I’m looking forward to celebrating at the Club and helping ensure our members and guests have a great time with their family and friends sharing a meal, a drink and each other’s company.

This summer we’ve made some big improvements to benefit our youngest customers. Our kid’s menu at Henry’s has expanded, and we’ve upgraded the playroom with more fun games to play and better prizes to take home. These improvements have been road tested by some experts in our household and given the big thumbs up.

Of course this Magazine is full of a dazzling array of great value deals

and promotions available throughout summer for Members of all ages.

Dear MemberIn this issue of Members Magazine we’ll be sharing our memories of Christmas Holidays as well as providing what we hope is a wide range of reasons to make the Southern Cross Club part of your festive season celebrations.

In my family Christmas holidays were synonymous with the beach.

Every year Mum and Dad would load my four older siblings and I into the car and we’d make the journey to our holiday house in Anglesea, on Victoria’s Surf Coast.

As a youngster, Christmas meant celebrating and spending time with family.

We’d spend day after day on the beach, searching for crabs in the rock pools and learning how to surf as big a wave as we could muster the courage to take on.

Looking back, I can see those ‘killer’ waves were actually little more than a small swell but at the time they seemed huge.

They were endless summers and I look back on them fondly.

The other special thing about Christmas 2014 is that it’s my first at the Southern Cross Club. The staff keep telling me the Club’s pride in togetherness and family values is never stronger than at this time of the year.

drink and to fill each other in on their plans for Christmas.

I always enjoyed catching up with the Club’s regular patrons in the lead up to Christmas and hearing about the gifts they’d chosen for their children or grandchildren or where they were going for their end of year holiday.

The patrons really were like family to the staff and I’m proud that custom continues today.

Now as president I get to enjoy the best of all worlds – celebrating Christmas with my wife and two daughters at the Club as well as the staff and the members and guests.

What makes it even more special for me is that I met my wife Sonja at the Club when we were both working at the Reef and Beef Restaurant.

Of course the Club is open on Christmas Day now and with its beautiful decorations it’s a

They say Christmas is the season to be jolly, but I also believe it’s the perfect time of year to head to the Club.

Christmas at the Canberra Southern Cross Club is somewhat of an institution in my family.

As a teenager I can fondly recall my brother and I excitedly tagging along with Mum and Dad every festive season, eager to take in the atmosphere and hustle and bustle of the Club at one of its busiest times.

Back then the Club wasn’t open on Christmas Day but in the days and weeks surrounding it, the Club was the place to be.

There was always such a strong sense of family and community spirit that really reverberated around the Club at that time of the year and it was a treat to be a part of it.

We’d meet family and friends there to wish them well for Christmas and New Year and it became somewhat of a running joke to see if Dad would order the schnitzel at the Golden Grille.

He did, every single time.

When I started work at the Club as a trainee manager in 1989 I noticed a real camaraderie among the staff, particularly at Christmas time.

It became somewhat of a tradition for staff from all areas of the Club to come together for a celebratory

Dear Member

“The Club is open on Christmas Day...

it’s a wonderful place for our patrons

to celebrate”

From the President...wonderful place for our patrons to celebrate.

One of the truly touching Christmas events the Club puts on is the Pensioner Christmas Party, which is a free lunch for pensioners who are members.

This year we expect to provide a banquet for up to 700 people over two sessions on December 1st and 3rd.

The party fits well with our family-friendly ethos and it’s heart-warming to see our members celebrate with old friends or make new ones.

I’m also proud that the Club is sponsoring the Canberra Carols by Candlelight for the 13th consecutive year.

It’s a really well attended event that is focused on the community and truly captures the spirit of Christmas.

Whatever your Christmas holds in 2014 , may it be a safe and very merry one.

StarRewards

Members can celebrate the New Year with gusto from January 5th with our 5:1 points redemption offer for Star Rewards. For one month, from January 5 to February 5 inclusive, you’ll receive five times the value when you redeem your points for food and beverage at any one of our four Venues, Woden, Tuggeranong, Jamison and Yacht Club.

As you know, your Membership card is the key to earning points on your visits to the Club. Just make sure you swipe your card every time you enter the Club at the Rewards Centre kiosk, present it to our friendly staff when purchasing food or beverages or entertainment tickets and of course insert your card into gaming machines when playing.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised how quickly your points can add up, and with a redemption rate set at 5 times your earning rate the rewards are great.

Here’s an example. If you’ve come for dinner and a few drinks with friends three times since June and presented your card each visit,

plus swiped your card on entry and even had just a small flutter on the pokies then you’re likely to have earned around 300 to 400 points. That alone is enough to redeem for a couple of schooners or one of our $8.90 lunch specials during the 5:1 bonus period.

You can redeem the 5:1 at all our restaurants and Bars including Chong Co upstairs at Woden, our signature restaurant Peppercress at Tuggeranong and even Snapper On The Lake at the Yacht Club.

We think Star Rewards is the best rewards program around. So if you want to compare it to other Club programs or even to the rewards offers from supermarkets and airlines, you’ll find your points go much further, giving you more value each time you visit the Club. If you have any questions about how to get the most out of the program just ask any one of our Venue Managers, Brian, Matt or Gus or our friendly reception staff when you enter the Club.

Whether it was celebrated in war affected Britain or sunny Canberra, Christmas has always been a joyous time of year for me.

Of course the method of celebrating, the presents and the feasts couldn’t have been more different, but the spirit of the occasion and the happiness I felt never changed.

I was born three years before the Second World War. We lived in a rambling house with five other families and Christmas festivities included exploring the attics and the cellars with my siblings and the other children.

Along with the war came ration books that dictated how much meat, fruit and vegetables each family could have.

So on Christmas morning it was a absolute delight to find an orange or tangerine at the bottom of your stocking, which had been fashioned from a pair of mother’s heavily laddered pantyhose.

We didn’t have a lot of toys so I particularly remember the Christmas I got Beryl, my first doll. Her hair was painted on her china head, she had a papier-mâché body and Dad made me a cart with wheels for her. It was wonderful.

It wasn’t until my husband, Fred, and I had children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that we truly began to understand the joys of giving and receiving presents.

Around Christmas time, my husband Fred and I enjoy going to the Canberra Southern Cross Club at Tuggeranong.

We joke that we live under the front counter as almost everyone knows us by name and we always receive a wonderful greeting from all of the staff.

Gus, the manager, always stops to say hello no matter how busy he is.

We often watch as the Christmas decorations are put up at the Club and it really makes you feel happy and helps you get into the spirit of the season.

Every year Peppercress Restaurant, Valley Grille and Carvery and Henry’s Family Restaurant have an enjoyable Christmas menu that’s something to look forward to.

We also like to put our tickets in the barrel to try and win one of the wonderful Christmas hampers.

I’ve got my fingers crossed my ticket is pulled out this year and in the meantime I’m penning a letter to Santa with a polite request for diamonds!

Merry Christmas and may 2015 be kind to us all.

Mary Wells.

WHERE TO CELEBRATE

17

Sarah McDevitt Duty Manager, Tuggeranong

I started working at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club in March 2008.

Christmas is my favourite time of year, it’s a relaxing time to spend with family, exchange gifts and enjoy great food.

I am part of a big family so our Christmas celebrations are stretched out over two days and include lots of food, decorations, presents and catching up with the family.

I take my two kids (Sophie 7 and Lachlan 5) to stay at my Mum’s house overnight on Christmas eve here in Canberra so we are all together on Christmas morning. The whole family spends the night at my Mum’s house.

My favourite tradition is the children leaving out milk and fruit cake for Santa. My children love to check first thing on Christmas morning to see if Santa has eaten his cake and if the reindeer have eaten their carrots.

Michael Bloxham Duty Manager, Woden

I started working at the Club in 2007 as a casual. I took on the traineeship and I am now a Duty Manager

Christmas to me means spending quality time with my family, and making an effort to give something to those who are less fortunate than I am by buying something to put under the giving tree.

One of my favourite traditions is getting a photo with Santa.

I like to celebrate Christmas with lots of traditional food, family, very close friends and a few cold Coronas.

Jason Lowe Duty Manager, Jamison

I have worked at this venue for 10 years. I was employed with Wests Rugby club and was lucky enough to be kept on when they were bought out by the Southern Cross Club.

Christmas is obviously a time for people to come together and celebrate, but more importantly I feel it is a time to take stock of what’s important in life. It’s a time for families to show the love they feel for each other and to be grateful for the beautiful country we live in and for all the blessings we have in life.

I work most Christmases. It’s a great day to work because everyone is in such a good mood. Our customers are always in the Christmas spirit, and our staff are one big family so we really look after each other. Once work is finished, it’s the usual eat too much and drink too much.

Christmas is a time for spoiling kids and there’s nothing I love more than being uncle Jase and seeing the joy my nieces and nephews get from Christmas. I don’t get to see them as much as I would like to, so when I do I have to spoil them rotten.

NEW LOOK HEALTH CLUB

19

There’s some extra heavy lifting going on after hours at the Southern Cross Health Club this month, as a major upgrade is in progress.

“We’re excited to be staying at our great location on Irving St in Phillip and investing in refurbishing the buildings, upgrading the equipment and improving the grounds.” said General Manager, Mark La Brooy

Outdoor works, which started in October, include improving gardens and pathways, levelling the bowling green, re-marking parking spaces, updating signage, and introducing AstroTurf for floor work and a multifunctional outdoor training space.

“It’s fantastic timing for everyone to enjoy the new and improved outdoor training areas, so they can

feel and look great for Christmas and the summer holidays.”

Things are shaping up inside too.

“We’re getting more equipment and upgrading some machines. We’re also refurbishing the buildings—repairing wear and tear and water damage, repainting inside and out, updating lighting, upgrading sound systems, signage and reception, and upgrading bathroom and change room facilities.

“We’re serious about being more than just a gym. We want to create an even better experience for our members by providing quality

services in high quality facilities ensuring we remain the best fully serviced health club in Canberra. All up, we’re investing half a million dollars—it’s a major makeover.”

But not everything is changing. Health Club members will still enjoy all the benefits of the familiar and central Irving St location, including free parking, friendly staff and the wide range of programs for all ages.

So if you’ve been thinking about joining or renewing membership, there’s never been a better time.

CHEF’S CORNERPeppercress Restaurant & Bar presents modern Australian seasonal cuisine influenced by contemporary cooking techniques and an appreciation of the best quality ingredients available from Australia’s fantastic natural larder.

Our ‘nature to plate’ philosophy is very simple and is a true reflection of my passion for the finest, freshest local Australian seasonal produce. As a result, the produce we select is farmed ethically and grown with love, passion and tender care.

My cooking style at the restaurant reflects the culinary journey I went through in some of the greatest restaurants and hotels in Europe, Asia, America and Africa where I worked under some true legends of the cooking world.

Since opening its door Peppercress has become a favourite among diners in the valley and in a short time has won awards such as a best restaurant in 2014 and 2012, plus three gold medals in chefs cooking competitions organized by Clubs ACT.

Over a period of time I have formed a strong bond with most of our fishermen and farmers and have had the privilege to see the amount of work it takes to nurture a small plant or animal and watch it grow, then harvest it.

The passion they put in their produce certainly makes you want to be very respectful and not waste it.

At Peppercress we endeavour to only use the best produce in the season when it is at its peak. Our Barramundi comes from Northern Territory, our Wagyu beef is from Tajima, where we can trace the blood line back to the first sire, our lamb is from Cowra, and our Petunia Ocean Trout is farmed by pioneers Peter and Una Rockliff (OA) in the pristine waters of East Devonport in Tasmania.

Its my pleasure to share a this simple recipe for Tasmanian Whisky Cured Petunia Ocean Trout. Made from fresh ingredients, it is easy to prepare, can be done in advance and I’m sure your family and friends will love it as much as I do.
