BOOK REVIEW SUCCESSFUL SECOND

The Proceedings* of the 54th Annual Conference of the Australian Veterinary Association, being the second proceedings book, is a great success - like the first in 1976. The Perth conference was partly wrecked by the strike of the air traffic controllers, and many papers were not presented. However, they are in the Proceed- ings and so are preserved for perusal and study. They cover a broad range of topics - in keeping with the versatility of the veterinarian.

There are 73 papers, 20 grouped under 6 symposia headings, 8 for cats and dogs, 8 for cattle, 6 for horses, 4 for meat inspection and public health, 3 for pharma- cology and therapeutics, 5 for pigs, 5 for poultry, 14 for sheep. Most have a bibliography, often extensive.

The Symposium: Man and Companion Animals (the theme of the conference) has Veterinary Public Health and the Companion Animal (A. R. A. Watson), and Pets and Society (a most interesting paper by M. McHarg of Practice Management Consultants Pty). This symposium included a most interesting and thoughtful paper from R. R. Pascoe which one hopes will be published some day soon.

The Symposium: The Veterinary Profession, has Supply and Demand for Veterinary Graduates (A. J. Frost), New Avenues of Employment for Veterinarians (M. E. Nairn), and Continuing Education for Veteri- narians (W. G. Cotton).

“Veterinary Education” has the New Graduate and Veterinary Practice (D. I. Bryden), Foundations of Veterinary Education (R. H. Dunlop), What Should a Graduate be Able to Do (A. F. Smits), and a Pre- scription for a Veterinary Graduate (T. J. Heath).

“Veterinarians in Research” has Veterinary Research in the New South Wales Department of Agriculture (R. M. Watts).

“Rabies” has Observations on the Epidemiology, Symptomatology and Control of Rabies in China 1939- SO (W. Marbach), Rabies: a Retrospective and Pro- * Proceedings. 54th Annual Conference Australian Veterinary

Altura 1971). Analgesics helped to avert pain shock during the recovery period.

Though various techniques have been suggested for closing the vent in the diaphragm, the con- tinuous lock stitch proved to be more satisfactory than interrupted mattress sutures (Vig 1972; Singh 1974) or synthetic patches (Vig 1972). A post- operative radiograph and the subsequent behaviour of the animals indicated satisfactory healing of the diaphragm. The technique is advis- able because of its ease in application and uniform distribution of tension. Pregnant animals had uneventful parturitions which demonstrated the efficacy of anaesthesia and the technique em- ployed for repair of the diaphragm.

There are 4 papers concerned with the export of live sheep: Exports to the Middle East (D. W. Roberts), Rejection of Carcasses (R. W. Wroth, R. J. Suitar), Outlook of Australian Exports (H. G. Neil), Diseases in Export Sheep (G. M. C. l‘ruscott).

The Proceedings form a valuable commentary on cur- rent veterinary affairs, they bring up to date many aspects of disease and its control, and the symposia - designed to present a comprehensive and well considered review of the several subjects - include material not to be found readily, even found at all, elsewhere. Every veterinarian, if he is to guard and preserve his most valued attribute, versatility, should have this collection.

Congratulations to the veterinary editor, Graeme Allen, and to the executive editor, Janet Donald.
