What are College & Career Anchor Standards?
What are New York State Teaching Standards?
One key step in the journey of comprehending the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are their use of what
they call College and Career Readiness (CCR) “anchor standards.” A CCR anchor standard is a skill that high school
graduates should have in order to be ready for entry into the world of work or postsecondary education. Basically, an
anchor standard is an answer to the question, “What should a 21st century diploma holder be able to do in order to
flourish?” Whether you teach kindergarten or 12th grade, an anchor standard is the target. The CCSS also offers more
specific explanations of the anchor standards by grade level.
The anchor standards are the fundamental skills that we want students to have when they graduate from our
public schools. They are general enough to allow for the entrepreneurial aspects of being a teaching professional (i.e.,
they give us room to play), but they are also rigorous (which, I would argue, kids will appreciate), and they are also
aligned with what colleges and workplaces expect students to be able to do. These anchors or what can keep our kids
from floating away sometime between their entry into kindergarten and the fateful flipping of their tassles.
For detailed information on each standard please go to - http://www.teachingthecore.com/ccr-anchor-standards/
Anchor Standards Key
R= Reading Standards
W= Writing Standards
SL= Speaking & Listening Standards
The NYS Teaching Standards are structured around the seven core Standards, a set of Elements under each Standard that further defines each Standard, and a set of Performance Indicators under each Element. Each Standard represents a broad area of knowledge and skills that research and best practices in the classroom have shown to be essential to effective teaching and to positively contribute to student learning and achievement. Each Standard is de-fined by Elements that describe the desired knowledge, skills, actions, and behaviors of teachers for that Standard. The Elements define “what” teachers do and the Performance Indicators describe “how” teachers accomplish the ac-tions or behaviors. Below are the highlights of the standards:
1. Knowledge of Students and Student Learning
2. Knowledge of Content and Instructional Planning
3. Instructional Practice
4. Learning Environment
5. Assessment for Student Learning
6. Professional Responsibilities and Collaboration
7. Professional Growth
For detailed information on each standard please go to -

This class will focus on: Creating classroom activities using the SMARTBoard; Using the Essen-tials for Educators tools; Using the Gallery Sampler tools; Exploring internet re-sources. Participants will also learn where to go for support, tutorials, and ideas. Anchor Standards – W6 Presenter – Stacey Lazarus http://www.mylearningplan.com – SC BOCES Web Reg.
