Next year, McCarthy says he plans to replicate the skirting around the porches to match those from an original photo taken in the early 1900s. He will also re- place railings to match the originals. With Thanksgiving and the holidays upon us, McCarthy says his accident and the painting project have taught him he has much for which to be grateful. “I’m glad I did this project as it made me appreciate all the ornate details of this beautiful turn-of-the-century Victo- rian,” he says. “Upon completion of this job, I could not help but reflect back on the day of my accident just over four years ago, being very grateful to be alive and healthy. As my mom once told me - you will someday long to do the jobs you cannot do anymore,” McCarthy says. “I learned that lesson during my accident and recovery. Mostly, I am glad to have met many positive people that live in and around the neighborhood who greet- ed me daily while I worked on the job.” The original home at 41 Park Avenue in Brockport was built in 1825, but additions made around 1900 greatly expanded the home and resulted in the Victorian architecture seen today. Painstaking paint job becomes multi-hued blessingby Kristina Gabalski

Sometimes it takes an unexpected set-back to help you appreciate how fortu-nate you really are.

Such is the case with Kevin McCarthy of Brockport.

Four years ago, the now 58-year old McCarthy nearly died following a seri-ous fall which occurred while he was painting the exterior of a home he owns at 41 Park Avenue in the village.

He was working on the east side of the house when he fell head-first from a spot near the roofline to the ground, hitting the roof of an attached garage on the way. After months of recuperation, he resolved to begin the job again the fol-lowing spring.

“It’s a huge undertaking to paint a house of this magnitude (more than 3,000 square feet),” McCarthy says.

Returning to the job was not easy, however, he explains. “The first time back was very emotional ... I cried.”

But McCarthy was determined to com-plete one side of the house each year un-til the painstaking job was finished.

He soon found an unexpected source of encouragement which he says proved to be invigorating.

“It has been inspiring having several passers-by greet me with great com-ments on how the house was progress-ing, helping me complete this project,” McCarthy says.

“I got to meet a lot of people and got a sense of the neighborhood,” he explains of the time spent working on the exterior of the home. “It was a labor of love ... a lot of work ... and a lot of fun,” McCarthy says.

The house sits at a prominent spot in the village, on the corner of State Street and Park Avenue. McCarthy says some people have even called to him from their cars at the 4-way stop to express how much they like the job.

McCarthy kept a daily record of his work and totaled 647 hours of scraping, sanding, priming, painting and replace-

ment of siding. His friend, Steve Lav-ender, helped out by painting the high peaks using a lift truck.

“My total paint usage was 53 gallons of primer and finish coats, along with 35 tubes of caulk and two gallons of window putty,” McCarthy says.

His fiance, Valerie Ciciotti, helped pick out the color scheme which she says was inspired by a home the couple saw dur-ing a trip to the Thousand Islands. The siding is a light, almost teal blue and the trim is cream-colored. Yellow and deep purple are used to bring out the Victo-rian architectural details around win-dows, doors and in trim at the peaks.

McCarthy and Ciciotti say they rent the home to college students and work hard to be sensitive to neighbors who live in single family homes. “We want this to not look like a rental, but an owner-oc-cupied home,” they say.

“As landlords, Val and I try to do the right thing,” McCarthy notes.

“We like the college students and want to provide a comfortable place and a safe place for them to live,” Ciciotti says.

Next year, McCarthy says he plans to replicate the skirting around the porches to match those from an original photo taken in the early 1900s. He will also re-place railings to match the originals.

With Thanksgiving and the holidays upon us, McCarthy says his accident and the painting project have taught him he has much for which to be grateful.

Bumgarner selected Hickok Belt™ award winner for October

San Francisco Giants Pitcher and World Series MVP Madi-son Bumgarner has been selected as the Hickok Belt Award winner for the month of October 2014. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).

Bumgarner became the first monthly Hickok Belt Award Winner to be selected unanimously thanks to his incredible performance at the 2014 World Series. In one of the greatest World Series pitching performances of all time, Bumgarner defeated the Kansas City Royals in Game 1, pitched a shut-out in Game 5, and finally came on in relief to clinch the vic-tory in Game 7 with 5 shutout innings – allowing only two hits while striking out four with no walks. Bumgarner also became the sixth man in World Series history to pitch at least 5 innings in 3 different World Series games while allowing no more than one earned run per contest. Provided information

Suburban News - North Edition - November 30, 2014 3Pilon Home Renovation Project

Grateful family will pay community’s efforts and caring forward

Our entire family wishes to thank Home Depot, the fac-ulty and staff of the Hilton Central School District, Hil-ton/Parma community members, the members of Hilton Cares, the various businesses and companies involved in the Pilon Home Renovation Project and Stephanie Har-ney without whom this project would have never been possible.

After six weeks of backbreaking labor by hundreds of volunteers, we returned home to what was once a dilapi-dated 150 year old house, to discover a completely reno-vated, safe, clean and healthy home - complete with brand new roof, landscaping, heating, and the removal of a dan-gerously old barn and tree.

Our hearts are full of love, appreciation and gratitude for everyone who made this dream a reality. From those of you who came and worked inside and outside the house, to the businesses who provided food and refreshments, to those who donated equipment, services, furnishings, gift cards, meals, childcare, and most importantly thoughts and prayers for our family, we are forever thankful.

Our family is committed to honoring all of you and your kindness and generosity by paying it forward to others in need and by being good stewards of what you have provid-ed us. This is something that we will dedicate the rest of our lives to doing. Our community has greatly benefitted from your energy and inspiration surrounding the Pilon Home Renovation Project and the creation of the not for profit, Hilton Cares.

Please know that all of you have provided us hope, peace and tremendous encouragement during a very dif-ficult time and your efforts continue to bless us everyday throughout our journey. The story is far from over, be-cause of your efforts, you have shown our children, our town, our community and beyond, the power of caring and the difference that empathy and love can truly make in the lives of others. May your graciousness and generosity return to you tenfold.

All of our love and prayersto you and your families,The Monagan-Pilon and Achter Families

Holiday Lights Spectacular ushers in festive seasonby Kristina Gabalski

This year’s Holiday Lights Spectacular in Brockport is set for Sunday, December 7.

The parade begins at 5 p.m. on Main Street, but all are encouraged to spend the

afternoon in the village’s downtown busi-ness district Christmas shopping.

“We hope people come out early and stick around,” parade organizer Brian Winant says. “We are hoping for a good turnout.”

This is the fourth year of the event, Wi-nant notes, and the parade will once again feature glittering and twinkling lighted floats, vehicles of all kinds lit up with holiday lights, marching bands and music. “It’s been four years and it’s getting stron-ger every year.” Winant says.

“Jeremy ‘Newman’ of the WBEE Morn-ing Coffee Club and Stacey Pensgen of WROC-TV will be serving as MC’s,” he adds.

Following the parade, the village’s tree lighting ceremony will be held in Sagawa Park and includes a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

One portion of the event will be missing this year, Winant says. “We are unable to have fireworks because of state regula-tions and the lack of available space,” he explains.

Winant also reminds parade-goers that there will be no parking on Main Street after 3 p.m. for safety purposes during the parade.

He adds that there is still time for orga-nizations, groups and individuals to reg-ister to participate in the parade with a float. Five hundred dollars in prize money will be awarded. To register call 585-391-3155 or email [email protected]

To the best of our knowledge, one of the aspects of self-awareness that separates humans from other animals is that we have knowledge of our impending demise. Unlike other living things, we wonder about what happens to the dead. It is this concern that gave rise in prehistory to the sacred act of burying our dead. This fundamental obligation is much the same as it was thousands of years ago. We pause when death occurs. We ask what we can do to ease the passage. We contemplate our own end. We search for ways to comfort the living. We remember the dead. While traditions may differ, these are the questions and circumstances that

make us all uniquely human.A funeral is a ceremony of proven worth and value

for those who mourn. It provides an opportunity for the survivors and others who share in the loss to express their love, respect, grief and appreciation for a life that has been lived. A funeral gives the bereaved the opportunity to take a first step toward emotionally adjusting to their loss. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Negotiating in the Spirit of Cooperation

When the seller of a home receives a buyers's offer, the transaction enters the negotiations phase. Successful negotia-tion is an artful process because buyers and sellers don't always agree on every point of the contract. The hoped-for outcome is the satisfactory conclusion of the home sale, wherein the seller receives market value for the home and the buyer moves into a new residence in good condition. To achieve this mutual goal, all parties must approach the negotiations in a spirit of cooperation.

Willingness to listen to the other party is key to the success of the negotiation. While keeping your own top priorities in mind, try to identify points that you might be willing to concede. Be flexible on some aspect of the sale that is very important to the other party--don't expect to get your way at every turn. A "give and take" attitude communicates a concern for the needs of others, develops trust and contributes to a successful transaction.

For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.
