland garden! The money and awareness raised will help us continue to support local life-threatened children and their families.
“These parties and coffee mornings can only be positive in raising awareness in the local community and funds towards the work of EACH.”

As soon as guest entered the John Peel centre they were greeted to the sight of colourful stalls selling a variety of wonderful local items, a frenzy of people and piles of delicious cake standing on beautifully decorated tables with vintage table clothes and floral arrangements made in tea cup. Guests enjoyed ‘proper’ tea from real vintage china cups and saucers kindly donated by the Suffolk
Vintage China Company, and then helped themselves to as much cake as their hearts desired. There was musical entertainment in the form of Simeon Pattison and Olly Chalk, this added to the relaxed and fun atmosphere of the event. The Vintage Tea Party was a huge success with a total of nearly £2500 being raised! It was overwhelming to see so many people enjoying the event. It would not have been
possible without the help and hard work of Jessica Pattison, Rebecca Ridley, Jessica Pike, Devon Paris, Shelia Ravenscroft, the John Peel Centre, all the people who attended the event and of course all the wonderful cake bakers.

Most people are aware that a healthy diet and exercise are important to reduce the risk of physical health problems and recent evidence also suggests that good nutrition and exercise may be just as important for our mental health.
Eating regularly, between 3 and 5 times throughout the day helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Missing meals, especially breakfast, leads to low blood sugar and this causes low mood, irritability and fatigue.
The brain has a messenger chemical in the brain called serotonin, which is believed to improve how we feel. More serotonin is made when more of an amino acid called tryptophan enters the brain. Having protein at every meal ensures a continuous supply of tryptophan. Tryptophan is also found in carbohydrates, and the eating of sweet comfort foods such as cakes and chocolate has been said to improve mood. However there is not enough evidence to support a physiological basis for this effect, and some of the pleasure from eating these foods may come from their strong associations with reward and special occasion.
Eating a wide variety of foods helps to ensure we obtain all the micronutrients needed for optimum health. If you have bread at one meal, try cereal or potatoes, rice or sweet potatoes at the others. Make sure you include at least 2 portions of different fruits and/or vegetables and a protein food at each meal.
Not drinking enough fluid has significant implications for mental health. The early effects of even mild dehydration can affect our feelings and behaviour causing irritability, loss of concentration and reduced mental functioning.
Coffee, colas, some energy drinks and tea all contain caffeine, which some people use to boost energy levels. However, in large quantities caffeine can increase blood pressure, anxiety, depressive symptoms and sleep problems.
Alcohol has a depressant effect on the brain and can result in a rapid worsening of our mood. It is also a toxin that has to be deactivated by the liver. During this detoxification process the body uses thiamin, zinc and other nutrients and this can deplete reserves, especially if our diet is poor. Thiamin and other vitamin deficiencies can cause low mood, irritability and/or aggressive behaviour, as well as more serious and long-term mental health problems.
Exercise leads to the release of endorphins – feel-good chemicals in the brain that help us to relax and to feel happy. Exercise is particularly important for people with depression as it also gives structure and purpose to the day.

Karen Finch from local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, will again be trading her audiology role for one of a Quiz Master, to help raise money for charity.
Together with the help of local entrepreneur and fundraiser Steve Florey from Hudson Signs, the two will be raising much-needed funds for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People.
The quiz night will take place on Sunday 13th May 2012 (7.00pm) at Greshams Sports Club, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night.
Karen Finch MD of The Hearing Care Centre, based on High Street, Ipswich said “Bring your family, friends,
colleagues, neighbours, the man/w o m a n who claims
to know everything(!) for a night of camaraderie, fun and spirited rivalry. It will be a great night out!”
This the third year the trivia fundraiser has been organised with over 200 members of the public raising £2,800, so far from previous years. The aim this year is to raise £1,500 on the night.
Teams for the quiz can include between 4 - 6 members. Entry is £3.00pp (nibbles included), and the winners will take home a top prize of an amazing £200!
Hearing dogs change lives. They alert their deaf owners to sounds we take for granted, providing greater independence,
confidence and security. Most are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets. It costs over £5,000 to train and keep one hearing dog for its working life.
The Hearing Care Centre is raising money to sponsor a new Hearing Dog puppy and follow its progress through its training and to eventually be placed with a deaf owner.
The company is also looking for local companies to donate prizes for their bumper prize draw and auction, in return for exposure, prior to, and at the event.

Stowmarket Residents Are Learning How Their
Dog’s Mind WorksStowmarket Rugby Club are hosting new Dog Workshops, designed to give owners an opportunity to learn more about their pet dog.
The workshops cover a wide range of aspects such as gaining and maintaining leadership, learning about dog’s body language and being able to successfully communicate with their dog without the need of force, pain or gadgets, making it possible to eliminate all non-medical behavioural problems.
These workshops are unique, as unlike the traditional training classes, these are specifically for owners only, enabling them to gain the most out of their time spent within the class, and then carrying out everything they have learnt from the comfort of their own home. This is far better for both owner and dog to enjoy within their natural everyday home environment.
The workshops have attracted
owners of all ages, the youngest being just 13 years old who attended each session with his mother and of which he thoroughly enjoyed. Dog ownership is part of the whole family so it’s great to be able to share knowledge and techniques with everyone involved.

Ice cap moves to Stowmarket Golf Club as new Captain drives in.
The Igloo, polar bears and snowstorm which appeared on the 1st tee on Saturday 31 March at Stowmarket Golf Club’s newly elected Captain and Chairman Ron Woodham’s drive in was more a reflection of his pre –retirement business life as Managing Director of HRP Ltd, the Bury based refrigeration wholesaler than the weather conditions of the day.
Geoff Scott, Stowmarket’s Club Manager teed up Ron’s ball who, suitably attired in a polar bear skin and despite menacing growls from a number of surrounding members dressed up as prowling polar bears, managed to hit a 202 mtr drive, remarking afterwards that this was probably his best shot for
some time and perhaps should always wear the bearskin when playing golf in the future.
The low temperature theme was put together and made by Vice Captain Dick Taylor and his wife Alison and kept secret from the Captain until he arrived on the tee.
Amazingly, his wife Lynn correctly forecasted the distance hit and was presented with a bottle of champagne by husband Ron.
A draw for a year long reserved car park space was won by Peter Scates.
The day was extremely well supported by family, friends and club members and raised a magnificent sum of £670 towards Ron’s chosen charity Motor Neurone Disease.

Abi to carry the Olympic Torch
Stowmarket High School pupil Abi Whitefield has been selected to carry the Olympic Torch for the summer 2012 Olympics.
The Y11 pupil who will be sitting her GCSEs in June was nominated by her older brother. Abi spends much of her free time volunteering for Suffolk Volleyball and for the last two years has won the Suffolk Volleyball Young Volunteer of the Year award. Abi also volunteers at the Museum of East Anglian Life (MEAL) and has been around the premises since she was five years old. In recent years she has been helping with event management at MEAL.
As well as her busy volunteering schedule Abi was also a carer for her mum who suffered from serious illnesses up until last July
when sadly she passed away.
She found out the news on Friday but had to keep it a secret until the official announcement by LOCOG was made today.
Abi will carry the torch for 300m in Colchester on Friday 6th July.
Head teacher Keith Penn said ‘This is a matter of enormous pride for Abi, for her family and for the school. I can think of no-one who deserves this honour more and we shall all be cheering her on.’

Rev Up For Hospice’s Motorcycle Run From
Stowmarket AreaCalling all bikers! A date has been set for St Elizabeth Hospice’s Motorcycle Run.
Hundreds of bikers from all over Suffolk are expected to sign up for the event which takes place on Sunday 24th June to raise money for the charity.
Bikers will set off from Stonham Barns, near Stowmarket, and finish at Felixstowe Motorcycle show, where there will be lots of dealers and clubs in attendance.
It will be a scenic route through the countryside.
Several hundred bikers are expected to attend and raise thousands of pounds for the Hospice, which cares for people in Suffolk with a progressive illness and provides support for their families.
The event is supported by Rob Day and Derek Barker, of Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists, a charity which aims to improve riding standards, and Ray Walters, owner of Orwell Motorcycles in Ipswich.
Mr Barker said: “We hope the 2012 St Elizabeth Hospice Motorcycle Run will be as well supported as the event has
been in previous years.”
The Hospice’s community fundraising team leader Rachael Maidment said: “We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who took part last year and wanted to raise money for the Hospice. The bikers were so generous and there was a great atmosphere on the day. Thank you all so much and we hope you will be back this year, along with some people taking part for the first time.”
It costs just £5 to take part and bikers are encouraged to get sponsorship. Bikers cannot take part unless they have registered.

We have six bells in the tower at Barking but can usually only muster up to 5 ringers for Sunday services. If we don’t get more ringers then there’s a risk we may not be able to ring for services in the future.
We are a friendly band of ringers and would welcome new recruits to our Monday night practices and, after some basic training, for Sunday
service ringing. You don’t have to be super-fit to ring, if you can push a child on a swing then you’re fit enough to ring. So, if you’ve ever wondered how we do it or fancied giving it a go then contact us or come along to our practice night on Mondays between 8 and 9 pm.

What a QR Code Can Be Used For
QR codes can be used for a variety of different uses. Many companies nowadays including Macy’s, Target, Best Buy and Starbucks are utilising the handy little barcodes to use them for ads or specials inside stores. Advertisers can embed QR codes on billboards to send mobile phone users to a link containing more information on a product or service.
Recently, while planting our garden, I noticed QR codes on the sides of the bags of seeds we planted, which sent me to a link showing proper planting patterns, growing information and other tidbits regarding the product I was putting in the ground.
Businesses can utilise QR codes in their shop window to send users to a web page containing hours of business, a menu and even reviews on the business.
How do I Scan a QR Code?OK, so you own a smartphone, see a code s o m e w h e r e in the wild, and you wish to scan it and see what’s next. To utilise a QR code, you need two simple things: 1) a phone with a camera and 2) an application on your phone that can scan the code and interact with the code on your behalf.
Depending on your phone model, you have a few options:
Android PhonesFire up your Market application and search for “Barcode Scanner”. Barcode Scanner will let you scan regular bar codes (think on the side of a book or
cereal box) or QR codes as well.
If you want an alternative, check out Google Googles.
iPhone and iPod TouchIf you’re an iPhone or iPod Touch owner, the recommended solution is QuickMark. This application is only £0.99 and is a fully featured scanner.
For a free alternative, again check out Google Goggles, part of the Google application available in the iTunes App Store.
BlackBerryThe best application, according to sources I’ve asked is MobileTag. I cannot give first hand accounts of this application because I’ve not tried it myself. Another QR code scanner that got good mentions is I-Nigma, which is said to be better for complex codes that contain V-card (contact information) files.
NokiaNokia phone owners will find a great solution in UpCode. This application, available in the Ovi Store, will quickly scan your QR code and send you to the destination with ease. It’s available for all Nokia smartphones with a camera.
