Central Services Technician Starting This Summer (May 2015)This new career studies certificate, which can be completed in two semesters, will prepare you to be a central services technician responsible for the proper decontamination and sterilization of equipment used in a hospital or community-based surgery center. The current average salary for these employees in Central Virginia is $9-10 an hour, and jobs in this high-demand field are expected to grow 21 percent in our region over the next decade.*

Financial aid to complete this program is available for qualifying students. For more information, contact Linda Starks, PVCC program director and associate professor for surgical technology, at [email protected].

Moreover, PVCC graduates can then complete the National Retail Federation (NRF) Certification exam in Retail Management to advance their careers. Jobs in retail management are expected to grow 4.2 percent by 2022 in Central Virginia with an average annual salary of $39,644 ($19.06 an hour). The retail sector is projected to grow 9.1 percent in Central Virginia by 2022.*

The current average salary for these employees in Central Virginia is $13-15 an hour, and economic projections estimate a 27 percent growth in this field in our region over the next decade.*

Financial aid to enroll in this program is expected to be available for qualifying students. For more information, contact Krystal Green, associate professor and program director for pharmacy technician, at [email protected].

PVCC Student: Candice TomlinsonA Promising Future in Lab Research

Candice Tomlinson

BReturning to College with a Clear Goal

orn and raised in the Northern Virginia area, Candice Tomlinson graduated from high school in 2002 but did not enroll at PVCC until

2013. “I previously attended college but took a break. I was busy with work and family responsibilities, but I knew I would continue to take classes when I found the opportunity.”

She began coming to Charlottesville a few years ago to visit her sister, a student at the University of Virginia. “I decided to take just one class at PVCC to get my feet wet again,” she explained. “Then I took a few more as a part-time student, and now I’m taking four classes.” Candice is pursuing an Associate of Science degree in Physical and Natural Sciences with a Biotechnology Specialization and has a particular interest in the field of human genetics. She hopes to finish her course work at PVCC by the end of 2015, find an internship and eventually work in a research laboratory at a hospital, university, government or private research facility.

A Passion for ResearchCandice has always liked science more than other subjects, especially the lab work and research. “I really like the hands-on approach to learning that labs provide, using tools and instruments and running experiments.”

Applying that passion, she recently teamed up with fellow students Maya Fraser-Butler and Stephen Hazen to develop a written

and videotaped entry to the National Science Foundation’s Community College Innovation Challenge. They proposed an innovative solution to measure water quality in the Rivanna watershed. Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Anne Allison was notified by the Foundation in February that the team’s proposal had advanced to the semifinalist round. Finalists (unavailable at press time) will attend an Innovation Boot Camp this summer in Washington, D.C.

On Being an Adult Learner @ PVCCWorking part-time while taking a full course load, Candice said that it’s the support and flexibility that PVCC provides as well as the financial aid she receives that have allowed her to continue along her path. “PVCC provides a comfortable environment for adult learners like me. They are truly focused on student success, regardless of where you are in life.”

Candice uses the tutoring services provided in the Writing Center and First Quadrant Math Center on campus, which are free with paid tuition for PVCC students. She also uses a convenient online system to make the appointments that she needs with

her instructors. “I would tell anyone who is considering PVCC but hasn’t enrolled yet to just try one class. There is always help available here if you need it.”

The Associate of Science degree in Physical and Natural Sciences – Biotechnology Specialization at Piedmont Virginia Community College prepares students for transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree that will position them to conduct entry-level basic research in a university or private industry science lab. PVCC has guaranteed transfer agreements with top colleges and universities that guarantee admission to PVCC graduates who meet specific academic transfer criteria. For more information, visit www.pvcc.edu/ biotechnology, or contact the Admissions and Advising Center at 434.961.6551 or [email protected].
