I am delighted to report that 2012/13 proved to be a record-breaking fundraising year for the Responsible GamblingTrust with the gambling industry donating £5.7million lastyear - 10% more than in 2011/12. The charity has alsocontinued to reduce its overhead and fundraising costs, which now represent 9.6p for every £1 raised.

As a charity that is wholly and voluntarily funded from the gambling industry, theResponsible Gambling Trust is acutely aware of the need to maintain itsindependence and integrity. Consequently, the organisation has put in placerobust governance arrangements to oversee all its work including theestablishment of a research committee chaired by Liz Barclay, the charity’s seniorindependent trustee. The Responsible Gambling Trust has also appointed BellPottinger (David Hill and Stephen Lotinga) as communications advisers to helpbuild and secure the organisation’s reputation.

In November last year the Responsible Gambling Trust announced details of itsfirst fundraising overseas challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. All places onthis October 2013 expedition have been allocated and the charity is now callingfor individuals and corporate teams from the gambling industry to join its SaharaDesert Trek in March 2014.

The Responsible Gambling Trust recently published its 2013/14 commissioningplan, setting out how donations will be spent on research, education/harmprevention and treatment services. This year, the proposed distribution of fundsis planned to be 16% more than in 2012/13.

On behalf of my fellow trustees, the staff at the Responsible Gambling Trust andour beneficiaries, I thank you for your support and very much hope that you willhelp us achieve our 2013/14 fundraising target of £6million.

"It is a condition of all gambling operating licences issued by the Gambling Commissionthat operators contribute to research, education and treatment in the field of problemgambling. As with all licence conditions, the Gambling Commission takes complianceseriously. While it is open to operators to decide how best to comply, many operators findthe simplest way to do so is to make a contribution to the Responsible Gambling Trust.Making a suitable contribution to the Trust will always be acceptable to the Commissionand we encourage operators to take that option up."

An essential feature of the Responsible Gambling Trust’s long-term strategy for research is executing a robustand systematic examination of data collected and held by the gambling industry in order to consider its usefulnessfor research into responsible gambling and harm minimisation. Depending on the availability and feasibility ofusing the data, a full range of target variables are likely to be considered including demographic, transactionaland behavioural data.

It is intended that such scoping work will initially focus on key priority areas as identified in the Strategy includinghigh stake, high prize gaming machines and remote gambling (including mobile and social gambling). The first ofthese scoping studies, one examining gaming machine play, is already under way.

It is the Responsible Gambling Trust’s intention that these scoping studies will inform more specific researchobjectives for wider programmes of research over the next three years and beyond. The Responsible GamblingTrust anticipates that such objectives will include, but will not be limited to, the analysis of industry data.
