Hierdie uitgawe word onder andere gewy aan die 2020 George Oumotorskou. Ek en die skoukommittee was onder groot druk om hierdie skou aanmekaar te sit en daar te stel. Almal het fantasties saamgewerk en op die beplande datum van 8 en 9 Februarie 2020 was dit skoutyd. Ek wil een en elkeen, van die klubkommittee, wetgewer, George Munisipaleteit, die borge die organiseringskommittee, die helpers, die media, my gesin, die klubs, die ondersteuners en die besoekers hiermee bedank vir julle entoesiasme en dryf.
Dankie aan almal wat bygedra het tot hierdie “Spanner”. This edition is dedicated, among other things, to the 2020 George Old Car Show. The show committee and I were under great pressure to put this show together and to present it. Everyone worked well together and on the planned date of 8 and 9 February 2020 it was show time. I would like to thank each and every one of you, from the club committee, legislature, the sponsors the organizing committee, the helpers, the media, my family, the clubs, the supporters and the visitors for your enthusiasm and drive.

VOORBLAD FOTO Hierdie 1960 Studebaker Champ bakkie, waarvan ‘n foto op die meeste van die skou se gedrukte materiaal verskyn, soos die voorblad van hierdie Spanner, behoort aan Pierre Conradie, ‘n lid van die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub. Pierre het verskeie Studebakers, maar dié bakkie is die appel van sy oog en omdat dit geel is, staan dit altyd uit en lok baie vrae van omstanders, veral: Hoe vining kan hy ry? en “Start” asseblief die enjin. Daar is baie min van dié jaartal op die pad en dit staan uit omdat dit nog die ou laaibak het met die nuwe neus wat van die 1959 Studebaker Lark sedan motor kom. Dit is waarom baie mense opmerk: “Dit is mos die voorkant van die Lark wat die blitspatrollie gebruik het.” Die laaibak het die mooi uitgeboude (“step-side”) modderskerms met die spaarwiel wat ingebou is in een van die modderskems. Dit word net by die 1960 model gekry. Pierre het die bakkie ongeveer 10 jaar gelede by ‘n glashandelaar in Johannesburg gekoop en dit net betyds gered van ‘n “hotrod” ombouing. Dit was in ‘n swak toestand en Pierre het ongeveer 3 jaar geneem om dit van die grond af oor te bou. Pierre se bynaam vir die bakkie is Dik Boude. To make the bakkie easier and safer to drive certain changes were made, which are not easily noticeable to the casual observer. These include swapping the truck gearbox with a car gearbox with an overdrive (available in the USA), a lower diff ratio, power steering and disk brakes. The engine is a standard Studebaker 259 cubic inch (±4,5 litre) V8, which coupled to the altered drive train makes it faster and can accelerate up to 150 km/hour in a flash. The rubber seals, engine and many other parts were ordered from America as New Old Stock Parts (called NOS parts), meaning that they were manufactured in about 1960. Studebaker parts are relatively inexpensive and it is generally cheaper to rebuild a V8 compared with a modern four cylinder engine. The colour is standard, but from an earlier Studebaker bakkie, the Express Coupe. Pierre took a 1/18th scale model of a bakkie in this colour to the spray painter to have the paint mixed. Studebaker was the first manufacturer to fit a sliding window in the rear of the cab and was also a leader in using the front section of a car on what they call in America a “truck”. This bakkie was manufactured on a shoe string budget and what is noticeable is that they did not bother to remove the indentation in the front valance, where the car bumper was mounted, and the car floor mounting frames used to fix the front body section to the chassis. There is a gap of nearly 100 mm between these unused mounting frames and the truck chassis. Pierre doen meeste van die restorasie self, maar met dié projek moet erkenning gegee word aan S & Z Paneelkloppers, Roelf & Jack Garage, Kommaweer Stoffering en BFM Enjin Bouers.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
With all the planning and organizing, the show became a reality at 10:00 am on
Saturday morning the 08th
of February. After I welcomed everybody, we were
honoured to start with an opening ceremony by the Municipality of George. The
opening was done by Me. Charlotte Clarke, the Deputy Mayor of George.
She was accompanied by Cllr. Liza Stroebel and a delegation of the Junior Council
of George. The Deputy Mayor was driven to the opening stage by Pierre Conradie,
owner of “Dik Boude”, the Studebaker that was used in all marketing Material
and on our Front Page. The Junior Council was brought in by Waldo Scribante
with a Mercedes Minibus that belongs to the Scribs Benzeum, the Main Sponsor.
The Council and junior council members were treated with a drive by and even had the opportunity to dive some of the vehicles. René Scribante of the Scribs Benzeum, Our Main Sponsor, addressed the crowd and gave an overview of their mission and thanked all involved and present. Ds. Pieter Cronje opened the event with reading from the Bible a short message of hope and a prayer – then it was Showtime! Herman Ungerer the announcer was in his element and presented the drive-by’s with his usual flair!
This year’s show boasted with a very successful auction held on the Saturday at 13:00 by Trader’s Auctioneers.
On the Sunday we were entertained by the Herman Grobler and his Band “Onbekend” the played different music from all times and were widely appreciated. Later the Sunday Morning Michael Lindt came in for a while and made the show very energetic and appreciated.
Although the show has not changed at all, we did a few things different this year. We branded the show fencing, put up banners all over town and utilized many other marketing channels. Scribs Benzeum sponsored us with Arches, Gazebos and other branding utilities. There were more than 900 Old Cars on show this year and we were blessed to have more than 12 500 visitors through the gates on Saturday and Sunday. This was a show for the whole family. Many ladies were so impressed in the feedback that we received about the wide selection of stalls available.
There was a Pink Tractor at the show! Andre Barnard, Chairperson of the ”Suidkaap Trekker en Implemente Klub” arranged for the Tractor to be visible as a fund raising campaign for the Cancer Association. Dr Waldo Scribante supplied promotional material and personnel. We received in access of R5,000-00. Thank you to everybody involved. The Southern Cape Old Car Club had their own tent for members next to the Midas tent. This was a winner and members could enjoy some shade and snacks. The main Sponsor, Scribs Benzeum also provided us with a new branded registration tent. Not only was it a WOW Show, but we also looked WOW! Unfortunately, only a few hours before the show, the George Health Department notified us that there would be no dogs allowed. In the past we had signs at the gates that no dogs were allowed, but some slipped through. We do however apologise for any hardship or inconvenience caused. We are negotiating to let some dogs through and will notify in press before next year’s show. On 18 February 2020 we had our “After Show” Meeting at “Die Benz” – everybody present had good feedback and we had a Burger BBQ’d by Waldo. Thank you Everybody. CLUBHOUSE EVENTS – “DIE BENZ”

Dear fellow SCOCC members, we are proud to introduce our long-awaited new Clubhouse, Die Benz, to you! We are very excited and proud that we now have a place, where we can gather in chatter and exchange some wisdoms… display technical books and our regalia, amongst other items. The facilities available are, a Library, a Boardroom, a Kitchen and Bar area, as well as ablution facilities. There is also a conference room available with an overhead projector and screen, earmarked for AGM meetings, general meetings, technical evenings, etc. There is also a large undercover entertainment and braai area with ample space to accommodate approximately 90 people for such events as Classics & Coffee, Noggin Braai, Bonnets up and technical evenings to name a few… We would like to extend an open invitation to you and your family members to join fellow enthusiasts/collectors at “Die Benz”, where we can exchange information or just talk about the good old days! NUWEJAARS-ONTBYT WABOOMSKRAAL

Die eerste dag van die Nuwejaar het goed begin met pragtige sonskyn weer........ons bestemming Peter Boshoff se plaas by Waboomskraal. Ek het 'n heerlike rit met een van my afslaankap motors gehad en het vroeg oggend al uit Mosselbaai vertrek. Langs die pad , op die Outeniqua pas, het ek van die George manne gekry oppad plaas toe. Daar aangekom was daar al reeds heelparty klublede met hulle ou motors en die vure het al lekker gebrand en was Andrew en sy span besig om heerlike roosterkoek te bak wat jy kon ruik met ons aankoms Peter het sy groot skuur mooi ingerig en kon lede hul tafels en stoele tussen Peter se motors, wat mooi uitgestal was, opslaan. Almal het self heerlike ontbyt gemaak en is daar lekker gekuier en ge-eët Ek het ongeveer 20 motors getel wat die rit meegemaak het, wat 'n mooi opkoms vir die eerste dag van 'n nuwe jaar. Dit was baie lekker om Jack Boshoff , een van ons klub se stigterslede, daar te sien en kon almal lekker met hom gesêls. Hy is klublid Nr 1.

Dit is n voorreg om saam met instansies te werk wat bereid is om iets terug te gee aan hulle klante en die gemeenskap wat hulle ondersteun. Daarom is Supa Quick Yorkstraat en Bridgestone gevra om vir die SKOMK n tegniese aand aan te bied by ons klubhuis Die Benz. Baie komplimente is ontvang met die pragtige klubhuis . Supa Quick gaan vanjaar by die 2020 Ou Motorskou goed verteenwoordig wees. Hulle die afglope vier jaar n bydrae gemaak tot die Erfenistoer en gaan weer betrokke wees by die 2020 toer. Die SKOMK is bevoorreg om met instansies soos julle ge-assosieer te wees.
DIESEL PONTON NAMIB ADVENTURE
2020 – Mike Alexander
About 18 months ago, three members of the SCOCC (and the MBCSA) discussed
ways to promote their Clubs, make the youth aware of their old car heritage,
create awareness of the advantages of owning an old car, and have fun by doing
something challenging. Each member owned an old Mercedes Benz diesel
Ponton, which are well known for their reliability and economy. An international
tour into Southern Africa was the obvious solution!
Mike Alexander (1960 190D), Peter Boshoff (1956 180D) and Danie and Karin
Schmidt (1959 180D) will be leaving the SCOCC clubhouse (“Die Benz”) on the 27th
March, and hope to return to George by the end of April 2020. They plan to travel
up the west coast of SA to Alexander Bay, and then cross over into Namibia. After
visiting Luderitz and Sossus Vlei, the route leads to Swakopmund were a few days
of angling awaits.
Then north to the Caprivi and crossing over into Zambia to visit the mighty
Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe is next, where after visiting the Hwange game reserve
and Bulawayo, they enter Botswana and travel South via Gaborone to George.
The trip will cover about 8000 kilometers, and will be unassisted (ie. No sweep
vehicle). Accommodation will be in the form of camping, except for Swakopmund
where a guest house has kindly offered rooms.
Nothing of this magnitude has ever been tackled by Club members before, and
the hope is that this adventure will possibly spark similar adventures in the
future.
Peter Boshoff’s car should know the road well – it completed a trip in 1960 from
Oudtschoorn to Casablanca, then was shipped to England and ended up in
Scotland. It was then shipped back to Cape Town.
Anyone wishing to sponsor diesel can make payments into the SCOCC account
(details on first page) and use the reference “Ponton Adventure”. We wish them
safe travels and are looking forward to following them on Facebook and
Instagram.
SKOMK BYEENKOMSTE 2020
Meer agtergrond ivm SKOMK byeenkomste vorentoe.
Ek stel voor Deon Erasmus, Willie Thomson en Pierre Olivier die span wat die
Motorklub se byeenkomste vir die volgende jaar sal reël.
Mede klublede, die jaar het nou al mooi afgeskop met die eerste maand op sy rug
en ‘n suksesvolle Ou Motorskou wat ook afgehandel is. Nou kyk ons vorentoe met
baie opwinding na die jaar se byeenkomste wat gaan plaas vind.
Die fokus wyk ook so n bietjie af van garage aande na meer tegniese inligtings
aande. So beplan ons onder andere om n Detailing aand, aangebied deur een van
ons jong klub lede, Caltex aand, Lug en olie filtreerings aand aan te bied waar ons
ook kundiges sal betrek om dit aan te bied.
Ons is ook baie opgewonde oor nuwe bykomende byeenkomste naamlik “Classic
& Coffee” elke 1ste Saterdag oggend 08:00 en “Noggin braai” elke 2de Vrydag
vanaf 18:00 by Die Benz.
Kom deel die geleenthede saam met ons by ons eie klubhuis, Die Benz, sien julle
daar! (Bring ook julle eggenote / eggenoot asook kinders en ander entoesiaste
wat in motors belangstel saam – oortuig net sulke entoesiaste om by die klub aan
te sluit)

12 Volt Generators
This is an old discussion point, however, a couple of enthusiasts have mentioned they would like to change their vehicles from 6 to 12 volts. The question asked is - is it a simple task and can it be done by the average DIY enthusiast? It isn't a difficult job but you have to be an auto-electrician, mechanic, and a machinist to complete the job.
To start with you have to change all your light bulbs. You may also have to change the bulb holders as modern 12 volt bulbs don't always fit into the early 6 volt holders. Most 6 volt generators have a cut-out to control the charging rate, this will have to be replaced with a 12 volt regulator. Fit a 12 volt coil and make sure it doesn't need a resister. Should you have headlight, hooter, or any other relays they must also be changed. Another problem will be your fuel gauge. These gauges are nothing more than voltmeters so you will have to replace it or fit a resistance in line to bring the 12 volts down to 6 volts. Your hooter should survive but don't “blow” it continuously or you will have an ex-hooter.
We suggest you find all the bits and pieces before starting the job. Items like original 12volt relays are in very short supply but one can always fit modern ones – as long as they are not visible!!!
One of the biggest problems (headaches) you could face is the drive pulley. Your current 6 volt generator will be fitted with a broad fan belt and to find a 12 volt generator with a pulley to take a broad belt could be problematic. Most US built cars went to 12 volt in 1955 and 1956 still using broad belts and in about 1957 they went to narrow belts. So ideally a generator from the 1955/56 would solve your problem. A few years ago these were freely available but are very scarce now.
With a bit of luck your old pulley may fit onto the shaft of the 12 volt generator. If not, the services of a good engineering shop will be required. Incidentally, fitting a narrow belt to a broad pulley is looking for trouble – see picture. I was told by this vehicles owner he couldn't find a broad pulley for the generator so he just fitted a narrow belt and hoped in wouldn't give trouble. We've got news for him!
Last but not least, why not fit an alternator and get it over with! We’ll discuss this next time.
