Today’s Musicians

VALERIE PREBYS ARSENAULT has two favorite musical activities: teaching the violin and playing baroque music. She is the President and Music Director of the Tallahassee Bach Parley, and she maintains a thriving studio of violin and viola students at the core of the Bach Parley String Academy. As Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida State University, she directs the Baroque Ensemble (on period instruments), teaches music history, and has taught violin and directed the Irish Ensemble. She is a member of the Tallahassee Symphony and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. She studied violin at the New England Conservatory (BM), violin pedagogy and baroque violin at the Indiana University School of Music (MM, Early Music), and earned her doctorate from the Florida State University College of Music. At the Bach Parley String Academy, Arsenault uses a synthesis of Suzuki and traditional pedagogy, tailored to suit the strengths and learning styles of each student. Her approach is positive and compassionate, but also demanding, and she enjoys helping her students find creative solutions to technical and musical challenges.

MIRIAM BARFIELD began studying the violin at age six with Melissa Brewer. She received her Bachelor of Music from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Pamela Ryan, and completed a Master of Music in Viola Performance at The Boston Conservatory under Patricia McCarty. She was a state winner for the ASTA National Solo Competition in 2010 (Massachusetts) and in 2008 (Florida) and has performed in master classes for Joseph Silverstein, Robert Spano, James Dunham, and Thomas Dumm. She has been a member of many orchestras, including the Tallahassee Symphony, the Columbus (GA) Symphony, the Albany (GA) Symphony (as principal), the Mobile Symphony, and the Cape Ann Symphony (MA). Miriam has attended the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland, Brevard Music Festival, Schlern International Music Festival in Italy, and the Meadowmount School of Music, where she was a teaching assistant for four summers and performed with violinists Joseph Silverstein and James Ehnes. She teaches violin and viola at the Bach Parley String Academy.

CAROLINE HOLDEN has played with many orchestras across the country, including the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Mississippi Symphony, and the West Michigan Symphony. She currently serves as Assistant Concertmaster of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and is also a member of the Mobile Symphony Orchestra. She performs chamber music as a violinist in the Purple Martin String Quartet, and is a founding member of the Argot Trio with her husband, Dr. Jonathan Holden. Caroline is a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and earned degrees from Hope College in Holland, MI and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She resides in Tallahassee with her husband and two young children. Outside of music, she enjoys gardening and stained-glass projects.

Joe serves as a substitute organist and pianist at various churches in the Tallahassee area (including St. John’s), and enjoys opportunities to perform in ensembles like the Tallahassee Bach Parley.

ANNE LEFTHERIS began taking formal violin lessons at the age of 4 in the studio of Dr. Valerie Arsenault. She began playing viola at the age of 11 and was twice selected as a member of the Florida all-state orchestra. A Chiles High School junior, she is a member of the Key Club, Culinary Club, and National Honor Society. Her hobbies include hiking, acrylic painting, and playing tennis. She aspires to obtain a degree in Accounting and become a business consultant and travel throughout the country.

JOVEY OSAGIE started violin when he was in the middle of his 5th grade year. For 6th and 7th grade, he studied violin by himself and grew more interested music. He even began to compose, learn the bass and play the piano. By 8th grade, he started taking formal lessons with Dr. Valerie Arsenault. He is currently a sophomore at Lawton Chiles High, and has been selected for the Florida All-State Orchestra, and has also played at a music camp at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In his free time, he likes to compose his own music, play soccer, and play the piano. He is also a member of MAO, the Tallahassee Youth Orchestra, the TYO string quartet, and National Honor Society.

MELANIE PUNTER is Associate Professor of Double Bass at Florida State University. As a member of the Juilliard Music Advancement Program faculty, she coached chamber music and bass ensembles and taught double bass. She is a member of New York's prestigious Orchestra of St. Luke's performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and is principal bassist of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. Hayes Middle School, and Bryan Station Middle School. She is currently the Orchestra Director at Raa Middle School, Tallahassee's Magnet school for the Arts.

ANDY SHEN is a relatively normal high school student, who just happens to have played violin for the past 12 years. Andy has been accepted to the Florida All-State Orchestra multiple times, and has also won the Big Bend Young Artists Competition three times. In his spare time when he is not dishing out a Sonata or a Concerto, you are likely to find him reading a book, practicing Chinese martial arts, or most likely sleeping. His plans for the future are largely under construction, but he does plan to be a lawyer of some sort.

ZLATINA STAYKOVA is a native of Bulgaria. She holds a Master of Music and Doctor of Music in Cello Performance from Florida State University where she studied with Lubomir Georgiev, David Bjella, and Gregory Sauer. Ms. Staykova received her Bachelor's degree from the National Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria.
