CHAPTER OFFICERS Knights of Columbus Vol. 14 No. 11 May 2015 SUFFOLK CHAPTER NEWS From the Chapter Chairman’s Desk … Brothers/Sisters: Well Spring is finally here! I hope everyone has made it through this brutal winter. First I would like to Thank Kavanaugh Council and GK Orlando Jimenez for hosting this past Chapter meeting which was also Squire’s Night. I want to Thank DGK Ken Giglio and the Squires Circle from Kavanaugh Council and especially Chief Squire Mateo; what an exceptional young man. I see him as a State Squire’s officer in the near future. Thank You to Tom Gillin and his son Chris who spoke about the Squires. Our joint Communion Breakfast with the Columbiettes was a success. Thank you to ST John Joseph for co-chairing with the Columbiettes. Thank You Amelia and your ladies for the baskets and the Charity Drive books that were sold (44). The guest speaker from A Mother’s Kiss was inspirational and thank you to the brothers and sisters who donated to this organization as it was well deserved. This month’s meeting is at Joan of Arc Council located in Port Jefferson on May 8. It is Chaplain’s Night and I hope the councils would be bringing their Chaplains. Please let Executive Secretary Joe Dinero know if you are. This month there will be 2 spaghetti dinners with the profits going to The Sunrise Fund. One will be at Sts. Phillip and James Council while the other will be at Patchogue Council. Both will be held on May 30. Please let’s make this a huge success for the Sunrise Fund. Don’t forget that May is our lady Mary’s month! What a fitting way to celebrate by attending the Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in East Port on Sunday, May 24 with a 10 a.m. rosary walk and 11:30 a.m. Mass. Also if you are planning on running for office in the Chapter, see Nominating Chairman John Lazar ASAP. Lastly, don’t forget our Charity Drive is in Full Swing with the end of the Charity Drive celebrated at the Watermill Inn in Smithtown. Let’s make this a banner year. God Bless You All! My Dear Sister Columbiettes: I cannot believe how fast this year is going! We are in the month of May already and as we all know May is

Marys month. As she is one of our Patronesses, I ask that you each pray an extra rosary or two this month! Mary loves it when we speak with her!

Since my last letter to you we have been together for many functions! We held our joint Communion Breakfast which was very successful with a crowd of 125 and a beautiful presentation by a young woman from A Mothers Kiss! A special thank you to Maureen Jones, our Chairlady and her wonderful team of Columbiettes! Our spring fundraiser, The Spring Fling was held just the next day by our Past Presidents and it was a spectacular success thanks to their hard work and your great support. We thank Ronny, Barbara, Mary, Kathy, Joan, Terri, and Rose Marie for taking on this task and raising over $2,500! A complete report will be presented at our May meeting.

In addition to our monthly letter, all presidents will be receiving a 2-page form which I am asking you to complete and return to me immediately following your elections. If you are no longer going to be the president, I ask that you give it to the newly elected president along with your guidance in completing it. It is important that this is returned to Anne Marie Callahan by June 1, 2015. This information is needed for the directory so please be sure to take care of this immediately following your elections.

We are preparing for our spring Major Degree which looks like it will be very successful! I thank Doreen DeBlasio and Blanche Jozwicki for co-chairing this degree as well as all the members of our great team! I also extend my warmest thanks to both Patchogue Columbiettes and Knights for hosting this degree for us and always being there when we need them!

I continue to encourage you to promote this years Charity Drive at your meetings by making certain your members are signing Sponsor Cards, selling Award Books, soliciting Journal Ads, and collecting Direct Donations! Please make certain they know that the Ball will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Watermill. Please contact Anne Marie Callahan for any materials you may need.

As we prepare for the New York State Council Convention which is being held at Villa Roma in Callicoon, NY, I am hopeful that you are as excited as I am. Be sure to stop at the Suffolk Chapter Hospitality Room as you make your way around the resort! We are looking forward to seeing you there and giving our support to Kathy Anderson for NYS Sentinel! Please know that we will be accepting nominations for the positions of all our officers at our May meeting which will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Sylvester in Medford. I ask all Auxiliaries who have not hosted a meeting this year to please send a donation to St. Sylvester Columbiettes to help them with the cost of the refreshments. All donations can be sent to Leticia Dunn at 24 Syracuse Avenue, Medford, NY 11763. As we shared previously, they are doing double duty to help us with our meeting places. As May is Marys month, we invite you to join us for the May Crowning. I ask for your attendance, and I thank you in advance for your support.

On behalf my officers and I, we wish all a beautiful Mothers Day! Fraternally,

    Amelia Joseph

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, conducted by the Montfort Missionaries is located on the eastern

end of Long Island about sixty miles from New York City. Conceived in 1953 as a place of pilgrimage,

actual construction began in 1972 on 65 acres of land donated by a generous benefactor.

An 18 foot statue of Mother and child, carved from a forty ton piece of granite at the Rock of Ages

Studio in Vermont was added in 1975 and stands atop a glacial boulder of rose quartz that has

remained in position for the past 15,000 years. It overlooks Moriches Bay and the Atlantic Ocean

    some five miles away.

In 1954, lobbying by the Order of the Knights of Columbus

helped convince the U.S. Congress to add the phrase "under

God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. President Dwight

Eisenhower wrote to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart thanking

the Knights for their "part in the

added to our Pledge of Allegiance." I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United
