SchedulingofRecitals
Degree-requiredDMA,MM,andSeniorFullandHalfRecitalsareeligibletobescheduledintheForbesCenterRecitalHall.JuniorHalfRecitalswillbescheduledinAnthony-Seeger.SchedulingwilltakeplaceintheSOMwithMs.Macomber.TheSOMisusingacomputer-generatedlotterysystemtocutbackonstudentsmissingclassesorhavingtowaitinthehallwayforhourswaitingtosignup.Everystudentwillreceivealinkviaemailtoenterthelotteryandreceivetheir10-minuteappointmentwithMs.Macomber.Priortoschedulingyourrecital,youmustattendoneoftwoDMARecitalOrientations.Ifyoudonotattendtheorientationyouwillnotbepermittedtosignupforarecital.

Cancellations

RecitalHallRules
Seating:SeatingisGeneralAdmission.TherearenoticketsandnochargeforDMARecitals.Onlycrewmembers,performers,ushers,andotherauthorizedpersonnelarepermittedbackstage,onstage,andinthedressingrooms.Friendsandfamilynotdirectlyinvolvedintheperformancearenotpermittedbackstage.FoodandDrink:Performersarepermittedtohavesealablewaterbottlesonstageorbackstageonly.NootherfoodordrinkispermittedintheRecitalHallorbackstageatanytime.Thisincludesduringperformancesandrehearsals.Anyfoodordrink,otherthanwater,integraltoyourperformancemustreceiveapprovalfromboththeSchoolofMusicandtheForbesCenterProductionOfficepriortoyourrehearsal.BuildingEmergencies:Ifafirealarmgoesoffinthebuilding,allaudiencemembers,performers,andcrewmustexitthebuilding.Thestagemanagerwillmakeanannouncementtotheaudienceandassistintheirevacuation.ArepresentativefromtheHarrisonburgFireDepartmentmustcometotheCentertogivetheallclear.Atthatpoint,patronscanbeletbackintothebuilding,andyourrecitalmayresume.Electronics:Theuseoflaptops,cellphones,oranyotherelectronicdevicesinthehouseisstrictlyprohibitedduringperformances.Theuseofcamerasandphotographyisprohibitedduringbothrehearsalsandperformances.Itisdistractingfortheperformersandotheraudiencemembers.Recording:Pleaseseethesectiononpage5regardingauthorizedrecordingopportunities.LiveStreaming:Pleaseseethesectiononpage6regardingauthorizedstreamingopportunities.AfterthePerformance:Followingtheperformance,theproductioncrewwillneedtocleartheRecitalHallwithinfiveminutesinordertoadheretothetightproductionschedule.Audiencemembersarenotpermittedtowalkonstagefromthehouseandshouldonlygreetperformersinthelobby.

HarpsichordMovers:Ifyouwillbeusingaharpsichordanditmustmoveduringyourperformance,youmustsupplyfourpeopletomovetheinstrument,asdescribedintheDMARecitalHarpsichordProtocolonpage6.Thesefourpeoplecannotbeyourushers,butmaybeyourpageturnerorguestmusiciansplayinginyourrecital.Itisrecommendedthatthesepeopleattendyourrehearsaltobetrained.Iftheydoso,theywillbeexpectedtoarriveforyourrecital30minutespriortoyourstarttime.Iftheyhavenotbeentrained,theywillbeexpectedtoarrive45minutespriortoyourstarttimeforthatpurpose.
TechnicalInfo
Recording:YourrecitalwillberecordedbyTomCarrandhisteam.Acoustics:Theacousticsoftheroomwillbeadjustedduringyourrehearsal.SoundReinforcement:Soundreinforcement,i.e.microphones,isnotavailableforDMArecitals.SoundplaybackmustreceiveapprovalfromtheForbesProductionofficepriortoyourrehearsaltoensuretherequiredequipmentisavailable.Projections:Videoprojectionsupportisprovidedforcurriculum-requiredlecture-recitalsonly.ForbesCenterequipmentwillnotbeavailableforotheruses.LectureRecital:Ifyouaregivingalecture-recitalandyouwouldliketoutilizethistechnology,youmustprovideyourowncomputerwithaVGAoutputorcontactForbesProductioninadvancetorequesttheuseoftheForbescomputer.WecanprovideaPowerPoint/Keynoteremotecontrol,whichwillrequireoneavailableUSBport.Lighting:Lightingwillconsistofano-colorwashofthestage.Houselightstypicallyremainataprogram-readinglevel.
LengthofPerformance
Yourrecitalisexpectedtobecompletedwithin60minutesofyourscheduledrecitalstarttime.Thisincludesanytransitions,introductions,pauses,intermissionsandbows.ForDMArecitals,someminimalflexibilitymayexistintheschedule.Ifyoubelievethereisachancethatyourrecitalwillrunlongerthan60minutes,pleasecontacttheForbesProductionOfficeimmediatelysothatwemaycheckthecalendarandverifyifextratimeisavailable. EncoreperformancesarenotpermittedatDMARecitals.Attheendoftheperformancetherecitalistmayreturntothestageforasmanybowsasheorshedesires.Thecrewmemberopeningthestagedoorwillconfirm,visuallyorverbally,withtherecitalistwhentherecitalistdoesnotwanttobowfurther.Intheinterestofaudiencesafety,foraudiencemembersexitingtheHall,thehouselightswillbebroughtupifthestagemanagerhearstheapplausediminishing.

AuthorizedRecordingOpportunities
YourrecitalwillberecordedbyTomCarrandhisteam.OfficialForbesaudiorecordingsareonlyavailableforDMArecitals;allotherrecordingsaretheresponsibilityofthestudent.Additionally,onevideorecordingispermittedforeachDMArecital.Ifanticipatedcompetition/jobsubmissionsrequiremultiple-anglevideo,exceptionswillbemadewithintheguidelinessetforthbytheFireMarshal.Inaccordancewithcopyrightlaw,anyrecordingofyourrecital,audioorvideo,isauthorizedforyourarchivaluseonly.Theserecordingsarenotauthorizedfordistributionorbroadcast,includingvideohostingwebsitessuchasYouTube.AnytripodsmustbeclearofallwalkwaysinaccordancewiththeFireMarshalandshouldbesetupatthecenterdeskbelowtheterraceseatingarea.Photographyisnotpermittedatyourrecitalorrehearsal.Livestreaming:RecitalistsmayelecttohireastudentoperatorthroughtheSOMtoproducealivestreamusingtheSOMlivestreamsystem
• A $30 fee is paid directly to the operator by the recitalist. • That payment is due to the operator before the start of the recital. • Prior to the recital, the recitalist should give a copy of the program to the operator and discuss their stage setup
and any significant changes to it. • The recitalist will receive a link for their event to share and publicize. • The recital recording will stay available at the same link after the concert. It will be unlisted, but anyone with the
link will be able to watch it. • An archival copy of the recording will be sent via OneDrive after the recital
Thelivestreamsystemisself-containedandoperatedsolelybytheSchoolofMusic.
PianoUse
Therearefour9-footSteinwayConcertDpianosthatservetheneedsofallperformancesheldintheForbesCenterConcertHallandRecitalHall.Recitalistsarenotgivenachoiceofpiano;however,youwillbeprovidedthesamepianoatbothyourdressrehearsalandyourrecital.PreparedPianoandOtherNon-traditionalTechniquesApreparedpianoisapianothathasbeenmodifiedinsomefashion,i.e.anobjectplacedonthestrings.Non-traditionaltechniquesincludeanyformofinteractingwiththepianootherthanfingerstouchingthe88keys.Approvaltouseapianoinapreparedmannermustbesecuredfromthepianotechnicianatleastfourweekspriortoyourrecital.

1. AllstructuralchangestoanypianomustbesupervisedorperformedbytheSchoolofMusic’spianotechnician.Thisincludesremovingthelidorothercasepartsandattachinganythingtostringsorsoundboardtomodifythesound.
2. Markingstrings.Smallstickersmaybeusedonplatepartstomarknotes.Onlythestickersprovidedbythepianoshoparetobeused.Theperformerisresponsibleforremovinganystickersimmediatelyafteranyrehearsalorperformance.Thereshouldbenothingapplieddirectlytothestrings.
3. Strikingandpluckingstrings.Stringsmaybestruckorpluckedwithfingersorguitarpick.Sinceoilfromtheskinwilltarnishstringsovertime,pleasewashhandswellbeforetouchinganystring.Otherdevicesmustalwaysbeofamaterialthatwillnotmarorscratchstrings.Onsteelstrings,onlymaterialsthataresofterthanthesteelstringmaybeused,suchasbrassoraluminum.Copper-woundbassstringsmustalsobestruckorpluckedwithamaterialsofterthanthecopper.Acceptablematerialsincludewood,plastic,rubber,etc….Thepianotechnicianisavailabletohelptheperformerselectmaterialsthatwillnotdamagethepiano.
4. ForeignObjects.Insomecases,literaturecallsfortheinsertionofscrewsormutesbetweenpianostrings.Inextremecases,anolderpianooutsideofourfourconcertgrandswillneedtobebroughtin.Again,amaterialsofterthanthestringmustbeused,suchasbrassoraluminum.Thepianotechnicianwillmakethefinaldecisiononacceptablematerials.
5. Extremevolume.Thereisafinelinetobedrawnbetweenpassionatemusicalexpressionandoutrightbangingonapiano.Pleaseusegoodjudgmentwhenplayingaboveaforte.Harshplayingisdamagingandwillnotbetolerated.
6. Commonsense.Mostdamagetopianoscaneasilybeavoidedbyusinggoodjudgment.Whenyouconsultwiththepianotechnician,analternativecanusuallybefoundtosatisfyboththeperformerandthispolicy.
HarpsichordProtocol
ContactMs.Macombertodiscussyourharpsichordneedsatleastfiveweekspriortoyourrecital.Shewilltellyouwhenandwhereyoucanrehearsewithaharpsichordbeforeyourfinaldressrehearsal.Ms.MacomberwillarrangefortheharpsichordtobemovedtoandfromtheRecitalHallforyourrehearsalandrecital.Productioncrewmemberswillmovetheharpsichordfrombackstagetoonstageatthescheduledstarttimeofyourrehearsalor30minutespriortothehouseopeningfortherecital.DMArecitalistsmustprovidetheirownharpsichordtunerandaccesstotunetheinstrumentmustbearrangedwiththeForbesProductionoffice.Duetothedemandsoftheproductioncalendar,yourtunermustcontacttheProductionOfficedirectlyaminimumoftwoweeksaheadoftimetoscheduletheirvisit.Iftheharpsichordistomoveduringyourrecital,youmustprovidefourindividualsforthatpurpose.Itishighlyrecommendedthatyourmoversattendyourrehearsaltobeproperlytrainedinhowtohandletheinstrument.Alternatively,theymustarrivenolaterthan45minutesbeforeyourscheduledrecitalstarttime,iftheyhavenotalreadybeentrained.

RehearsalDay
The90-minuterehearsalslotyouscheduledwithMs.Macomberisall-inclusive.Thismeansthatwithin90minutes,youwillneedtoload-in,tune,rehearse,run,discuss,work,re-run,andload-out.Thestagemanagerwillworktohelpyoumakethemostefficientuseofyourtime,butyoushouldexpecttospendsomeamountoftimeansweringquestionsthatwillultimatelyresultinamorepolishedperformance.Inordertoaccommodateasmanyrecitalistsaspossible,rehearsalsaretypicallyscheduledback-to-back.Pleasebeconsiderateofyourfellowrecitalistsbyremainingquietastheyarefinishingupandbyclearingoutquicklyonceyourtimehaselapsed.Itisrecommendedthatyouarriveafewminutesaheadofyourscheduledstarttimeandwaitinthehallwayoutsidethebackstagearea.Pleasebecarefulnottoblockthedoubledoorstothebackstageareaorthepianostorageroom.Assoonasthestagemanagerisable,heorshewillinviteyouin.Inordertohaveaproductiveandefficientrehearsal,thinkaboutyourtransitionsaheadoftime.Thiswillsaveyouvaluablerehearsaltime.Oneofthebestwaystohelpyoufigureoutwhatmightmakeyourrecitalflowsmoothlyistogoandwatchotherrecitalists.Ifyouneedhelpdrawingupyourplan,don’thesitatetocontacttheProductionOffice.Program:Pleasebringaprintedcopyofyourprogramtoyourrehearsalforthestagemanager.Itcanbeadraftversion,butyouwillbeaskedtoconfirmyourshoworder.Starting:Thefirstfewminutesofyourrehearsalwillbeforthestagemanagertogooverafewlogisticswithyou,youraccompanist,andanyguestperformers.Itisunderstoodthatmusicstudentsareexceptionallybusy,butitisessentialthat—ifatallpossible—allperformersattendyourrehearsal.Ifyourrecitalincludesaguestensemble(e.g.achoir)thatcannotattendasacompleteunit,oneortworepresentativesshouldbeatyourrehearsaltowalktheblockingforentrancesandexits.Havingsomeoneelseexplainingtotheothersonrecitaldaywillgiveyouonelesstaskonwhichtofocus.Ending:Plantofinishyourrehearsalfiveminutesearly.Thisallowstimeforyoutoaskthestagemanagerquestionsandtouchbasewithyourteacher.Italsoallowsthenextrehearsaltobeginontime.Guests:YourDressRehearsalisclosed.ThismeansthattheonlypeoplepermittedintheRecitalHallareyourappliedinstructor(ortheirrepresentative)andpeopledirectlyinvolvedintherecitalasdescribedinthePersonnelsectiononpage4.Foracademicreasons,additionalattendeesmaybeapprovedbytheProductionOfficewithatleastoneweek’snoticeandtheconsentofyourappliedinstructor.Recording:Youmayrecordyourrehearsalwithaself-containedrecordingdevicelikeaZoom.Nootherequipmentorpersonnelmaybebroughtintorecordyourrehearsal.Dressingrooms:Thedressingroomsarenotavailableforrehearsalssoitisstronglyrecommendedthatyouarrivedressedforyourrehearsal.

RecitalDay
DressingRoom/GreenRoom:EveryeffortwillbemadetoprovidetheGreenRoomandtwodressingrooms.However,ifyourrecitaloccursatthesametimeasanotherperformanceattheForbesCentertheroomsmaynotbeavailable.Iftheywillnotbeavailableyouwillbeinformedofthisatyourrehearsal.YouwillbegivenaccesstotheRecitalHallandyoursupportareasupto2½hourspriortoyourrecitalperformancetime.Thistimewillbeusedforsetupaswellaswarm-up.Attheverylatest,you,yourushersandanyadditionalperformersareexpectedtoarriveonehourpriortoyourrecital.Please,checkinwiththestagemanagerintheRecitalHalldoorbeforegoingtotheDressingRoomorGreenRoom.Assoonasheorsheisable,thestagemanagerwillallowyouonstagetoset-up,tuneandwarmup.Thedressingroomsandgreenroomwillremainunlockedonrecitaldays—pleasedonotleavevaluablesinthem.Theuseoftheseroomsisprovidedasacourtesy,andtheForbesCenteranditsstaffarenotresponsibleforitemsleftunattended.Also,beawarethattheseroomsaresharedwithotherrecitalistssopleasekeepthemtidyandcleanupafteryourselfbeforeyouleave.Rememberthatyourdressingroom,thegreenroomaswellasthebackstageaccesshallwayandRecitalHallbackstageareonlyforpersonneldirectlyinvolvedinyourrecital.Schedule:WewillbeginthePre-ShowAnnouncementexactlyontime;pleaseadviseallperformers,ushers,pageturners,faculty,andfamilywhoplantoattend.Followingtherecital,itiscustomaryforyourindividualappliedinstructortogreetyouinthebackstagearea.Allotherwell-wishers(family,classmates)mustwaittogreetyouinthelobby.
