Volda University College is located in a small town, but our perspective is international. Out of nearly 4000 students,

more than 200 are international students.

Our four faculties offer a variety of courses in their subject area: Humanities and Education, Social Sciences and History, Art and Physical Education and Media and Journalism.

Our programmes in animation, broadcast journalism and documentary film production enjoy nationwide recognition. We also have long traditions in language, literature and educational studies.

Volda University College is exploring the potential of globalization and learning across borders. We are working towards making our courses more accessible, flexible and convenient for international

applicants, and for the increasing number of students enrolled in lifelong learning courses.

8 INTRODUCTION

LONG TRADITIONSThe university college was originally founded 150 years ago, as the first teacher training college in rural Norway. Today, it offers one PhD programme (joint degree with Molde University College), six Master’s programmes, more than 30 undergraduate programmes and about 450 courses. The studies offered are varied and include among others: media and communication, general and pre-school teacher training education, social sciences, child care, social planning and governance, as well as literature, linguis tics, math and science, history, arts and crafts, outdoor life and physical education, music and drama.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTVolda University College puts a lot of emphasis on research and development. The latter provides a solid foundation for the education offered in Volda. Strategic areas include media and journalism, cul-tural encounters, professional practices, edu cational research, welfare studies and applied arts. The nature of the research varies from individual programmes to applied development projects, conducted in close cooperation with end users.

MODERN FACILITIESFirst class IT equipment is easily accessible in any of

the numerous computer rooms on campus. There is a wireless network open to all students. The library is modern and offers access to books and periodicals from around the world. All around the campus there are fully equipped special purpose rooms such as radio and TV studios, drama rooms, group study and workshop rooms, an animation studio etc.

COMPACT CAMPUSAll the buildings are within five minutes walking distance of each other, and very close to the student accommodation. The sports hall is across the street from the university college buildings and gives students the opportunity to use the sports facilities (from swimming pool to fitness and bodybuilding studio, to an indoor sports hall).

INTERNATIONALVUC collaborates with over 150 international universities and research institutes around the world, through student exchanges, research, staff exchanges and more. All our students have the option of taking part of their degree at universities abroad, as well as being part of an international campus with over 200 international students.

STIVThe Student Parliament is the highest official student body at VUC. It is working continuously towards improving student life in Volda.

PANGAIAA unique office, home away from home for many students, Pangaia is the perfect place where you can drop in to relax, make friends, sign up for activities, events and trips, or play games. Pangaia is run by an international student trainee, under the umbrella of the International office. Some of the activities organized for students are international nights, karaoke events, day tours and hiking in the area, movie nights etc.

STUDENT HOUSE ROKKENIt is formally known as the gathering place for all the students on campus. Apart from the cafeteria, which serves food at student prices, the concert hall hosts a series of social events such as concerts, open mic nights, live sport broadcasting and various cultural programmes.

Volda University College is known for its lively academic and social environment. After a long day in the reading rooms, it is always amazing to go hiking in the

mountains, swim in the fjord or simply enjoy the wonders of nature.

PEIKESTOKKENThe student magazine keeps the community informed on everything that happens in Volda and its surroundings. All students on campus, regardless of their background, are invited to be part of the editorial team.

STUDENT-TVThe broadcast is made by students, for students. Whether you are interested in writing the script, being a news anchor, being cast in fiction movies or making news reports, being the official photographer or working on layout and graphics, you are welcome to become a part of the crew.

VOLDA STUDENT RADIOThe students’ own radio channel transmits every evening from 19:00. Stories, reports and news are made by students with the number one goal of transforming the relatively small radio station into the single most attractive student radio in Norway.

NATURAOne of the student organizations on campus, Natura, is responsible for organizing mountain hiking tours, surfing and cabin trips, as well as various other outdoor activities.

VSIThe students’ physical education organization (VSI) invites its members to work out in the sports hall, and offers handball, indoor football, indoor hockey, volleyball and badminton. Their members also have access to the swimming pool and bodybuilding and fitness facilities.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAThe only symphony orchestra in the country connected to a university college has a broad repertoire of popular music, symphonic music and church works.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CHOIRDo you like to sing? You are warmly invited to become a member of the college choir.

KRIKOffers an active environment, with a strong focus on Christian values and a love of physical education.

VOKSVolda Christian Student Organization wishes to be including and an actor in the integration process of student life in Volda.

BUDDY WEEKEvery semester many new and eager students meet in Volda. Some are newcomers, others are back for their second, third or fourth year in Volda. The main buddy week is organized at the beginning of the academic year, in August. It is marked by many outdoor

activities, competitions, games and introductory meetings. For the international students arriving in Volda for the spring semester, a smaller welcome programme is organized in January.

INTERNATIONAL WEEKThe International Office organizes an International Day every February with guests from all over the world. Workshops, seminars and guest lectures are held all week.

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVALNorway’s oldest and biggest annual documentary film festival attracts many national and international participants and fans. Between fifty and sixty films are presented during the festival. Producers, students and audiences enjoy days of quality documentary cinema.

ANIMATION VOLDAThe university college has a nationally and internationally renowned animation department. It educates some of the most creative and skilled animators in Norway. The Animation Festival offers the opportunity to take part in the creative atmosphere in Volda, with national and international participation. The programme is spiced with workshops, world premieres, and distinguished guests from the world of animation.

ISUInternational Student Union at VUC embraces diversity and welcomes all students, both international and Norwegian, to its activities. ISU Norway is committed to the social, academic and political interests of all international students studying in Norway. It is an independent, democratic, non-profit, non-partisan organization run by and for international students and interested Norwegians.

With a population of over 8000 inhabitants and a student body of approximately 4000 students (about 2000 on-campus students), Volda is a charming town in the county of Møre og Romsdal. Although the main employers are the university college and the local hospital, Volda is known for its traditional occupations of farming, fishing, forestry and aquaculture.

Volda is famous for its strong cultural heritage and academic traditions. The center is a charming area, located right on the shores of Voldafjorden. There are many old wooden buildings - both commercial and residential - but at the town’s heart is a beautiful stone church, built in the 1930’s.

THE SUNNMØRE ALPSThe beautiful alpine mountain areas in the vicinity of Volda are called the Sunnmøre Alps, and stun nature lovers. Some of the peaks reach as high as 1700 meters straight up from the fjord, of which the most well-known are Slogen, Kolåstinden, Hornindalsrokken, Skårasalen and Råna. The Sunnmøre Alps offer unique terrain for hiking, and are visited by large numbers of tourists in both summer and winter.

GEIRANGERGeiranger is the jewel in the crown of the Norwegian

fjords. It is so unique that it has been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It is a fairy-tale land-scape with its majestic, snow-covered mountaintops, wild and beautiful waterfalls, lush green vegetation and the deep, blue fjord (geiranger.no).

ÅLESUNDApproximately 90 minutes away from Volda, you find the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund. Mount Aksla, with the viewpoints Fjellstua and Kniven, is one of Ålesund’s biggest attractions. The views of the town, the lovely islands and the majestic Sunnmøre Alps further inland are simply fantastic.

GETTING HEREVolda is 50 minutes away from Oslo by plane from the capital to the local airport, Hovden. There are several daily flights to and from Oslo and Bergen, and buying a youth ticket is the most affordable option. Also, flights from major cities in Norway to Ålesund (Vigra) are available daily, but keep in mind the cost of the extra bus trip from Vigra airport to Volda (wideroe.no, sas.no, norwegian.no). A more traditional way of getting to Volda is by bus. The regular night bus from Oslo takes 10 hours to reach Volda, but you are guaranteed a seat on any departure. (nettbuss.no).

Situated on the western coast of Norway, Volda is surrounded by alpine peaks, fjords and sea.

Camille Hostache and Coline Martinez from the University of Corsica Pascal Paoli, France, are studying English language and literature in Volda because they are

interested in learning the origins, variations and rules of English.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

in relation to social class and gender, and linguistic variation and change.

MEET BOTH FOREIGN AND REGIONAL STUDENTSTeaching takes the form of lectures, exercises, group work and individual work. Working in groups provides a good learning environment, and makes it easier to get to know the other students.

– We often work and reflect in groups and it allows us to share opinions and knowledge, and to meet both foreign and regional students. The teachers pay a lot of attention to us students and are always available to help. The study atmosphere in Volda is very pleasant.

At their home university, they study International and Regional Languages, Literature and Civilization. In Volda, they wanted to expand their knowledge of the English language and chose to study grammar and sociolinguistics.

– In Grammar and Lexicology, we study syntax, nuances, rules and conjugation of the language. In Sociolinguistics, the lecturer teaches the different variations, origins and uses of languages. We often do exercises in class and sometimes we have assignments at home.

Sociolinguistics pays particular attention to English dialects and Standard English, language variation

Theology student Sol Grosskopf chose to study in Volda because the university college offered an academic programme that matched

what he wanted to study - Norwegian and Religion.

NORWEGIAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE

In the course Religion and Culture in Norway, he gained knowledge about the most central aspects of the development of Christianity in Norway since the Middle Ages and onwards.

– We learned about the history and development of Christianity and the pluralistic environment of the many different faiths today. Lutheranism was a central focus, as it was foundational in the formation of today’s Norway. Throughout the class we learned about many of the great religious movements that brought about change to the people and culture of Norway.

TEACHERS WITH DIFFERENT SPECIALIZATIONSThe course addresses the major development of religion in Norway, from homogeneity to multi-culturalism.

– The class was taught by several teachers who all specialized in certain areas, including early history of Christianity in Norway, Lutheranism, Norway today, and specific topics like the development of religious freedom in the Norwegian constitution.

RELIGION FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVESThere were students from Norway, other parts of Europe and the United States taking the subject.

– The class was very interesting as we could discuss religion from so many different perspectives. While the class was mostly lectures, there was always time for discussions and questions to further develop your understanding of the topics learned that day.

ARTS

He is studying Visual Communication at Volda University College together with Miriam Šťastná from his home university.

– I am studying Visual Communication at Tomas Bata University as well, and I thought it would be great to see a different approach to the same area of study in Volda. Here we are learning the basic knowledge of visual grammar, which is actually really useful for me because my study program at home has a different focus. In addition, I have to work on my final bachelor’s thesis, and I wanted to be here to find inspiration for my project, says Miriam.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL FORMA central topic in this course is working with two-dimensional form using different tools, materials and techniques. It focuses on formal aesthetic

knowledge, where form, colour and signs are an important part of the course.

– We did our first assignment about structures. We were told to observe and study compositional elements and structures in different forms of art, and then we were supposed to come up with our own. Since I like working with typography and graphic design, I am always looking forward to new views, principles or techniques, says Martin.

EXPERIENCED TEACHER Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, individual problem solving and self-study.

– The study environment is really good. Our teacher is experienced and her teaching process is inter e-sting and easy to understand, says Martin.

the Czech Republic.


Miquel Rial Sole is studying communication and journalism at his home university, in Spain. In Volda, he found a course

where he can combine his studies with his interest for nature.

SPORTS AND NATURE

Miquel is taking the course Outdoor Media Production. The course has a special focus on film, photo and other new audiovisual expressions. The students work on communicating various concepts and representations from workshop locations.

– We learn how to create good videos outside. We take advantage of amazing places that we visit and the nature which surrounds us; doing reports, web blogs, movies and all kind of audiovisual projects.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSEThe course is interdisciplinary and includes students from the Media programmes and the Outdoor Education programmes.

– We work in small groups and our videos are mainly about outdoor life, but with different purposes for each activity.

OUTSIDE LESSONSThe students go on three field trips lasting several days during the course, which makes for a very different study environment than what Miquel is used to from his home university.

– We have the lessons outside. I learn a lot from my four teachers because they are so experienced. You can talk to them about any doubts you may have, and they try to help you as much as possible.

– I study media because I am interested in society and its people. Planning and producing media content is mostly about understanding people,

so this is my creative way to work with this subject.

MEDIA STUDIES

Kristin Bauer studies Multimedia Production at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, in Germany. She is taking two semesters in Volda.

– Here I am able to attend only two courses per semester, immersing myself in the topics and devoting more time to each of them. .

INSIGHTS INTO NORWEGIAN CULTURE AND SOCIETYOne of the subjects Kristin chose to study in Volda was Strategic Design.

– I actually did not apply for the course, but atten-ded the introductory workshop as a visitor. The

work shop was so much fun, that I changed my Learning Agreement at once. The teachers were really supportive, offered us interesting insights into Norwegian culture and society, and showed us what good advertisements could be like.

REAL CUSTOMERS In Strategic Design, students work mainly in groups to solve various assignments, and in some projects they work with real customers.

– The overall approach of the course was to figure out a strategy that would solve a company’s problems. We worked with Ålesund Fotball Klubb (a Norwegian top division football team) which made the challenge even more interesting.

Cold War 1975-1990 (15 ECTS)


– I had experience in filming, but I also wanted to learn how to take good pictures. I bought my first DSLR camera the day before I left for Norway. Now I am really enjoying taking photos,

especially in such a beautiful environment as here in Volda.

PHOTOGRAPHY

– In each lecture, we learn about different situations and techniques more theoretically, and then we have two weeks to work practically with those particular situations and do the assignment. In lectures, we also analyze photos of the previous week’s assignments. In a semester, we have 19 assignments, creating a portfolio for the final exam.

EXPERIENCED PROFESSORViesturs thinks the study environment in the course is very good.

– The lectures take place in a well-equipped audi-torium, and we have access to computer labs, a TV studio and good photo equipment at any time. The professor is experienced and a colourful character, so the lectures are very exciting.

Viesturs Leitholds from Latvia had no experience with photography before he chose to take the course Photo for Media at Volda University College. At his home university Business School Turiba in Riga, he studies advertising.

– I chose to study in Volda because the courses are related to my study programme, the beautiful nature here and because a student who was here last year recommended it.

PORTFOLIO FOR FINAL EXAMThe course introduces the physical and optical laws behind photographic image production, with practical exercises designed to explore the problems and benefits connected to these facts. The course explores the fundamental rules regarding composition of visual elements and the communicative effects of photographic images.

Czech animation student Pavla Michálková was an Erasmus student in Volda in 2011, studying Animation and Norwegian language for Erasmus students.

Now she has returned to continue her studies in Volda.

ANIMATION

– I grew up with animated fairy-tales and my imagination has grown with reading stories. Still I have to learn more about animation. That is why I am here.

ANIMATION FILM PRODUCTION Pavla has a degree in Classical Animation from Tomas Bata University in Zlin, and is now continuing her studies in Volda with Animation Film Production.

– I have two courses, which amount to 60 credits per year. The first course is Storytelling and Dramaturgy. Here I am learning how to tell animated stories, film editing, and the role of sound and music in animation. The second one is Directing and Producing. In this course I am learning the whole production process of an animated short film, from idea and concept development to script writing, storyboarding, editing and sound design; the role of the producer and the director.

FRIENDLY STUDY ENVIRONMENTMany of the animation teachers have international experience with the animation industry.

– The teachers are very kind and professional, and the equipment is high-level. We also have easy access to the school, and we can work in the evening, at night or during the weekends if we want to.

ANIMATION VOLDALast time Pavla was studying in Volda, in 2013, she was at the animation film festival Animation Volda, which celebrated a hundred years of Norwegian animation that year. The festival is hosted every year by students in Volda .

– This is the place to be if you want to be a good animator.

– I chose to study Social Studies because I think it is important to understand the circumstances we are living in. Everyone’s life is determined by different factors

like society and history, and having knowledge about these matters makes it easier to communicate with people from different backgrounds.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Stefanie Jürgensen is studying Public Relations at her home university, Fachhochschule Kiel. In Volda, she studied European Union and Regional Development.

– It helped me gain a more many-sided view of life inside, as well as outside, the European Union. To learn how Norway regards the EU was an interesting field of study for me, as I was born and grew up in the EU. I got to understand more about all the difficulties the European community is facing, but also what huge potential a project connecting so many different people and countries holds. It motivated me to reflect on to what massive extent the creation of the European Union affect our lifes in Europe.

INFORMAL STUDY ENVIRONMENT In Volda, Stefanie experienced a less formal and more personal study environment than she was used to.

– The study groups are small and I feel that the teachers and the staff care a lot about every single student. It is in my view a very harmonic, profitable and personal study environment, which I enjoyed a lot.

STAYED A SEMESTER LONGERStefanie has always been interested in Scandinavia, and when she decided to study abroad, she heard about the partner university in Norway.

– I just decided to try Volda University College and went there without knowing a lot about it, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I had not been to Norway before I came to Volda, but I liked it from the first day, and stayed one semester longer than I intended. Although Volda is a small place, its student community makes it very special.

first one established outside a major city, the Egset library was the first rural library in Norway and the local newspaper was established as early as 1810. Our area is also viewed as the birthplace of Nynorsk, the second official language of Norway.

I would have to come back as soon as I could.

ONE-YEAR COURSE IN NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE

Valentin Gatlan went back to Romania to finish his bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, and then applied for the one-year course in Norwegian Language and Civilization.

– It was an open door for me and for my future academic and social plans.

INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PREPARATIONThe course aims to give students the knowledge and skills necessary for studies at Norwegian colleges and universities. The emphasis lies on giving students a good general proficiency in the Norwegian language.

– The course is an intensive preparation in Norwegian

language. We have classes every day, which prepare us for our future studies. The class has students of many nationalities, which makes for an interesting study environment. The teachers are eager to teach us, and their patience shows it.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN JOURNALISMAfter his studies in Norwegian language, Valentin plans to take a master’s degree in Journalism in Norwegian.

– Beyond the academic advantages that the course offers, it is also an opportunity to integrate better and faster in the Norwegian society.
