1) About you General information about you.

2) Your career An updated CV to upload to your registration, saved in any of the following formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt

3) Images You may upload up to 10 images of your work but these must include details of chosen works. Images must be uploaded in the following formats: JPEG 72dpi – we suggest a pixel dimension of between 1200px to 1800px. Whilst larger images can be accepted, upload times will vary depending upon your internet connection, if your internet connection is slow, upload may time-out. If you are submitting moving image works then please provide details for online links such as Vimeo or YouTube in the description area.

All image captions need to have: • Title • Medium • Year produced • Dimensions (width x height x depth – cm) • A description of the work written with a maximum of 1700 characters (approx. 200-250 words)

4) About your work There are three sections, each limited to 1700 characters (approx. 200-250 words) where we ask about your work 1:Howdoesyourworkfitthecriteriasetoutbythe Jameel Prize. 2: Please tell us about your creative practice. 3: Please provide us with any additional information about your work that is relevant to your registration and not included on your CV (e.g. online exhibitions, articles etc.)

There are two ways to submit your application. Option 1 - email - submission by 19th May 2017

Question I do not have Microsoft Word, how can I submit the information.

Answer Submit the requested information in a text document we can open, and include attachments with your email. Options available to you are: Google Docs, Apple Pages, NotePad.

Question I cannot send an email over 20mb, and with attachments the email is too large.

Answer Using a programe such as photoshop, scale your images down to the requested size - JPEG 72dpi – we suggest a pixel dimension of between 1200px to 1800px.

Alternatively send the submission using WeTransfer (for details see page 14).

Question I am good using InDesign and other page layout programmes, can I send a nicely designed submission as a PDF.

Question My internet connection is not very good, can I still submit using the online form?

Answer Yes you can, but for sending images and captions we suggest you use WeTransfer.

Increasingly artists and designers are working within the broad spectrum of moving image.

Thisisoften,thoughnotalwaysintheformatofvideoart,experimentalfilm,andtime-basedinstallationsandsculptures

We are happy to recieve such applications. We are however unable, for example, to watch 10 works each of which is 1hour in length.

Up to 10 separate moving image works can be submitted, please ensure that each excerpt does not exceed 1 minute. If showing more than one moving image work please compile works into a single showreel not exceeding 1 minute per work. The showreel can be uploaded to Vimeo / YouTube or another such video sharing platform. If you choose to password protect the upload, please ensure you provide us with the password.

The Jameel Prize will be selected in 3 stages and entries will be subject to the following process:

Stage 1

Submission of a fully completed registration form and up to 10 images of work made within the last 5 years and that answer the criteria (see page 11). Only 10 images in total can be submitted, including multiple images of the same work, for example a full picture and a picture of a detail of the same work will count as two images. Images must be sent electronically in the formats below;

• JPEG 300dpi or maximum of 3 MB per image • if you are submitting moving image works then please provide details for online links such as Vimeo or YouTube and refer to page 9 of this document.

Deadline for submission if submitting by email 19th May 2017Deadline for submission if submitting online 19th May 2017

Stage 2The week of 3 July 2017, the judges will shortlist between 5-10 artists to show existing work in the Jameel Prize 5 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London during the summer of 2018 and thereafter for a potential global tour. Artists will be contacted by 29 July 2017 and informed whether or not they have been selected for exhibition.

Stage 3

Thefinal£25,000prizewillbeawardedbythepanelofjudgestooneoftheexhibitingartistsduringtheexhibitionin Summer2018.Therewillbeonlyoneprizeof£25,000awarded.

Jameel Prize Criteria

1) To be eligible for the Jameel Prize, a body of work must:• have a clear link to the traditional art, craft and design practice of the Islamic world and show an informed understanding of these traditions.• demonstrate outstanding skill and quality of artistic concept and inspire new ways of seeing and thinking about Islamic tradition.• engage meaningfully with contemporary audiences.

2)Thebodyofworkmustexist,anditmusthavebeenmadeinthelastfiveyears.

3) The making process and the quality of craftsmanship can be considered during judging, but the artist or designer can employ others in the production process, and they do not have to have made the work themselves.

Jameel Prize Eligibility

• The work submitted must meet the criteria of the Jameel Prize• Artist/designers have to be nominated by an arts professional, for example a fellow artist, curator or critic• The work/s submitted must have been made during the last 5 years• Imagesmustbesentinthefollowingelectronicformats:JPEGfilewithamaximumsizeof300dpior3MBperimage• Artists/designers wishing to submit moving image must supply a link to sites such as Vimeo or YouTube• All artists/designers must submit a completed registration form

Step 1 Æ Open an image in Photoshop. Select Image > Image Size.

Step 2 Æ Do any of the following:

To change image size, enter values for Width and Height. To maintain the original ratio of width and height, select the Constrain Proportions option. Deselect this option to adjust the width or height independently.

To change the Resolution, enter a new value.

To change the image size or resolution while allowing the total number of pixels to adjust proportionately, make sure that you select Resample.

To change the image size or resolution without changing the total number of pixels, deselect Resample

Step 3 Æ Click OK. Photoshop resizes the image based on the values you entered.

The Jameel Prize is an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition. Its aim is to explore the relationship between Islamic traditions of art, craft and design and contemporary work as part of a wider debate about Islamic culture and its role today.

The Jameel Prize is organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in collaboration with Art Jameel, part of Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives, recently re-named Community Jameel. ThePrizewasfirstawardedin2009.

ThefirstpatronoftheJameelPrizewasthearchitectZahaHadid,whose passing was a great loss.

Aims• To increase and deepen the understanding and appreciation of Islamic cultural heritage• To encourage an innovative and contemporary interpretation of traditional Islamic Art and Craft

Desired outcomes• An exhibition of outstanding work by contemporary artists and designers that speaks meaningfully to audiences about traditional Islamic art across the world• An exhibition that encourages a dialogue across art, design and craft that is true to the traditions of Islamic Art• An exhibition that is cohesive and exciting and that stimulates interest in Islamic Art and Craft

HOW DOES THE JAMEEL PRIZE WORK?Entry for the Jameel Prize is by nomination. Nominations for the Jameel Prize are invited from a wide range of curators, museum specialists, academics, writers, critics and other specialists from across the globe who have knowledge of contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition.

The nominated artists and designers are all invited to submit an applicationbasedonworkproducedinthepreviousfiveyears.An independent panel of judges then meets to short-list the best submissions.

The artists and designers short-listed for the Jameel Prize are invited to show examples of their work in an exhibition organised by V&A. The panel of judges (which changes for each edition of the prize) select the winner from the exhibition. ThePrizeof£25,000isawardedduringaprize-givingceremony.

TheV&Ahousesoneoftheworld’sgreatcollectionsofIslamicartfromtheMiddleEast.ThiscanbeseenatitsbestintheJameelGallery of Islamic Art, which opened in July 2006. The new gallery was the inspiration for the Jameel Prize, which complements the collectionbyprovidingashowcasefornewartanddesignthatreflectstheIslamictraditionsofthepastondisplaythere.

TheV&AbegantocollectartfromtheIslamicworldwhenitfirstopenedtothepublicinthe1850s.TheMuseum’smissionwasto reform British industrial design, and it was thought that Islamic ideas about structuring patterns and matching decoration to shape and function could contribute to this reform. The Jameel Prize shows that this link between the Islamic art of the past and contemporary practice is still very much alive.
