The Hochkönig was not always such a grim, inaccessibleand snow-coered place as you see it today. The sunshone warmer, the wind blew more gently up there and,instead o a glacier eld, there shimmered a erdantlygreen alpine pasture. All the way down in the alley, youcould een hear the sound o the cowbells.But not all the sounds came rom the mountain tops:high-spirited, strapping dairy maids led a ery rambunc-tious lie. They laughed, sang and partied both day andnight. They had the armers order them the most deli-cious morsels and nest wines rom Salzburg. And oh

boy, did they know how to cook!.Lie was good, but this also made them reckless andimpudent. They plastered the pathway with cheese, ba-thed in milk and threw butter at one another or un. Theyhung siler bells around the horses’ necks and gilded thesteers’ horns.
