Finding God The splendid Magi, all sparkle and dash and so-

lemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew’s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these Magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the King of the World that stretches to the Magi ’s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us.

We too see and understand anew. Like the Magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the Magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route.

We are asked to come away from this festive sea-son ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts.

Thank You For Your Dedication We would like to thank all our generous parish-

ioners who cleaned, prepared and decorated the church and church grounds for our celebration of Christmas. The Church looked so beautiful. We also thank the parishioners who set up the outdoor Nativ-ity scene and the indoor crèche. In addition, our heartfelt appreciation goes to the lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and ushers. We also want to extend a special thank-you to those cantors and mu-sicians who add so much to the Mass. The beauty and splendor of our Christmas Masses would not be the same without your dedication. We ask God’s blessings upon each of you during 2019.

Offertory Giving Online Giving Becomes An Act Of Faith

If we truly believe, as the New Testament states that “all good giving and every perfect gift” is given to us by our Creator (James 1:17), then everything we have in life—our job, our life and our bank account is all from God. When we give to our church or to people in need, we are not giving “our money,” we are giving back to God what is His to begin with. Giving then becomes an act of faith because we be-lieve that God will provide for all of our needs. Re-curring giving becomes a continual act of faith and worship. All giving draws us closer to God and helps align our hearts to the idea that He is in control of all things and everything is in His hands.

2018 Church Donations Tax Statement Will you need a statement of 2018 contributions

to the church for income tax purposes? If so, please call the Church Office at 863-7935 and request yours. Since not everyone has a need for a statement, we do not automatically mail one. The exception would be those who issued a check in an amount $250.00 or over, as we are mandated by the IRS to issue a statement in those cases. Those who call will have their names put on a list, and a statement pre-pared as soon as possible after the new year. Our bookkeeper hopes to have these ready for mailing or pick-up (please state your choice) by the end of Jan-uary. *Please Note: To be included on 2018 contri-bution statements, all contributions to the church must be DATED and RECEIVED no later than this weekend, December 30, 2018.

This is important in order to comply with IRS regulations, as the Church Office will be closed De-cember 31 and January 1.

Epiphany Of The Lord Today we celebrate that the child

born in the darkness of night in a low-ly manger is revealed as the manifes-tation (the meaning of epiphany) of God. Christ is revealed as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. All of these manifestations are “lights” that shine on Christ revealing a deeper un-derstanding of who He is. All today’s readings re-veal a different manifestation of who Christ is for all who believe. Traditionally, three events in the life of Christ are remembered today as manifestations of God’s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast of Cana, and the bap-tism of Jesus in the Jordan River. Lights have played an important role in today’s solemnity.

“For Such A Time As This” Please join us for the Women’s Retreat “For

Such A Time As This” to be held January 25-27, at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Lafayette. Msgr. David Toups as well as Deacon Larry and Andi Oney will be the featured guests. Registration closes at noon on January 21. For registration forms and costs, visit www.ccrno.org

Treasures From Our Tradition Monday of this week is Christmas

Day in Russia and in much of the Or-thodox world. This curious difference in schedule has much to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In 45 B.C. Julius Caesar gave the empire his Jul-ian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called “ pontiffs” were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named The Last Year of Confusion. The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day eve-ry 130 years.

Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. Eng-land held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian cal-endar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thir-teen days apart, which accounts for Russia's Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! James Field

Epiphany Of The Lord—January 6 In our celebration of

the Epiphany, two inter-woven themes are present in the readings today. God is beginning something new, and God gathers all of humanity to participate. For Isaiah, God's bright light, manifested in the people of Israel, attracts and summons people from many nations to Jerusa-lem. In the letter to the Ephesians, God's grace makes the Gentiles co-heirs and co-partners in the gospel. Matthew tells the story of the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel through the birth of Jesus, and simultaneously lead-ing foreigners to share in these same promises. With the birth of Jesus, God chose a particular people, in a particular time and place, to enter most directly into the human story. Today's readings teach that God did this in order to gather all people, all cultures, into unity with God. Like the Magi, we are drawn into a journey toward God, becoming co-partners in God's work.

St. Raymond of Penyafort—Jan 7 Raymond was born in 1175,

at the castle of Penyafort in Catalonia of a noble family. St. Raymond was allied to the King of Aragon. Aragon. At the age of twenty, he taught philos-ophy at Barcelona. St. Ray-mond traveled far and wide to convert nonbelievers, change the hearts of heretics, and in-fuse the great universities of Europe with solid theological instruction, resulting in a pres-ence of the Dominicans at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Recognized as a visionary leader, St. Raymond was elected third master general of the Dominican order, following in the footsteps of Blessed Jordan of Saxony. His spiritual aptitude and theological literacy reached beyond the walls of the Dominicans to other areas: he served as spiritual di-

rector to the pope, archbishop of Tarragona, and compiler and reviser of Church laws “Five Decre-tals.” (canon law).

He was elected general of the Dominican Order to succeed Jordan of Saxon. He died in 1275, at one hundred years of age.

Journey Of Transformation Tradition, poetry and literature have long reflect-

ed upon the story of the Magi. The journey of the Magi indeed resonates with journeys in our own lives. The journey is a search for a king, for what or who is of primary importance in life. The seekers lose direction and encounter obstacles and dangers. Searching for a king, the Magi first come upon a false king, Herod. The reappearance of the star shows them the true path and leads to the true king.

For Matthew, the journey culminates in the Magi's worship of Jesus. They discover a king not clothed in grandeur, but wrapped in humility and simplicity. They begin to re-imagine what true royal power really is. Transformed by the journey, they embrace the humble king, Jesus.

Insiders And Outsiders An epiphany is a manifestation, a revelation of

what was hidden, and often a challenge to change. For Matthew's community, the story of the Magi challenged these new Christians, from both Jewish and Gentile origin. The insiders, those rooted in the Jewish scriptures and traditions, might be uncom-fortable with the Magi, and with God working within Gentile culture to draw them toward God. The out-siders, the Gentiles, would rejoice that God calls them from within their own roots. But they knew that they too were called to their own journey of transformation.

Who are insiders and outsiders today? Some might see strangers as threats to accustomed ways of honoring and serving God. Others might believe that they themselves are too distant, concluding that they cannot be accepted in Christian community, and per-haps tune out God's activity in their lives. Still others might think that belief in Christ serves as another dividing line between people, preventing them from seeing all persons as God's children. The story of the Epiphany reminds us that classifying insiders and outsiders is an illusion, a falsehood arising from a separation from God. When we are united with God, we can only see others as sisters and brothers.
