W E L C O M E T O A N E W Y E A R I N D A N C E .

After months of preparation, I am excited to share the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s 2019 season with you.

This past year has been filled with new adventures and discoveries. I have enjoyed experiencing the many cities and towns in which we perform and look forward to exploring even more of this rich, beautiful country over the coming years.

My vision for the company is that we are celebrated for commissioned works by the brightest choreographers of our time, while meticulously maintaining the highest standards of traditional classical ballet. I place great importance in continuing to elevate New Zealand artists while attracting dancers, designers, choreographers and musicians from all over the world.

I am truly delighted to announce that our 2019 season includes works created especially for and on the Royal New Zealand Ballet, along with iconic works from leading international choreographers that will give the company’s many talented dancers an opportunity to shine.

Our year begins and ends with new works, tailor-made for the RNZB and for our New Zealand audiences. In between, you will witness a magnificent re-telling of ballet’s most enduring classic Swan Lake, along with a mixed bill featuring two of ballets most iconic works that continue to inspire all of us. Tutus on Tour will travel to eleven centres, and the Harry Haythorne Choreographic Award will continue to offer opportunities for emerging choreographers to hone their craft.

In this brochure you will find everything you need to plan a joyful new year of ballet-going. Great performances need great audiences, and our many artists, both onstage and behind the scenes, will flourish through your generosity. I warmly invite you to support our national ballet company by subscribing and by contributing to the company’s ongoing success through our membership and philanthropy programmes. We hope to see you in 2019.

PATRICIA BARKER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Nothing in life is black or white… and not just in what we see, but how we feel. How can we trust what we see? … what is real and what is not?

My journey to create Black Swan, White Swan began years ago when I was in the hospital battling cancer. The window in my room overlooked a lake where swans gathered. I instantly thought about the freedom and perfection they represented… but also how aggressive and dangerous they can be.

Mário Radačovský, choreographer

Patricia Barker commissioned Slovak choreographer Mário Radačovský to create a new version of Swan Lake for Grand Rapids Ballet in Michigan in 2012. The stripped down, elemental version of the story which Radačovský created, with the agony and ecstasy of Tchaikovsky’s original score at its heart, was an instant success with audiences, and has gone on to have acclaimed performances in both the USA and Europe.

As an exciting addition to its repertoire of full-length story ballets, and following in the company’s long tradition of presenting fresh takes on classic works, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is delighted to bring Black Swan, White Swan to New Zealand audiences in autumn 2019. With its focus on Siegfried’s struggle with ideal love, pure evil, temptation, and most of all, himself, this is a Swan Lake for the 21st century.

“Black Swan, White Swan is an artistic accomplishment of the highest order. Choreographer Mario Radačovský’s production [is] beguiling, captivating, ultimately enigmatic.” The Grand Rapids Press

The stage will be flooded with colour and light.

George Balanchine’s Serenade is one of the few ballets that can truly be held iconic. Conceived in 1934, it is American ballet’s founding document, the foundation on which all later works must stand and against which they will be judged.

28 dancers are transported by Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, moving through time and space in perfect patterns, architectural yet organic, supremely structured yet somehow free. Serenade has an inner light, a tranquillity and a deeply felt emotion that has spoken to generations of dancers and audiences. More than 40 years after it was first staged by the company, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is privileged to bring Serenade back to our theatres.

Serenade is all moonlight; William Forsythe’s Artifact II is a blast of neon and strobe.

Created in 1984, the year that Forsythe became Artistic Director of Ballet Frankfurt, the full-length Artifact, of which Artifact II is the second act, was Forsythe announcing himself as a distinctive new voice in ballet. Serenade was Balanchine taking the aura of Russian classicism to his adopted home in the New World: 50 years later, Forsythe blew the cobwebs off European ballet with primary colour, Bach spliced with electronica, and a larger than life American athleticism.

Completing the line-up is a commissioned work by Andrea Schermoly, Stand to Reason, first seen in 2018 as part of the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Wellington-only Strength & Grace programme, celebrating female suffrage. The work is based on the pamphlet ‘Ten Reasons Why a Woman Should Vote’ published in 1888, in which women had to justify their right to political participation. Stand to Reason celebrates the tenacity of these brave women who won the vote in New Zealand. We are delighted to have the opportunity to share it with a wider audience in 2019.

Faint starlight peeps through the dark forest canopy. It is midnight: the witching hour.Alone and lost, two hungry children stumble towards a glowing vision of warmth and comfort, heaven for any child with an empty belly and an aching heart. But all is not as it seems…

For Christmas 2019, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is proud to present a new two act ballet by Loughlan Prior, with a specially commissioned score by Claire Cowan. This major premiere brings together many of New Zealand’s creative talents to tell a timeless tale for audiences young and old.

RNZB Choreographer in Residence Loughlan Prior has built up a significant body of work as a choreographer and filmmaker, creating works for members of the RNZB as well as for diverse New Zealand companies and creative partners, and for performances and film festivals in Australia, Germany, France, Canada and the USA. Loughlan was the winner of the RNZB’s inaugural Harry Haythorne Choreographic Award in 2015, and in 2016 received Creative New Zealand’s Tup Lang Choreographic Award. His The Long and The Short of It, inspired by Sir Jon Trimmer, enchanted New Zealand audiences during 2018’s Tutus on Tour.

Claire Cowan is at the forefront of compositional talent in New Zealand. She has received significant commissions and awards from orchestras such as the Auckland Philharmonia and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, recently winning a prestigious Silver Scroll for her Television series soundtrack “Hillary”. Her classical concert work is unique in that it seamlessly merges art music and popular idioms, offering a strong connection to audiences. Since 2010, Claire has directed the popular Blackbird Ensemble, a theatrical orchestra dedicated to performing rarely heard music of all genres. Hansel and Gretel will be the first full length ballet score ever commissioned from a female composer in RNZB’s history, performed live by Orchestra Wellington, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Following sell-out performances around New Zealand in 2018, the RNZB is delighted to be expanding Tutus on Tour to take in eleven regional centres in 2019. From Kerikeri and Whangarei to Oamaru and Gore, Tutus on Tour brings family-friendly performances to heartland New Zealand.

Our dancers will perform classical favourites and contemporary works, tailor-made for intimate venues, and suitable for all ages.

Working in partnership with our Community and Education programme, Tutus on Tour also gives local schools in some centres the chance to get up close to the RNZB with Ballet in a Box: observing the dancers’ daily warm up, watching them perform brief works, and then exploring their world via a Q&A session. In the evening, the dancers will present performances from the company’s repertoire, in full costume.

Tutus on Tour is not part of the RNZB’s 2019 subscription season. Tickets are on sale from Monday 3 December: for local box office information please see rnzb.org.nz/tutus.
