TMI students will also have a chance to meet their soon-to-be new classmates. This course is open to both incoming TMI students and non-TMI students entering middle school.

Algebra I Review (non-credit) Week Day: Monday – FridayDate: June 6 - June 24Time: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Price: $400Ages: Open to rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders that have already had Algebra I and need additional instruction to prepare for Geometry or for students that have had Algebra I and Geometry and need additional instruction to prepare for Algebra II/Trig.Description: The course will review the basics of Algebra I and help enhance Algebra I skills in: the real number system; working with signed numbers; understanding the order of operations; simplifying/solving basic equations and radicals; understanding and solving word problems; understanding the concepts of function, domain and range, and linear equations; working with formulas and literal equations; ratios and proportions; simplifying algebraic expressions involving monomials and polynomials; and understanding linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions. The course provides one on one teaching strategies as well as small group and large group discussions and strategies. There is an expectation of 30 minutes of homework per evening, in-class homework and worksheets, and formative and summative examinations.

Writing for Success (non-credit)Week Day: Monday – FridayDate: June 6 - June 24Time: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.Price: $400Ages: Enrollment is open to all rising 9th through 12th graders. Participants can be either TMI or non-TMI students.Description: This course is designed to help students learn, practice and master the required standards of academic writing and thus improve their grades across the TMI curriculum. Students in high school are constantly required to write academic essays; not just in English classes, but in history, religious studies, psychology, and even the hard sciences. However, many students struggle to express their ideas clearly and demonstrate their understanding of the class content because their basic writing skills need work.This class will focus on the following areas with a series of intense writing workshops, peer-review, editing and revision:• Clarifying meaning through the proper use of

grammar and syntax• Using prepositions and pronouns correctly• Writing the most effective thesis• Writing an effective conclusion• Organizing sentences within paragraphs• Organizing paragraphs within essays and

transitioning between ideas• Summarizing and paraphrasing information

effectively• Explaining and analyzing evidence• Integrating quotations and paraphrases smoothly

into the narrative• Finding the best evidence to prove your point• Citing all information correctly according to

various citation methods (MLA, APA, Chicago)• Choosing the best rhetorical strategies to present

information• Editing and revising written work

FOR ALL ACADEMIC CLASSES:

ACADEMIC COURSE ATTENDANCERegular and punctual attendance is required. Only one absence is allowed during each four-week course. No more than two absences are allowed during each six-week course.

CONDUCTThe same standards of conduct expected of TMI students will be required of all students during the summer.

REGISTRATION DEADLINEThe deadline to register for the Academic Classes is May 31, 2016.

ACADEMIC COURSE DRESS CODEPlease note that uniforms are only required for the Academic Courses.

A simple uniform is required for all students attending summer school:• TMI Students can wear their daily dress uniform.• Non-TMI Students can wear the following: — Khaki shorts or long trousers — White shirt with collar or white polo — White or black athletic shoes — White socks

Male students may not wear earrings or hats in the classroom. All students are expected to adhere to good grooming standards. Male hair styles will be worn off the collar and not cover the ears or hang over the eyebrows. Beards and mustaches are not permitted. Female hair styles must be well-groomed. The school retains the right to determine appropriate grooming and uniform standards.

Adventure Training Camp Week Day: Monday – FridayDates: Adventure Training Camp 1: June 6 – June 10Adventure Training Camp 2: June 27 – July 1Adventure Training Camp 3: July 18 – July 22Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.Price: $275 + $20 Rifle Supplies = $295 eachAges: Camp Alpha is open to boys and girls, ages 7 to 10.Camp Bravo is open to boys and girls, ages 11 to 14.Supplies: Bathing suit (one piece for girls or two piece with an outer t-shirt), towel, flip flops, a good pair of running and walking shoes for athletics and hiking, water bottle, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug spray.Description: In our Adventure Training Camp, each camper will be challenged both physically and mentally in a week of fun and adventure training. We will learn all about the basic safety requirements of shooting an air rifle at our indoor shooting range and we will include fun activities and sports to learn about the importance of keeping our bodies healthy such as kickball, dodge ball, water survival, and a trip to the “Panther Pit.” We will teach campers the basic skills that can be utilized in all aspects of life including military drill, map reading and basic orienteering, first aid, water survival, and rifle marksmanship. The camp will finish with a hike up to the top of the local Friedrich Park and a rifle competition where the kids shoot for marksmanship medals.

Advanced 3-Position Rifle Marksmanship CampWeek Day: Monday – FridayDate: July 5 – July 8Time: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.Price: $128 + $20 Rifle Supplies = $148 each (this camp has been prorated as camps will not meet on Monday, July 4th) Ages: Enrollment is available to boys and girls, ages 10-16.Supplies & Attire: Comfortable shooting attire (no skirts or loose fitting clothing, please).Description: Participants will learn more advanced shooting techniques and learn two additional shooting positions: kneeling and standing. At the end of the 5-day course the participants will be involved in a timed shooting competition for the rights to be called the “Expert Marksman.”Participants of this course must have gone to either the Adventure Training Camp or the Basic Rifle Marksmanship Camp.

Basic Rifle Marksmanship Camp Week Day: Monday – FridayDate: Basic Rifle Marksmanship Camp: June 13 – 17Time: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Price: $160 + $20 Rifle Supplies = $180Ages: Enrollment is available to boys and girls, ages 7 to 16.Supplies & Attire: Comfortable shooting attire (no skirts or loose fitting clothing, please).Description: Participants of this course will learn the basics of rifle safety and indoor range operations. Shooters will begin to understand the fundamentals of accurate marksmanship and gradually increase their ability to shoot targets in the prone supported and prone unsupported position. At the end of the 5-day course, the participants will compete for Marksmanship medals.

The focus of the week of training will be on pistol familiarization and proper pistol safety measures. Campers will learn the basic NRA pistol safety guidelines and every part of the pistol. Participants are required to pass the mandated written safety exam before being able to handle any firearm. Campers will then learn the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship and proper range procedures to be able to have a basic understanding of conduct on any range they visit. By the end of the week, campers will have learned to shoot in three positions: the isosceles, the modern isosceles, and the one-handed precision stance. On Friday, the students will compete for the opportunity to claim their spot as the camps “Top Shot” and receive a pistol marksmanship medal. All other students who qualify have the opportunity to earn a pistol qualification badge at three levels: Marksman, Sharpshooter, and Expert.

Basic Land Navigation Camp Week Day: Monday – FridayDates: Basic Land Navigation Camp 1: June 13 – June 17Basic Land Navigation Camp 2: June 20 – June 24 Time: Basic Land Navigation Camp 1: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.Basic Land Navigation Camp 2: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Price: $160 + $10 Map Supplies = $170Ages: Enrollment is available to boys and girls, ages 7 to 15.Attire & Supplies: Please wear comfortable attire (no skirts or loose fitting clothing, please) and bring sun block, water bottle, hat, and sunglasses. Maps, a compass, and snacks will be provided to all participants.Description: Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation and is for all ages and degrees of fitness and skill. Campers will learn the basics of orienteering, including locating control points by using a map and compass in order to navigate through the woods. Participants will begin with basic map reading and terrain identification, identification of common topographic symbols used during map reading, reading and plotting grid azimuths on a map using a protractor, calculating distance and direction, establishing a personal walking and running pace count, basic skills utilizing a lensatic compass, negotiating a standard orienteering course, and negotiating two land navigation courses in two parks around San Antonio. This course is based off the U.S. Army training and is what you need to know to be an orienteer.

Players will have the opportunity to encompass all these skills into game situations while learning the importance of team play.

Please note that this camp is geared towards students who have already begun to learn an instrument who would like to improve their skills and knowledge.Description: The Young Rembrandts’ Music and Art Camp runs for two weeks, and will focus on music performance, as well as artistic expression. On the art side, campers will focus on several different artists. Each day, they will create a large, original pastel drawing replicating a famous artist’s masterpiece. Each day will challenge campers with the pastel media, along with canvas and pottery. During the musical portion of the camp, campers will learn 3 new pieces to present at a final recital. Campers should be prepared to master their skills with this music boot camp!

YR/CE Week 1: Anime Workshop & Machines in MotionYoung Rembrandts: Anime & Manga WorkshopWhy sit in front of the TV and watch cartoons when you can draw amazing characters and awesome scenes of your very own? Join us for five, action-packed days during this Anime and Manga Drawing Workshop. Campers will create dazzling illustrations influenced by popular Japanese anime and manga themes. Colorful characters with expressive personalities jump off of the page!Camp Einstein: Machines in MotionPick up speed in this camp all about the motion in cars, planes, and watercraft. The engineering-minded camper will love building their very own rollercoaster and enjoy launching from their crazy catapults! Campers investigate Newton’s Laws of Motion and put these theories to the test! What’s the difference between kinetic and potential energy? Inertia and momentum? Discover the answers in this exciting class!YR/CE Week 2: African Safari & Little DoctorsYoung Rembrandts: African SafariGo on a Safari adventure with Young Rembrandts this summer! In five days we will draw a variety of African animals in various scenes with different media. We will explore the African Safari through the fun technique of cartoon. We will even challenge our artistic talents by creating 2 large scenes – one in a graphic style and another completed with pastel chalks and canvas. Our exploration through Africa allows for a bounty of adventure and creativity!Camp Einstein: Little DoctorsCampers take a whirlwind trip through medical school in this exciting doctors and veterinarian’s camp! Students will love growing bacteria and watching it wiggle under a microscope, dissecting frogs, and building prosthetic hands in our anatomy lab! Campers will study how our bodies work by making model lungs, investigating our senses, and learning how to measure blood pressure! We will explore our animal friends in the veterinary science lab, and learn how to milk a cow!

**YR/CE Week 3: Ocean Life & Universe ExplorersYoung Rembrandts: Ocean LifeFive, fun-filled days await our students as we explore ocean life as they learn to draw and color with pastels. We will create detailed, pastel compositions on each day, focusing on a different ocean-themed subject. We will draw eye-catching sea stars along the shoreline and a pair of vibrant clown fish. We will illustrate a sea turtle with bold patterns, a blue crab and a wondrous scene of jellyfish. These pastel drawings will reward students with a great sense of pride and accomplishment. Camp Einstein: Universe ExplorersLet’s explore this incredible universe of ours! Ever wonder why there are tidal waves or how things float? We dive deep into the abyss of our oceans to discover its hidden treasures and creatures. Then we will blast off into the vastness of outer space to uncover a whole new world! Campers will learn about the magic inside a star and build their own freezing comet!**YR/CE Week 4: Worldly Art Designs & CSI ForensicsYoung Rembrandts: Worldly Artistic DesignsExplore multicultural art in Worldly Artistic Designs. We begin our world tour in Mexico as we draw several colorful doorways. We journey to Africa to explore the intricacies of African crafts. We’ll move on to design Paisley patterns, an ancient design embraced by many cultures. Then, Asian paper lanterns will shed light on the Far Eastern design styles. Our travels end in Russia as we illustrate a mainstay of Russian architecture – the onion dome. We will work on pottery as well!Camp Einstein: CSI ForensicsPut on your detective hat, and become a CSI Investigator as we explore topics in forensic science, evidence collection and techniques, and problem solving. Observe a crime scene, and take fingerprints and footprints. Question subjects, and perform DNA and blood analysis. Through the use of science and technology, discover clues left behind that may be invisible to the naked eye! From analyzing handwriting to taking teeth molds, students will enjoy this hands-on camp where they will develop their detective skills!

YR/CE Week 5: Passport to Pastels & Engineering Inventions and InnovationsYoung Rembrandts: Passport to PastelsGrab your passport and join us for adventurous fun as we explore many locations and experience a new medium - pastels and clay with acrylic paint. Through art, we will travel to different locales to inspire each day’s pastel creation. Each day, we will create a 12x18 drawing in pastel chalks and watercolor. A frame will be the proper place for display!Camp Einstein: Engineering Inventions & InnovationsTake a whirlwind journey with us as we study fascinating inventors and recreate their inventions! This class is all about tinkering and understanding how things work. Students form questions, collect data, observe details, and develop an explanation for how their inventions work. We will discover how Edison perfected the light bulb, recreate Galileo’s powerful telescope, and construct a radio that Tesla would be proud of!YR/CE Week 6: Colorful Critters & Culinary ChemistsYoung Rembrandts: Colorful CrittersAnimal lovers rejoice - an all new, all pastel and pottery workshop is here! **YR/CE Week 7: World of Horses & Explosive ScienceYoung Rembrandts: World of HorsesFun-filled days await our campers as we explore the wonderful world of horses. Horses are not only graceful and majestic animals, but are also excellent subjects to draw and color. In our World of Horses Workshop, campers will learn how to draw horses of all shapes, sizes, and styles. We’ll use different media to create colorful compositions. On the final day we will create a large drawing with pastels and canvas. Challenging drawings like this will reward our campers with a greater sense of accomplishment!Camp Einstein: Explosive ScienceGet to know your world on an elemental level! Experiment with the periodic table and the explosive reactions that occur. Watch as the instructors blow things up and explain why cataclysmic reactions happen! Campers get involved with their own foaming, spewing, exploding experiments. Ever wonder how a rocket works? Learn all about propellants and combustion as we transform into a crazy chemist in this exciting camp!

TMI Band Camp Week Day: Monday – Friday Dates: July 25 - July 29Time: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Price: $150Ages: Available to TMI and non-TMI students entering 7th through 12th grades who play any woodwind, percussion, or brass instrument.Supplies: An instrument in good, working condition and a pencil.Description: The TMI Band Camp is open to students of all skill levels that have completed at least one year of beginner band. Our goal is to provide experiences for musical and personal growth for every student that attends our camp. Whether you are an aspiring middle school instrumentalist or an accomplished high school performer, you will discover new challenges to further your growth as a musician.

Robotic Engineering Week Day: Monday – Friday Dates: Robotic Engineering Week 1: June 13 – June 17Robotic Engineering Week 2: June 27 – July 1Robotic Engineering Week 3: July 11 – July 15 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Price: $285 (includes $10 supply fee)Ages: Available to boys and girls, ages 10 to 15Supplies & Attire: Water bottle, bathing suit, and towel. Attire is casual.Description: In Robotic Engineering, campers will work in small groups with direct teacher instruction and with a self-paced learning platform. We will learn structural engineering concepts, the engineering design and iterative process, and graphical programming using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3. Campers will have the opportunity to create robots that complete tabletop challenges and compete in our Friday Sumo event. Due to self-paced curriculum, this course is appropriate for campers that are 10+ years old and either beginner (Level 1) or intermediate (Level 2) students. If you have experience with the LEGO Mindstorms EV3, you will start with the intermediate (Level 2) curriculum.

If you have experience with the LEGO WeDo system you will start with the intermediate (Level 2) curriculum.

Game Coding (Minecraft) Week Day: Monday – Friday Dates: June 20 – June 24 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Price: $305 (includes $30 supply/textbook fee)Ages: Available to boys and girls, ages 10 to 15Supplies: Water bottle, bathing suit, and towel. Attire is casual.Description: In Game Coding (Minecraft), campers will work under teacher direction and with a self-paced learning platform. Campers will be introduced to computer programming concepts using Code.org and LearnToMod.com’s curriculum. Both curriculums use Blockly and Javascript to teach coding and programming concepts. Participants will be able to use their PC or Mac Minecraft accounts for programming projects. Those without PC or Mac Minecraft accounts can use a classroom account.

Architectural Engineering Week Day: Monday – Friday Dates: Architectural Engineering Week 1: June 20 – June 24Architectural Engineering Week 2: July 11 – July 15Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Price: $295 (includes $20 supply fee)Ages: Available to boys and girls, ages 5 to 10Supplies & Attire: Water bottle, bathing suit, and towel. Attire is casual.Description: In Architectural Engineering, campers will work independently and in small groups with a self-paced learning platform. They will learn structural and architectural engineering concepts. Campers will construct architectural structures with Balsa wood, brick, loose-LEGO bricks, and LEGO Architectural kits. Everyone will get to explore, through self-pacing, many of the world’s architectural wonders and different bridge-types through the building and drawing process. Our new curriculum supports both new and returning campers. Those that have no experience will use the beginner (Level 1) curriculum while those who have either “camped” with us before or already have some experience will use the intermediate (Level 2) curriculum.

This learn through playing class will allow students to work on architecture, Redstone, and crafting techniques. Attire is casual.Description: FIRST LEGO LEAGUE is a nationally based robotics competition that uses the LEGO Mindstorms robotic system. If you want to learn how to compete in this robotics and engineering competition, then join us for an FLL-focused week. Campers will learn how to use the judge’s rubrics to their advantage, strategize their robotic game, and prepare to have a great time! Campers will develop their robotic game skills using previous years’ challenges. This camp is appropriate for incoming 4th grade to 8th grade students, due to FLL age/grade-level rules.

Underwater ROV & Electronics Week Day: Monday – Friday Dates: July 18 – July 22 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Price: $375 (includes $100 supply fee)Ages: Available to boys and girls, ages 10 to 15Supplies & Attire: Water bottle, bathing suit, and towel. Attire is casual.Description: Come learn the basics of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and electronics in this class that will focus on Underwater ROVs. Campers will learn the basics of DC electrical systems, tele-operated systems, lead-free soldering, and underwater engineering. We will work independently and in small groups building SeaPerch underwater ROVs. This camp is appropriate for 10+ years old students and students must pass a basic safety-test on equipment prior to equipment usage. Campers will take home their own SeaPerch underwater ROV.
