HOW MUCH FREEDOM DO YOU HAVE IN SELECTING THE THEME FOR EACH DISPLAY HOME?

I’m lucky to have the freedom to propose a theme for every display home we create. It’s a privilege to be trusted by the Display Team to come up with the best vision in-line with the requirements of the design brief. In the design brief section, it usually only contains four words: “Leave this to Joseph.”

DISPLAY HOME INSPIRATION

HOW DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR EACH DISPLAY HOME?

Inspiration is all around us. It can sometimes be found in unusual places and unexpected ways; something as simple as having a coffee and listening to music.

It is also true that inspiration can be fleeting and sometimes difficult to find when you need it. Personally, I plan ahead by making creativity a part of my daily routine. I will then put together a collection of inspiration for each display home that I create.

WE ASK JOSEPH CALASARA, WEBB AND BROWN-NEAVES’

INNOVATION AND NEW PRODUCT DESIGNER ABOUT HIS INSPIRATION.

HOW MUCH DOES THE LOCATION OF THE DISPLAY HOME INFLUENCE THE DESIGN?

Location plays a major part in designing a display home. We need to understand how the location affects the outcome of the product by analysing its visual importance, demographic, topography and street culture. The location also inspires me to design a display home that complements the vernacular architecture and streetscapes of the locality.

IS THERE A DESIGN THAT IS PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE FOR YOU? WHY DOES IT STAND OUT?

The Kuro display home is particularly memorable for me. Aside from the home’s theme, which is a combination of Japanese aesthetic and Scandinavian raw functionality, the attention to detail is what makes this house special. Standout features include the space planning and layout which incorporates the design theory of compression and expansion, the custom details, the seamless staircase and balustrade, the kitchen design and the Zen garden.

BIOPHILIA IN ARCHITECTURE: INCORPORATING NATURE INTO DESIGN

BIOPHILIA IS ABOUT INTEGRATING NATURE AND OTHER LIFE FORMS INTO DESIGN. IT ENHANCES THE CONNECTION TO THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT TO IMPROVE OVERALL WELLBEING AND EMOTIONAL COMFORT.

“It is a proven fact that biophilic design improves overall health and wellbeing of the occupant,” Joseph said. “With an overload of technology, biophilic design will create an environment of total relaxation.”

And with other benefits including improved productivity, increased employee engagement and reduced stress levels, it is no wonder biophilic design is making its way into the workplace.

According to Joseph, recent changes in technology have had a significant influence on the rise of this architectural trend.

“Biophilic design is quite a common concept in the architectural world, but it is only now becoming more noticeable due to industrial and technological overload that reshapes how we interact with nature.”

“It isn’t just popular in residential design, its seen more and more in buildings and specifically in workplaces where people spend most of their time.”

Sustainability and energy efficiency are popular topics of discussion in the modern age and are becoming more important in the architectural world. Biophilic design considers this by incorporating sustainability into certain areas of the design, in unique and unconventional ways.

“BY ENSURING ADEQUATE ACCESS TO SUN AND PASSIVE VENTILATION THROUGHOUT THE HOME, BIOPHILIC DESIGN MINIMISES ENERGY USE AND REDUCES GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS.”“Environmental care and awareness are some of the most common considerations in the increasing demand for incorporating sustainability into residential design,” he said. “The sun, natural lighting and ventilation, water and plants are essentials in achieving the essence of biophilic design.”

Architects have incorporated biophilia into design, creating a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment.

We spoke to WB Innovation and New Product Designer, Joseph Calasara, about this growing architectural trend.

“For me, Biophilic design is not just looking at nature from the window, but integrating nature and other life forms into the design solution,” he said. “It enhances the connectivity of the occupant to the natural environment and the design aesthetics improve overall wellbeing and emotional comfort.”

Through the increasing popularity and use of technology, we are seeing a decrease in our interaction with nature. Incorporating nature into our lives has never been so important, with long hours at the office and longer commute times preventing us from spending enough time in the natural world.

Spending most of our time in a built environment can have negative effects on the human mind and body, and it is important to incorporate nature into our lives as they are.

Incorporating plants, trees, light, air, or water into the home can have significant benefits for the resident, including improved mental wellbeing and improved physical health.

WHAT ARE SOME KEY ELEMENTS OFTEN INCLUDED IN ZEN GARDENS? Zen gardens emphasise naturalness and simplicity. Rocks, sand and water features are the key elements of these gardens. Bringing them together creates a work of art and draws the viewer into a state of contemplation.

WHY IS THIS STYLE SO APPEALING?

Zen gardens are intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature. They

provide a tranquil environment which is what makes this type of garden so

appealing.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PLANTS AT THE KURO AND WHY THEY WERE CHOSEN? The planting palettes are carefully selected to complement the overall outcome. From a selection of bamboo species, feature trees and ground covers, we work closely with our landscape architect to deliver a perfect Zen atmosphere. To provide an outstanding street presence, the front moon-shaped sunken garden was planted with a cluster of Forest Pansy trees and mature Chinese Elms to frame the façade nicely.

The swimming pool is surrounded with lines of nicely trimmed bamboos and a Japanese maple located at the end of the timber bridge. The rest of the planting is a combination of subtropical plants with outstanding textures and contrasts.

TAKE US THROUGH THE GARDEN SPACE AT THE KURO DISPLAY HOME BY WB.The outdoor area is separated into four spaces. The front yard features a sunken moon garden and a deck entry with integrated boulders. The Zen garden next to the alfresco has an organic-shaped stepper that is gradually raised to create circular seating. This leads to a moon gate near the secret lawn sanctuary. Located centrally is a swimming pool that is visible from almost all areas of the home.

5 TIPS TO SOFTEN AN OUTDOOR SPACE THAT MIGHT FEEL MODERN AND STERILE

1. Add a few large feature pots and fill

with large plants.

2. Add a garden sculpture or water feature to create a focal point and to

cool the space.

3. Try growing a few climbers and

creeper plants to keep you cool.

4. Provide a little bit of colour in either planting or outdoor furnishing to lift cold space and bring warmth and

cheer.

5. Hanging plants and hanging baskets can be a good addition too.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE BUILDING JOURNEY?

One of our favourite parts was seeing our home come together during the building process but the early and late stages (especially moving in) were the best. Webb & Brown-Neaves understood what we wanted and seeing a drawing of our home for the first time was amazing.

We were very lucky to have a great supervisor who kept us well informed. Our Client Liaison officer also made things very easy. We have our jobs and three kids, so it was certainly a busy period, but the Webb & Brown-Neaves team supported us the whole time.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO BUILD?

We had looked for an established home to give us more space for our growing family but we couldn’t find anything we liked in the right location. The homes that were in our price range all needed a lot of work. We had renovated our last home since we bought it 14 years prior so in the end we decided to knockdown and rebuild.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE HOME AND WHY?

There are so many favourite parts. We love all of the different living spaces we have. As well as the main living area, we have a separate TV room for the kids and the deck, balcony and sitting room upstairs give us so many places to relax and everyone can have their own space. The kitchen is also great - we are enjoying cooking and chatting to the kids around the island bench. The bathroom feels like I’m in a hotel with the freestanding bath and marble-look tiles.

WITH A GROWING FAMILY COMES THE NEED FOR A LARGER HOUSE. KNOCKDOWN AND REBUILD CLIENTS BIANCA AND LEON GUTHRIE SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THEIR BUILDING JOURNEY.

TOP BUILDING TIPS FROM THE GUTHRIE FAMILY:

1. “DO YOUR RESEARCH AND KNOW WHAT YOU WANT AS WELL AS KNOW THE BUILDERS’ REPUTATION AND WHAT THEY SPECIALISE IN. WE HAD FRIENDS WHO BUILT WITH WEBB & BROWN-NEAVES SO WE HAD CONFIDENCE FROM THAT POINT OF VIEW THAT THEY COULD PROVIDE US WITH A GOOD QUALITY HOME AND ALSO GREAT SERVICE AFTERWARDS.”

2. “THE PRESTART PROCESS IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND THIS IS THE TIME TO CONSIDER EVERYTHING FROM POWER POINTS AND LIGHTING TO A GAS OUTLET FOR THE BARBEQUE. TIME SPENT HERE ASKING LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND DOING RESEARCH WILL GET YOU WHAT YOU WANT AND MEAN LESS STRESS AND LESS EXTRA MONEY ALONG THE WAY.”

WHAT INCLUSIONS WERE IMPORTANT TO YOU?

We wanted the house to be as finished as possible so having the painting, lighting and air-conditioning included was really important. We also wanted some different things in terms of windows, lighting and layout. WB were flexible with the specifications and also the design. We loved the floorboards on the WB display homes so we decided to use their flooring contractor.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BUDDING HOME BUILDER?

Do your research and know what you want as well as know the builder’s reputation and what they specialise in. We had friends who built with WB so we had confidence from that point of view in that they had a good quality home and also great service afterwards. Being our first build, this was really important. Leon is in the building industry, but it was still a steep learning curve for us, so it was really important to use a builder with experience and quality builds behind their name. When I asked our Building & Design Consultant, Kim Gartrell what we were getting for our money he said, ‘peace of mind’ and he was right.

HOW IMPORTANT WAS THE PRESTART STAGE TO YOU?

The Prestart stage is important. This is the time to consider everything from power points and lighting to a gas outlet for the BBQ. Time spent here asking lots of questions and doing research will get you what you want and mean less stress and less extra money along the way. We still had variations but most things were already considered and in some cases we actually got money back. We’ve been living here for a year and there’s nothing we need to change. WB helped us make sure we thought of everything.

THE PALM SPRINGS AND THE RISE OF THE FUR BABY

IN AUSTRALIA AND AROUND THE WORLD, PETS ARE BECOMING MORE POPULAR AND VALUED, OFTEN INFLUENCING FINANCIAL DECISIONS.

Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, with 62% of households owning a pet according to the Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA). With a pet population of 24 million in 2018, the fur baby is on the rise and impacting our lives in more ways than one.

Australians spend $12.2 billion a year on their fur babies according to the PIAA, with the RSPCA estimating the average cost of owning a dog to be around $13,000 over the course of its lifetime. With two-thirds of households regarding their pet as part of the family, it is no wonder home design is changing to suit the needs of the fur baby.

In our latest Mosman Park display home, The Palm Springs, the furry member of the family gets their own dedicated ‘pet place’ complete with a custom-designed bed and cabinetry which includes a slide-out food drawer and ample space to store pet items.

We spoke to WB Innovation and New Product Designer, Joseph Calasara about his inspiration behind the pet zone in The Palm Springs and his predictions around the impact this will have on the future of home design.

“The Palm Springs pet zone was designed to make the most of the space,” he said. “There is a dedicated space for a pet which will create a more organised area and hide clutter. Located in the laundry, it is the perfect spot for cleaning and washing your dog with direct access to the outside.”

Pets have become highly valued and are often considered a member of the family. They have become incredibly important when making purchasing decisions such as where to live and when building a home and Joseph believes the impact on the future of home design will be exponential.

WHETHER YOU’RE A READING FANATIC, NEED A SPACE TO WORK AT HOME OR ARE WONDERING HOW TO MAKE USE OF THAT DISUSED SPARE ROOM, A HOME LIBRARY MIGHT BE FOR YOU.

In the digital age, the online world captures our attention more often than many of us would like to admit and books are often pushed aside. But nothing compares to the exciting world of storytelling that draws us in with every turn of the page.

Not to mention, the incredible benefits growing up surrounded by books can have. A 2018 study conducted by the Australian National University of 160,000 adults from 31 countries found that more books in the home was linked to higher proficiency in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and information communication technology.

The study concluded that growing up with fewer books in the home results in below average literacy levels. And it seems that 80 is the golden number. A child growing up with at least 80 books in their home will have greater literacy and numeracy levels in adulthood.

SURROUNDED BY WORDS: THE POWER OF THE HOME LIBRARY

24 25STYLE MAGAZINE BY WB

A home library is often a place to relax and unwind, so getting the design right is highly important. We spoke to our Innovation and New Product Designer Joseph Calasara to get his take on designing your very own home library.

“A home library is a cosy space that brings an instant sense of calm,” he said. “It’s a place where you can keep a record of who you are and celebrate your history and joy of reading, showcasing collections, hobbies and other personal interests.”

When it comes to styling your home library, Joseph’s biggest piece of advice is to think about the purpose of the space. “Is it a space for your children or a more formal space for adults?” he asked. “Or perhaps a dual purpose of both reading and studying. Identifying the purpose of the space will help inspire the overall theme and mood of the room.”

A room dedicated to reading is not just for the avid bookworm. Joseph believes a home library can work in any home. “A home library can work in any household whether you are a serious reader and collector or just love having a cosy corner to enjoy away from the busy household.”

“It’s a multi-functional space that can accommodate a study nook or flexible space to conduct a small home office.”

“A HOME LIBRARY IS A COSY SPACE THAT BRINGS AN INSTANT SENSE OF CALM.”

DEVOTED TO DESIGN: JEN FARR

“We were originally going to build The Moda until I found The Eden featured in a New Homes lift out in the paper.” she said. “We decided to visit and amazingly, it was almost the exact same layout as the last home we built with Webb & Brown-Neaves in 2015, so we knew the design worked well for us and our needs.”

Having built with Webb & Brown-Neaves previously, choosing to build with them again was a no-brainer. “They are a well-respected, trusted name in the building industry and the design and decoration of their display homes is superior.”

Her fascination with design has led her to complete her second Webb & Brown-Neaves home which was completed in February 2020.

“My favourite part of the building journey is looking for the perfect design and tweaking it to suit my needs,” she said. “I love ending up with a brand-new house designed and decorated just the way I want it. A home that no one has lived in before!”

Jen is currently building her second Webb & Brown-Neaves home in Perth’s Southern suburb of Salter Point with a replica of WB’s Display Home, The Eden.

WITH A PASSION FOR INTERIOR DESIGN AND A DEDICATION TO HER INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT, SECOND-TIME WEBB & BROWN-NEAVES CLIENT, JEN FARR TRULY ENJOYS THE BUILDING PROCESS.

Jen and her husband Clinton are downsizers, with their last home being built on a 900-square metre block. “We definitely needed a smaller block. Our last home was way too big for just the two of us and required a lot of maintenance. Our new home will be built on a 485-square metre block, which will be perfect for us.”

Jen has a passion for interior design, which started at a young age. She runs a well-known Instagram page, @designdevotee, with a healthy following in excess of 50,000, dedicated to her love of all things design. “I have loved interior design my entire life. When I was about 10-years-old, I used to make two-storey doll houses out of shoe boxes and sew curtains and bedlinen for the furniture I made for it.”

JEN’S SIX BUILDING TIPS: 1. Have a realistic budget, as extras you add to your build will raise the cost.

2. Consider the finish of the house, including flooring, window treatments, lighting and landscaping.

3. I would always choose to build a display home now as you know exactly how the design will turn out and what you’re getting for your money.

4. Read all documentation very carefully and go through it several times to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

5. Do all your research early in the process to ensure you know exactly what taps, basins and wall colours will best suit the style of home you are building.

6. I would suggest asking for help from an interior designer so you end up with a cohesive look that suits your style and the way you live.

WHICH INCLUSIONS WERE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?

High ceilings, plenty of light, top quality products and highly skilled trades. The latest technology was available and there were highly qualified and helpful staff who offered advice and guidance at all stages of the build. From Sales, Finance, Design and Prestart, everyone we dealt with was helpful and knowledgeable throughout the building journey.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE BUILDING JOURNEY?

Seeing the finished product emerge over the months after all the planning and organising and the delight at how well it all worked out.

WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT BUILDING A HOME?

Waiting to move in!

HAVING NOW BUILT YOUR OWN HOME WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE ABOUT TO EMBARK ON THE BUILDING JOURNEY?

We were lucky that we knew exactly what we wanted and are both decisive people. It is important to do your research and have a very clear idea of your needs and wants. Make up your mind but listen to the advice of the experts. Once decisions have been made, stick to them.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BUILD NEW INSTEAD OF BUYING ESTABLISHED?

After selling our property in Yallingup, we looked for a house in the areas we wanted to live in but couldn’t find anything that fitted our requirements. We had some building experience once with WB and decided that, as we knew exactly what we wanted, we would build a home specifically to suit us.

DOES THE HOME REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY?

We both wanted to live by the ocean but still be close to family, the golf club and shops. We wanted a home which would be modern, functional and suit our individual wants and needs with a view, taking us into our ‘old age’. The home is warm in winter and cool in summer, with a manageable outdoor area and indoor spaces for all seasons. Jon loves to have somewhere to ‘tinker’ and we both like plenty of storage.

DID ANY ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS COME INTO PLAY?

Being close to the ocean meant the climate is cooler in summer and warmer in winter, although the winds can be very strong. The home is designed to make the most of winter sun and summer breezes together with solar heating and hot water plus in-floor heating for bathrooms.

DOWNSIZERS KERRY AND JON MUIR MOVED FROM YALLINGUP TO WATERMANS BAY AND HAVE NOT LOOKED BACK.

“WE WANTED A HOME WHICH WOULD BE MODERN, FUNCTIONAL AND SUIT OUR INDIVIDUAL WANTS AND NEEDS WITH A VIEW, TAKING US INTO OUR “OLD AGE.”

“Often the biggest concern for people with technology is the learning curve. Smart home platforms remove the learning curve because regardless of make or model, all devices are controlled the same way from a single, uniform interface” said Mr Gilmore.

Smart home technology is on the rise and can be customised to your home exactly how you want it. When building a home with Webb & Brown-Neaves, you have access to Intelligent Home’s range of home technology solutions, with the main goal to make your home safer, smarter and more user-friendly.

“A good smart home should tie together multiple separate units like TVs, air conditioning systems, music and access like the garage door.

Also, being able to truly automate your home so that things can happen on a schedule or routine like music playing, TVs turning off as you come and go, even the ability for the air conditioning to be automatically controlled based on the climate outside the home.” says Mr Gilmore.

Intelligent Home offers a range of different home technologies, including smart wiring for smart TVs and improved Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras, a security alarm system and speakers throughout the home, all controlled through a platform called Control 4. But perhaps the most exciting and fun is the voice integration with Amazon’s Alexa.

“Amazon, Google and Apple all have great voice assistants and when you add a solid smart home to the mix you add a whole new level of ease to controlling your smart home. A simple command like ‘Alexa, turn on party mode’ gets the music started inside and out playing your favourite playlist at your preferred volume.”

And smart home technology doesn’t just make life easier, it also enhances the overall aesthetic of your home.

“The biggest aesthetic improvement comes from the reduction of visible equipment. No more remotes on the coffee table, less devices in the living room cabinet, less controllers mounted to the walls.”

HOW INTELLIGENT IS YOUR HOME?WE SPOKE WITH JAMIE GILMORE, SYSTEM INTEGRATOR AT INTELLIGENT HOME ABOUT SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY AND IT’S PREDICTED DEVELOPMENT IN THE FUTURE.

“SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY IS ON THE RISE AND CAN BE CUSTOMISED TO YOUR HOME EXACTLY HOW YOU WANT IT.”

Kevin and Natalie Harding built their dream home in Woodlands with Webb & Brown-Neaves. Completed in late 2018, The Harding Family are completely in love with their new home and lifestyle, agreeing that this is their ‘forever home.’

With two sons aged 17 and 21, Kevin and Natalie had outgrown their previous home and were looking to upsize. They had looked at established homes in the area but couldn’t find exactly what they wanted. “We were looking at established homes in Woodlands and the surrounding areas,” Natalie said. “We found that the houses we liked still had one or two features that we were not 100% happy with.”

“WE THEN STARTED LOOKING AT DISPLAY HOMES AND AFTER RESEARCH, FOUND THAT BUYING A BLOCK WAS A MUCH BETTER OPTION AND THEN BEING ABLE TO BUILD A HOME THAT HAD EVERYTHING WE WANTED RATHER THAN A HOME THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAD DESIGNED AND BUILT.”

Natalie and Kevin always knew they wanted to live in Woodlands. Natalie grew up in the suburb with family living nearby. “Woodlands has always been an area we absolutely love,” they said. “We have wonderful neighbours, our son’s school is within walking distance and we love walking to the nearby lake.”

“Natalie’s parents also built with Webb & Brown-Neaves many years ago and still live in the same house and many of her parent’s neighbours also have Webb & Brown-Neaves homes,” Kevin said. “We wanted to build with a company we could trust and we knew could build us our dream home to a high standard.”

Kevin and Natalie wanted a floor plan that gave their sons the separation they needed but also allowed for family time. Their living area is their favourite, being their ‘family zone.’

“We love the whole house,” they said. “It is our ‘forever home’ but our favourite zone is the living, dining and kitchen area. We love the feel, open layout and we can be cooking whilst enjoying family time talking, watching TV and also being able to look out onto our wonderful alfresco area and the pool.”

As first-time builders, Kevin and Natalie weren’t sure what to expect, but they were in safe hands with the Webb & Brown-Neaves team.

“Given we were new to the whole building experience, the team at Webb & Brown-Neaves supported us through the process from the start, right through the building stage and to the end.” Natalie said.

“I couldn’t thank Webb & Brown-Neaves enough for finally giving us our dream home.” said Natalie.
