What is pondless? Pondless is a term that we use where we design a water feature that does not have a pond. At Linton’s, we are seeing this as a growing trend.

Why build a pondless water feature? In a word “low-maintenance”. I think it has to do with lifestyles. People are busier and don’t want to spend time doing maintenance. The ponds that we design and install aren’t considered high maintenance, but they do require some work. There is also the safety factor involved with having a pond where young children could fall. With pondless features, we bury the small water reservoir into the ground, putting our homeowner’s minds at ease.

Most of our clients are interested in features that combine the sound of running water with low maintenance. The up-front costs are a little less than a pond which also makes it more attractive to our customers. The price range for pondless features that we build are $1,000 - $10,000 depending upon the size and features desired. We even have kits for our do-it-yourself customers which

start at $500. The majority of the pondless features that we build also include landscape plantings and the average cost of these are in the $5 -6,000 range.

Pondless waterfalls also are easier to fit in the growing number of small backyards. A pondless waterfall doesn’t take up all the space that a pond does. We are also seeing a trend with corporations who have begun requesting the features as part of “contemplative gardens” where employees spend time during breaks. They can listen and watch the trickling water while surrounded by beautiful flowering plants, trees and shrubs. It provides a nice “escape” for the employees.

These pondless water features are excellent for those who want to create birdwatching opportunities. These features do a great job of attracting wildlife. Divots in the stones create pools where birds drink and bathe. Installing one several years ago for a client, we drilled holes through a huge monster boulder. It was all that our bobcat tractor could handle. It has done a great job of attracting birds for our client. They love it and have even named the boulder “Rocky”.

need to be part of an overall design to be effective. All alone, they consum

e space but don’t create the natural style you may

want. Rock features, stones, and gravel help to soften and bring Nature to an otherwise urban setting. They can evoke a feeling of the orient in sm

aller spaces, whereas a lush, tropical look may

require more space. Step pads and step-able ground covering

paths can give direction to an otherwise mundane square lawn

area. Try to incorporate an appealing distant view into the base design plan when that is possible. The m

erged view expands the perception of your space to be larger than it actually is. Nothing like that available? W

hen screening is not an option, undesirable settings and unsightly objects can be downplayed with a properly placed new focus to draw the eye away from

the offender. Strong lines and bright colors expand a narrow space. Vivid plants or painted objects provide central interest to build supporting beds to encom

pass them. Tiered steps and raised beds of varying

heights both provide changes in ground level, altering the perceived space.

At the landing gear of the alien space ship located in our Garden Centre you’ll find the products from our ‘Research Facility’ in Bristol. The cover-up has been blown and the whistle-blowers have demanded we disclose the presence of these results to the public. This area, previously off-limits, has been opened up to customers classified as ‘Top Plant Collectors.’ We are seeking ‘test sights’ to help our Research Facility. By Ruth Linton I don’t really know who or how or why floral trends are set! However,

I feel the impact of the list, and, agree with almost every flower listed. Of course, they are all beautiful and Linton’s readily has immediate access to all. Here they are:

Calla, Clematis, Dianthus, Hydrangea, Peony, Carnation, Dahlia, Garden Rose, Orchid, and Tulip.

Surprised by Clematis or Dianthus? Look for brightly colored Clematis climbing on a mailbox and smell the fresh fragrance of Dianthus which is similar to a miniature carnation. Dahlias are grown in numerous local gardens with sizes up to a dinner plate.

Also, don’t forget the design value of succulents - ex. Hens & Chicks!A trend now that is often used by Linton’s design team is

personalization. Designs that use something familiar to the recipients’s life make them feel special This is particularly thoughtful when used in a funeral or sympathy remembrance.

Are you one of many who have said “I don’t really care for carnations?” Is it because they are mistakenly associated with an older generation? Or, they are known as an inexpensive flower? By Jackie Weiss, Linton’s Garden Centre manager Hydrangeas are really a great plant. They come in so

many varieties and sizes and colors. They bloom in mid to late summer which is great because by that time all the spring blooming plants have stopped, summer annuals are starting to look a tad tired and Hydrangeas are a punch of color, just when we most need it!

There are 4 main types of Hydrangea species: The most popular is Macrophylla. These are also the most challenging for care. Macrophylla is know as ‘big leaf’; usually pink or blue flowers depending on soil P.H. These need to be pruned at a certain time, and protected from winter wind and temperatures. Paniculata is another very popular Hydrangea. Flowers are mostly white but range in size. Paniculata Hydrangeas can easily be tree form. Pruning and protection differ on Paniculata from the macrophylla Hydrangea. Oakleaf Hydrangeas are in the Quercifolia family. These are some of the biggest plants, sometimes reaching 15-20’, with large white flowers. Arborescens finally is the last variety of the four. These hydrangeas have very large ‘mophead’ flowers. These Hydrangeas usually require the least amount of maintenance.

Dear Style - Rule out design looks that are impractical to really work in small spaces. If woodland themes and meadows are still in your dreams, you can sometimes have them - in part. Miniaturize a concept to recreate a similar flavor with well-planned use of small scale trees, understory shrubs and sweeping perennial beds mixed with annual flowers that hint a woodland’s edge. Water features need to be part of an overall design to be effective. All alone, they consume space but don’t create the natural style you may want. Rock features, stones, and gravel help to soften and bring Nature to an otherwise urban setting. They can evoke a feeling of the orient in smaller spaces, whereas a lush, tropical look may require more space. Step pads and step-able ground covering paths can give direction to an otherwise mundane square lawn area. Try to incorporate an appealing distant view into the base design plan when that is possible. The merged view expands the perception of your space to be larger than it actually is. Nothing like that available? When screening is not an option, undesirable settings and unsightly objects can be downplayed with a properly placed new focus to draw the eye away from the offender.
