The COVID-19 pandemic may have halted any travel to and from Borneo this year, however it did not prevent a strong turnout for the annual Sandakan memorial service on September 8. Visitors from various towns across the south west, joined with the Boyup Brook community to remember the Prisoners of War who were subject to the tragic death marches from Sandakan to Ranau during World War II.

2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of this war and Shire President Cr Richard Walker stated that it is “important that we maintain the connection, despite no travel this year.”

Guest speaker, Alex Hack, told of his family’s connection to the war, in particular his namesake uncle, WX8003 Alexander ‘Sandy’ Hack who was chosen to walk on the first march as one of the strongest and fittest men to carry rice and provisions. Sadly, he was one of the many never to make it to Ranau. Records show that he died on February 4 1945 from beri beri, but as Alex mentioned, “[the records] never said he was tortured or murdered.”

Winner of the 2019 Sandakan scholarship, Brooke Nield, reflected on what it meant not being able to travel to Malaysia this year as planned, speaking about how winning the scholarship meant more than the trip, but still provided the opportunity to continue sharing the story of Sandakan.

Year 10 BBDHS student, Hannah Ivey who was awarded the 2020 scholarship, presented her speech which was emotive and compared how little information was available to loved ones during the war, with today’s instant access to news. She also mentioned the unwillingness of the six survivors of the death marches to share the horrors of their comrades, reasoning why “Sandakan is a story very few are told.”

Joe McLaughlin, son of the instigator of the local memorial Ted McLaughlin, spoke of his father’s dedication to taking care of his army mates with the words “My mates must be remembered” still clear in his mind, hence the establishment of the memorial.

As wreaths were laid, a bugler played the last post and flags were again raised, those present took a moment to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice of the soldiers who never returned. Congratulations to the Boyup Brook RSL Sub-Branch, Lions Club of Boyup Brook, Shire of Boyup Brook, the local schools and community for continuing the legacy and remembering this important tragedy of Australia’s wartime history.

Kaya noonakoort. Wandju to the October Gazette.

Wow - what a busy few weeks we have had here in Boyup Brook, and there is more action to come in October with lots of events on the calendar - just take a look!

The Shire’s Strategic Community Planning process is in full swing and there is still time to have your say - see page 5.

The highly anticipated Containers for Change scheme kicks off on October 1 and all the best to the Lions Club as our local Refund Point at the transfer station. There will also be some other donation points around the community, including the CRC. Make sure you register for your Scheme ID to have the funds transferred directly into your bank account. 10c per eligible container, it’s easy money for you and/or your chosen community group - PLUS you’re helping the environment.

Have you had a chance to go for a wander in our local bush reserves? If not, do yourself a favour and head out to discover some beautiful wildflowers and orchids - they are magnificent.

Due to space limitations, there is unfortunately no ‘Getting to Know’ this month, but rest assured, it will return next edition.

Until next month, stay safe, Jodi

UBAS Schedule Cover Winners

UBAS received 27 entries for the 2020 schedule cover competition. The entries were judged by the committee with some very hard choices, which lead to a tie between entries.

The winner was awarded to Georgia Walker, aged 8 (pictured below left) and the runner-up with a very highly commended was Kulia King, aged 15 (pictured below right) both from the Boyup Brook district.

Georgia’s work will appear on our show schedule cover for 2021. All entries will be displayed in the Whistler Pavilion on show day 2021.

country choice Welcome to the latest Council news items and information on ‘

what’s going on at your shire’!

Strategic Community Plan online survey closes Friday 9th October The Strategic Community Plan (SCP) is the lead document in a framework that provides Council with a clear direction and understanding of the community’s well-being, aspirations, issues, and priorities over the short and long term. During August and September, the community was invited to participate in the planning process by completing a postcard and attending several different face to face community engagement opportunities including: Youth Forums at both schools; informal meetings at the CRC and oval; and, two community workshops. Almost 200 postcards were received and a further 89 community members have now been involved in the Strategic Community Plan consultation. The final phase of the process is an online survey. If you have not yet participated in the process or if you still have something else to contribute, please visit the shire website www.boyupbrook.wa.gov.au or https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DKJW9QY to complete the online survey by Friday 9th October.

The Shire of Boyup Brook is calling on the community to help shape the future of the town through the Strategic Community Plan engagement process.

Shire of Boyup Brook President, Richard Walker, advised that the Strategic Community Plan provides a long-term plan for the Shire, expressing the vision, aspirations and priorities of our community.

The shire has been employing a variety of methods to collect community feedback during August and September. Phase One was a community feedback postcard, mailed out with the Shire newsletter and distributed through businesses in town. Over 200 community members provided information on their short- and long-term priorities.

Phase Two was a variety of face to face community engagement opportunities including student participants ranging from year 5 to year 10 at the Youth Forums at both St Mary’s Primary School and the Boyup Brook District High School. Informal discussions were also held at the Community Resource Centre and sports oval. There were also two public workshops held in the Town Hall, an evening workshop on Wednesday 16 September, followed by a morning workshop on Thursday 17 September.

Consultant Marg. Hemsley said, “We have facilitated these workshops all over the state and it was fantastic to see such a high level of passion and interest in the Boyup Brook community. The commitment shown by the Councillors and the new CEO to listen, consider and respond to their concerns and aspirations was also well demonstrated."

Councillor Walker said that community involvement was essential, and these responses would develop the strategic planning document.

“It was encouraging to see so many people take an interest in the future direction of the shire and the community. There was a diverse mix of people represented including farmers and people in town. Many people travelled a significant distance to attend the workshops and it was great to see people of all ages getting involved in discussions,” he said.

The final phase of the community engagement process is an online survey.

“Although, we have already received an overwhelming response and involvement in the Strategic Community Plan engagement process we want everyone to have the opportunity to have their say. For those who have not yet filled out a postcard, or for any community members who have not been involved in the workshops, there is still the opportunity to participate in the process through the online survey,” Cr. Walker said.

For more information on the Boyup Brook Community Strategic Plan and online survey visit www.boyupbrook.wa.gov.au. The online survey will close Friday 9 October.

Jan (Janice) Johnstone chose Boyup Brook to retire from her Teaching Career.

With her inquiring mind and love of life, she enjoyed many different activities.

One of Jan's interests was in Books. She was well read and generously shared her insight. A whole room in her house was devoted to her Library of Books and Videos. It was wrenching for her to have to relinquish the majority of her books when she relocated to a small unit in Perth.

For all the years Jan lived in Boyup Brook she was a vital member of the Uniting Church congregation, and she lived out her Christian faith in many different ways.

She sang with the Boyup Brook Choristers (BBC) for several years.

Jan was small in stature but she had the biggest heart and she left a big hole in many lives when she moved to Perth about three years ago.

Very dear nieces, nephews, friends and other family members were close by to give her support when her health faltered.

On August 27, Jan passed into the better life awaiting her on the other side of death.

BOYUP BROOK POLICE

James GAUNT Sergeant 9085, Officer in Charge

Boyup Brook Police Station, 9762 1666

Hello again fellow Boyup Brookians,

600 words…. GO.

Was a bit of stuff happening here, right at the end of August, beginning of the month, but all in all has been another good month police-wise.

Now I’ve gotta tell you, I had my easiest ‘drug pinch’ ever, here in Boyup Brook. I wandered into one of the licenced premises on a Saturday night, making sure the good folk of Boyup Brook are getting good value for their tax dollars and one of the punters motioned to me, showing me a bag of green vegetable matter, that up until me walking in, had been sitting in his pocket. Now I checked to make sure that I had in fact got changed out of my pyjamas and into my uniform before leaving home, the fire and Netflix. Yep, I had Blue shirt definitely had three patches that said ‘Police’ - one on each arm and the other on the left front side of my shirt. The said person wasn’t overly happy when I confiscated it, getting themselves an appointment with the local beak and earning an $800 fine and $240 in costs.

We got lucky on another day whilst out on the highways playing in the traffic, Sarah and I were out meeting and greeting people that had no concept of speed regulation and one of the cars we stopped was being driven by what I have described before as one of the ‘Beautiful People’. After a short conversation and subsequent search of the vehicle, someone else attended court and possibly gaol, following the seizure of some white crystal matter and Australian dollars. Charges are: No Drivers Licence; Possess Prohibited Drug with Intent to Sell; Possess Unlawfully Obtained Property and Possess Drug Paraphernalia - that one is still before the courts..

Here’s a funny story, to us here anyway, but probably not to the one we stopped this night. Sarah and I drove past one of the local drinking holes on a Friday night and I spy someone looking out at as, looking like a startled gazelle. Eyes like dinner plates and mouth slightly ajar. ‘Looks like we’ve got a player’, I say to Sarah. We pop inside and say g’day to everyone, got our fluoro vests on, can’t miss us. Yep, po po are working! Don’t drink and drive.

Wander back out to the po po mobile and do another lap going past reeeeeaaaaly slowly. Yep, the gazelle is looking out again. I take our ‘covert’ police van which is really easy to hide with the red and blue flashing lights, big white pod on the back, police stickers and blue and white chequered stickers and park opposite. We’re coiled springs, like a cat waiting pounce on the unsuspecting mouse that thinks he can make the quick dash for the cheese. After about two minutes our game of ‘I Spy’ gets interrupted by our gazelle. Looking around, to the left and right, can’t believe he can’t see us. Into the car and off he trundles.

You could hear the crow like sound emanating from the car when the blue and red lights went on. Long story short, Excess .08%, licence immediately disqualified and a trip to court. Sometimes you just can’t take the stupid out of people.

Now I can’t stress this next bit enough. I won’t use the word ‘quota’ as it sounds dirty, but we do have ‘targets’ that we have to meet and we are under constant pressure from above all the time to meet our ‘targets in relation to ‘Category A offences’.

These include speeding, seatbelts and mobile phone use. In relation to speeding, some of the good folk of Boyup have gotten away with a caution here and there, dependant on detected speeds. Others (who shall remain nameless) were clearly trying to break land speed records and ended up with a blue slip of paper with numbers written on it. Now the three of us try and do the righty by people we stop, and generally scale down the penalty, and it’s something that all three of us here have to do. Use your cruise control people, look at your speedo every now and again, make sure speedo lines up with speed zone. Remember, 110 is the limit. If you have Bluetooth, use it in relation to mobile phones, and remember seeing a police car isn’t a reminder to slip on the seatbelt.

In relation to drink driving, remember, we now have the law here in WA, where, ‘What you blow is what you go’, no more calculating time / alcohol percentage off. And the alcohol level in your blood continues to rise for four hours after your last drink. Something to think about..

On a personal note, Coco has now been rebadged, ‘Hollie’. Felt like she was deliberately ignoring me when I was calling out Coco over and over, only to have her on seven out of ten occasions, look at me then run off in the opposite direction at the speed of sound. So after finishing my “Jack Housewife’ jobs over the weekend and cooking my ‘world famous’ chicken special that will last me for seven days and seven nights, I spitballed, played around with names, and now, seven out of ten times, she comes when I call her. Score.

Keep on living the dream, Boyup Brook is a pretty good place to live.

Extension of Emergency Tenancy laws Who will really be helped with the recent State Government announcement that the Residential Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Act, which was due to end on September 28th 2020 being extended to March 28, 2021.

The decision not only disregards the needs of landlords but will make it much harder for tenants to find rental properties in such a tight market.

We in WA are in a unique position where COVID has not impacted the community as much as we may have considered back in March. We must acknowledge the State Governments actions to keep us safe and the economy as positive as possible.

REIWA having consulted with its members have found that only one percent of tenancies have been unable to meet their full rent payments. Harcourts Bridgetown can certainly confirm this from its rent roll. No tenant wants to see rents rise now, however extending the ban on rent increases could see dramatic rent rises in the future rather than gradual CPI increases. This serves to possibly destabilize the market and keep investors from investing.

We are seeing a shortage of available rental properties and need to encourage investors into the market. For this to occur we need long term market stability.

To be fair the Government should be directing its funding to assist the one percent who may be in rental stress and not place a blanket extension that may in the end not only affect landlords in the short term but tenants in the long term.

St Mary’s Primary School

Another wonderful term has come to a close at St Mary’s. Public speaking was the talk of the school for a few weeks. All students from Kindy to Year 6 prepared an information report in their class and then presented this as a speech to their class. The top of each class went through to the finals which were held in the hall in front of the whole school. Once again this year the standard was excellent. Topics ranged from Climate Change to Coastal Taipans, from the Titanic to the Pacific Garbage Patch. Our judging panel of Robert Maddams, Anne Ritson and Shelley Bates had the trickiest job of the day to pick the winners. Every student that took part deserves great credit for their efforts in researching and presenting.

St Mary’s Public Speaking finals roll of honour: Kindy: 1st place: Lucas Portsmann, 2nd place: Lola Hawkins, 3rd place: Millie Staniforth-Smith. PP/Year 1: 1st place: Aidan Fisher, 2nd place: Luke Kelly, 3rd place: Penny Nield. Year 2/3: 1st place: Lisharn Turner, 2nd place: Ruby Lloyd, 3rd place: William Bagshaw (absent on finals day) Year 4: 1st place: Rachel Corker, 2nd place: Ethan Fisher, 3rd place: Taylor Barnes. Year 5/6: 1st place: Amalia Cailes, 2nd place: Hayley Hester, 3rd place: Sophie Thompson.

A few days later we held our annual Father’s Day Breakfast. Our dads and father figures came to school and enjoyed a bacon and egg breakfast as well as a short assembly.

It was great to see so many of our dads come along to this lovely event.

Year 4, 5 and 6 students were very lucky to get the opportunity to take part in an interschool hockey carnival recently, given the way things have gone this year. Our hockey mom extraordinaire, Tara Reid, coached the students at lunchtimes for a number of weeks leading up to this event and they represented their school well on the day. Thank you Mrs Reid for your ongoing support.

Save the date: Our P&F will once again host a movie night this year. This was such a wonderful event in 2019 that we have decided to make it an annual thing. The movie has not yet been chosen but watch this space. The date is Saturday November 21st 2020. More information will be out in next months Gazette, including the movie choice.

Term 4 will start with a bang for our Year 6 class as their camp, postponed from Term 1, finally gets the go ahead. Students will be staying in Perth from Tuesday to Friday and will get to participate in a range of fun activities, a great way for these wonderful students to start their last term at St Mary’s.

Learn & Grow continues for another few weeks in Term 4 before our Kindy 2021 orientation takes place. Every Monday morning from 8:50am to 9:50am our library is a hive of fun pre school activity. Everyone with pre-school aged children is free to come along.

Better Health Boyup

This month your local pharmacist and I (Liz Parker) have been busy continuing to explore ways to improve the health service provision to the community of Boyup Brook. We are very committed to keeping our community safe and well and living in the place they would most like to be, but we cannot achieve this without your help.

We recently spent a full day in Bunbury, meeting with the Regional Manager of Silver Chain, then the Regional management of WACHS and finally the CEO and other management of Community Home Care (CHC). CHC is the company that has provided the car and begun the transport service which is now underway.

Our sincere thanks to all those volunteers who have been registered as drivers for CHC. It is hoped an area manager (Bridgetown/Boyup Brook) will be appointed by CHC soon, which will help to tailor some of the gaps identified for those in need. Many people have requested the return of a trained nurse to service the community at home. The only way this and other services can occur is if the community can first demonstrate the need. Please get registered with myagedcare, and get your assessments done, so we can continue campaigning for service expansion.

If you need some help around the house or think it’s time to look into aged care homes, then My Aged Care is the starting point on your aged care journey to find and access the government-funded services you need.

STEP ONE: LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARE As you get older, living independently in your own home can become more difficult. If you are finding it harder to do the things you used to, you can ask for some help. Asking for help does not mean losing your independence, getting a little help with your daily activities means you can stay independent in your own home for longer.

What kind of services are available?

Services that keep you well and independent Meals and other food services – Help to ensure you

continue to eat well, for example meal delivery, assistance with food preparation

Personal care services – Help to maintain your personal hygiene and grooming for example, bathing, taking medication, getting in and out of bed.

Nursing care services – At home help to treat and monitor those with medical conditions (not currently available in Boyup Brook, please let us know if you need this service)

Allied health / therapy services – Help to maintain movement and mobility for example, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy

Specialised support services – Help for people with a particular condition for example, poor vision or memory loss

Services that keep you safe in your home Domestic assistance – Help to keep your living space

clean and livable, for example, general house cleaning, clothes washing and ironing, shopping.

Home maintenance services – Help to keep your home and garden in a safe condition, for example, fixing uneven flooring, installing a security light, cleaning the yard of debris

Home modification services – Help to increase or maintain your ability to move around your home, for example, grab rails, ramps, accessible bathroom redesign.

Goods, equipment and assistive technology - Help with mobility, communication, reading and personal care limitations.

Services that allow me to interact with my community Transport services – Help to get you out and about to

appointments and community activities Social support services – Help to remain social and take

part in the community life, for example, in-home social calls, phone and internet communication services, group social activities.

STEP TWO: APPLY FOR AN ASSESSMENT You will need your Medicare number for the application process.

The first stage is to find out if you are eligible for subsidised aged care. This involves a two-part assessment process that understands your needs and what services could help you. It starts with a simple eligibility check (application) which you can do online myagedcare.gov.au or over the phone 1800 200 422,

My Aged Care - A Guide

and then if you are eligible it will be followed by an in-person assessment (RAS or ACAT).

The Boyup Brook Medical Practice and Advocare 1800 655 566 can also assist with this step.

RAS Assessment – A home support assessment with a Regional Assessment Service (RAS). If, from the information you’ve provided in the application, it sounds like you need low-level support to stay independent in your home, the contact centre may recommend a home support assessment with a RAS assessor. This type of support is provided through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP pronounced “CHISP”).

ACAT Assessment – If it sounds like you have care needs that are greater than CHSP can support, a comprehensive assessment with an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessor may be recommended. The types of care an ACAT can assess you for include, Home Care Packages, Short-term care options, Aged care homes.

After your face-to-face assessment, your assessor will make a decision, which will determine if you’re eligible for government funded services, and if so, which ones.

STEP THREE: FIND A PROVIDER THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND ARRANGE YOUR SERVICES There is a search tool on the myagedcare website, alternatively you can contact providers directly to ask what they can provide and the associated costs.

In Boyup Brook we currently have services provided by Community Home Care (CHC), Carealot & Silver Chain. Many other providers exist and may provide services if requested.

The services that providers can provide depends on their funding and staff they have available at the time you ask.

There is usually a waiting period for a Home Care Package which can be more than 12 months.

STEP FOUR: MANAGE MY SERVICES If you are currently receiving aged care services, there may be times when you need to make some changes to them. If you want to make changes to your services, contact your service provider or if your need for assistance has increased contact myagedcare and they will advise you whether you need a reassessment.

This is a very brief overview of the process to accessing support at home (from myagedcare.gov.au).

An Aged Care Community Information Session is planned for Monday 9 November at the Town Hall, with service providers and myagedcare experts, so please write down all your questions and bring them to this session.

Residential Tenancies Act The State Government has extended the emergency period under the Residential Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Act 2020 until 28 March 2021. This means the existing laws, including the moratorium on rent increases and some termination of tenancies will stay until this date. Tenants not suffering hardships cannot take advantage of the crisis to avoid paying rent, and can still be evicted if they are causing damage. I am taking an increasing number of calls from ‘Mum and Dad’ investors who are equally feeling financial hardship. I have written to the Attorney General seeking some balance in addressing the impact of this moratorium.

Stop Puppy Farming Legislation The title of this legislation is very misleading. No-one accepts puppy farming or the mistreatment of animals and on the face of it, this legislation should be adopted. The difficulty is in the detail—and in fact, the legislation does not actually address illegal puppy farming. It details mandatory sterilisation, approval to breed, centralised registration system and transitioning pet shops to adoption centres. Recent media has highlighted how people are tricked into believing they are buying a dog from a registered breeder, but finding it has not been micro-chipped, vaccinated or even the breed they thought they were buying. This legislation needs a lot more work before we can support it in Parliament.

Worker Shortages There is much angst in the regions as our two main South West industries, agriculture and tourism face unprecedented worker shortages due to the COVID-19 fall out. I have called for a Taskforce to be set up with representatives from industry to work with the State Government to explore ideas on how to best navigate this issue. This region needs workers such as truck drivers, cleaners, fruit pickers, café workers, kitchen hands and aged care support staff.

Right now we are all facing the same COVID storm, but we’re doing so in different boats. Please be mindful of those struggling to keep afloat in these times.

Cockatoo Survey Continues

As reported in the September Gazette, more than 150 historical sightings of black cockatoos, including the endangered Carnaby’s cockatoo, have been added to an online survey aimed at understanding the habitat these birds are using across the region.

Prior to this survey, there were only two registered breeding sites for the Carnaby’s cockatoo within the agricultural areas of the South West Catchments Council region. Thanks to the efforts of the local community, a further nine breeding sites have been reported. Local Landcare groups, including the Blackwood Basin Group, will undertake detailed surveys of these nine sites in the breeding season, which is now underway.

Community members are encouraged to continue to contribute sightings to the survey which can be accessed at

https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/7399/ Alternatively sightings can be reported to your local Landcare group.

If black cockatoos are not using particular properties, this information is almost as important as knowing where the birds breed, roost and feed, as it ensures that efforts are not wasted trying to find birds in areas that they don’t regularly use.

The information gathered through this ongoing survey will help to guide on-ground work to improve breeding outcomes, by ensuring that nesting sites have enough hollows for breeding birds as well as having adequate feeding and watering areas within the area surrounding these sites.

Cultural Corner

Kambarang - Season of birth / Second spring: October-November Transformational time of year; Flowers abound

During the Kambarang season, we see an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us. The yellows of many of the Acacias continue to abound, along with some of the Banksias and many other smaller delicate flowering plants including the Kangaroo Paw and Orchids. Also during this time the Balgas will also start to flower, especially if they've been burnt in the past year or closely shaved.

One of the most striking displays of flowers to be seen during this season will be the "Mooja", or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia). The bright orang/yellow flowers serve to signal the heat is on its way.

For the animals, October is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food. It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (Magpies) will also be out protecting their nests and their babies.

Many things are undergoing transformation with the warm change in the weather. Longer dry periods accompany a definite warming trend.

Now's the Time to Get Online

Get Online Week is an international digital inclusion campaign organised by Good Things Foundation. Beginning in the UK in 2007 and introduced to Australia in 2018, Get Online Week is a week-long annual celebration that sees thousands of events take place each year giving everyone the chance to find the support they need to improve their digital skills.

This year's Get Online Week campaign will take place from 19 - 25 October 2020.

If the last few months have taught us anything, it is how vital digital skills are to our wellbeing and safety. Yet 2.5 million people in Australia are not online.

This year's campaign will respond to the needs of our communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. People will be supported to connect with friends and family, stay safe online, learn how to better use their devices, find reliable health information and apply for work online.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to safely participate in the digital world and no one should be left behind. Through the Be Connected Network in Australia, events and activities will take place in hundreds of communities to spread the Get Online Week message.

The Boyup Brook CRC will be hosting events to help community members gain confidence to use technology and the internet and find out why ‘now’s the time to get online’.

Museum News

Not a lot has happened at the museum except for some pruning and a clean-up of leaves during a busy bee.

We have welcomed Brian Luckhurst back at our last meeting. He has been very ill but is recovering well. Also thank you to Brian for items for a raffle, when we are allowed to have one, and for donating a portrait of Miss Alice Fuller (his Aunt) done by Sandy Chambers. Miss Fuller was part of the history of Boyup Brook where she ran a boarding house and shop near the Anglican Church.

Our next committee meeting will be on Wednesday October 14, at 2:30pm. Happy days to all from us at the museum.

Garden Club went on a different kind of adventure on Tuesday 8 September, travelling to Val and Brad Anderson’s spacious garden and Val’s Tin Shed at Lowden.

On arrival, we were guided into Val’s Tin Shed where she has over 7,500 tins of different shapes and sizes, no two tins being the same. For many of us, the tins evoked fond or emotional memories of times gone by.

If only those tins could talk, there would be tales of love, decadence, hardships, rationing and celebration. It was amazing to see such a wonderful collection of gorgeous chocolate, lolly and toffee tins plus many, many more shapes and sizes of old beautiful tins from bygone days.

After quite a while of jaw dropping wonder, we enjoyed afternoon tea on the veranda of the shed in the warm sun. Then Val invited us into her expansive garden, where bears sit in swings and hide under trees, before being shown into our hosts’ lovely home to see her teapots, tea cups and saucers collection, evoking more memories and laughter. Val’s Tin Shed is open by appointment by phoning 9732 1256.

Our next garden club on Tuesday 13 October we will visit a garden in Bridgetown.

There will be a car pool leaving from the Boyup Brook Town Hall carpark at 1pm. Please bring along your cup and a chair to enjoy afternoon tea together.

If you are a gardener or just enjoy looking at gardens you are most welcome to join us, second Tuesday of each month.

All enquiries please contact Yvonne Hales on 0427 772 718 or Margaret Nield on 9765 1192.

Boyup Brook Tourism Association Inc

Proudly sponsored by the Shire of Boyup Brook.

What’s new? Thank you for visiting us!

Our volunteers have been run off their feet the past few months due to the incredible amount of community support we have

received. Since reopening our doors in June, we have had more visitors per month than last year, which is amazing given our state

and international borders are still closed. We are beyond grateful for the support we have seen from the Boyup Brook community. By

coming in and buying from our range of local artisan goods, you are not only helping us keep our doors open, but you are also

contributing to dozens of local individuals and small businesses that sell their items in the Visitor Centre. We hope to see you again in

the Visitor Centre very soon!

Registrations open for wildflower tour As part of our Blooming Wild Weekend, a wildflower tour led by botanist, Erica Shedley, will be taking place on Saturday 10 October 2020. Departing by bus at 11:30am from the Railway Station the tour will take patrons to the best wildflower spots in town, along with a scrumptious lunch. Cost: $20 including lunch and bus, or $10 for lunch only. To book your place, please email [email protected] or phone 9765 1444.

Visit our Butterflies and Beetles Collection during the school holidays We never get sick of seeing the look of awe on our visitors faces as they view the Carnaby Collection of Beetles and Butterflies. Children are particularly impressed by the massive size of some of the beetles and butterflies, in fact we have one little visitor who comes in every few weeks to check on her favourite bright blue butterfly.

We’ve housed the collection since 1979, so if it has been a while since you’ve taken a look, head on over during the school holidays with your children or grandchildren, we guarantee you they will be impressed!

Volunteer with us! Can you find a few hours to spare each month? If so we would be delighted to hear from you as we are actively looking for more volunteers to assist with the running of the Visitor Centre. Our volunteers thoroughly enjoy getting to share their local knowledge with visitors from all across the state, and love the sense of community gained by volunteering their time to promote Boyup Brook.

If you are interested please phone 9765 1444 or email: [email protected].

We want to sell your products! The Visitor Centre has the largest range of local artisan products for sale. We are always looking for more items to add to our vast range of products. Whether you make hand knitted socks, delicious gourmet relishes, woodwork, artwork, or anything along those lines please get in contact with us to discuss selling your items here!

Be Still and Know….. God

Two-thirds of your adult life will be spent earning a living, and God wants you to enjoy it: ‘To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.’

Try to realise that God has a purpose for your being where you are. ‘The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.’ (Psalm 37:23) When you understand that, you begin to rejoice on the job rather than resent it, and believe that God has a plan for your future.

It may be a different job, a promotion in your present job, or improving your skill set, which will result in your feeling fulfilled, knowing you are a valued and contributing team member.

So with one eye on the present and another on the future, your goal should be to perform your responsibilities with efficiency and professionalism, and glorify the One whose name you carry.

Learn all you can from your current position—both in skill-building and in character-building. Prepare yourself for what God has in mind.

So what if others overlook or undervalue you? David’s family didn’t think he was qualified to be Israel’s next king, but God had a different opinion. He also had the last word.

There’s an important lesson here for you. Be faithful and seek to excel where God has placed you, and when the time is right He will bless you and promote you—but it may not be in the way you expect. ‘It is God alone who judges; He decides who will rise and who will fall.’ (Psalm 75:7)

If I am speaking to others, then you should simply discern prayerfully which part of these words are for you. Ponder my words. Ask for light from the Holy Spirit. Ask for protection from the Creator who desires what is good for you.

My friends, and you are all my beloved friends, move gently through your days, neither detaching from your role on Earth nor remaining too attached to temporary matters that will pass away. Remember that love and loving connections of light will remain with you for eternity.

Speak with confidence about my plan for this world, especially when you are offered that which feels empty of hope. I am light. I am peace. I am happiness and joy and love. I am hope and delight.

You, my beloved, fill me with hope and delight, just as you are right now. Only I have the eyes to fully recognise what is beautiful and heavenly in you. I look at you and see an infinite ability to spread peace through your trust in me.

You cannot see this because you cannot see the effect of even one action of love from you to another. Only I can see the effects that blow into the world though the trust that you offer to me. Come. Let us, together, introduce many origins of love which can then move out into the world. Today, we will spread hope, together.

Direction for Our Times Submitted by Anne Staniforth-Smith

May 17, 2020

Jesus I am speaking to you today to share the gift of heavenly perspective. Perhaps you wonder if Heaven is attached to the difficulties in the world. The answer is yes. Heaven is very much attached to the struggles faced by God’s children in the world. We are one family, after all, and that which affects one, affects all. The saints in Heaven, those who have gone before you, feel deeply for your suffering.

They feel deeply because so few of the people facing this time are confident about my presence and about their next life. And there is a next life. There is a next life here with me, Jesus Christ, who loves you most completely. My friends, there are many things to remember that will console you. One, nobody has more power than God. The Father retains complete dominion over the world he created. The Holy Spirit blows gently at times and at times more powerfully, but the Holy Spirit remains present to those who are disposed.

What must one do to be disposed to the Holy Spirit? One must be open to one’s condition as a child of God, a created being.

A created being does not create what is good without God, regardless of one’s beliefs about God. A created being does not create and use that which is bad for people with God, regardless of one’s beliefs about God. Therefore, let it be said that when a person wilfully creates something which is used to hurt humanity, they do so without God and they are acting separately from God.

Why do I speak with you this way today? Because you must quietly discern all that moves around you. Ask yourself this question. Is the remedy being offered to people helping humanity or hurting humanity? If it is helping humanity, then you know I am active. If it is hurting humanity, then you know that it is not what I desire for people.

Because you cannot possibly judge any person, you leave all judgement to me. The truth is that sometimes people believe they serve to help others when really, they spread harm. I do not want this. I want all of God’s children on Earth to be loved and assisted. At the very least, I ask that God’s children not be deliberately harmed. If I am speaking to you, then you should heed my words, which you have now been given.

Boyup Brook Clay Target Club AFGRI 100 Skeet A cold, wet, blustery day greeted the sixteen shooters that turned up at the Boyup Brook Clay Target Club on Sunday the 20th of September to compete for the coveted John Deere tractor. The targets were extremely challenging with the wind making them duck and dive all over the place. At the finish, Laurie (Banjo) Paterson from Collie Club came in with an 87/100 to win the tractor.

Other Winners on the day were: -

1st 2nd A: Stix Davis 84/100 B: Tom Starkey 86/100 Ian Porter 78 /100 C: Grant Robertson 79/100 Stu Uren 77/100

Mel Fisher and Steve Sloan were only two points behind Stu with 75/100 for equal 3rd in C grade.

Thanks go to AFGRI for their continued support of this shoot which has some shooters travelling long distances in an endeavor to win the model tractor.

The next Boyup Brook Clay Target Club shoot is the Phil and Jenny House 100DB to be held on October 11th commencing at 10am. All Welcome.

Junior Hockey

What a fabulous end to our shortened season. Congratulations to the Crocodiles for a tightly fought win over the Sharks in the Grand Final 4-3 and well done to Jade Reid for winning the Helen Robertson medal for best player in the Grand Final.

Thanks must go to our fantastic coaches for the effort and commitment they put into their teams; Janis Beadle and Sarah Thompson (Crocodiles), Dave Fortune and Nick Bagshaw (Sharks), Jodi and Craig Nield (Hornets) and Phil Corker and John Ritson (Redbacks). Big thanks also to our umpires Tara Reid, Darren Guazzelli, Fleur Mead, Simon Purse and also our coaches that umpired Janis and Nick. Thanks also to Nicky Purse for your excellent work in keeping track of our weekly scores. To our parents that helped out with time keeping, cleaning and toastie making, thank you very much.

Finally, thank you to all our families who supported our altered hockey season this year. It was wonderful to see nearly sixty kids playing each Saturday morning.

Here’s to a fabulous 2021 season. Emma Fortune

It’s been a huge month out at the Golf Club. We have completed our Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships and held our Ladies’ Open Day.

Michael Wallace and Ian Tweedie played off for Men’s Champion. During their match, Michael had a hole in one on No. 6. Questions were raised, as it was Wal who shifted the pins the day before, but was deemed above board. Michael went on to win the Championship 8 and 6. In the B grade, it was Rance Dorrington who got the upper hand over Brad Fairbrass 4 and 2. The C grade was a close tussle between Jock Aird and Peter Sanderson and it was the wily Scotsman who drained a long putt on the last to win 1up.

The battle for the Ladies’ Championship was played out between Rhonda Parker and Jann Mead. It was Jann who played the better golf to claim another championship 6 and 5. Wendy Tuckett and Sheri Sanderson played off for the Ladies B grade, with Sheri sneaking over the line to win 1up.

Friday September 18 was the Ladies’ Open Day, this year’s theme being “The Claytons Olympics” sponsored by Boyup Brook IGA and South West Riverstones. With 85 women nominating to play from sixteen clubs, it was always going to be a big day. Before any golf was played, the ladies competed in an array of Olympic events: Toilet Roll toss, Boot Ball and Spooning golf were all fiercely contested and the winners stood proudly on the Olympic podium to be presented their medals. As with all Olympics, there were a number of positive drug tests, but none of them were deemed performance enhancing.

At 10 o’clock, the ladies headed out to contest the 18 hole stableford event. It was Boyup local Lyn Jennings, who played the game of her life to win the day with 42pts. Second was Angie Houkamau from Boyup Brook with 39pts.

Before the end of the day, the crowd was treated to a synchronised swimming event by Jann and Rhonda. The girls demonstrated dexterity that would have made younger women envious. They completed their routine with what could only be described as ‘a visual spectacular’. The judges however, were less than impressed sighting a number of major technical violations. The fact the girls were laying on a table with a blue curtain to represent water were enough to unfortunately tip them out of medal contention.

Thankyou to all the Boyup Brook Golf Club members and helpers who contributed their time and effort to these events to make them such a success.
