Dear international
students and researchers
of the Faculty of Social Theology
and the Study of Religion,
Conveniently situated at the heart of modern Greece, the historic city of Athens, the
Faculty of Social Theology and the Study of Religion is part and parcel of the Athens
School of Theology, one of the founding Schools of the National and Kapodistrian
University of Athens, a leading university of the South-Eastern Mediterranean. The
international edition of our Study Guide serves as a handy shortcut connecting the
Faculty with their academic counterparts worldwide, while supporting prospective and
current international students. Actively engaged in our culturally multifaceted and
socially ever-changing worlds, we focus on the interdisciplinary study of theology and
religion in their social dimension and dynamics.
The idea of establishing a University in Greece emerged alongside with the Greek
War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution. The National and
Kapodistrian University of Athens, officially founded in April 14th, 1837, is the first
University not only of Greece but both the Balkan peninsula and the Eastern

Mediterranean region. Our University is currently the largest state institution of higher
learning in Greece, and among the largest universities in Europe. As all other Greek
universities, it is a self-governed legal entity of public law and all major policy issues are
determined by the Ministry of National Education and Religion. Retaining its academic
autonomy, it fully respects the constitutionally secured right to everyone for a free
education. This is possible because it is funded by the state. Moreover, it is progressively
succeeding to benefit from its property and legacies, as well as from the funding of
research projects with national and international partners.
Now, in terms of organization and academics, our Faculty is a dynamic synthesis
of three Sections: (a) Section of Canon Law and Byzantine Theology from the 9th Cen. C.E.
onwards - Biblical studies and Cultural life of the Mediterranean, (b) Section of Christian
Worship, Education and Pastoral studies and (c) Section of Religious studies, Philosophy
and Sociology. In close cooperation with our counterparts in the EU and internationally,
we offer fully accredited undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral
programmes of study and research, various traineeships and open seminar courses.
Important during your stay and studies in Greece are also agencies such as the
Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, the State Scholarships
Foundation, the Study in Greece Gateway and the local embassy or cultural institution
associated with the country of your permanent residence. In addition, various platforms
are available within the University Network to help you put some colour in your study
plan, such as e-Class, Open Courses, and Student Services Online (MyStudies).
Visiting students/researchers via ERASMUS+/CIVIS pathways are most welcome
to opt in, while all interested in fully attending and completing our programmes should
be able to meet the Greek language requirements set by the University and the Faculty.
Being the largest of its kind in the world, the Modern Greek Teaching Centre of the
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens offers all the required courses and
certification, as well as an early terrain for familiarizing yourselves with various facets
and themes of the Greek culture.
International students with disabilities should work closely with the Accessibility Unit
for Students with Disabilities of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a
team of professionals and volunteers striving to actively realize coequal access to
academic studies for students with different abilities and needs, through built
environmental modifications, Assistive Technologies and access services. An indicative
list of services provided by the Unit includes (a) access to interpersonal communication
with the members of the academic community, (b) access to the built environment of the
university, (c) access to the printed or electronic educational material, (d) access to the
board and the presentations in the classrooms, (e) access to the exams/tests, and (f)
access to information and web content.

Arguably, in the changing face of the global civilization of the 21st century, the religious element has
figured prominently. Notwithstanding voices from the previous century labelling religion as an endangered
social species in retreat from the public sphere, if not facing extinction altogether, a grand chain of 21st
century events points to a quite different reality, where theology and religion become more than relevant, to
say the least. In this chain of global occurrences one could easily recognize the September 11 attacks, the
Arabic Spring, the continuing economic crisis and mass migration to the West, the EU especially, from the
Middle East and the global South, the dilemmas attached to the decoding of the human genome sequence and
the multitude of bio-applications, the explosion of world communications spearheaded by the World Wide
Web, the exponential revolution of artificial intelligence and data management, and the interdisciplinary
effort towards a unified Theory of Everything encapsulating in a single and simple sentence humanity’s past,
present and future on Earth and in the heavens.
This global society in transition, finds Orthodox Christianity at the forefront setting the stage for a
comprehensive and socially sensitive theology for the life of the world drawing upon and keeping faith with
Orthodoxy’s two millennia of ecumenical culture and engagement.
All three postgraduate programmes are open to graduates from across the spectrum of disciplines
that meet the standards set out by the Faculty, while the Modern Greek Language Teaching Centre of the
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will support you in relation to our Greek language
requirements. By removing barriers pertaining to academic background, we aspire to inform future experts
in theology and religion through the principles of transformative learning, a process of knowledge built on
concrete theoretical foundations as well as on real-time practice, empathy and fieldwork experience.
All students attending our programmes will have full access to university services including the use
of university libraries, e-Class and Open Courses, while you will be eligible for funding through scholarships,
grants and partial employment. We particularly welcome engagement in student exchange programmes, like
the ERASMUS+, CIVIS and similar projects. International students with disabilities should also work closely
with the Accessibility Unit for Students with Disabilities of the National and Kapodistrian University of
Athens, a team of professionals and volunteers striving to make the difference for students in need.

SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL THEOLOGY AND THE STUDY OF RELIGION PROGRAMMES OF DOCTORAL STUDIES & POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020
Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Theology and the Study of Religion lead to the “PhD
in Theology” degree and last no less than three and no more than six academic years. The successful
writing and support of a doctoral thesis is the principal element during the second cycle of
postgraduate studies. Indeed, the doctoral thesis should be the outcome of extensive and original
research properly defended before a committee of seven Faculty members (from UoA or other
Universities). The PhD candidate is also required to work closely with his/her Supervisor (from the
Department of Social Theology and the Study of Religion) as well as the other two members of the
Supervising Committee (from the same and/or other departments of UoA, and/or other universities
in Greece and/or abroad) especially with regard to academic events and initiatives.
Following the values and principles of ethics and integrity in scientific research, endorsed by
the EU as well as internationally, our Department's PHD Programmes aim at seeding the next
academic generation of experts in theology and religious studies. In addition, our doctoral
programmes are meant to inspire academic scholarship and academic research of the highest calibre
through interdisciplinarity and internationalization. To train high qualified individuals, executives
and professionals, males and females, for service in public and private Education, in Social and Public
Welfare, in Civilization and Culture and in the Orthodox Church. To nurture the idea of mutual
understanding in our modern multicultural societies and the notion and the spirit of cooperation
between theological faculties and broader academic spheres of influence at domestic as well as
international level towards the promotion of a peacefull, ongoing and productive inter-Orthodox,
inter-Christian, interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
The main purpose of the PhD degree at our Department is to enable PhD
Candidates/Researchers to deepen their academic horizons through critical interpretive processing
and evaluation. To guide them so as to approach interpretatively and assess from a pioneeirng and
critical standpoint important and fundamental issues within the fields of theology and religion, such
Biblical studies, Dogmatis and Synodics, Canon Law, Liturgics and Christian Worship, Patristics,
Byzantine and modern ChristianTheology, Religious Education, Pastoral Studies, Religious Studies,
Philosophy of Religion, Bioethics and Sociology of Religions.
Prospective doctoral and/or post-doctoral applicants should contact and discuss with a
potential supervisor their research proposal prior to submitting a formal application.
Visiting students/researchers via ERASMUS+/CIVIS pathways are most welcome to join our
rigorous community under the guidelines of the Directorate of Public Relations and History of our
University.
