Extension as Agriculture Innovation Brokers

Innovation Brokers are intermediary organizations that sit between and connect different agents involved in innovation trajectories in developing countries (Klerx, Hall, Leeuwis)

Many actors can be IBs

• Traditional skills needed – agronomy

– animal science

– natural resource management

– extension methods

• Plus – facilitation skills

– organization skills

– market orientation and skills

– networking skills (value chain, research, agrometeorology, funding, training institutions)

– communication and ICT

• Plus, plus an organization… – willingness to risk, experiment

– ability to learn from experiences – a learning organization
