My “NICK”el’s Worth
By: Fr. Nick Zukowski
MERRY CHRISTMAS!... Our Christmas season continues with today’s observance of the Feast of the Holy Family. There is a Chinese proverb that wisely says, “Nobody’s family can hang out a sign that says, 'Nothing the Matter here!' ” The fact is, even the best of families has at least something “the matter” – it may be arguing or holding a grudge, it may be domestic violence or divorce, it may be unemployment or sickness or a host of other problems that families are faced with. So, if you see a home with the sign that says, “Nothing the Matter here,” you will know that there IS something the matter – someone is in denial!
How can we be a holy domestic family, and a holy parish community? St. Paul reminds us in our Second Reading to work on these qualities: “heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Put up with each other’s frailties as much as we compliment each other's strengths. Love and peace are within our capacity to share. Be thankful. Teach each other about mutual respect for property, for persons, for life. Sing often. Whatever you do, think of doing it for God in the name of the Lord Jesus.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!... This is the year when we will “Unleash the Gospel” in our parish and in our larger community. Since the conclusion of Synod 16, all parishes in the Archdiocese have been charged with bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to our relationships, to our families, to our parish, and to the larger community. Most of us are not familiar with the actual document, the pastoral letter of the Archbishop of Detroit giving us this mandate. My wish is to call together another “parish dialogue” meeting for all our parishioners on four Saturdays during the year, to read, study and integrate Archbishop Allen Vigneron’s pastoral letter on Evangelization and outreach. It all begins with you and me and the Lord. We experience, we accompany, and we witness our relationship with Jesus Christ. Stay tuned for more information!
WELCOME ABOARD… A scrap metal dealer is met by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Wait a second,” says St. Peter. “Very few scrap metal dealers have come this way. I’ve got to check with the Lord first. I’ll be back in a little while.” St. Peter leaves to confer with God in another part of Heaven. When he returns, the Pearly Gates are gone! SPEAKING OF SKILLS… A carpenter goes to confession to say he steals lumber from his place of work. The priest pauses and says, “For your penance, I want you to make a novena.” The carpenter pauses and says, “I’ve never made one before. But if you’ve got the plans, I’ve got the lumber!”
HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON…
AND “SEE YOU IN CHURCH!”

Reflecting on the Word
Three times Joseph listens to his dreams and acts upon them –when the dream advises him to take his family and flee to Egypt; when another dream suggests it is safe to return to Israel; and when still another dream warns him to settle in Nazareth of Galilee instead of the Judea of Archelaus’ rule. All of this follows upon the decision of a much earlier dream, one that advised Joseph not to follow his original plan of divorcing Mary quietly, but rather to take her as his wife into his home. This Joseph, one in the biblical tradition of a much earlier dreamer of the same name, would have given solemn assent to the admonition that it’s good to sleep on one’s problems. Both Josephs did well to listen to their dreams.
Life’s decisions are seldom black and white, such as how to vote, or when to give free rein to a teenager straining to break loose, or when to recognize that a job is no longer energizing but in fact is suffocating one’s very soul. And so we find ourselves wondering what God wants us to do or not do, when to move and when to last it out, when to compromise and when to hold fast. If life then tends to be lived out in shades of gray, mist and fog, how does one recognize the will of God?
Joseph of Nazareth would say, “Pay attention to your dreams.” And maybe your instincts and hunches as well. Oh, they can all be just as gray and foggy as much of life, but nevertheless it’s good to pay attention to them. In fact, more harm may be done by ignoring them than by giving them too much credence.
· Is your style to “discover” God’s will or to ask for and look for signs?
· By what means has God’s will for you shown itself in the past?

A NEW YEAR BLESSING FOR FAMILIES
We bless your name, O Lord for sending your own incarnate Son to become part of a family, so that, as he lived his life, he would experience its worries and its joys.
We ask you, Lord, to protect and watch over this family, so that in the strength of your grace its members may enjoy prosperity, possess the priceless gift of your peace, and, as the Church alive in the home, bear witness in this world to your glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

NOTES FROM YOUR NURSE
“One of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, ‘Teacher, which
commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind.’” (Matthew 22:35-37)
This verse of scripture is pretty clear. Our first priority in life should be to love God. This means make time to spend on our spiritual life, to get to know God and try to live our lives in ways pleasing to Him. Over the last few years, Fr. Nick, on behalf of the parish, has purchased books, as gifts for the congregation, to help us to grow in our spiritual lives. Some of the books have been written by Matthew Kelly. These books are easy to read and full of inspiration. Kelly teaches that there is one fundamental principle of life. God wants us to become the best version of ourselves. He has created us with a purpose and He desires an abundant life for us. In John’s gospel Jesus says, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” We need to determine how we do that with purpose and passion. One thing we can do is step out of the ‘I’m too busy’ mentality. We need to pay attention to what God wants for us. Our souls long for simplicity. Placing God in the center of our lives intentionally slows us down to listen to Him. We can take the focus off of ourselves and our priorities and put it on God’s will for us. Because God wants the best for us, we can trust that we will find ‘Joy in the Lord!’ Our happiness in this life won’t be quenched without God.
In Kelly’s book, The Rhythm of Life, he talks about the “4 Aspects of the Human Person – Physical, Emotional, Intellectual and Spiritual.” He explains: 1. Physical: God gave you your
body, now take care of it. To get more energy and zest, exercise, eat better food and get adequate sleep. Commit to some form of exercise at least once a week, for this year.
2. Emotional: Give priority to relationships. Build healthy relationships by giving carefree
timelessness to someone. Nurture a positive relationship with someone at least once a month.
3. Intellectual: Read a good book for 10 minutes every day. Books change our lives. What we read today walks and talks with us tomorrow. We become the stories we listen to. Read good books that inspire you. Question yourself – am I a better person after reading that book?
4. Spiritual: Enhance your faith in a new and different way this year. Spend more time in silence with Jesus. Pray with the heart and listen for God speaking in your life. It’s in the quiet moments that we can truly hear what God’s will is for us. These things should sound
pretty familiar to you. Parish nursing promotes good health in body, mind and spirit, and you have heard from me many times how important it is to pay attention to our whole selves. Kelly suggests that daily focusing on these things will help us feel more fully alive and acquire a better sense of direction for ourselves.
As we approach the New Year, take a bit of time to step away from the busyness. Ponder if you can incorporate any of the suggestions Matthew Kelly gives to get closer to God and live life more abundantly. I wish you all many blessing and good health in the coming year.
Happy New Year! Renee’
Colds and Flu
With the cold and flu season upon us, we ask you to be mindful of others. If you have a persistent cough or are sneezing frequently it may be better for you and everyone else if you stay at home until you feel better. If you do join us at church, please refrain from shaking hands at the greeting of peace and drinking the Precious Blood from the Cup.
Thank you.

Feast of the Holy Family
First Reading – Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14
· Good parents are a blessing from God. God commands us as good Christian stewards to honor and care for our parents whatever the circumstances may be.
Psalm 128:1-5
· As Christian stewards, we realize our spouse and children are true blessings from God and are to be nurtured.
Second Reading – Colossians 3:12-21
· As God’s chosen ones, we are to put on compassion, reconciliation, and love for one another as members of the Body of Christ.
· A good steward does everything in the name of Jesus, follows His Word, and prays and sings gratefully to God.
· The family is called the domestic Church. Love and respect one another.
Gospel – Luke 2:22-40
· With great joy, Mary and Joseph manifested their gift of faith in Jesus by presenting Him in the Temple, to be thanked and praised by those longing for salvation.
Stewardship Thought Parents who practice good stewardship use their time and talents to pass on their faith, to educate, to nurture, and to protect their children.
GUIDELINES FOR PARISH SICK LIST
Please remember our guidelines for the sick list published in the bulletin. This will be used in attempt to accurately reflect the names of those in our parish who are acutely ill and requesting prayer. The guidelines are as follows:
1. Only a family member or the person requesting prayers may put a name on the sick list. (This is due to privacy issues- there have been complaints in the past from people who were put on the list by well-meaning friends, but the person on the list did not want their name published) Information about the sick person should be reported to the parish office and put on the log kept at the front desk of the parish office. The person requesting prayers will be asked to keep the office informed of the progress of the sick person.
2. A person should be put on the sick list if there is an acute illness. This means that the person is in the hospital for surgery, trauma, illness or he/she has taken a turn for the worse with a chronic illness and it may be life threatening.
3. Names will be put in the church bulletin for one month unless the church is notified that the person is still acutely ill.
4. If the sick person gets better or if he/she passes away during the month of publication, please advise the parish office of this.
5. All elderly persons, persons living in nursing homes and those living with chronic health conditions are included in the general statement at the bottom of the sick list in the church bulletin.
Thank you for your cooperation in this.

It’s Over
Christmas is over for another year. All of the anticipation that we had for the holiday season is over and the decorations and gifts that many of us looked forward to enjoying are put away or are being used. A lot of people feel a little let down when our homes and lives get back to “normal”. It’s a time when we have to face the issues that we could set aside for a little bit during the holiday season. However it’s also a great time to think about confronting some of those issues and seeing what can be done.
Stephen Ministers stand ready to assist anyone who requests their assistance. While they are not therapists, they are members of our parish who have been trained to give care, comfort and empathy to anyone who requests it. No issue is too small. If you want someone to talk to, Stephen Ministers are here for you. Contact Florence Murphy for more information at 586-264-7515. It’s a good time of year to do this.

WARMING CENTER INFORMATION
We will be welcoming the homeless to St. Martin de Porres the week of February 18, 2018. Coming in the next few weeks will be the volunteer sign-up sheet. We look forward to having all of your smiling faces return this year to help us out, and hopefully we will also see some new faces.
Thank you!
Cancelled Stamp Collection
Don’t forget we are still collecting used stamps. Arrangements have been completed with The Sisters of Notre Dame for the collection of used stamps. They advise that all money made from the used stamps will be used via their charities to feed the poor. A very worthy cause as the need is great! As in the past you may place your stamps in the green box located on the shelves just outside of the usher’s room.
Thank you

Printing Mass Intentions in the Bulletin
Please remember that you must schedule your Mass intentions at least 2 weeks before the
anniversary or special intention date
if you want them to appear in the parish bulletin.
If you phone or come in to say that you forgot to do this, we are sorry,
but this two-week advance notification is necessary
because of the bulletin copy submission deadline,
which is ten days before the weekend of bulletin distribution.
Thanks for your cooperation
