Shift Happens

Teresa• Teresa will pose a question based on the Shift Happens video and allow participants a few moments
to answer it in teams. • She’ll bridge the information in the video to Talent Development’s approach to curriculum. She will
talk briefly about the Adolescent Literacy Teaching and Learning Framework, which is our answer to the Shift Happens video.
• Her portion will take about 15 minutes. Then we’ll shift to the CPRW overview and example activity. They are outlined in the slides that follow.
• The CPRW activity is a simulation of our Research and Discourse component. It will ask participants to complete a brief research assignment (they’ll read an article that advocates for school districts to not allow students to receive zeros), to share their findings in a particular way (they will need to challenge each others ideas and clarify their own), and to solve a problem based on what they’ve learned and their prior knowledge. Research and Discourse is based on the exploration of abstract concepts. The abstract concept the group will explore is ‘accountability’.
• Following the simulation, we’ll open the floor up for questions.

CPRW Defining
Characteristics College Prep Reading and Writing (CPRW) is a first semester or full-year literacy course designed to support the meaningful application of Grade 11 ELA content.
Historic and current world events provide the backdrop for this content, and it is mastered through processes like: discourse, research, collaboration, problem-solving, analysis, and evaluation.
