From the Principal’s Desk

DEAR PARENTS & FRIENDS

It is nice after another term at Rathkeale to look back. After two terms, I obviously feel a little bit more comfortable about the surroundings and the students at Rathkeale and Senior College.

The House Music Competition was a spectacular way to finish off the term and send everyone away with songs and tunes in their heads for the holidays. The talent, skill and competitive nature of the boys really came to the fore. A little bit of friendly banter was also present along with generous acknowledgement from the boys across houses when they witnessed an outstanding performance. I have already written to parents apologizing for the frustrations that occurred from us being overwhelmed with numbers wishing to view the competition on the last night of the term. In fairness to boys and parents, this will require a re-think of how we host the House Music Competition and further details will be decided next term in preparation for next year.

I have read a number of reports from the senior school and read and made comments on all the Year 13’s last report from Rathkeale College. Despite the full-on program that many boys have both inside and outside the classroom, achievement remains at high levels. This is a credit to the skills the boys have learnt and is backed up by a bit of resilience and good time management.

I enjoyed watching the conclusion to many of our sports teams’ seasons. Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered and supported our teams, especially the parents who travelled away to national events and tournaments.

I have noticed already the vast array of certificates, awards, cups & trophies that are given out at assemblies. There is such a high level of achievement that we cannot miss an assembly, otherwise there instantly becomes a backlog. These are for many different and diverse reasons across academia, sport and the performing arts. It illustrates the wide range of talents that the boys have and the willingness of the staff to encourage and promote the boys forward into so many different aspects of secondary school competition.

One of major highlights this term has to be the performance of Viva Camerata at the Big Sing Grand Finale. It doesn’t get bigger than that for choral singing and this year’s group have set the highest benchmark for others to aspire to in the future. Congratulations to all the students and staff involved.

STAFF MATTERS

We farewell Georgia Wallace this term. Georgia had replaced Lucy Hepburn, HOD Music, during her maternity leave period. Georgia was enthusiastic and filled in admirably for Lucy. We wish her all the best as she moves to a role at Makoura College next term.

LOOKING AHEAD

After a well-earned break the senior boys go straight into Derived Grade Examinations and then the final NCEA Examinations. For juniors they have their Final Examinations for the year and then a wide range of outdoor education activities to look forward to. Finally, to conclude the year we set about celebrating everything that has been good about Rathkeale College with an important series of prizegivings and functions.

Looking forward to a great Term Four with the boys.

School Community BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Board of Trustee student representative elections have just been completed and the Board congratulates Liam Quirke, Year 10, on his appointment as Student Representative for the next 12 months. We look forward to his input and ideas. I also thank the two other boys who put their names forward, and took the time and effort to present themselves at assembly and generally create an awareness of what they had to offer. Their interests in serving for the betterment of the school are to be applauded. Alex Baker, the outgoing student representative, has done a fantastic job in reporting a student perspective on relevant matters and assuring the Board that the school is in good heart. The board thanks Alex for his commitment and for the manner in which he has engaged in such a positive way. I am sure the insight he has gained will serve him well in the future.

FRIENDS OF RATHKEALE

Planning is well underway for the annual Christmas Fete on Saturday November 10th. The Fete Raffle has been released, and hopefully your boys have been busy selling tickets. At $10 for a book of 6, or $2 a ticket - this is a remarkably good price for a wonderful prize pool. Massive thanks to all the families that have donated prizes and money – and especially to Eve and Travis from THE SCREENING ROOM for yet again providing our first prize – a year’s free movie passes for two, plus a $50 monthly meal voucher. Should make selling tickets pretty easy! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the office if you can sell more tickets......

We would love you to let us know if you can help out in ANY way for the fete – particularly with your time for a couple of hours on the day. We also need lots of baking, used clothes, books, flowers etc., but will be detailing this closer to the time.

If you are able to help us out, or interested in joining our friendly group, please get in touch. This is a great way to get involved with the school on a practical level and meet like-minded parents.

Rachel Callaghan (Secretary)

[email protected]

All Fete proceeds this year will add to the Friends Assn goal of raising $200,000 towards the Sport HQ to be built at the College. We appreciate the community’s ongoing support.

Around the Departments BIOLOGY

FIJIAN EXPEDITION

After our first highly successful Biology trip to Fiji in 2018 with Mr Clausen, 12 Level 2 Biology students have been selected for another trip in 2019. They will return to Fiji to follow up on the data collection and research undertaken by the previous group and the research scientists from this year. They will continue with the ecological research to benefit the development of a national park on the Natewa Peninsula.

SPEECH COMPETITION

The Wairarapa Speech Competition was held at Chanel College this year, with entries from all over the region. Our students spoke very well and we were delighted to have a place winner at each level of the competition.

Winners of the Wairarapa Speech Competition representing Rathkeale and the Senior College were:

Year 9 – Struan Mitchell (1st place)

Year 10 – Logan Purvis (2nd place)

Senior – Aanirudh Kheterpal (3rd place)

ESSAY COMPETITION

WRITE THAT ESSAY SENTENCE COMPETITION

This term, students and teachers alike have tried to incorporate a Sentence of the Week into classroom writing. While we had many innovative and entertaining sentences submitted, the prize for the most outstanding effort in this goes to Ms Evans and her Year 13 Biology and Year 10 Science classes. They were consistent in sending through entries every week, and had a fair number of weekly winners among their entries. There is an important message here: good writing is not the sole preserve of English classes. Most subjects require good literacy to achieve at the higher levels. When we can communicate our ideas clearly, precisely and fluently, we are move likely to achieve with Merit and Excellence. We hope students will continue to use the different sentence types in their written work. We’ll be back in Term One next year with a new Sentence of the Week competition and some new challenges and innovations.

Term 3 Sporting Review Term 3 started off with a hiss and a roar as rugby, football and hockey finals were approaching, tournament week was in sight and inter-house cross country/winter sport was deeming pivotal for house competition points!

LOCAL COMPETITIONS

These were again well represented by Rathkeale throughout the winter season. In the WBSS U15 Rugby competition – both the Junior Green and Junior White teams made it through to the final held at Memorial Park. The Whites won the previous encounter earlier in the season with a comfortable victory. However, that counted for nothing in the winner takes all finale. The Greens were the eventual winners in the final, a match that went right down to the wire, winning 22-15 – a great show for Rathkeale rugby going forward!

Junior Red Football were the best performing football team in 2018. Only dropping one game all season – they went into their final against Chanel as firm favorites. Several lightning saves from goalkeeper Parekura Pepere wasn’t enough to see them through, unfortunately, going down 1-4 to Chanel Development.

Page 8: Student Achievement - Rathkeale College · A L Scott Football T J E Wagner Football M A Allingham Hockey A C D Baker Hockey ... Alexander McKenna (3), Thomas Parker (3), Craig Bebbington

The top college hockey grade was dominated by Rathkeale teams this season with the 2nd XI, Rams and Senior College teams making up 3 of the top 4 teams. The 2nd XI did one better making it through to the final against an unbeaten Kuranui 1st XI. The game started terribly for the 2nd XI going down 0-4 early on. However, the young side showed a lot of character nudging the game back to 3-4 with four minutes to go – which meant for a tense last couple of minutes. Unfortunately, time was against them eventually going down 3-4, but they showed what talented players we have moving forward into the 2019 season. And finally, both the Rathkeale Thunder and A Basketball teams finished their seasons on a high note. They finished 3rd and 5th respectably. It was the first time Rathkeale has managed 2 teams in the local competition, and a big thank you must go to Oliver Donaldson and Harry Du for all of their hard work throughout the season!

Inter-House Cross Country was a fantastic afternoon spent on The Oval. With the newly marked course, glorious weather and 30-metre sprint-offs at the start of each race – it made for an interesting afternoon. Hillary house were the best overall house, with Halberg in 2nd and Blake in 3rd. A big thank you to the staff of who marshalled the event!.

TOURNAMENT WEEK

Tournament week was a rather wet and muddy experience for our teams heading away to their respective venues around the country. It was the ideal time to be playing hockey, graciously able to escape the mud! 1st XI Hockey finished 28th place in NZ winning the two games throughout the week against some tough opposition, in an especially tough pool. 1st XI Football proved that they have got huge potential in the years to come making it through

Page 9: Student Achievement - Rathkeale College · A L Scott Football T J E Wagner Football M A Allingham Hockey A C D Baker Hockey ... Alexander McKenna (3), Thomas Parker (3), Craig Bebbington

to the Rex Dawkins Final in Napier. They played Whangarei Boys in the final, but went down 0-1 gaining 2nd place out of 24 teams. Colts Rugby had a successful 3 days away in Hastings. Battling through tough conditions to the final where they played St Peter’s Cambridge, eventually losing 5-33. And finally our top two Croquet teams finished off the week playing in the biggest secondary school Croquet competition in the world. Jake and Ollie Hewitt finished in a respectable 10th and Oliver Donaldson and Daniel Beveridge in 18th out of 36 teams.

WINTER HOUSE SPORT

Winter House Sport was up next and Football, Hockey and Rugby were all up for grabs. In what was labelled the highest standard of winter house sport in recent times, hockey was played down at Clareville with both turfs allowing more players more players to get involved. Hillary ran out eventual winners in the Junior and Senior competitions. Football was hotly contested and was a very balanced affair, Halberg ultimate winners by just one single point, grabbing a couple of crucial draws at important times. Rugby was dominated by Hillary and Halberg, and just who won this would determine the overall Winter House Sport champion. On this occasion it was Hillary who didn’t lose a game all day, and they were declared overall winners. A huge credit must go to student house leaders who really embraced the event, and reminded us how important the house competition is!

AROUND THE TRAPS

There is always a lot going on with Rathkeale students. None more so than the Clay Target Shooters who have had a busy term competing in several competitions around the lower North Island. Recently they had the final shoot of the circuit in Woodville. Henry Borthwick finished well and was rewarded with ‘High Over All’ Junior of the day, and 14th overall in the series. Hunter Jacobson finished in 3rd overall in the Skeet series. Eddie Harris was in a shoot off for the single rise, however had no luck. And Jock Bourke received the ‘Most Improved Award’ over the series (pictured). These boys, as well as Mitchell Woodhouse and George Speedy, now head to Christchurch for the Secondary Schools Nationals competition, we wish them the best of luck.

Ryan Irving competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Swimming competition in September. This is a huge achievement to qualify for a National Event. Ryan went on to achieve a couple of PB’s and has reached qualifying times for divisionals which are coming up. Well done Ryan.

Sam Blundell, Callum Griffith and William Giltrap-Daly travelled to the NISS Motocross event in Wanganui. All riding in different categories, Sam Blundell finished in 6th place, and Callum Griffith in 11th in the 125cc 15-17yr olds event. William Giltrap Daly finished 22nd in the

Page 10: Student Achievement - Rathkeale College · A L Scott Football T J E Wagner Football M A Allingham Hockey A C D Baker Hockey ... Alexander McKenna (3), Thomas Parker (3), Craig Bebbington

250cc event. These boys will now go on to compete in several competitions over the summer, best of luck boys.

As the rugby boots, football posts and hockey sticks are packed away, the cricket pitches, tennis nets and athletics tracks are welcomed. Summer sport commences on the first Tuesday back next term, so please make sure you have the correct gear for your sporting code, and please check the sports board for any updates on your sport. Have a great holiday!

SKI TEAM REPORT

The Skiers had a bit of a rocky season this year, eventually turning up for the North Island Secondary School Ski Champs (NISSSC) after many days spent in the hut in blizzard conditions with the mountain closed. However, the boys put on a good show, with the team coming out at 38th out of 121 teams.

Rain and thick cloud caused the champs to be postponed, so when the time came to race, the course was slushy and slow. Soft snow meant ruts were quickly cut into the track, making the races a spectacle to watch, with wipeouts abounding. Luckily all of the team made it down without injury and secured a placing, as there were no second chances:

GIANT SLALOM:

Carlo Haab 23rd Russell Kyle 55th Gallagher Houlbrooke 60th Oli Clive Griffin 73rd

In the lead up to the event, most of the mountain was closed, so the boys spent the time practising their tricks in the freestyle park. The effort paid off, securing the team with some impressive placings: (admittedly it was a much smaller event)

FREESTYLE:

Gallagher Houlbrooke 10th Oli Clive-Griffin 11th Russell Kyle 14th

TRAMPING CLUB

The Tramping Club completed two successful tramps this term. The first tramp consisted of a lively bunch of boys and St Matthew’s girls, all working towards their Duke of Edinburgh. We went into Roaring Stag on Friday night and made the hut by 9pm. The boys quickly set up tents and then had a “Pitney mince special”. Saturday morning, we walked up and looked at the recently renovated Cattle Ridge Hut. That night there was a large bonfire, yarns and a lot of jokes from Lorenzo! The boys coped well with knee high mud and wet boots. Thanks also to Ms Evans for making it happen.

Later during Term 2, Mr Mann and I took a group up to Atiwhakatu Hut on a rainy, wet Friday. Snow was low and the Tararua Peaks looked magnificent. Saturday morning we climbed up to Jumbo Hut. There the boys had snow fights, noodles and more cups of tea as we waited for the Southerly to pass through. Sunday was pristine for getting over the tops to Powell Hut via Mt Holdsworth. It was HARD work. The snow was thigh deep and the track was completely covered with snow. On the tops the boys skated on a frozen tarn with George Parke being the only one to crack the ice. McDonalds was a must have after two solid days of tramping. Tash Kyle

Big Sing Finale 253 choirs. 24 selected. Finally, after a long journey, Viva made it to the Big Sing Finale.

On the afternoon when the email came through, the excitement was shown in the shrieks that filled room 8. Soon the excitement was replaced with panic when realization set in of what was lying ahead: fundraising that would reduce the huge cost, refining current repertoire AND learning 2 pieces in about five weeks.

The parent machine set in motion and fundraising started. From selling raffle tickets, to sausage sizzles, a movie night to our fundraising concert, it was a massive effort. Huge thanks must go to all parents who supported this venture in whatever shape or form. Trust House must also be thanked for their generous donation and grant. It was also heart-warming that former pupils, Daniel Saunders (Head Boy 2002) and Ping Lim (2010) gave very generous donations. The students certainly appreciated everyone’s support and efforts.

After hours’ of practice, the day finally came when the Tranzit bus arrived to take us down to Wellington. We were very lucky to have accommodation 2 minutes’ walk to the Michael Fowler that would be our mainstay over the next few days. Days were long and packed.

Listening to the other choirs opened eyes and ears to new possibilities. To hear not only the interesting and difficult repertoire tackled, but to hear the fantastic technique was definitely a learning curve. On Friday morning, we had to deliver our first programme. To get a standing ovation from Dilworth College was a highlight. Saturday morning we had to deliver our second programme. On both occasions, the tension was palpable as we prepared in the warm- up room and in the Green room.

It is difficult to describe the atmosphere where there are 600 students from across the country, and they all share the love of singing. Ending the Gala concert with a combined item - A te Tarakihi – certainly created goose bumps for all! By now most people know that we were awarded a Bronze. The adjudicators commented that “ it was an enjoyable recital, with attractive and committed choral singing. Great contrast in your programme choice.”

We have learnt much for the future.

Huge thanks must go to the team: Mrs Eckford and Mrs Thomson for their musical input. Mrs Cheetham spent hours on her superb, meticulous organisation and without her, and Mr Gaffney’s support – this trip would not have occurred.

Boarding House News

TERM 3 ACTIVITIES

The boys finished the term with a visit to the Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre, where two of the many highlights were the chance to see a kiwi and feeding eels. The final trip of the term was to a farm owned by the parents of one of our Year 9 boarders. The boys were given the opportunity to handle and feed orphaned lambs and get up close to a very large pet steer. A huge thank you to the Wyeth family for being such wonderful hosts and giving our boys a very special experience.

DERIVED GRADE EXAMS

These will start as soon as the boys return to school. They are very important for the boys as an opportunity to gauge how their preparation is going but also the results serve as a backstop if they are unable to sit final exams.

It is not compulsory for the boys to remain in boarding while they are sitting these or during the final exams.

I believe that staying at school is a very good idea. While the students are here we will organise three supervised study sessions for the Year 11 and 12 students. Year 13 boys are free to study in their boarding houses but failure to apply themselves properly at the correct times will result in loss of this privilege.

In addition to the four study periods that are provided for the boarders (including the one in the evening) the boys will also have access to teachers and any extra tuition that occurs during these times.

Leave during this period is the same as at other times. The boys will use the electronic leave system and you will be required to OK their absence from the house. The same system is used when the final exams start.

EXEAT WEEKENDS

The end of week 1 will be an exeat for Labour Weekend, which falls in the middle of the senior derived exams.

The second exeat takes place at the end of week 4, Friday 9 November.

It is disappointing when boys are returned to school on exeat weekends before staff have arrived back and the houses are open. Please do not drop boys off before 5.00pm.

UNIFORM

Please note that boys must leave and arrive at the boarding house in uniform. This means town leave uniform for all students unless they are using public transport in which case formal uniform is required.

STAFF

We welcomed Mrs Bea Harris (former Cranleigh Matron) back on site and into Repton House for the last two weeks of the term to cover for Liz Eaton who was taking long service leave. Congratulations to Liz for completing 30 years of service!

Cameron Lindsay, who has been part of the PIFA, has taken up residence in Cranleigh House where he will do duties until the end of the year.

BOARDING HOUSE REPORTS

Boarding House reports will have been sent out at the end of Term 3. Please let me know if you did not receive one. This is the final boarding report for the year.

HOUSE OF ORIGIN

Congratulations to Repton House for winning a very tight game of hockey 3-2. Joe Falloon scored both of Cranleigh’s goals while Repton’s were shared between Jake Hewitt, Harry Eastwick and Jake McIntyre. The touch rugby was also a very tight affair ending in a golden point situation where Cranleigh managed to get over the line and secure their first win of the year.

END OF YEAR

There is an expectation that all boys will be back at school for the end of the year. For boarders the dates below are very important.

Thursday 29 November, all boys are expected to be in their boarding houses with their formal uniform. The boarding houses’ end-of-year supper takes place on this night followed by prizegivings in the boarding houses.

Friday 30 November is a school day and the carol service is that evening.

Saturday 1 December is the school final assembly.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

I would like to welcome Junyeong Choi from South Korea into Year 10. Everyone has been very impressed with how quickly he has settled into classes and life in NZ. This is due in no small way to the wonderful support that he has enjoyed from the local boys.

During September I was lucky enough to spend some time at an education fair in South Korea and to visit China. It was great meeting with some current parents and agents as well as introducing Rathkeale College to prospective students.

Many parents talk about the difficulty of controlling time spent on devices; in some cases, controlling content; and often about the distraction caused by devices. Most of us realise that a balance is good but being able to enforce it is problematic.

Below is a possible solution for us all. Please take the time to read the links.

What is offered is the ability to control screen time and the sites that can be accessed. It could be that you want devices off at a certain time or to limit games and social media to specific periods. Certainly, this would be great during study time in the boarding house!

FAMILY ZONE: PROTECTING YOUR STUDENTS AT SCHOOL, AT HOME AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN.

As part of our ongoing commitment to educational excellence and our duty of care to ensure students’ safety and well-being, Trinity Schools Trust Board have partnered with Family Zone to provide families with a complete online cyber safety solution. This platform will enable the College to protect your child during school hours (School Zone/Mobile Zone) and you to take control at home (Mobile Zone/Home Zone). It is a comprehensive system that will cover all your child's devices, including their mobile phones, on both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connected networks.

• Wrap-around protection for students regardless of the internet connection • Guardianship for boarding students • Ability to relax rules based on age and maturity in line with NetSafe recommendations • Adoption of best practice and best efforts to ensure students are protected • Parental app support carried out by Family Zone • Provide parents with a tool where they can engage with their children to have

evidence-based conversations about cyber safety and responsible internet use • Parents have flexibility outside of school hours to set rules that are appropriate for

their children • Parents can opt to subscribe to a third party cyber expert.

The school will cover the cost of School Zone and Mobile Zone. You have the option of using Home Zone.

To complete the circle of safety for your child, however, we need your participation.

Please visit the appropriate Cyber Safety Hub below for more information and to set up your family’s account. Rathkeale College: https://www.familyzone.com/rathkeale-nz
