THE Y. SO MUCH MORE™ At the Y we are more than a gym. We are a cause dedicated to building strong children, families and communities—inside and out. This includes making our programs available to all regardless of need—because at the Y, everyone belongs. You can help us in the cause. Change a life by making a gift to the YMCA. Because membership dues and program fees support our daily operations, your gift will go directly to serving children and families in need. The impact of your gift will be felt when:

• A kindergartener starts school ready to learn because he attended the Y’s early learning center.

• Kids have a safe, nurturing environment to go to after school and in the summer.

• A dad spends time with his child while coaching basketball.

• A child loses weight–and enjoys it–because at the Y, exercise is play.

MAKE A GIFT. CHANGE A LIFE. Make your gift today at donate.ymcachicago.org.

SUMMER CAMP AT MCCORMICK TRIBUNE YMCA.We believe that children and teens deserve a fun-filled and meaningful summer camp experience. Our camp has a great gym and outdoor space. Our programs are geared toward your child's growth in spirit, mind and body, and reinforce the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. This year we will focus on providing a FUN learning environment.

Our goal this summer is to enhance your child's view of fun. We are focusing our program offerings to include pre-school and teens activities that challenge them to try something new & different. We are creating 3 separate camps in one. Every activity will be age appropriate. All will follow the YMCA standards and abide by the American Camping Association.

Explorers Camp: For ages 4-5, the young preschool camper will learn to, play and grow. The Y will provide your child with a safe and fun place to interact with other children, participate in games, songs, structured activities. The Campers will help develop your preschooler's physical, social and emotional skills. The Y's Kids also get to go on age-appropriate field trips! This group will also take afternoon naps. ALL Y'S KIDS CAMPERS MUST BE POTTY TRAINED.

Adventure Camp: For ages 6-10, we provide campers the opportunity to take part in a variety of classes and activities to grow in spirit, mind and body. Fun games, special theme days, songs, sports, crafts, swimming and field trips are only part of the fun. The trained camp staff works to help campers build self-esteem, experience diversity and develop character.

Teen Camp: For ages 11-14, we provide the same structure and variety of classes as the Adventure Camp, but campers will also be exposed to more learning and off-site activities. Our trained staff will lead the group on field trips in and around the city.

Specialty SessionsThe YMCA Summer Program will be offering Specialty Camp throughout the summer. These specialty camps vary in days and weeks. The session will range from 1 hour a week for 5 weeks or 3-4 hours per day for a given week. Most classes are held in the mornings. Lunch will be included for all participants.

The sport staff will guide the camper through a series of FUN routines and practices. Participants will learn the rules and strategy of each sport and even get an opportunity to play in tournaments arranged by our dynamic counselors. Hard work, learning to work as a team and good sportsmanship will be emphasized as important life skills for life on and off the playing field.

If Summer Camp parents want to sign up their child they must know that there will be a separate fee from Summer camp. These specialties will be offered to all members and program participants. Youth Basketball Clinic Our co-ed youth basketball clinics are great for children to learn the basics of basketball in a warm and inviting environment.

DID YOU KNOW THE Y INVENTED BASKETBALL, RACQUETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL?Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1950, YMCA volunteer Joe Sobek invented racquetball in Greenwich, Connecticut, as an alternative to squash and handball. Like previous YMCA inventors, Sobek was not paid for his invention; he bestowed it as a gift to all who play the game today.

In the 1890s, YMCA instructor William Morgan thought basketball was too strenuous for businessmen, so he blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball, and called his invention “mintonette.” In 1896, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, the name “volley ball” was first used to describe the back-and-forth manner in which the ball flew over the net. Today, more than 46 million Americans play volleyball.
