PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES I would like to pass on my congratulations to Jack Gervasi, Chloe Calleja and Ciana Field who’s artworks were selected for the Print that 2! Print and Drawing Awards at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery last Saturday the 14th May.

Our school successfully raised $457.10 for the Stewart House BBQ and free dress Fundraiser on the 6th May. This is a charity that creates fantastic opportunities for students in Rural and Remote areas and many Balranald students have benefited from Stewart House in the past. Thank you to Mrs Sharon Nelson and Ms Caryn Jones for your organisation.

Allie Collyer is a community Legal Education Worker for the Murray Mallee Community Legal Service. She delivered some information sessions to our students and staff on topics such as cyber-bullying, social media and sexting. It is important that we provide education in this area as young people often have no idea that their actions can have legal consequences it is important for them to know the law, the consequences of certain actions and how things may differ from state to state. Thank you to students and staff for their participation.

Well done to Jordyn Joliffe who represented Balranald Central School in the Hay War Memorial High Schools Open Girls AFL team which is within the NSW combined high schools sporting system competition. Jordyn played against Deniliquin and Finley. She played centre, centre half forward and full forward, Jordyn kicked seven goals including the winning goal against Finley. Congratulations Jordyn!

Thank you to students and staff who participated in the community Variety Concert on Friday 6th May. The night was a great success largely due to Year 11 student Adam Simpson who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and Miss Carmen Woods and Mr Thomas Connellan for their organisation of the school acts. Congratulations to Margaret Butler for her over coordination of a fantastic community event.

I would like to thank our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for their efforts in last week’s NAPLAN testing. The student’s behaviour and efforts on the days is to be commended. Well done!

Have a great week!

Mr Aaron Flagg

Lamb Marking Report by Richard White

The date was Friday the 6th May and the day dawned bright as the Stage 5 Agriculture students boarded the bus for the journey to “Glen Ewan”, property of Bruce and Joanne Salau. As is often the case, the journey proved uneventful, with the highlight possibly being the gate opening of first timer, Dan Woolhouse.

Lamb Marking was the reason behind the bus trip, with several hundred crossbred lambs waiting anxiously to be handled, thrown and losing of their innocence with testes tampering, tail ringing, needling, ear piercing and ear art administering some of the things happening.

As we arrived the lambs had just been drafted from their mums and had that anxious look about them. The students climbing off the bus also wore this anxious look but I think it was for a different reason. Bright clothes with long sleeves was the order of the day with photo appeal and burr avoidance the reasoning behind this. Young Loui Gervasi and Em Jolliffe had matching shirts on and this set the standard as we set about the task.

The catching pen was quickly filled with Javen ‘Shorty’ Ricevuto, Loui and Dan eager to load the cradles. Em Jolliffe was on ear marking duty with Abbie Baird on vaccination. Kiandra Dalton had the elastrator pliers loaded up and Will Morton had ear taggers in one pocket and elastrator pliers in the other. Young Riley Pearce also had the ear tagging equipment and was happy to learn this skill early on.

It is always a crucial moment from when the first scrotum is ringed, the first needle goes in, blood appears from the first cut ear and the first kick in the face from the first incorrectly placed lamb in the

cradle, to see how the students react. It was positives all round and so the lamb marking progressed with all students having a crack at the various jobs with everyone supporting and helping each other.

The highlight of the day was possibly morning tea and lunch with Jo supplying a vast array of cakes and biscuits and then a wonderful BBQ lunch. No sheep fries, just hamburgers, snags, onion and salad and a cold can to wash it all down.

A few minutes watching Loui, Javen and Riley developing their axe wielding skills reminded us all that we were here to mark lambs. Enough said.

It was a great day and many thanks to Bruce and Jo for allowing us the lamb marking experience.

VISUAL ARTS Students in secondary Visual Arts are currently working on a variety of projects.

Year 7/8 are learning about portraiture and have begun to learn about tone and how to draw the features of the face correctly. They have experimented with a chromatic black scale for the base of their portrait and are going to be learning about how to create skin tones.

Year 9/10 are making felted landscapes. They are basing their ideas on Australian landscape artist John Olsen, and will be creating their own abstract felt landscape.

Year 11 is working on a unit of work about Modernism. Students are in the process of making sculptures and prints based on the work of Pablo Picasso and the style of Cubism.

Glass art Last term students in year 9, 10 and 11 travelled to Moulamein to participate in Kathy Gibson’s glass art workshop. They produced some beautiful pieces of work which are pictured below.

Print That! Chloe Calleja, Jack Gervasi and Ciana Field have had work selected for the Swan Hill regional gallery exhibition called Print That! It is excellent to see such great talent being exhibited in local galleries with other schools of the area. The exhibition starts on the 14th May and finishes on the 10th of July.

MUSIC

Variety Night Concert – Theatre Royal

Students in the school bands played on Friday the 6th of May at the Royal

Theatre to raise money for a grand piano. The students performed extremely

well and are to be commended on their achievement! Samuel Simmons, Chloe

Calleja and Kiandra Dalton did a great job playing individual pieces with

confidence. Adam Simpson did a fantastic job as sound technician on the

night. Thank you to Adam for supplying all PA equipment. Without this, the

night would not have been possible.

PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE This year Balranald Central School entered two teams into The Premier’s Debating Challenge for Year 9 & 10.

On Monday, May 10, ten students from Years 8 to 10 travelled to Griffith for the first round of debating against Ardlethan Central School.

BCS Team A, consisting of Jeremy Morris (1st speaker), Javen Ricevuto , (2nd speaker), Sam Simmons (3rd speaker), Jessica Rowe (Team Advisor) and Sophie Renfrey (reserve) won the coin toss and became the affirmative team for a topic relating to education. All boys were all commended on their ability to speak without referring to their notes and the strength of their arguments.

Jada Phillips (1st speaker), Keely Gaston (2nd speaker), Kobe Lloyd (3rd speaker) and Chloe Calleja (reserve) made up BCS Team B and took the negative position on a topic relating to sport. Once again, the adjudicator praised the strength of each speaker’s argument, and the high quality of presentation.

The Ardlethan Central School team has been competing in The Premier’s Debating Challenge for many years and, as such, contained very experienced debaters. Although BCS did not win either debate, they performed incredibly well and did not go down by many points at all. Both adjudicator and opposition were surprised to learn that this was the first debate that any of our students had competed in.

We look forward to our next debate against Hay War Memorial School.
