Editors Corner
It’s funny to be writing this introduction tothe February Quartet so soon - it seems like2019 has only just started rolling and herewe are thinking about the second month inthe year already. A few new events arepopping up in the parishes, but to me it allseems a little quiet while we wait for thebetter weather to appear. Hopefully wewon’t have to wait too long.
Around this time of year the Quartet teamget together for our Annual GeneralMeeting. We discuss how things havebeen going throughout the year, ifadvertising revenue is still covering ourcosts and if we have any new ideas for thecoming year. We do try and implement newideas to keep the magazine fresh from timeto time, and love to have input from allsources to help us keep in touch with whatpeople want.
This year our meeting is in a couple ofweeks at the end of January and we hopeto be able to let you know more about it inthe next issue. If you do have anycomments to make, be it a gripe or a thankyou or a suggestion, you are alwayswelcome to email the team [email protected]. Everycomment helps to keep us in touch withyou, the reader and is of course our mainobjective!
Happy reading.
Anne and Jane

COMMUNITY FIRSTRESPONDERS.CFR’s are trained volunteers who aredispatched by the ambulance service to lifethreatening emergencies in localcommunities. The volunteers normally workwithin a radius of 8 minutes drive from theirlocation but depending on circumstancesthis could be further afield. They cannormally get to a casualty before anambulance can get there, assess thepatient and start possible life savingtreatment immediately. If the situationchanges the CFR can update AmbulanceControl to give them an updatedassessment of the patient.
The Local area is covered by a CFR baglocated in Langham ( the bag was suppliedby Stratford St Mary Parish Council) andalso other bags in Dedham, East Bergholt,Capel St Mary and Manningtree. The bagis presently used by only one volunteer inLangham.
A volunteer can be on call whenever theywant, if you are logged off duty, you do notget called.
At the moment the Stratford St Mary bag isnot utilised as much as it could be and Iwould like to improve this. Ideally I wouldlike some volunteers in the Langham,Stratford St Mary, Boxted and Dedhamareas to complete the training and then joinme in covering our area. The more hourswe have the bag active the better cover wehave for ourselves.
If you are interested in finding out moreabout becoming a CFR please contactme (Peter Dawson) on 07775 667753 andI can let you know more about it.

Stratford St Mary Parish Council -Neighbourhood planning update
At the meeting of the Stratford St Mary ParishCouncil held Monday 12th November, notingthe opinions on this topic expressed byparish residents, it was agreed that theparish should defer any decision as towhether or not to proceed with thedevelopment of a neighbourhooddevelopment plan until the content of theBabergh and Mid-Suffolk District CouncilJoint Local Plan is known.
The most recent information with regard tothe ‘Babergh and Mid Suffolk LocalDevelopment Scheme’ can be accessed at:https://www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/planning/planning-policy/new-joint-local-plan/
However, as Quartet readers may well haveread in the local press recently, thepublication of a draft local plan andsupporting evidence base, followed by aperiod of at least six weeks consultation dueto take place in spring 2019, has now beendeferred for at least four months. Thissituation leaves towns and parishes that donot have neighbourhood development plansin place with increasing vulnerability toopportunistic, windfall development.
The topic of neighbourhood planning willtherefore be included for further discussionat the annual parish meeting scheduled for8th April 2019, with consideration being givento whether or not Stratford St Mary shouldcontinue to defer any decision with regard todevelopment of a neighbourhooddevelopment plan. Review of the outcomewill then be included on the agenda for theregular meeting of the Parish Council, scheduled for May 2019.
In the meantime, parish residents are invitedto contact the council with their questions oropinions on this important topic,[email protected] and
any emerging information will be madeavailable on the neighbourhood planningpage of the Parish Council website,http://stratfordstmary.onesuffolk.net/neighbourhood-plan/
In addition, information on neighbourhoodplanning can be obtained from:https://neighbourhoodplanning.org/

Burglaries in Stratford St Mary
On Wednesday 9th January there were 2properties in the village which hadburglaries during the day, one in Upper Stand the other in Lower St.
If anyone saw anything unusual or anyonebehaving suspiciously which might have abearing on these incidents, pleasetelephone the police on 101.
Without wishing to cause alarm theseunpleasant incidents act as a reminder to usall to maintain vigilance at all times and toensure our home security is as high as itcan be, even to the extent of having aburglar alarm installed if your home doesn'thave one already.
If I can be of assistance in any way, pleaselet me know.

A note for EveryoneJust a reminder for housenames/numbers to be visible. If anemergency vehicle needs to find yourhouse at night, will it find it easily?
Lots of names/numbers are hiddenbehind bushes - it would only take a fewminutes to clear it but those few minutesmight make a huge difference if theemergency vehicle finds your house firsttime.

39th Year
January so far has been kind so on the15th as I write these notes we are halfwaythrough the month. In case you haven’tnoticed the nights are pulling out andalready we have gained about a half hourof extra daylight. It’s been nice and mild(for winter) but long range weatherforecasts suggests a colder second halfof the month with night frosts. Are wefollowing last year’s pattern with the worstweather to come towards February andMarch ?? Remember the snow mid Marchlast year. Before that comes, hope youenjoyed the snowdrops, aconites, hellebores and the very early breddaffodils which have appeared this lastweek so should be in full bloom by the timeyou read this. We will soon be able to hearmore wild bird song as the birds sort outtheir breeding territory before nestingstarts, some as early as February. Bluetits for example are looking in nest boxesand rooks will soon start building nestshigh up in trees. Only a few weeks beforegrass cutting begins once again. Now February is a month of hope andenthusiasm certainly for Daphne & me aswe look forward to the Spring whichshould only be just around the corner andthe dark dreary days of winter fade. Our first meeting starts in the village hallat 7.30pm on 28th Feb with our guestspeaker Fay Jones. Unusual subjectcalled “The Woodland Haberdasher looksat Nettles” and a first for this club.Hopefully the weather will be kind allowinga good turnout of members and guests tostart off this 39th year of your Garden Clubwith refreshments and raffle to finish asusual at all meetings.

Thank you to the many supporters who sentgifts and money for the animals overChristmas, too many to mention but youknow who you are. We also met lots oflovely people and their dogs during theSanta Paws appeal at Pets at Home inColchester.
The other morning I was very surprisedwhen Mother returned from a rescue, looking as black as Ollie the cat!Apparently she had to dislodge a tawny owlfrom a very sooty chimney, after which theyboth needed a bath. One of our volunteerswas later left red faced after commentingupon the delightful soft tones of the rescuedowl. She was most embarrassed whentold the owl was elsewhere and the cooingwas a recovering collared dove!

He worked a self-imposed schedule that never relaxed andin the end he probably brought about hisearly death. But the novels survive, tobe rediscovered by each generation. What sort of man was he? His genius isastonishing and this talk uses biographyand extracts from his books to re-createthe man and his achievements.

Dear Friends,
You will probably be reading this in the first days of February but I am writing this onthe first day of January, the first day of 2019. What a terrifying yet exhilarating thoughtas we face up yet again to normal life after the poignant festivities of Christmas andNew Year’s Eve. Most of you will have spent time with family and friends and caught upwith their news and perhaps had time away from work or other responsibilities that sooften engulf us. Now it’s back to reality – some of us might be dreading that, but forothers it might be a blessed relief to get back to normal life and an ordered existence. Iknow it is for me as after all, that is what life is about, it’s about dealing with everydaychallenges, so the sooner you can get on with them the better, surely.
Well yes it is, but in other ways, it’s good to have spare time on our hands to reflect onour lives, how lucky or blessed we are (or are not) and perhaps how unfortunate someof our fellow human beings might be.
In 2018, along with the other churches in the Benefice, the Holton St Mary PCCsupported several charities. One was FIND (Families in Need) in Ipswich who wesupport every year; some of you will have supported them yourselves in the past soyou know they do wonderful work for the less fortunate in our local society. Anotherone was GLONEVA, a local Ugandan evangelical charity which aims to enrich the livesof young homeless and often parentless children in Kampala through performance ofmusic, dance or other artistic media. GLONEVA is run by a young man called Nicksonwho, in his early twenties, having qualified as a lawyer, gave up his career and hislivelihood to help those far less privileged than himself. My family and I had the goodfortune to meet Nickson and GLONEVA in the summer of 2017 and learn more abouthis work. He is a truly inspirational young man with a pure message and a steelydetermination. He shows that even small things can improve immeasurably the lives ofthose who have very little.
The start of Lent is late this year (6th March) so too early to talk about it in this edition. But before we get to the season of “sackcloth and ashes”, it would be good to thinkpositively about what we can do to enrich our own lives perhaps by helping others.Even by contemplating others less fortunate than ourselves, for a few minutes we aregiving them our undivided attention, so this is a form of prayer which might at somestage turn into positive action, like the donations our churches made or the time wemight spend helping others.
