Registration begins on April 9, 2018 and ends June 12, 2018 • No Friday ClassesENRICHMENT CLASSES: Session One - July 9 - July 19, 2018 Session Two - July 23 - August 2, 2018 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday We hope you will share our enthusiasm for the Elementary Summer Academy 2018. It can be your child’s link to enrichment, exploration, and excitement. If you elect to have your child participate in one of our programs, please register early as space is limited. Return your completed registration form and check (made payable to your home-base school) to your child’s school no later than Tuesday, June 12. All Summer Academy enrichment classes will be held at Echo Lake Elementary School. Transportation will be provided from each elementary school to Echo Lake Elementary School. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from the bus stop and should remain with their children while waiting for transportation to the Summer Academy site. Expectations for students at Summer Academy bus stops are identical to expectations for students at bus stops during the regular school year. Please note that bus drivers will not be able to wait at elementary schools in the afternoon; therefore, it is imperative that parents arrive promptly to pick up students. Please review the summer sites and home-base schools. Additional information concerning transportation will be provided to students who enroll. FOOD SERVICE: Lunch will be provided at Echo Lake Elementary free of charge through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program. MEDICAL INFORMATION pertaining to students who attend Summer Academy must be communicated to the Summer Academy Nurse. All medication, prescription and over the counter, MUST be brought to Summer Academy by a parent/guardian with the prescribed orders. If your student has medication at their home school, the orders may be obtained from that nurse before June 15, 2018 but must be brought to Summer Academy by a parent/guardian. SESSION 2: JULY 23 - AUGUST 2, 2018ART ENRICHMENT - This program is designed to foster artistic growth and creative thinking. Students will study art through a variety of 2- and 3-dimensional projects. Various materials will be explored and personal expression will be encouraged! ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 4-5MUSIC, MOVEMENT, AND TECHNOLOGY - This exciting class offers students an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities in which they will sing, dance, create, explore, and express themselves through music, movement, and technology. They will be grouped by grade levels (rising grade 1; rising grade 2; and rising grade 3) and will attend three classes each day. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 1-3STEM-tastic Opportunity! 2-3 Get a jumpstart on mastering STEM skills by participating in creative problem-solving activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics! This course offers an opportunity for boys and girls to work collaboratively while discovering solutions to a variety of hands-on challenges. Students will integrate critical thinking and elements of design as they pursue creative solutions in a highly engaging way. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 2-3STEM-tastic Opportunity! 4-5 - See description above. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 4-53C’s: Create, Code, and think Critically - This exciting course will provide opportunities for stu-dents to create and think critically as they explore computer programming! Students will begin by learning the fundamentals of coding and how to use Scratch, a programming language, to create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. They will also use web-based programming applications and input/output devices to design and create a variety of projects. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising grades 4-5Welcome to DolphinFest 2018! - We are so excited to have new dolphins from around the world join us this year! This year’s convention will be held in beautiful Macapa, Brazil. All dolphins will have access to this lovely city via the Atlantic Ocean. Your task will be to design a dolphin with recyclables and participate in this unique adventure. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising third and fourth grade students identified for gifted services in Henrico County Public Schools.WORLD OF LANGUAGES – FRENCH - Parlez-vous français? Come join the fun as you learn French in a fun and exciting way. Sing, dance, learn a second language, and make new friends in the process. Explore the world of the French language and culture as you take a virtual trip to Paris and stroll down the Champs-Elysées, climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower, and eat French pastries. Through an interactive approach, students will learn some basic language while experiencing the culture and customs of the French-speaking world. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 4-5WORLD OF LANGUAGES – SPANISH - ¡Bienvenidos amigos! Are you ready to learn Spanish in a fun and exciting way? Are you ready to sing, dance, laugh and learn a second language? Explore the world of the Spanish language and culture this summer. Listen to music, dance the Flamenco, and learn about bull fighting. SESSION 1: JULY 9 - JULY 19, 2018ARTS INSTITUTE - This exciting class will offer students an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities in which they will create, explore, and express themselves while learning more about the arts. Students will be grouped by grade levels (rising grade 1; rising grade 2; and rising grades 3 and 4) and will attend an art, music, and movement class each day. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Rising Grades 1-4BRIDGE BUILDING - During this hands-on class, students will work in teams to develop a com-pany and build bridges! Students will learn about bridge structures and will become “engineers” as they work collaboratively to build bridges using different materials. Teams will compete in a variety of ways including final bridge design, cost, and functionality. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS: Ris-ing fourth and fifth grade students identified for gifted services in Henrico County Public Schools.DIGITAL CREATIONS - During this hands-on class, students will learn how to create digital multimedia projects. Students will explore and demonstrate their creative realms using a variety of applications such as Google Apps, Office, and Adobe products. ATTENDANCE AND TARDY REQUIREMENTS:Attendance during Summer Academy 2018 is very important. One day of summer school is equal to approximately one week of regular school. Parents are asked not to make vacation plans which conflict with summer school dates.• Students who are absent in excess of three (3) days, EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, will be

withdrawn from summer school.• Three tardies or three early dismissals will be counted as one absence, regardless of the

amount of time involved. Any tardy after 10:30 a.m. or any early dismissal prior to 10:30 a.m. will be counted as a half-day absence.

• There can be NO EXCEPTIONS to this requirement, REGARDLESS OF THE REASONS.MAKE-UP WORK:• Make-up work applies ONLY to EXCUSED absences. Obviously, there is no opportunity

to make up work beyond three (3) days because if a student misses more than 3 days, excused or unexcused, he/she is withdrawn. (See Attendance/Tardy Requirements above.)

• In order to be able to make up work on any of the three days allowed, students must bring a valid note signed by a parent or guardian stating the reason for absence.

CUMULATIVE TESTS:• Students will not be allowed to take cumulative tests early or to make up these tests after the

testing period.DISCIPLINE:• Summer Academy 2018 is a privilege, not a requirement. There is much to be done in a

compressed time frame and, therefore, little time for behavior problems.• Students referred to the summer administrator for violations of discipline may be withdrawn

from Summer Academy.• Copies of the Summer Academy 2018 discipline regulations will be distributed on the first

day of the summer session to be signed by both the student and a parent or guardian and returned to the school. Residents and non-residents will follow Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct.

REFUND PROVISIONS:• No refunds will be given after June 28, 2018.• Henrico County Public Schools reserves the right to cancel classes for which there is

insufficient enrollment. Refunds will be given for courses which are not offered due to insufficient enrollment.

• When a class reaches its maximum enrollment, registrations will be returned in reverse date order.

• No refunds will be authorized for students withdrawn for disciplinary reasons or excessive absences.

RESTRICTIONS:• Only students who have successfully completed Grade 8 may enroll in the high school

Summer Academy courses. • Online summer courses are not intended for student recovery.FOOD SERVICE:Lunch may be provided free of charge through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program depending on a site’s eligibility status. Eligibility can vary, so please check with a Summer Academy coordinator at the site to verify. Barbering teaches students the basics of hair, scalp and skin care. Students practice on mannequins to hone their new skills and discover what it takes to operate a barber shop.

Computer-Aided Drafting and 3D Animation is an introductory course where students gain an understanding of how to create drawings, 3D models and animations using the latest CAD software.

Computer Systems Technology is an introductory program for students who enjoy building, repairing, or troubleshooting PC computers, basic electronics and networking.

Cosmetology teaches students the foundation of the professional care of the hair, skin and nails. Students will practice techniques needed to perform these services in a salon setting environment.

Criminal Justice explores the world of modern law enforcement. Learn to use police equipment to solve crimes and keep order. Topics include crime scene investigation, using police tactical gear, fingerprinting and common patrol tactics.

Culinary Arts students participate in creative activities related to following recipes and cooking. Learn basic culinary techniques, menu planning and explore culinary careers.

Diesel Technologies introduces students to the fundamentals of diesel equipment technology. Learn basics of diesel vehicles such as firetrucks, school buses and ambulances.

Economics and Personal Finance is a 4-week rigorous and mathematically intensive course covering economics and personal finance that may require students to spend up to 6 hours per day in order to be successful. The course satisfies the state’s economics and personal finance requirements as well as the online experience and certification requirements for high school graduation. The W!SE Financial Literacy Certification post exam is administered in the course. Students will receive college credit for this class. Students who successfully complete this class with a C or better and later enroll in Longwood University as a degree-seeking student will receive a 3-credit scholarship.

High School General Information

TRANSPORTATION:The school division does not provide transportation for high school students attending Summer Academy 2018. Parents of high school students are responsible for reliable transportation to and from school.ATTENDANCE AND TARDY REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance during Summer Academy 2018 is very important. One day of summer academy is equal to approximately one week of regular school. Parents are asked not to make vacation plans which conflict with summer academy dates.• Students who are absent in excess of three (3) days, EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, will be

withdrawn from summer school for one-credit classes. Only one absence is allowed for semester classes including driver education.

• Three tardies or three early dismissals will be counted as one absence, regardless of the amount of time involved. Any tardy after 10:30 a.m. or any early dismissal prior to 10:30 a.m. will be counted as a half-day absence.

• There can be NO EXCEPTIONS to this requirement, REGARDLESS OF THE REASONS. These attendance and tardy requirements are not meant to be punitive. All schools must maintain and enforce a minimum number of student hours per class in order to retain their accreditation. MAKE-UP WORK:

• Make-up work applies ONLY to EXCUSED absences. Obviously, there is no opportunity to make up work beyond three (3) days because if a student misses more than 3 days, excused or unexcused, he/she is withdrawn. (See Attendance Requirements above.)

• In order to be able to make up work on any of the three days allowed, students must bring a valid note signed by a parent or guardian stating the reason for absence.

EXAMS:• Students will not be allowed to take exams early or to make up exams after the exam period.

Exams are given on the last day of the course.DISCIPLINE:• Summer Academy 2018 is a privilege, not a requirement. There is much to be done in a compressed

time frame and, therefore, little time for behavior problems.• Students referred to the summer administrator for violations of discipline may be withdrawn from

Summer Academy.• Copies of the Summer Academy Discipline Regulations will be distributed on the first day of the

summer session to be signed by both the student and a parent or guardian and returned to the school. Residents and non-residents will follow Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct.

REFUND PROVISIONS:• No refunds for regular summer courses will be given after June 28, 2018.• No refunds will be given to students who drop online Health/PE after May 30, 2018.• Henrico County Public Schools reserves the right to cancel classes for which there is insufficient

enrollment. Refunds will be given for courses which are not offered due to insufficient enrollment.• When a class reaches its maximum enrollment, registrations will be returned in reverse date order.• No refunds will be authorized for students withdrawn for disciplinary reasons or excessive absences.• No refund will be given to students who drop online core class after June 5, 2018.FOOD SERVICE:Lunch may be provided free of charge through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program depending on a site’s eligibility status. Eligibility can vary, so please check with a Summer Academy coordinator at the site to verify. Students may also have the option to bring in their own snacks.MEDICAL INFORMATION pertaining to students who attend Summer Academy must be communicated to the Summer Academy Nurse. All medication, prescription and over the counter, MUST be brought to Summer Academy by a parent/guardian with the prescribed orders. If your student has medication at their home school, the orders may be obtained from that nurse before June 15, 2018 but must be brought to Summer Academy by a parent/guardian. High school students should register at the home-base school beginning April 9, 2018 and no later than June 7, 2018 as certain regular summer classes will close (i.e. Physical Education, Driver Education, etc.).
