Bill Campbell and his team from ‘awae up north’ put on a superb Burns night on Saturday which was thoroughly enjoyed by a packed clubhouse.
He expertly piped in the born aloft Haggis,Chef Peter Sibbert adorned in a Glaswegian hairstyle and hat followed, they were followed by Andrew bearing a delicious looking rib of beef and Alex Brown holding up two crossed bottles of the finest scotch whiskey.
The dinner commenced with the Selkirk grace being expertly proffered by
Alex Brown
Bill’s haggis address in full Scottish dialect with deft use of his sgian-dubh, included what can only be described as a lunge attack on last year’s Captain Ivor Evans who quickly recovered exclaiming that he presumed his Welsh origins had something to do with this unexpected assault!
Lawrie Reekie had the house in fits of laughter during his brilliant delivery of The Immortal memory of Robbie Burns. Using wise and diplomatic words our Captain James Lewis proposed a toast to the lasses to which Sheila Cummings, on behalf of the ladies charmingly responded, with the merest hint of some of the shortcomings of men!!

Work on Cedars Park Community Centre to start
soon Work to build a new community centre and football pitch for residents in Cedars Park, Stowmarket will start soon following the completion of all necessary paperwork to let works begin.
Peter Burrows, Head of Economy at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “This just shows what can be achieved when communities are engaged and listened to. It is a fantastic achievement after years of team work between us and a number of parties including MP David Ruffley, Cedars Park
Residents Association, Mid Suffolk Councillors and the Community Centre CIC. At a time when the economic climate is tough, we have been able to ensure that this scheme, which has been promised to the local residents of
Cedars Park, has finally been achieved.”
Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Counci,l said: “I’m very pleased to hear that the Cedars Park residents will now get the community centre they have so long strived for. This is also good news for the construction industry in these difficult economic times. There has been a lot of hard work by officers from the District Council, Politicians and Crest Nicholson and I’m sure we are all looking forward to seeing work start on site shortly.”

awaited Community Centre will finally be built. James Moody, Managing Director for Crest Nicholson, said: “We would like to thank the Residents, Councillors and Council Officers who have worked with us over the past four years to move this project from a concept to delivery. Cedars Park has evolved considerably
over the past ten years and the new community centre and football pitch will not only provide a focus and sense of place, but will further ensure Cedars Park is not just a development of homes, but also has the ability to develop as a community with these new facilities.”
Building work on the site will commence on 1 July 2012 with completion set for early 2013.
The Community Centre will have facilities that all local residents can use such as the main sports hall, changing facilities, kitchen, bar and also a senior football pitch.
The Centre is part of a wider application that has been approved for 209 one, two, three and four bedroom houses and flats, three commercial units within the village centre, new access to the Cedars Park Primary School, public open space and improvement works to the existing balancing pond, plus associated infrastructure and ancillary works.

So, it was the Friday before the weekend that we put together the Flyer for February, and I look at the weather forecast and see that we are due for some SNOW...Being the big kid I am, I couldn’t miss the chance to get a snowman picture on the front page.With the help of Jennifer Thomson, Sam, Kelly & Olwyn Clayden we set about building the artwork. 4 hours later many cups of tea and coffee and we have a 6 foot 6 inch snowman and his son, seen on the front page.As well as snowman building this month we also welcome Mel, she will be managing the inbound requests to advertise and generally helping with all aspects of the Flyer. Hoot’s Welly WalkThe Mid Suffolk’s Countryside team is putting on activities for kids of all ages to get outside at Needham Lake this half term. For younger children, come and join us on Hoot’s Welly Walk and discover signs of winter at the Lake. Find out where Hoot lives, how he makes his nest and make a momento to take home. We will meet at Mill meadow, Needham Lake at 10.30am on Monday 13 February, for an hour’s family stroll. Welly Walks cost £2 per child, accompanying adults free.
Discover Needham Lake’s very own Treasure Island!Uncover the clues that will lead you to the treasure. Complete the challenges and gain the password to cross onto the secret island. A great opportunity to visit a part of Needham Lake not normally open to the public. The event is on Wednesday 15 February runs from 12noon – 3.30pm at Mill Meadow, Needham Market and costs £3 per child, accompanying adults are free.

invited to consultation
over Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre
A meeting is taking place at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre in Stowmarket later in February to give local disabled people the chance to comment on proposed changes to its accessible changing room.
The meeting is taking place at 10.30am on Wednesday 22nd February in the Leisure Centre bar and anyone with a disability who would like to come along and take part is welcome.
The event is part of a recent consultation exercise to ask local disabled people and their carers in Mid Suffolk whether the Leisure Centre should create a ‘changing places’ facility.
Changing Places toilets offer more facilities and room to disabled people and their carers, such as a changing bench and hoist.
The Leisure Centre are keen to get as many views as possible to make sure it makes the right decision for local people. Anyone interested in coming along can call Optua on 01473 836777 or email [email protected]

Key Vision For Eye Airfield Gets
An Airing The next step in future development of Eye Airfield is available for residents and interested parties to comment on - after the outline of a key vision for the area has been unveiled.
Core Connections, consultants commissioned by Mid Suffolk District Council, has produced a newsletter which outlines the key vision for the partially-developed Second World War airfield.
This vision, and all of the feedback received, will then be used to produce a Development Brief for the area.
This brief will act to ensure there is a structured and co-ordinated approach for future sustainable development - and that it meets the needs of the current and future users and provides employment opportunities for the surrounding rural area.
The culminating vision is one of the key outcomes of a consultation evening, which was held at the Cornwallis Arms in early January. After listening to the views of more than 50 local businesses, residents and councillors, this vision illustrates how Eye Airfield could become a food, energy and waste centre of excellence in the future.
The application for the airfield to become a rural business growth hub - to be known as the Hartismere Enterprise i-Hub - was also supported by the businesses, residents and councillors that attended the January meeting.
Cllr Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Economic prosperity and growth in Mid Suffolk is at the top of our agenda and the development of the Eye Airfield, and its hinterland, is crucial to economic prosperity in the northern area of Mid Suffolk.
“It is absolutely vital that this brings opportunities for young people to enter the workforce, high value jobs and world-class companies.
“This vision document has been drafted after listening to all the views from the public meeting. Any further comments in this consultation stage are vital to securing the optimum development for the airfield.
“I would encourage everyone to have a look at what is being proposed and add in their feedback - this way we will end up with a significant development that we can all be proud of.”
One of the new ideas to emerge was for a ‘Quiet Zone’ for businesses that would be compatible with residential neighbours.
The plans are available on the Mid Suffolk website, http://www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/Business/, under the business section and comments are welcome to help draw up a Development Brief to guide the future development on this 250ha site.

BRINGS REVOLUTIONARY FITNESS CONCEPT TO STOWMARKET AREACOMBS, STOWMARKET (January 9th 2012) – My Private Gym (MPG) has opened the
first of several unique fitness facilities at Combs Tannery, Stowmarket. The concept offers customers use of all the professional equipment of a public fitness club but on an exclusive basis for their own personal training session.
No more waiting for machines, no more busy changing rooms and no more watching other people’s TV while working on a fitness program. It’s as though each MPG member had bought all the equipment, built an extension to house it, and employed someone to clean and maintain it.....for a few hours use a week.
MPG was conceived by Victoria Holt who, as a partner in a family run private swimming pool, has gained extensive experience operating an exclusive fitness facility. “We found that in addition to the obvious advantages of having the facility to yourself, there is an additional motivation in maintaining a fitness regime as the members aren’t tempted to put off going until tomorrow as the hours are set and booked in advanced and so it becomes an enjoyable aspect of a daily or weekly routine.” observed Holt.
The inspiration for MPG came to Holt in early 2011 when she was looking to prepare for her planned adventure of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Holt said: “With no hills available to train on in Norfolk or Suffolk, I needed to do something to simulate the physical challenges associated with climbing Kili……a lifetime ambition of mine. I looked at several facilities, but found public gym membership to be incredibly unappealing for a number of reasons, and so ultimately ended up with an enormous cross trainer dominating the space in my little cottage, where it now remains even after successfully reaching the summit back in December. Not only was this solution expensive, but because I only had one piece of equipment, training became rather dull, I needed variation......and it occurred to me that I probably wasn’t the only one for whom this was a problem. A little research and a lot of talking to many different people suggested that I might be right.......and My Private Gym was born”.
At a time when people are looking for value for money in everything that they do or buy, MPG also offers its members the opportunity of sharing the cost of working out with friends - the monthly fee is for time (hour long sessions) not per user. The fee can therefore be shared between up to four people, so for those who want to visit the gym once or twice a week, it turns out to be highly cost effective solution.

News from Stowmarket Cricket Club.
With the season only weeks away, your local cricket club is ready to offer cricket for all ages and abilities. The senior teams will run on Saturdays ( 1st and 2nd XIs, Two Counties),Sundays ( Hunts Bats League) and Wednesdays (T 20 ); fixtures for U 13 and U 11 are in place. The ‘Chance to Shine’ coaching programme for juniors, with qualifies coaches, will begin at Chilton Fields on Monday 2nd April at 6.15. Senior indoor nets will commence at Ipswich School on 4th March (7-9 p.m.) at Ipswich School.

A Fond FarewellOn 2nd February, Stowmarket Town Council Staff and Councillors gathered at the Regal to bid farewell to Peter Leverington, who had worked as Chief Projectionist at the Theatre since 1991. Peter, aged 67 had also volunteered at the Regal prior to his employment, was given a lifetime Royalty Card, giving him free admission to all future films at the Theatre..
Mayor, Debbie Ball thanked Peter for his long service and wished him happiness in his retirement.
The Regal has recently equipped with a Digital Projector, which allows the screening of 3D Films and enjoyed over 50,000 admissions in 2011.
Self Injury – Cutting
Someone who cuts uses a sharp object to make marks, cuts, or scratches on the body on purpose, enough to break the skin and cause bleeding. People typically cut themselves on their wrists, forearms, thighs, or belly using a sharp implement and some people burn their skin with the end of a cigarette or lighted match.
Most people who self-injure are girls, but boys do it too. It usually starts during the teen years and can continue into adulthood. In some cases, there’s a family history of cutting. Most people who cut hide the marks and if they’re noticed, make up excuses about them. Others don’t try to hide cuts and might even call attention to them.
Cutting often begins as an impulse and people who self-injure report that it provides a sense of relief from deep painful emotions. Because of this, cutting is a behavior that tends to reinforce
itself and can become habit forming. As with other compulsive behaviors, the brain starts to connect a momentary sense of relief from bad feelings with the act of cutting. Whenever the tension builds, the brain craves that relief and drives the person to seek relief again by cutting.
Most of the time, cutting is not a suicide attempt, however people often underestimate the potential to get seriously sick or hurt through bleeding or infections that go along with cutting.
For some, the physical pain of cutting can seem preferable to emotional pain. Emotional pain can feel vague and hard to pinpoint, talk about, or soothe. When they cut, people say there is a sense of control and relief to see and know where the specific pain is coming from and a sense of soothing when it stops. Cutting can symbolize inner pain that might not have been verbalized, acknowledged, or healed. And because it’s self-inflicted, it is pain the person
controls.
Cutting may be linked to, another mental health condition and the person may also be struggling with other compulsive behaviours. For some, depression or
bipolar disorder can contribute to overwhelming moods that may be difficult to regulate and some people struggle with personality traits that attract them to the dangerous excitement of risky behaviour or self-destructive acts.
Cutting is an unhealthy and dangerous way to deal with emotional difficulties and many people want to stop. To stop cutting, a person will need to find new ways to deal with problem situations and learn how to regulate emotions that feel overwhelming. This can take time and may need the help of a mental health professional.

At the time of submitting this copy at the beginning of February we have learnt that whilst it may be cold here, in Cherikov where our children come from it is now minus 30 degrees. Despite these terribly cold temperatures the schools remain open and many children will be walking for up to half an hour each day to go to school. Most children will have a basic mobile phone so their parents (who are generally working from early morning till late evening) can keep in touch but at these temperatures many phones will simply not operate, even diesel which does not freeze turns to sludge making any form of transport difficult to say the least…………
If you have any children who may have a warm winter coat they have grown out of we would be really grateful if you would consider donating them to us, in particular we are short of warm coats for girls aged 6 to 11. In March we will be
returning to Belarus and will take as many of these with us as our baggage will allow.

Also coming up at Needham Community Centre on Friday June 15th is a Psychic Demonstration and Fair evening featuring Dave Summerton, International Psychic Medium and Finalist in Britain’s Psychic Challenge.
Dave will be giving 2 x 50 minute demonstrations together with a
question and answer session. As with the event last year there will be stallholders in offering various products and services for two hours before the main event, and also during the interval.
A good selection of home made refreshments will also be on sale.Tickets at only £5.00 each are available from our Charity Shop or by calling 01449 760343 or 07803 042541. Old Girls Gone in Stowmarket?
A long running Stowmarket Rainbow Unit may close at Easter if no new girls join soon.
At the moment the unit is down to 4 girls and they would just love lots of new girls to come along and
join them so that they can continue having lots of fun.
The two leaders are waiting to help any new members join in the fun, explore all that is on offer as a Rainbow and make lots of new friends.
Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding UK – they are all girls between 5 and 7 years of age.
Their weekly meetings are full of fun and laughter as they follow a programme based on Look – Learn – Laugh – Love.
They enjoy singing, craft activities, exploring the
outdoors, making friends, meeting challenges and of course playing games.
They have a fun, cool red uniform to wear!

Needham Market Football Club have announced that following discussions with goalkeeper Andrew Plummer, agreement by mutual consent has been reached for the cancellation of his playing contract with the club.
The club would like to place on record their thanks to Andrew for his efforts whilst at Needham Market and wish him every success in his future football career
Needham Market Football Club have announced the signing of strikers Lee McGlone and Tommy Smith and both players go straight into the squad for tomorrow’s Ryman League One North clash against Maldon & Tiptree.
Lee McGlone joins the club having been granted a free transfer by Leiston, whilst Tommy Smith who is no stranger to Needham Market FC, having served them for several seasons whilst in the Ridgeons Eastern Counties League, makes a welcome return at a time when the team have found goals difficult to come by in the absence of the injured Sam Newson and departed Jose Espinoza.
Manager Danny Laws commenting on the arrival of the duo said “ I’m delighted to have clinched these two signings both of whom will bring experience and quality to the club. I’m sure that this will serve as a massive boost
to Needham Market Football Club as we look to get our promotion push back on track. It is no secret that things have not gone our way of late and it was important that we looked to address the
shortcomings which were there for all to see “
Needham Market Football Club have also confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Liam Jones (pictured left) and following the departure of Andrew Plummer, the player goes straight into the squad for the Ryman League One North fixture against Soham Town Rangers.
Manager Danny Laws said “ We have made the decision to bring Liam back to the club on a permanent basis based on his previous association with the club, and any doubts that we may have had were cast aside when he stepped into play at the eleventh hour in our game against Maldon & Tiptree last week. His performance was very assured and it seemed a natural fit”
Laws went on to pay tribute to the manner in which Debenham LC Football Club and in particular manager Dale Vince, had contributed to the transfer at such short notice.
The Club welcome Liam Jones back to Bloomfields and wish him a long and happy stay at Needham Market.

Warhorse – Steven Spielberg
Warhorse the film is based on the Children’s book by Michael Morpurgo and the National Theatre’s massive hit of the same name. The Film stars Tom Hiddleston who is currently in the running for the BAFTA’s Orange Wednesdays Rising star Award and in my opinion is the winner for me. Also starring Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Emily Watson and Hollywood unknown Jeremy Irvine from Cambridgeshire.
The film is the Story of Albert Narcott (Irvine) and his connection with his horse Joey. Joey was bought by his father at a high rate due to a bidding war with the landlord of the Farm they own. Joey is a thoroughbred not bred for farming at all, but Albert believes he can do it. His father then sells Joey to Captain Nicholls, a cavalry officer in army (played by Hiddleston) to try and recoup some of the money paid for him to pay the rent on the farm. Albert tries to enlist but is told he is too young but Nicholls promises to take care of him and return him to Joey.
The story goes further than this of course but I don’t want to give anything else away as I felt this was such a special film. I was quite worried about seeing the film before seeing the stage production through concern of spoiling the story and general ambience of the film, but from what I am told the film and stage production are two completely different worlds.
This film is wonderful in my opinion. Beautifully shot, the close up’s of the horses faces when at war are simply breath taking. Just a standard Spielberg hit I think is the best way to describe it. Jeremy Irvine plays Albert so well that you believe this connection between him and the horse is not just a physical one, but spiritually too as is suggested. The dedication Captain Nicholls holds to keeping the memory of Albert with Joey is a touching one and this for me confirms Tom Hiddleston as one of the rising UK Stars. For those that didn’t know he plays Loki in Thor and will reprise the role in the forthcoming Avengers movie.
With six Academy Award Nominations that include Best Picture and Best Cinematography I am quite sure that it will come away with at least a couple of Golden statues, although oddly enough BAFTA have not given Warhorse the Best Picture Nod?
On a side note may I also suggest The Iron Lady. I will say this now, if Meryl Streep does not win Best Actress at the Academy Awards for this role then she will have been well and truly robbed. I came out of the film in awe of this actress (not that I am not normally) but I totally forget that it was Streep playing Thatcher, and not an amalgamation of news reels and family film.
