2. Joining Up Activity Teach Something Pair up with one person and teach them something Find another partner and teach that person what you just learned. 8:30ish8. Core GroupPurpose:- Smaller, more intimate group; consistent membership so folks can get to know each other more deeply; place to debrief, get feedback, give feedback, check-in, get support, talk about something not yet ready to say in large group

All group members participate. Story Cords each person tells their story when they are done they tie a knot in the Core Group Cord & passes it to the next person. Repeat until everyone in the group has taken a turn. Once the final person has told their story, tie the end of the cord to make a loop. Post stories if they drew them out & gallery them to get a feel for the rest of what folks wrote Create name & symbol for Core Group & chart on paper Decided how you will present to the community quickly tomorrow morning Norms for us as a Core Group Decorate mailboxes Any other thoughts/feelings, reactions thus far9:30ishLate Night Activities (Ice Cream Social?)Purpose:- Relaxed atmosphere for further interaction, connection, community building...

9a noonWhat & So What!?!?!? .. Exploring Dom/Sub dynamicsPurpose:-Introduce PANNING skills-Who are we (Common Ground)-Review SJ Commitment - Get folks grounded in dom/sub as a core foundation of Social Justice- Core Group work

1. Welcome, Agenda Announcements Mailboxes out, use notebook paper in your folder to connect with folks Reminders about meal times Nametags! Create high 5 buddies Talk about the Malcolm X quote I cannot lead where I wont go. I cannot teach what we dont know 2 minutes Join up with another buddy group and explore the topic for a minute

2. Individuals create a chart of their campus/learning goals Review & handout SJ Commitment Worksheet, if not earliertalk about purpose & time on Saturday afternoon to complete Reflection prompts: Strengths of your institution regarding inclusion Challenges on campus with respect to inclusion What youre thinking you want help in creating back on campus Any questions you have for other participants that can help you in your project Leave room for notes & comments from others

3. PanningPurpose- To teach skillPANNING- To have them explore their multiple group memberships- To create a container for the work: working with agreements, Core Groups, SJ Commitment

Brief overview & skill practice in the moment Use PowerPoint images to get folks to panand practice

PANNING Pay Attention Now; observe whats going on inside of you and around you Notice patterns by group identity No assumptions, prejudgements

4. Group differentiation/common ground activity Circle up and move them into groups on 7-8 categories (born in US or US territories/another country; age; ethnicity/culture; race; gender identity & expression; religion/spiritual practice; class; ableness/disability status; educational background Then open up to step-in/move-in for additional ones Debrief in small group/pairs then large group What was the impact of the activity? Any surprises? What did you PAN/track about self or group? Easiest to connect with? What had you not thought about?

Who am I and What do I Bring: Social Justice Grounding Get into groups of 6 folks you dont know each person will have 5 minutes to talk about their big 8 identities

Dimensions of Difference/Breadth of awareness Who Are You? join up with high 5 buddy (pick one person to be apple, one to be orange) each take a few minutes to tell each other about yourself unpack individual identities then have apples then ask oranges who are you?, oranges

Cycle of oppression

Current Dynamics of Oppression Gallery Individuals write: a time they experienced exclusionary/disrespectful treatment; and a time they witnessed disrespectful/exclusionary behaviors and didnt respond as effectively as they would have liked. (If students struggle with examples, Seed Gallery with examples from Joe Feagins recent book, recent SJTI example) (until 10:15, then break until 10:25a) Get into Core Groups: read examples (Lead facilitators will rotate stories from group to group) Discuss in Core Groups Large group debrief/impact

Card Activity Playing card activity ~ possible debrief prompts: a time you relate to being high card; time relate to being in low cards; pick a dominant group: heres something Ive done as a member of a dominant group to create more inclusion and/or interrupt negative dynamics and something I struggle withone thing Id like for you to know about me as a .sub: proud of and a challenge I have from sub place.

Subordinated Group caucuses Explore sub groups and write on board/easel paper Students choose 1 of your subordinated groups and form a caucus group Use prompts to self-facilitate a dialogue: times you experienced discriminating/exclusionary treatment on campus, in society/familyhow do you feel as a member of this grouppatterns of treatment that exist on your campus/local communitywhat you want others to know about your group and/or do differently. Encourage folks to RELATE, ASK, PAN, SHARE (RAPS) Core Group facilitators may join a group

Subordinated Group caucuses Speak out in large group TBD ~ a more formal speak out, or let it emerge as individuals feel the energy to share

7:30-9:15 p.m. CORE GROUP Purpose- To provide space to debrief, make meaning, engage around the days activities- Open time to debrief and reflect and dialogue

Possible prompts: Explore your D/S groups: which ones do you work? Dont really work? Why? Impact? On which issues do you actively engage? Speak up? Work for change? On which issues do you slide by? Avoid? Open space to debrief from the day..

9-noon DOM/ SUB continued and NOW WHAT?

Announcements; framing of the dayGetting Started High 5 buddiestalk about what you are committed to doing today

Dom/SubDominant Group Caucus ~ use a shorter checklist of common predictable behaviors and attitudes; and something youve done that negatively impacted others

Individually complete worksheet (see handout) Self-facilitated caucuses to share, relate, ask, pan ~ RAPS Possible other prompts: What is it like to feel stuck, not competentwhat are your fears and concerns as an ally? Your triggers? When are you at your best? When have you been an effective ally? Explore benefit of dialogue with other DOMs

1-6pm Afternoon Session

SJ Commitment ~ take your Chart from Thursday and complete your SJC 1st part: Personal Goal Setting 2nd part: Your plan for a campus intervention (new or revised program, policy change, improving a campus service, training, dialogue groups, etc.)

Triggers ~ short, basic and roots Journal about one major trigger where didnt feel good about how you reacted, i.e., your reaction undermined the relationship, wasnt congruent with your SJ intentions, didnt effectively shift the dynamics towards respect, inclusion, connection. Triads to share Journal about the possible roots of your triggering event Triads to discuss/share about roots And to offer other ways to have responded in that triggering event

CORE GROUP Discuss where you get stuck and why/roots Discuss how to anticipate triggers.heal roots

Engaging to create change; by-stander choices Small group discussions and quick skits to show how NOT to be a Bystander Debrief in half of group or large group for costs/benefits of speaking up/staying silent/being a by-stander
