Prudence! A Virtue for August “Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern

our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it; the prudent man looks where he is going. It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience.

The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment.” (CCC #1806)

Christian fellowship and community service by integrating the Gospel message with a liberal arts educational program in the

spirit of joy of St. Philip Neri.

Our Vision Every Oratory student believes the

Noche de Alegría 2016 “The Flight into Egypt”

This year’s Noche de Alegría fundraiser continues to support the school’s technology initiative, Project SMART- Phase II. While we do our utmost to keep technology current, and strive to be financially prudent, there are many computers nearing the 10 year mark, rendering them obsolete. With the constant advances in systems and software, new computers and software are imperative for the continued success of our students and teachers.

Thanks to the generous support of our families and community, a portion of the profit of $130,298 will supplement the cost of the following items:

• Computers • Educational Software • Professional Development

Enrichment Programs Title III and Bilingual Services

The Pharr Oratory of St. Philip Neri School System once again collaborated with the local education agency, the PSJA Independent School District, to complement the Oratory System’s International, bi-cultural/ bi-lingual model. The program entitled “Building Fluency through Readers Theater” is a federally funded initiative for enriching English Language Arts. Fatima Saldaña, an English Language Specialist, sponsored by PSJA, expanded upon the materials for The Readers Theater Program. Making use of the works of William Shakespeare, she provided students with a research proven method for developing fluency in English. Only qualified students participated in the program.

Our Patron Saint

Saint Philip Neri

Our Motto

From the Shadows and Darkness into the Light

School Song: With Song of Joy

With songs of joy my heart does singOf mortal beauty to beholdAs dreams divine a wondrous springWhere new creations can unfoldFor this God planned a place for meIn halls where Philip’s sons do striveTo turn the souls of men made freeTow’rd Triune Truth and Love alive.Into my hands God put this worldWith pow’r and grace and love sublime;Into my trust His task unfurledWith humble fearlessness divine.Within the cloistered walls I lovewhere I was schooled in Neri’s bentTo set my sights on heav’n above,That, thus, my earthly life be spent!

During the school year of 2015-2016, a team of researchers from the Center for Bilingual Studies: Engaging Families, Learners, and Communities at the University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) selected our school to conduct a study focused on identifying and highlighting advantages of bilingualism. Research has shown that bilingual children, in particular, have many strengths in social cognition. Their center hopes to raise awareness of the assets our children are developing that will prepare them for their bright futures! Leading their team is Amy Weimer PhD. Dr. Weimer is a professor of psychology at UTRGV and currently serves as the center’s associate director. Dr. Weimer is supervising this study along with graduate student in psychology, Daniela Kuri. Mrs. Kuri is conducting this study as part of the master’s thesis, and as a bilingual student herself, she is very excited to be part of this project. Their team of research assistants consists of very motivated and highly skilled individuals who are helping with the completion of this study. Among them are: Lucila Lopez, Melissa Garza, Francisco Sierra, Isela Stephens, Cindy Gonzales, Aitza Morales, and Liliana Flores. Liliana is a former student from our school and is very glad to come back and be part of this interesting study.

Parent Volunteers

We thank God for the loving parents that work so hard for the excellence of our School System.Their suggestions are an indication of their commitment. We would like to implement all of them, but at times we lack the wherewithal to put them into practice right now. Don’t let this discourage you from continuing to offer your heart felt recommendations.

Sr. Cynthia A. Mello, SSD, Superintendent of Schools (Diocese of Brownsville) delivered the 14th commencement address to the Oratory Athenæum for University Preparation Senior class of 2016. The Pharr Oratory family thanks Sister Cynthia for the many insights the young graduates will take with them. Sister Cynthia deeply touched the hearts of everyone when she asked the graduating students to take a moment to stand up and turn around to look at all the people in the audience that helped them reach this new milestone in life. Sister Cynthia not only helped the young graduates to appreciate those who had helped them, but she also reminded everyone to be grateful for those who had sacrificed for them in life.

“Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the last of them, you did it to me.” - Matthew 25:40

We thank the Pharr Oratory Schools’ families for making the school a Charity priority. As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we rely on the generosity of our extended community to help enrich the lives of our students by inspiring them to become individuals with Christian Character,  Catholic lay leadership, Christian fellowship, and a community service spirit.

Drop-off Map

School Absences: Failure to attend classes deprives students of the opportunity to learn. If a student must be absent, one of his or her parents should call and advise the school before 8:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. The parent who calls should give the name of the student, the name of his or her homeroom teacher and the reason for the absence. When the student returns to school, he or she must bring to the office a note signed by one of the parents with the same information given earlier by phone. 1. In order to ensure a justified absence for

your child after an illness, a parent and/or doctor’s excuse is required the day your child returns to school. After that day, excuses will not be accepted and your child’s absence will be considered unexcused.

2. Make-up work will be posted on Power School. Click on any subject’s letter grade to view all assignments for that subject, completed and incomplete.

3. Absences due to vacation plans will not be accepted. Such absences will be unexcused, and teachers will not

provide lesson plans and homework in advance nor will the student be allowed to make up missed homework assignments, quizzes or tests.

4. Fraudulent excuses obtained by parents may lead to termination of services.

Parental Excuses: A written parental excuse is required for absences, or early dismissals. These written excuses will become part of your son/daughter documentation, and this must include the following:

• Printed full name and homeroom of student

• Date(s) of absence(s) or early dismissal

• Time to be dismissed (early dismissal)

• Reason for the absence or early dismissal

• Signature of the custodial parent/guardian

• Guardian/parent phone number
