than being at the summit, has instead moved to the foot of the Hochkönig. The culinary treats and wines from Salzburg are still there, as are those high-spirited dairy maids, though they have since become more well-be-haved and hospitable. Anyone who comes here in search of lodgings will definitely be received with open arms. So join us, make yourselves at home, eat and drink, party to your heart’s content. And be sure to tell your loved-ones back home that the »Übergossene Alm« is a place where you never need to fear thunder, lightning or flood. That is something we have long since put behind us.

The Hochkönig was not always such a grim, inaccessible and snow-covered place as you see it today. The sun shone warmer, the wind blew more gently up there and, instead of a glacier field, there shimmered a verdantly green alpine pasture. All the way down in the valley, you could even hear the sound of the cowbells. But not all the sounds came from the mountain tops: high-spirited, strapping dairy maids led a very rambunc-tious life. They laughed, sang and partied both day and night. They had the farmers order them the most deli-cious morsels and finest wines from Salzburg. And oh

boy, did they know how to cook!.Life was good, but this also made them reckless and impudent. They plastered the pathway with cheese, ba-thed in milk and threw butter at one another for fun. They hung silver bells around the horses’ necks and gilded the steers’ horns. The people in the village grumbled that they might also be consorting with the devil.One evening, an old man appeared at the alpine hut dressed in a brown pilgrim's cloak, carrying a hiking pole in his hand, with a hat drawn low over his face. very humbly, he asked for shelter. But the dairy maids laughed
