Only 3 Ladies entered this competition – clearly all the others are magnificent chippers!.Judy, Helen and Yvette completed the activities of chipping off the green, from the bunker and behind the bunker. I’m not certain how useful the practice was, because at one stage, after many goes,

Helen noted on her sheet that she was getting worse! Anyway, it was a close run event, with Judy winning. However, I only believe that was because she chipped in, and her ball went straight into the hole, earning her 10 points in one go! ( I’m not a bad loser – honest!).

Ladies Club Championship

Won this year by Lynda Sage with an aggregate score of 189, an excellent two rounds of golf.

Runner up was Yvette with 198 and in third place Jackie Long with 200.

Ladies Open A great day was enjoyed by 48 Ladies, of which 29 were visitors, playing a 4 ball Bowmaker

competition. As usual, the course was in wonderful condition , and many of our visitors commented on this - well done and thank you to Steve and his groundsmen. Ryan and his team produced a special menu for the day and were kept busy providing us all with

refreshments. The Stockwood Ladies were magnificent in their support of the Competition and their donations for the raffle brought in £211.00.There was also a “Spot the ball” competition which made £38.00.Our sponsorship donations added up to just over £750. In total we will have made approx. £1000.00 for Barnardo’s on this one day – fantastic! The day would never run so

efficiently without our band of “Merry Men” helpers. Wally was our starter and he did a great job. However, I do worry about him peering through his binoculars all the time. I don’t know if the ladies realised, but he had a full view of them on the 3rd! Alan Gregg, Chris Bale, Wilf Bates and Trevor Wilmot did their best in helping/hindering the ladies on the registration desk. I think they all imagine their jokes are good and witty – not so certain if the ladies appreciate them quite so much, and Ian Haddon did an admirable job putting scores on the computer. David Knight and Ian Young sat by the 10th tee ready to greet us players with squash and biscuits.

Thank you chaps, for your support. Prizes on the day went to

Club Matches Club Avalon league matches Avalon A Captain Darren Thorne

9th April Taunton & Pickeridge Home Lost 3 - 12.5 23rd April Vivary Park A Away Lost 4½ - 1½ 7th May Long Sutton Home Won 4 - 1 After a disappointing start to the season the A team have bounced back with 2 comprehensive wins. The first at home to Long Sutton with a 4-1 win with Connor Wilkins/Dave Wilkins, Alex Rudge/Pete Dawson, Steve Ogden/Darren Thorne & Joe Harvey/ Lee Hobbs the victors.

14th May Oake Manor Home Won 4 - 1

This was followed with another 4-1 home win this time against Oake manor with Pete Dawson/Alex Rudge, Lee Hobbs/Joe Harvey, Connor Wilkins/Dave Wilkins & Andy Carter/Darren Thorne the winning combinations. Thanks to everyone for the effort they're all putting in.

21st May Oake Manor Away Lost 4 - 1 18th June Burnham and Berrow Home Won 4½ - ½

A very good win of 4.5/ 0.5. The winning pairings of Steve Ogden/ Dean Evans, Connor

Wilkins/Dave Wilkins, Joe Harvey/Lee Hobbs and Mike Golder/Pete Dawson and Simon Waddington/ Darren Thorne gaining the half. A couple of special mentions thanks to Mike Golder for stepping in and helping out and also to Simon for putting up with Darren's erratic play.

2nd July Vivary Park A Home Won 4½ - ½

10th July Burnham and Berrow Away

Avalon B Captain Andy Pearce 21st May Minehead Home Lost 3½ - 1½

Not the start the ‘B’ team were all hoping for, with the final result being a home defeat. The

Minehead team, the majority of were single-figure handicappers, with only two off 10. Andy Yeatman and Clive Oldfield were the top performers with an excellent 5&4 win over their captain,

and a very creditable half from Chris Hughes and Steve Goodwin after being three-down after

three holes. There were defeats for Ryan Craymer / Jeff Player, Simon Mattock / Andy Pearce and Barry Puddy / Rob Payne

Page 4: Summer Newsletter - Stockwood Vale · 2017-08-22 · Summer Newsletter Welcome to the latest edition of the Stockwood Vale Golf Club newsletter. Ladies Section Winter Pairs round

8th May Enmore Away Lost 1 - 4

Another tough day and a defeat against a group of big-hitting, low-handicappers. However, I

think that their frequent use of adjoining fairways would have got them into a lot of trouble at Stockwood. Chris Hughes and Steve Goodwin maintained their unbeaten start to the season, halving their match, as did James Vanstone and myself. The pairings of Kevin Blakeley / Stuart

Reed , Andy Yeatman / Clive Oldfield, and Jeff Player & Simon Mattock all came in second.

4th June Worlebury Home Won 4 – 1

At last a pleasing victory against a Worlebury side who were more closely matched to our range of handicaps than were Minehead or Enmore. New to the squad was Joe Garland, who stepped-in

to help us out, and partnered me to a 2 &1. Top performance came from Jeff Player / Clive

Oldfield who handed out a comprehensive record defeat of the opponent’s captain and his partner by 8 & 7. Solid performances also from Stuart Reed / Steve Goodwin, Barry Puddy / Simon Mattock. The one result that prevented a clean-sweep was Ryan Craymer and Andy Yeatman's 2&1 loss to Worlebury's only single-handicap pairing.

18th June Oake Manor Home Won 3½ - 1½

A very satisfactory victory in this match, against an Oake Manor side who have struggled a bit

more on their travels so far this season. The big winners this week were Stuart Reed / Steve Goodwin, Ryan Craymer / Clive Oldfield, Andy Yeatman / Joe Garland. The pairing of Jeff Player and myself scrapped a half neither playing particularly well. .

2nd July Minehead Away Lost 4 – 1

Thanks to everyone who managed to make the long trip to Minehead. It was another tough day

at a course that always seems to strongly favour the home team, and it didn't help that we had seven players who hadn't played there before. We ended up with the same overall result that we have had the previous couple of times that I've played there, a 4 – 1 defeat. A big well-done to James Vanstone and Simon Mattock in winning 3&2 and getting our only win.

10th July Enmore Park Home Won 3 – 2

A hard-earned 3-2 win, over one of the better teams in our division, with a good number of very

low-figure handicappers. Excellent 6&5 win by Chris Hughes and Joe Garland was backed up with fine wins from Andy Yeatman / Steve Goodwin and an brilliant performance over the last couple

of holes by James Vanstone / Simon Mattock saw the team home with a win.

16th July Oake Manor Away Lost 4 – 1 Our third away match ended in defeat with only Kevin Blakeley and Barry Puddy achieving a win. It could have been better I hear - though at the moment I would settle for a 1 hole win on the last with opponents missing a short putt if it would get us a few more points.

Avalon C Captain Keith Parker 10th April Tall Pines Home Won 3½ - 1½ The first match for the C Team in the new Division 4 was at home to Tall Pines. Some changes to the team saw us loose Ryan Craymer to the B Team and Damian Hughes to family

commitments. Joining us this year are 3 rookies along with 2 former B team members Paul

Trenchard and Dennis Brown. Leading us off in this year’s campaign was vice captain Bill Bailey and regular partner Darren Hendrickson but despite a spirited fight lost their match. Second pair

Glen Jennings and rookie Adam Meaker won their match 4&3. Ken Wotherspoon and Nathan Heavens also won their match 4&3. Steve Saint and Mike Parry didn't have the best of starts when Mike took a foot long divot to just make it just past the ladies tee and keep his dignity intact. They kept fighting right to the last though to come in with a half. The traditional last pairing of Mark Hulin and Joe Lovell started this year as they finished the last winning their match 7&6.

16th April The Mendip Home Won 4 - 1 A change to our traditional first pair this week with Rob Davis and Paul Wheeler winning 4&3.Glen Jennings and Adam Meaker made it 2 wins in a row with a 3&2 victory. Captain Keith Parker paired with an injured Ken Wotherspoon managed to earn a hard fought 3&2 victory. Chris Davey and Nathan Heavens, who was suffering with a potentially deadly case of man-flu, struggled through to a 2&1 victory. The normally steadfast final pairing of Mark Hulin and Joe

Lovell lost 2&1.

The home win against The Mendip gave the ‘B’ team a dream start putting them to the top of the table early with 19 points. A place they hope they can keep all year long. 21st May Wells Home Won 3½ - 1½

Our third home game in a row was against Wells who we last played before they were promoted from Div 5 to 4 the year before us. Bill Bailey & Darren Hendrickson led us off with a great win followed by Adam Meaker and Glen Jennings fighting through the last few holes to half their match. Captain Keith Parker paired up with Ken Wotherspoon in an attempt to prevent any further donations to the driving range balls, but despite this they held a control on the match to win on the 16th. This was duplicated by a new pairing of Nathan Heavens and Chris Davey.

Coming up against a pair of very low handicap players on top form saw an unusual loss for the normal pairing of Mark Hulin and Joe Lovell.

3rd July Wells Away Half 2½ - 2½ First away match of this season and after several weeks of inactivity we find Wells course in usual pristine condition in glorious sunshine. Bill Bailey and Darren Hendrickson led us off in

their normal fashion with a fabulous win. Our recent 'Club Nett Champion' Glen Jennings did not let a large cut in his handicap affect his and his partner Adam Meaker's winning ways. Paul Trenchard made his competitive debut pairing up with Keith Parker but despite a spirited fight could not find the form to get any points, although he did make friends with a cat on the course. The cat appeared to know Paul’s game well as he found the safest place to lie down while Paul was taking his shot was straight in front of him. Paul Wheeler and Rob Davis could not replicate earlier form and lost their match early leaving the match 2-2 with Mark Hulin and Chris

Davey dormie 2 up and unfortunately, they could not get that final half needed so a halved match was the final result. 9th July Long Sutton Home Won 4 - 1

With Bill Bailey finding a wrist injury still causing issues causing him to withdraw at the last

minute so Keith Parker stepped in with Darren Hendrickson who powered the pairing to a fine win. Glen Jennings and Adam Meaker who continued their great run with another fine win followed by Nathan Heavens and Chris Davey with Mark Hulin and Joe Lovell making it 4 wins out of 4. A full house was prevented by a strong almost scratch pairing shooting strings of birdies and a few eagles defeating Steve Saint and Mile Parry

Somerset Bowl Captain Keith Parker

17th April Wells Played at Farrington Golf Club Won 4 - 1

It is a great honour to captain a team for Somerset Bowl. It is also very stressful knowing that due to the knockout format, it could all be over all too soon. Past captains had taken their team to the Quarter-Finals so there is that success to try and live up to. In picking a team to play a

Foursomes format match, I felt they did not only need to be good players, but also good friends who know each other's games and work well together. Unfortunately some of those chosen had to drop out which meant I had to stand in with a volunteer Simon Waddington. I thank Simon for stepping in but we both played terrible golf and could not get to grips with the recently hollow tinned greens. Luckily all the other pairs were victorious and a noticeable mention to Joe Harvey Snr and Darren Thorne who played a masterful match to win 7&5. Graham Jenkins and Jeff Player were first out and won 2&1 followed by Rob Martin & Darren Buckle also winning 4&3.

Steve Ogden and Tony Brogden, who have together won earlier club KO cups in foursomes, had a great game and put their match to bed 3&2. A fantastic performance to win 4-1 and put us through to the next round at Saltford against Bath. I hope all those amazing guys can keep these results coming.

Bath Golf Club Played at Saltford Golf Club Lost 3 - 2

The course was in pristine condition on the hottest cloud free day of the year and this was later

to play an important part in the result. A fine result for Steve Ogden and Tony Brogden and also new pair of Lee Hobbs and Robin Deeprose giving us a great 2-0 start. A sadly off-form Darren Buckle and Rob Martin were unfortunate to loose their match and Darren Thorne with last minute stand in Steve Goodwin found no matter what they did, their opponents found a way to hole implausible shots to defeat them. 2-2 with the last match on the course found themselves 1 down on the 18th tee. A duffed shot by their opponents saw Jeff Player and Graham Jenkins nail their approach shot to the pin to claim a pleasing hole win. After the 18th green at Saltford they

struggled up the steep hill path pleased with getting a halved match until I had to break the news to them that they had to play extra holes to a result. Exhausted and dehydrated they made their way to the 1st tee again but giving away 11 shots was too much to get one more hole win so a 3-2 loss was disappointing.

Obviously my chance at being captain for the Somerset Bowl series was a lot shorter than I had

hoped, but I cannot fault the great players that played their best every hole and I think that luck was really not on our side. I wish the very best of luck to any future teams.

Seniors section 17th March Kendleshire Home Lost 3½ - 2½ 24th March Wheathill Away Won 4½ - 1½ 31st March Woodspring Away Lost 4½ - 2½

5th April Farrington Away Lost 5½ - 1½

The Seniors faced a strong Farrington side and lost the encounter. Derek Bryant and Martin Walter gave Stockwood any early lead with a win by 4 & 2 over Bill Sims and Alan Elkington. A half by Peter Cheeseley and Mike Lock were the only other success on the day.

. 12th April Worlebury Away Draw 4 – 4 The Seniors played their fourth consecutive away match, due to our changing rooms being revamped and gained a creditable 4 – 4 draw. Martin Walters with new partner Barry Jenkins

again gave us an opening win by 2 & 1 over Pete Melhuish and Mike Strong. Mike Newell & Peter Hooper won their match against acting captain Barry Newson and Dan O’Connor 3 & 2, our captain being only 1 over after the front nine. Other wins were Paul Trenchard & Keith Sheppard 3 & 2, and Peter Mumford and John Fry 1 up.

21st April The Bristol Away Lost 6½ - ½

Page 7: Summer Newsletter - Stockwood Vale · 2017-08-22 · Summer Newsletter Welcome to the latest edition of the Stockwood Vale Golf Club newsletter. Ladies Section Winter Pairs round

The Seniors played a very strong Bristol side, captained on the day by their vice-captain Errol White. Colin Harvey and Greg Thomson gave Stockwood a good early start with a half against Tony Edwards and Mike Watt. Acting Bristol captain Errol White, playing off a 21 handicap played to 7 over and defeated Mike Newell and Peter Hooper 6 & 5. Bill Ferrer playing on his own and giving 6 and 9 shots to his opponents was well beaten 9 & 8.

3rd May Clevedon Home Won 4½ - 3½ 5th May Tall Pines Away Lost 5 - 1 17th May Thornbury Away Won 4 - 3 23rd May Knowle Away Lost 6 - 1

2nd June Shirehampton Home Won 6½ - ½ On a cool morning with a light breeze a strong SVGC team defeated Shirehampton with a result which belied the true story. Three of the SVGC wins were won on the 18th, a further match was won by 2 & 1. The biggest result of the day saw Colin Harvey & Greg Thomson win 6 & 5.

4th June Broome Manor Home Won 6 - 0 7th June Thornbury Home Won 6 – 1 On a very muggy hot day SVGC Seniors defeated Thornbury in a match where old acquaintances were renewed. Derek Bryant playing against an old football team mate and Mike Newell reliving

life in the Civil Service nearly 30 years ago with an ex colleague. Dave Christopher was making a final quest appearance for the team, also playing against an old acquaintance.

14th June Wheathill Home Won 5½ - ½ On a breezy date with threatening rain clouds which changed into a warm sunny afternoon SVGC Seniors defeated Wheathill. The biggest win saw Paul Trenchard and Mike Lock beat their

opponents by 7 & 5. Nearest the pin on the 4th was won by Chris Hyldon of Wheathill. 16th June Cumberwell Home Won 3½ - 2½ This was the first friendly match between the two clubs. The Cumberwell Captain praised the condition of the course and hoped this match would become a regular home and away fixture. Nearest the Pin on the 4th was won by Paul Atkins of Cumberwell.

Team: Mike Newell, Martin Walters, Brian Clutterbuck, Malcolm Gray, Peter Cheesley, Joe Payne, Peter Mumford, John Fry, Derek Bryant, Alan Gregg, Bob Winter and Andy Pillinger.

21st June Lansdown Away Lost 5 – 2

On a day of mixed fortunes SVGC suffered defeat for the first time in five matches. Our best results were a win for Tony Little & Alan Gregg by 7 & 6 and a second win by Greg Thomson & Keith Sheppard by 6 & 5.

Seniors Merit and Eclectic.

Well done to Brian Clutterbuck & Rob Payne - top two in the Winter Merit.

Also congratuations to Robert Payne & Martin Walters who tied for top

Seniors Somerset Bowl Round 2 v Enmore Win 3 - 2

On a breezy afternoon at Clevedon, SVGC played a strong Enmore team containing 7 or 8 single handicap players. Our opening pair of Brian Clutterbuck and Pete Dawson were narrowly defeated 2 & 1 in a closely fought match. Martin Walters and Geoff Kent romped home 5 & 4. The third pairing of Mark Curtis and Bob Mason closed out a win on the 19th hole. Peter Cheesley and Peter Mumford won their match convincingly 4 &3. The last pair, Bob Cook and Tony Little were beaten by 1 hole in another closely fought match.

Seniors Somerset Bowl Quarter Final v Burnham and Berrow Win 3½ - 1½ Burnham and Berrow fielded a strong side with the majority of their players being single figure players. Brian Clutterbuck and Pater Dawson, Guy Norfolk and Chris Coles (making his Seniors

debut) gave the SVGC team 2 wins.

Martin Walters and Geoff Kent halved after 18 holes and continued up the first, as matches have to be played to a result if the match is tied. They were recalled half way up the 19th hole when Peter Mumford and Peter Cheesley brought home our third win, after being 4 down at one stage. The only defeat was suffered by Mark Curtis and Bob Mason.

a very commendable 39 points playing off 8. His tee shot pitched a foot away from the hole and dropped in.

Andy Pearce was playing for the Stragglers at Tall Pines on 6th June, and got a hole-in-one on

their 13th; 155 yards, with a 9-iron! More important (obviously!) was that we won the match.

Captains Day 11th June

The forecasted light rain held off for club captain Dave Hurst’s ‘Hawaiian themed’ captains day

Thank you to all those who helped out, sponsors and those who donated auction and raffle prizes.

The competition set by club vice-captain Darren Thorne was a four man ‘Texas Scramble’ with

most people getting into the spirit of the day wearing Hawaiian shirts. A special mention to the ladies team, managed admirably by Keith Parker, who wore matching shirts.

The evening entertainment was provided by Morf with his ‘Hotshots’ disco – and a photo booth which proved to be a big money spinner on the evening with my son-in-law Simon spending a

fortune on my grandchildren. – Morf was heard to say “Oh no not you kids again

The Pound Trophy 20/20 v Kinnels (Builder Boys)

Brief History

It started off when I suggested we play them to help raise a few shillings for the captains charity

and also at the same time bring people at the club closer together, we wanted to have something to play for so we decided on one pound, I donated a trophy and stuck a pound on it, the pound has a story behind it as well, we were on the 14th and Alex Rudge drove off and said that’s near the green, I drove off and he said I was 20 yards behind him so we had a pound bet the rest they say is history I donated my pound winnings and stuck it on the cup hence the

name the pound trophy’ the first year we played, Martin Edenborough kept score (the scoring is stableford off club handicaps all scores totalled at the end so all players must go to the 18th as every point counts) and believe it or not it was a draw the next year we won but since then I

think 20-20 have won if you look on the cup the date should be on there when it started each year it has got more popular accumulating to around 30 players a side raising over £400 after paying out £180 in prize monies.

The event took place on Sunday 15th present holders 20/20 series to date 3-3.

Page 13: Summer Newsletter - Stockwood Vale · 2017-08-22 · Summer Newsletter Welcome to the latest edition of the Stockwood Vale Golf Club newsletter. Ladies Section Winter Pairs round

A fantastic competition this year, with round 1 being dominated by the performance of Glenn Jennings who hit a brilliant 78 (nett 62) reducing his handicap dramatically to 13. Also worth a mention was Lee Whiteford playing off 18 hit an 82. On the second day Glenn and Lee Hobbs

could not repeat their performances from the first day and dropped down the table. While Glenn was stood on the first tee nervously waiting to go Jerry Baker attempted to boost his confidence by saying

“Glenn, remember luck is temporary class is permanent, let’s hope your luck holds out”

After a great first round 72, Robbie Brice’s second round came undone between the four holes

from the 13th to the 16th where he scored 6 over par. Rumours got back to the club that after a poor shot he flung his clubs down on the floor. Connor Wilkins in the clubhouse was heard to cheer and shout

“Great it’s not just me and my dad”

Robbie’s brother Ian after a first round 79 had a fantastic second round and hit a 72, playing the

last 5 holes in 3 under par.

Seniors Club Championships On a very wet and windy first day scoring was unusually high but not unexpected. Leaders at the end of the day was Malcolm (Bill) Smith 88, followed by the big guns in Tony Brogden 89 and

Brian Cluterbuck 89. 17 players qualified for day 2 which was a complete contrast to the first day with no rain and very little wind. Scoring, as expected, was lower with only Richard Bull playing below his handicap shooting a gross 85. Guy Norfolk shot an 82 to take the clubhouse lead until Peter Mumford shot the best round of the day with a 79 to become seniors champion for 2016.

Golf is a game in which you yell “fore,” shoot six, and write down five

Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, the probably shot

an eight.
