Renaissance An art movement in Europe from the 14th to the 17th century. It is marked by arevival of classical (Greek and Roman) influence with an emphasis on art,literature, and science.

linear perspective A form of perspective in which parallel lines seem to converge on one or morevanishing points to give the illusion of depth and distance; also called geometricperspective.

horizon line In life, the line where the sky and earth seem to meet. In linear perspective, a flatline across the canvas on which the vanishing point is located.

perspective lines In linear perspective, straight, parallel lines that seem to meet at a vanishing pointon the horizon line.

vanishing point The point at which parallel lines seem to meet and disappear on the horizon line.

single-pointperspective

A technique in which a single vanishing point is used to create the illusion of depthon a flat surface.

multiple-pointperspective

A technique in which two or more vanishing points are used to create the illusion ofdepth on a flat surface.

aerial perspective A painting technique in which an artist adjusts color hues and reduces the size ofobjects to make them seem farther away; also called atmospheric perspective.

foreground The part of a painting or other flat artwork that appears closest to the viewer.

background The part of a painting or other flat artwork that appears farthest away from theviewer.

value In art, a color's brightness or dullness, as well as shadows and contrasts created withcolor.

tint The combination of a color with white to make it lighter; the opposite of shade.

shade The combination of a color with black to make it darker; the opposite of tint.

Leonardo daVinci

(1452 - 1519) A Florentine mathematician, inventor, architect, and artist from theRenaissance. He most notably added scientific observation to the artist's toolbox.

Major works: Vitruvian Man, ca. 1487; The Last Supper, ca. 1495; Mona Lisa, ca. 1503.

contrast In art, the difference between one extreme and another, such as light and dark orsmooth and textured.

chiaroscuro A combination of the Italian words for light and dark. In painting, the term refers to thecontrast between light and dark.

sfumato Italian for smoke. A technique created by Leonardo da Vinci in which layers of paintcreate gentle transitions between colors and objects.

(1909 - 1994) An American art critic associated with Modern art in the United States -in particular, the Abstract Expressionist movement and the work of Jackson Pollock.
