Summer Camps at Rocky Hill School Rocky Hill School’s Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) offers weeklong camps for children to learn and explore through a variety of experiences and opportunities. SEA is a safe and fun environment and offers both full and half-day programs, allowing children the opportunity to choose a number of exciting offerings. Extended day options are available both before and after camp, giving families the flexibility to work around busy schedules. SEA is open to the public.

Welcome to Rocky Hill School’s 2015 Summer Enrichment Academy!

Rocky Hill School’s Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) offers three types of camps for ages 3-17: Traditional Day, Specialty, and Academic.

Options designed especially for high school-age children (13+) include: Study Smarter, SPOT Tennis, Deckhands Theatre, USA Chess, Video Game Creation, and Counselor-In-Training.

Our energetic staff consists of experienced teachers, highly motivated college students, exceptional high school students, and a group of enthusiastic Middle School counselors in training, many of whom were SEA campers themselves (see page 19 for a staff directory).

• Register by filling out the application form (available at www.rockyhill.org/sea) and returning it to Rocky Hill School along with a non-refundable deposit of $100.

• Applications received by June 1, 2015 will have the $25 processing fee waived.

Counselor-In-Training (CIT) (page 19)Students entering grades 6-8 with outgoing personalities, senses of humor, and strong desires to lead by example will supervise campers and help in smaller group activities, while taking direction from SEA staff. CITs must have excellent speaking skills and enjoy working with younger children. Counselors will be trained and certified in Infant, Child, and Adult CPR.

CRITTER CAMP

Critter camp is a fun-filled traditional day camp experience with morning activities in art, literature, imaginative play and cooking. Each afternoon is spent at Rocky Hill School’s private lifeguarded beach. Through a rich selection of engaging and developmentally appropriate activities, each camper’s day is a balance of structured and child-initiated learning experiences.

CAMP

Junior Mariners is designed to engage 6- and 7-year-old campers with a wide variety of hands-on activities in sports, art, environmental science, Lego animation, and cooking. Junior Mariners end their day at Rocky Hill School’s private, lifeguarded beach, where campers are closely supervised as they explore the ecologically rich and pristine waterfront.

MARINERS CAMP

Mariners campers will choose from various arts, crafts, sports, musical, cooking, dance, water sport activities, gardening and many more! Each block to choose from will run 45-60 minutes depending on which option is chosen. Mariners will also spend time at Rocky Hill School’s private, lifeguarded beach, where campers are closely supervised as they explore the ecologically rich and pristine waterfront.

EXPLORERS

Is your child interested in the great outdoors and wildlife? Does he or she like to get hands-on with the critters of Narragansett Bay and its watershed? If so, they’ll love Marine Explorers Camp!

During Marine Explorers camp, we’ll visit the coast and other unique locations in Rhode Island. This camp offers children an opportunity to explore tidal pools full of marine animals and interesting seaweeds; venture through salt marshes with myriad waterfowl, fish, and crustaceans; and visit some of Rhode Island’s most pristine beaches. Our explorations will include a barrier beach, a dune environment, and a salt marsh.

STINGRAYSSOCCER CAMP

Campers build self-esteem and confidence while expressing themselves as positive soccer players in a fun and supportive environment. Players will gain better technique and understanding of the game, leading to a higher success on the field. Develop your skills through drills and demonstrations of proper technique.

SPOT TENNIS CAMP

This is a fun camp with games and drills based on the age and level of play. Ages 6-7 will be introduced to strokes, ball tracking, and movement skills with an emphasis on fun and safety. Kids play on a smaller court; use kid-friendly balls, and smaller rackets. Ages 7-16 will enjoy fun, game-based drills that include volleys, ground strokes, serve, and return of serve.

Ages: Girls entering 1st - 9th Grade (7-14 years old)

This fun, experiential leadership development program translates complex theory of group dynamics into accessible knowledge that is easy to understand. Young leaders apply this knowledge to examine the collaborative and altruistic behaviors of leaders in a fun and dynamic way. Participants will play games, explore mindfulness practices, design outdoor team challenges, identify personal leadership styles, and build confidence through our high ropes course experience! Participants will emerge better prepared to collaborate effectively, and utilize appropriate skills in order to lead others in a variety of settings.

LEAD THE WAY FIELD HOCKEY

Ages: Girls entering 1st - 9th Grade (7-14 years old)

Rocky Hill School partners with Lead the Way, New England’s Premier Field Hockey Organization, to offer an exceptional girls field hockey camp experience. Beginers to advanced players entering 1st - 9th grade are encouraged to register and will be grouped accordingly to thier age and ability.

The camp offers a great way for girls to learn and improve on their basic fundamental skills and learn advanced skill. The goal of the camp is to provide an opportunity to teach field hockey in a fun and supportive environment, as well as an emphasis on developing leadership skills. Girls will also enjoy swimming, team building and kayaking.

JR. KAYAKING

This kayaking program is specifically geared for the novice paddler. Campers will be using the Kea, an 8-foot sit-on-top kayak, which is perfect for children to learn basic kayaking techniques while exploring the estuary at Rocky Hill School.

KAYAKING

The kayaking program introduces students to the pleasures of quiet water kayaking. Using sit-on-top kayaks, the students are immersed (literally) in the basic skills of kayaking. The week begins on campus with lessons in proper boat handling, paddling techniques, and rollover recovery. The class will travel to an off-campus location on the last day, exposing the students to a variety of conditions from open water on the Bay, to inland streams and rivers.

INTRO TOKARATE

This program is designed to introduce children to the exciting world of Kempo Karate. All of the children will be taught beginner techniques such as blocking, kicking, and striking. They will also enjoy a daily arts and crafts project aimed at exposing the children to the Japanese culture. Equipment is provided, and includes a uniform and belt. Students will keep their equipment at the end of the session.

SAILING I

Beginning sailors will learn the basics of sailing. Parts of the boat, sail trim, safety, knot tying, seamanship, capsizing recovery, rules of the road, and boat handling will all be explored in this class. Campers will be taught on our Excite sailboats. Cost: $195

Sailing II will have a strong emphasis on boat handling, upwind sailing, and seamanship. Campers in Sailing II must have some prior sailing instruction. Cost: $195

FAITH HILL FARM

HORSEBACK RIDING

Faith Hill Farm provides safe, friendly school horses and ponies for children of all riding levels to learn on. Beginners will learn fundamentals of English riding. Intermediate and advanced riders will learn the skills they need to further their riding education. While not riding, campers will engage in daily care of a horse including feeding, grooming and bathing, safety precaution, identify and learning conformation of a horse, identification of breeds, identify and understand use of tack, making horse crafts, playing games, and much more.

Campers will need proper riding attire: close fitting pants (jeans, riding breeches if possible), a hard-sole shoe with a heel (no sneakers) and a well fitting hunt cap. ASTM approved safety helmets are available. Campers must bring lunch, drinking water, sunscreen, change of clothes and sneakers for when not riding.

Campers will need to be dropped off at Faith Hill by 9:00am and Pick up at 2:30pm. There will also be a performance on the Friday of camp beginning at 10:30 a.m. each week.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Children will participate in several craft techniques including a simple stuffed “critter”. Fabric, wood, and paper are just some of the materials that will be used. There is an ever-changing collection of projects in this camp that offers different experiences from year to year.

CERAMICS

During this pottery session, students will work with clay on a potter’s wheel. They will be introduced to beginning pottery techniques including pinch pots, sgraffito tiles, sculpture, and coil construction. The students will have the opportunity to choose their projects within the guidelines of the skill set.

ADIRONDACK CHAIRS

This course introduces students to simple carpentry skills through the construction of Adirondack chairs. Campers will be working each day in the kitchen of Rocky Hill School alongside Chef Rob DeLuise. Chef Rob will be instructing the students on healthy eating and preparation choices with fresh fruits and vegetables. Students will also be visiting a farmer’s market on Friday for a fresh choice.

This camp is exactly what you think, Rocky Hill’s own pinewood derby! Students will learn rules, techniques, and designs within a weeklong, fun-filled derby. We will start with Lego derby cars, moving on to precut forms and finishing with designing, cutting and shaping a block of pine. No trophies will be awarded but tons of fun and lots of races will be had!

GAME BUILDING

Campers will spend each day working with various materials to create their own chess & checker board. They will also build and customize all of the pieces that accompany it. This will be a keepsake that you will treasure for years.

WOOD-WORKING

This course introduces students to simple carpentry skills through the construction of simple, but fun creations. Students will be instructed in the use of basic hand tools, measuring techniques and precise measuring. Each student will complete his or her own creations to bring home and enjoy. All materials will be supplied.

SEWING

For students with some sewing experience, this camp will go over the basic use of the sewing machine, some new techniques, hand sewing and embroidery while working on felt critters and a quilted tote bag. Time will also be spent working on simple quilt squares, which may be used as part of the tote bag or as a stand-alone piece. Students are required to bring in at least 1-1/2 yards of two different fabrics, plus four squares of felt. Cost: $330

DECKHANDSTHEATER

Storybook Theater

For beginning actors and stage veterans. We will spend 2 weeks exploring the fundamentals of theater (blocking, script work, set design, costumes, and make-up). We will choose our favorite storybooks and through the magic of theater, bring those stories to life! Each day will be a full experience of theater and dance games, rehearsals, snack, and lunch time as well as time to swim and let loose at the waterfront. Parents, friends, and relatives will be invited to share the fruits of our labor at a closing day performance.

Show Stoppers

Every wonder what it feels like to be a kid on Broadway? Now’s your chance to find out! We will take some of the best scenes and songs ever written for children onstage. We will pull them all together into 2 show-stopping, full length performances! Campers will work on scenes, solos, company numbers, dance, sets, costumes, and make-up. They will also have time to take a swim at the waterfront each day. On July 31st, the final day of camp, there will be a matinee performance for all the other campers and then an evening show for the community. This camp is open to novice as well as experienced actors, dancers, and theater crew!

iMOVIE

Students will learn the in’s and out’s of iMovie while filming, acting and creating their own iMovie. Rocky Hill’s iPads will be used during the filming and editing process. Students should bring their own ideas, props, and talent to this highly sought after camp.

MINECRAFT

In these sessions students will learn how to play Minecraft and have fun exploring and building structures within this “sandbox” game. Campers will work individually and collaboratively on achieving set objectives within the game. Instruction will be individualized, and plenty of time for open play will be included.

LEGOANIMATION

This is the next new level in our LEGO enthusiast camp. Each day, students will be working with a theme and animating it in Rocky Hill’s Mac Computer Lab with both photography and software. Students will be working on a class project and upon the conclusion of the class; participants will help assemble a disk with their work to take home.

LEGO EXPLORERS

Calling all beginning LEGO maniacs! Students will be guided through various projects including Pirate Lagoon, Dino-Island and Monster Madness. At the week’s end, participants will help assemble a photo log of their creations to take home. Each student should bring a thumb drive to store photos on.

Chess Camp - Ages 6-16

Introductory-Advanced USA Chess is the premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Campers experience chess instruction and play in a fun-filled environment designed to improve their skills, whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. Fee includes trophy, chess set, and much more. Please visit www.activelearningcamps.com for program details. Registration must take place directly with USA Chess and not through Rocky Hill School.

Gamebuilder Video Game Creation Camps - Ages 6-16

Active Learning Services’ video game creation camp use our custom designed curriculum that provides campers with the ability to learn to program a video game using step-by-step instructions. Campers will learn about the history of game design, design concepts, game styles, and more. There are no prerequisites. All video creation programs are half-day programs that can be combined with additional Active Learning Service or SEA offerings to make a full day camp.

New! Kodu Video Game Creation-Adventure Style - Ages 7-16

In this program, campers will have the option of learning how to program using a Microsoft Xbox controller. Children will create their own custom world to navigate within this location. Within this world, campers will create tasks including escaping a sewer maze, survival mode, outwitting rivals, creating decoys, and collecting bonus items. The use of a Xbox controller is optional and supplied by the camper.

Video Game Creation - Platform Style - Ages 8-16

In this program, campers will build a game described as a “platform” game like Sonic or Mario. Campers will have a blast as their characters progress along a path (like a journey) doing the impossible, while overcoming obstacles and opponents and conquering the Big Boss. Starting with a brief overview of basic arcade style video programming, campers will focus their time on learning programming skills that expand their characters movements, such as jumping and bouncing between multi level playing fields.

Scratch- 3D Animation - Ages 8-16

Campers are introduced to programming by creating short story animated movies with a focus on fun. Students will create animated stories using scratch animated tool which allows them to program interactions between characters. Campers will use a gallery of 3D characters, scenery, and custom animations that are designed to help develop skills as well as provide the opportunity to broaden their imagination.

WORKSHOP

This workshop is for the budding author. Participants will explore important elements of serious writing, such as personal style, elegant word choice, and writing for an audience, incorporating each into their own work. This camp offering is designed to help young authors find their inner voice, to create and share original pieces with peers and to prepare their work for “publishing”. To complement their written work, authors will illustrate their stories and create their own book covers.

This course helps students learn “how to learn” and manage the demands of school. Students learn “active” study strategies to help them retain more information and increase their independence. Students participate in activities that help them uncover their learning styles and understand how best to use their strengths to address their difficulties. They learn step-by-step methods to approach their assignments and meet deadlines, easing homework anxiety. Additionally, this course provides concrete strategies and techniques to improve writing. Students learn the mechanics of editing, proofreading and polishing written work. A progress report and binder with support materials and resources is provided at the end of the course.

This quintessential high school course teaches the vital skills to be successful in school and life. Strategies learned can increase test scores and GPAs, and boost student confidence. Each student creates a binder with the indispensable information presented during the class in order to have as a reference for the upcoming school year.

TRAINING

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT)

Objective: Assist at Rocky Hill’s Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) by leading and helping in all activities. Supervise campers and help in smaller group activities, while taking direction from SEA staff. Counselors will be trained and certified in Infant, Child, and Adult CPR.

Qualifications: Students entering grades 6-8 with outgoing personalities, senses of humor, and strong desires to lead by example. Must have excellent speaking skills and enjoy working with younger children. You must have your own transportation to camp and prior attendance at SEA camp is a plus. Must have a professional letter of recommendation (non-family).

Cost: $210 per session
