Focus on Exchange For the first time, a group of UBC students will travel on exchange programs to Hebrew U this year through Go Global, the UBC student exchange program umbrella organization. New initiatives in facilitating academic exchange programs between the two universities have resulted in UBC and Hebrew U students gaining the life-changing experiences associated with study abroad.

Two strong supporters of both UBC and Hebrew U, who have contributed to the success of this exchange process are Bill and Madame Justice Risa Levine. Both are graduates of UBC as is their daughter, Sara. Now a Justice on the BC Court of Appeal, Risa Levine has been an adjunct professor in the law faculty. Bill Levine held the post of

Chair of the Board of Governors at UBC from 2010 to 2013. They are connected to Hebrew U through local CFHU events and have also travelled with CFHU to the

university. Their two daughters also attended Hebrew U.

Their financial and ideological support of exchanges between the two universities is straightforward. Bill Levine was clear about their motivation when he said, “We feel travelling to study contributes greatly to the student experience. We are particularly interested in having students have an Israel experience where they might gain some insights that they wouldn’t get from studying at their home university.”

International Relations major Daniella Hu is one of the students who will study at Hebrew U next year. She said, “Ever since I found my academic passion in politics and international relations I have been drawn to the Middle East. Beyond the incredible number of geopolitical and sectarian issues, it is the history and the mysticism of religion that makes me so enthusiastic to discover all I can about it. Since Hebrew U is itself renowned across many disciplines, this is my chance to discover knowledge.”

Message from President Randall Milner and Executive Director, Dina Wachtel

Inspired by Our Supporters

Dina WachtelRandall Milner

We must begin with a big TODA RABAH, to our board members who so graciously agreed to sponsor this newsletter. Their generosity enables us to communicate to our many supporters the extensive activities and programming done locally by CFHU and lets us publicize our newest collaborations with other organizations.

This past spring, CFHU was able to partner with JNF – the Jewish National Fund. This very successful collaboration came about as a result of local philanthropist Gary Segal’s vision and commitment to Israel. Read on to find the link between underprivileged youth in Israel, JNF and the Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Centre for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Celebrate with us, in these pages, the inspirational generosity of long time CFHU supporters Leon and Rose Marie Glassman. They illustrate some of the history of CFHU

through their ongoing unique story of involvement. Continuing to connect to our history, we welcome new board member Daniel Wosk, a third generation Hebrew U supporter.

Additional collaborations include our ongoing exchange program between UBC and Hebrew U and its exciting renaming as the Mitchell H. Gropper Q.C. Law Faculty Exchange. We are also proud to announce the inauguration of student exchanges through the Go-Global program at UBC, and hope that this program continues for many years into the future. Building community connections, Schara Tzedeck hosted our summer lecture on the uses of marijuana.

As we enjoy the summer season, we are also gearing up toward the High Holidays that are fast approaching (beginning Sept. 24th). Please remember that you can send your Rosh Hashana cards through

CFHU. Give us a call and let us show you how we can look after sending greetings to your family and friends.

Finally, a shout out to all you athletes out there! Join a CFHU team at the next Jerusalem Marathon to be held on March 13, 2015. It will be a fun event that includes 5K/10K/Half Marathon and Full Marathon. Join over 25,000 others in being part of this unique opportunity to walk or run in beautiful Jerusalem. Call us any time for information. We look forward to hearing from you!

In every generation we hope there are people who inspire us as individuals and as a community to do better, to give more of ourselves and to give to the greatest level of our financial capability in order to better the community in which we live. For five decades, Vancouverites have been blessed to have the inspirational examples of Leon and Rose Marie Glassman in many facets of the Jewish community including Federation, Beth Israel Synagogue, Vancouver Talmud Torah, King David High School, JNF and the Louis Brier. As Mr. Glassman celebrates his 90th birthday this year, CFHU honoured his dedication to Hebrew University and his great philanthropic spirit.

In late July, CFHU’s local board of directors used its annual summer social to celebrate Mr. Glassman’s special birthday. His extraordinary commitment to the Hebrew University started many years ago and runs deep.

Mr. Glassman started life in a small town in Southern Saskatchewan and moved to Regina, as a young adult. He was first exposed to Canadian Friends of Hebrew University when Alan Bronfman, the founder of CFHU came to Regina to raise funds for Hebrew University in 1958. “They were selling family endowments for $1,000,

which is like $25,000 today, and they sold 22 in one day. It was a community of fewer than 250 families,” recalled Mr. Glassman. People were proud of the fledgling Jewish State and felt great supporting Hebrew U, which he mentioned is “the mother of all universities in Israel.”

Mrs. Glassman had an early introduction to Hebrew U as well. She was the president of Hillel at the University of Alberta in Edmonton when Bernard Cherrick, the VP for External Affairs at the Hebrew U traveled to the U of A to promote Hebrew U. “I felt so proud that someone came from the new country of Israel to speak to us,” said Mrs. Glassman. She served as a member of the International Board of Governors, is currently an Honourary Governor and an Honourary Fellow of Hebrew University. Mrs. Glassman has remained actively involved in CFHU locally.

The Glassmans have used their involvement in Hebrew University to enjoy

Celebrating Generosity: Leon and Rose Marie Glassman

meeting like-minded supporters at meetings in London, Paris and, of course, Israel. Mr. Glassman noted that they have travelled together to Israel over 40 times, often to attend the Board of Governors of the Hebrew U meetings in Jerusalem. Each visit they took time to tour the country, finding something new every time.

“We are strong Zionists,” said Mrs. Glassman. “Zionists who believe strongly in Jewish education and that means supporting Hebrew University.” Over the years, they have been incredibly supportive. Mr. Glassman said they have an interest in juvenile diabetes research and for four decades have made significant donations to a lab at Hebrew U focussed on diabetes research. Mr. Glassman’s most recent philanthropic gesture at Hebrew U is to fund scholarships. “Being involved…[with Hebrew University] has been a wonderful experience,” said Mr. Glassman. CFHU acknowledges that the feeling is mutual. Happy Birthday and Toda Rabah!

CFHU and JNF Unite: Negev Gala Dinner Supports Peripheral Israeli Youth Spring 2014 saw an exceptional philanthropist inspire wonderful inter-organizational co-operation in Vancouver. Philanthropist Gary Segal was honoured at the JNF Negev Gala dinner. All funds raised at the dinner went to a special program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Known for its high level of innovation in a wide range of areas, Hebrew U has initiated a way to take the spark of scientific curiosity and nurture it in the next generation of researchers. The target of this project is aimed at children who are living in challenging socio-economic conditions. Gary Segal said of the project, “I was looking for an ethical connection to combine education and have a direct impact on youth. This project fit all of the goals.”

The Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Centre at the Hebrew University has developed a program that connects children to a special program of education in science and ecology where graduate students from Hebrew U take and share their passion for sciences and the environment out of the ivory tower. Travelling to socially and geographically peripheral areas of the country, these HU students plant the seed of scientific curiosity in school-children. They are able to inspire groups of future ecologists, environmentalists and scientists.

Gary and Nanci Segal travelled to Israel recently to see for themselves the difference this program is making. “This program captures the students at the right time in their lives–grades 4-7–when they are in their formative, impressionable years. It inspires them to go on to a better life,” said Gary Segal. He was thrilled that schools that have a paucity of resources, like one in Kiriat Ekron, near Rehovot, can access this excellent program to enhance its level of education.

Gary Segal said he was moved by the depth of education and personal growth the Hebrew U program facilitates and said, “It’s wonderful seeing this program in action, to see how relevant it is and how underprivileged youth embrace the subject matter. They have fun because the instructors are so interesting. When they come onto campus, it opens their eyes and they can picture themselves there, which they would not be able to do otherwise.”

Seeing the faces of the children and the excellent work being done in Israel made Gary Segal even more enthusiastic about being honoured by both CFHU and JNF this spring at the JNF Negev Gala Dinner.

“CFHU and JNF approached Gary separately in order to initiate an event in his honour. Gary, who is a great supporter of Israel, and an alumnus of Hebrew University, suggested that both organizations

find a common project. The Meyerhoff program represents an excellent intersection between the talent of Hebrew U and the mission of the JNF,” said Dina Wachtel, Executive Director of CFHU’s Western region. Wachtel continued, “The JNF Negev Gala Dinner raised a significant amount of money that will flow directly to providing outstanding educational opportunities for children and youth on the periphery in Israel. It has been an amazing example of inter-agency co-operation.”

The JNF organizes annual Negev dinners in Vancouver to raise money for JNF projects in Israel. This year, in finding another project that fits with the JNF objectives, the Negev Dinner enabled Vancouverites to demonstrate their love of the State of Israel by showing their support for two important organizations at one excellent event.

Gary Segal enjoyed the first-time experience of being the honouree at a gala dinner and said, “It was both humbling and

gratifying to be honoured.” Attendees felt that the dinner was enormously enjoyable, in great part due to the phenomenal presentation given by Gary Segal. He spoke with

CFHU and JNF Unite: Negev Gala Dinner Supports Peripheral Israeli Youth passion, focus and humour, giving those in attendance plenty of food-for-thought about the nature of philanthropy. He said that caring about others has tremendously enhanced his life and the lives of his family. One of Gary Segal’s personal friends, Dr. Rick Hodes, flew in from Ethiopia specifically to be present at the dinner and the audience had a chance to hear him speak as well. “Dr. Rick” is a world-renowned humanitarian whose work in Ethiopia for the Joint Distribution Committee has been one of the inspirations for Gary Segal’s philanthropy. …continued on page 7

Not only do the Canadian professors gain important links to their counterparts in Israel, but the students at each university also form new relationships and ways of understanding a country through their interactions with

a professor from a foreign country.

The Mitchell H. Gropper Q.C. Law Faculty ExchangeFor the past four years, generous donors from Vancouver have funded a law faculty professorship exchange program between UBC and Hebrew U. It enables an Israeli professor to teach a class in September at UBC and a professor from UBC goes to Hebrew U in the spring to teach Israeli students. Thanks to a dedicated, passionate committee, chaired by the Hon. Justice Bruce Cohen, who got this program off the ground, this exchange has successfully built bridges between Israeli and Canadian faculty and students. The committee was made up of Allen Zysblat, Sam Hanson, Peter Tolensky, Shawn Lewis, Randy Milner and Dennis Pavlich. Now, thanks to the fundraising campaign led by Sam Hanson, funding has been secured for the next five years. In a ceremony at the Law Faculty, the exchange was officially named “The Mitchell H. Gropper Q.C. Law Faculty Exchange” program.

Mitchell Gropper is recognized in the field of law as one of Canada’s top lawyers in his field. He has been an academic, sharing his knowledge with students at Western University and is well known in the Vancouver Jewish community as both a philanthropist and a leader. CFHU is thrilled to see this program bear his name and see it continue for many years to come.

This spring, Professor Cristie Ford travelled to Hebrew U to teach an intensive seminar. She is an expert in the area of international financial management and regulation, an area that has been growing in importance. Her course had 25 students,

a large number for such a seminar. “My classes used to be only business law people but since the financial crisis in 2008, there is no need to explain why it’s important to have financial regulations,” said Ford. She was glad to have the chance to interact with Israeli colleagues with whom she has worked on an international academic journal.

The importance of these types of exchanges is immeasurable. Not only do the Canadian professors gain important links to their counterparts in Israel, but the students at each university also form new relationships and ways of understanding a country through their interactions with a professor from a foreign country. When Dr. Michal Shur-Ofry comes to UBC in September, she looks forward to using her opportunity to enhance her knowledge of the Canadian legal system and exploring collaborations at UBC.

Her area of expertise is intellectual

property, which has many similarities to the Canadian system. She noted, “…the field of intellectual property, in general, is rather harmonized in comparison to the other legal fields.” This makes her course here at UBC topical and applicable to the students she will teach. She will lecture on “Sports, Media and Intellectual Property,” a course she has taught for a number of years at Hebrew U.

For UBC professor Cristie Ford, travelling to Jerusalem to work at Hebrew U and see the country has been enriching both personally and professionally. Shur-Ofry explained her thoughts on this exchange this way. “The opportunity to closely experience a different legal system is always an enriching experience. Doing so at a top university such as UBC is a privilege. I hope the visit will give me new perspectives and will open up new potential collaborations and new avenues for my own research.”

Canadians are trying to make sense of the current government’s vacillations on the legalization of medical marijuana, making anything to do with

marijuana a very hot topic.

Should I Change My Mind About Weed? Informed decisions are made by gathering data from all of the angles and deciding what makes sense from that information. Canadians are trying to make sense of the current government’s vacillations on the legalization of medical marijuana, making anything to do with marijuana a very hot topic. The overwhelming response was therefore not surprising when CFHU had the unique opportunity to present a panel discussion about the benefits and hazards of marijuana with Professor Raphael Mechoulam from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products at the Faculty of Medicine of Hebrew U, Dr. Kathryn Selby, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UBC, and Rabbi Rosenblatt of Congregation Schara Tzedeck.

Moderator Michael Levy started the evening off by introducing Professor Mechoulam of Hebrew University’s department of Natural Products. Prof. Mechoulam is known throughout the world as the father of medical marijuana and his lab accounts for most of the early discoveries in cannabis research. Professor Mechoulam

presented an overview of his nearly 55 years of remarkable research.

Panellist Dr. Kathryn Selby, a local specialist in paediatric developmental neuroscience addressed the dangers of the use of recreational marijuana on the adolescent brain. Her no-nonsense message when asked in the Q & A session about when it is safe for teens to smoke recreationally was, “There is no data on at what age or how much marijuana is safe for brain development. The later and the less, the better.”

Rabbi Rosenblatt of Congregation Schara Tzedeck rounded out the panel with the rabbinic opinion both on recreational and medicinal usage of marijuana. With many examples of inebriation from the Torah as well as modern rabbinical responsa on marijuana related issues and suggested that Judaism does not support recreational use but that it is an obligation to use proven medical treatments to alleviate pain and suffering.

The area of clinical trials is where Professor Mechoulam was able to shed

considerable light. His lab was the first in the world to chemically map the two active compounds in marijuana, THC and CBD. He has been working on this research since the early 1960’s and has identified therapeutic uses for both THC and CBD. As a pioneer in the area, he also expressed his exasperation at the difficulty in executing clinical trials. This “catch 22” situation created by the lack of clinical evidence is a primary concern around legalization and prescription of medicinal marijuana.

With so many questions, it was abundantly clear from the panel that more research needs to be conducted into the pharmacological benefits and recreational hazards of marijuana. There has certainly been tremendous progress in recent years in Professor Mechoulam’s field. Watch for breakthroughs coming out of Hebrew U labs in the future.

Among the many attendees were lovely couple Barbara and Dan Cohen who met in 1961 while studying at Hebrew University. They married the following year.

New Board Member: Daniel WoskDaniel Wosk is deeply connected to his family. He is also forming stronger bonds in the Vancouver Jewish community as a volunteer by joining the board of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University and carrying on a family tradition of involvement. His interest in Hebrew U began during his undergraduate degree in sociology at Concordia when he chose to take a summer and a semester to study in Israel, at Hebrew U.

His family’s connection made it an obvious choice for him. His parents both studied at Hebrew U. His grandfather, Morris Wosk was on the International Board of Governors of Hebrew U and received an honorary Doctorate in 1989. With such a deep connection to Hebrew U, studying at the Rothberg school was an easy decision and according to Daniel, one of the best decisions of his life, so far. “It was the best experience of my life up to that time,” he said.

He found the teaching methods in his classes struck a chord and made the learning that much more memorable and meaningful. “Classes like Archeology of Jerusalem were not based on a lecture as much as field trips. It was less about the exams and more about the archaeology and history.” He admitted that these had never been favourite topics before, but the experiential learning at Hebrew U brought things to life.

Not only did the courses open new paths for Daniel, but also the environment at the Rothberg program at Hebrew U. “I took courses and did things that were out of my comfort zone. I said ‘yes’ to lots of things that gave me lots of memories and friends,” he said. Daniel feels that this openness to new experiences in Israel has had a positive impact on the rest of his life.

Now he has decided to give back by connecting with Hebrew U from Vancouver. As one of the youngest members of the

CFHU board, he hopes to raise the profile of Hebrew U among his peers in the city. Welcome aboard, Daniel!

Focus on Exchange…continued from page 1

National Director, Student & Academic Affairs at CFHU Moshik Galanty, mentioned that over 120 Canadian students will study in the Rothberg International School (English language) program in the upcoming year at Hebrew U. Galanty stressed the importance of these types of exchanges by mentioning, “Students return to Canada with great energy about Israel.” He also touted the benefits of experiential learning the Rothberg’s new Co-Existence program offers. It is a series of courses designed to show students the challenges in the region. The Co-Existence program is a major draw for international students including all of the UBC students going with Go Global. “They go outside of the classroom and see with their own eyes that things are not as simple as they might seem.”

Bill Levine summed up why they chose to help fund a range of students travelling to Hebrew U from UBC, “We are not looking for students who have knowledge or experience in Israel. We would prefer to have students see Israel, her successes and challenges in the world and region, and hopefully draw positive conclusions about Israel.” We thank Bill and Risa Levine for their significant contributions.

CFHU and JNF Unite: Negev Gala Dinner Supports Peripheral Israeli Youth…continued from page 4

Captivated by the influx of Ethiopian Jewry to Israel in the 1990’s, the Segals became involved with Ethiopian Jewry in Israel. Subsequently, they travelled to Ethiopia and were amazed by the work of Dr. Hodes. The Meyerhoff program brings the Segals’ interests together by supporting many children of Ethiopian immigrants, building a stronger future for the State of Israel through education and care for the environment of the land of Israel.

The general and Jewish communities in Vancouver, Israel, and beyond have benefitted from Gary and Nanci Segals’ deep commitment to Tikkun Olam, making the world a better place. Their generous philanthropy is an inspiration to us all. Todah Rabah

to everyone who came and supported the Negev Gala Dinner, thereby supporting a unique program at Hebrew University.
