INTRODUCTION
.
Straw-bale building is a practical and perhaps
under utilized construction method.
Initiated in the United States at the turn of the
century, straw-bale building is showingnew merit in today's market place.
Walls of straw, easily constructed and
structurally sound, promise to take some of thepressure off of limited forest resources

DEFINITION:
Straw bale construction uses baled straw from
wheat, oats, barley, rye, rice and others in
walls covered by earthen or lime stucco (some
use cement stucco, but we typically dont
suggest it). Straw bale are traditionally a waste
product which farmers do not till under the
soil, but do sell as animal bedding orlandscape supply due to their durable nature

CONSTRUCTION
Two basic styles of straw bale construction
have been used.
Post and beam construction with straw bale
infill, and structural straw bale construction or
Nebraska style.

Structural/Load Bearing, or Nebraska Style,
straw bale construction requires that the bales
sit for a short period of time to complete any
settling before stucco is added, or that the
walls be mechanically pre-compressed. If the bales are firm, there will be very little
settling .

the foundation and the top plate
Eight to ten acres can supply sufficient straw tobuild a small house.
The best time to obtain straw is at harvest
time, May through June in central Texas.

Bales may be anchored to each other by stakes of
wood for stability.
Mortar or clay between bales is also used.
Bamboo stakes on both sides of the bales, tied
with wire is used.

They are best used flat for structural purposes.
Plaster will also key into the ends of the
straw when bales are laid flat.
Bales come with two-wires or three-wires.
Two-wire bales weigh about 50 pounds andthree-wire bales, 75-100 pounds

A timber frame
construction can use
bales as infill.
Windows and doorsare typically
accentuated towards
the interior or (less
preferable) exterior of
the opening creating a
deep well.

Poultry netting can be mounted on both sides of
the walls for plastering. Stucco lath is used around windows, doors, and
corners for added strength.
A wood plate or concrete beam(or bond beam)
is placed on the top of the wall.
Trusses or roof framing can be set on this

COST:
This can be one of the most economical wallsystems.
Houses have been constructed for as lowcost per square foot (floor area) for very basicaccomodations to high end homes at well over$100.00 per square foot

ADVANTAGES
This type of construction is economical thancompared to the other materials.
There is no effect to the environment as it is a
natural material. As the appearance of a completed straw bale
structure is similar to a southwestern adobe
style building there is also public acceptence. By this method the burning of straws can be
reduced .

Recently, great awareness is raised through
implementing the legislations of the environmental law
(2004), to avoid the use of mud in making red bricks
especially with the lack of muddy lands.
Alternatively cement and silty bricks are used in
constructing load bearing walls with a cost ranging
between 300-500 EGP/thousand bricks.
The bales will act as a cheap and sustainable materialwhich is more environmental friendly than the bricks in
order to produce low cost housing with local architectural
taste.

CONCLUSION
In USA straw bale construction is used in high
temperature areas but INDIA being a tropical
country why cant we implement this method ?
