Summer Programs at Berwick Academy offer a variety of fun and intriguing

academic, sports, and enrichment programs for children entering kindergarten

through grade 12 on the beautiful Berwick Academy campus in

South Berwick, Maine.

We are in easy driving distance from many New Hampshire and Maine towns,

including Portsmouth, Dover, the Hamptons, York, Kittery, and Kennebunk.

COLLEGE ADMISSION ESSAY WRITING

DATE: June 28, July 20, or August 26 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

LOCATION: Jackson Library

GRADES: Students entering Grade 12

CLASS SIZE: Up to 15 students

COST: $90 for 1 session (Pick 1 session to attend only)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The College Essay workshop leads students through the process of crafting a

powerful college essay. From brainstorming topics to the fi rst draft, students build a personal

statement that reveals their voice and character. Discussing examples of good and bad essays,

as well as reading advice from deans of admissions, students develop the skills to write a

memorable and impressive essay. This workshop demystifi es one of the most stress-inducing

elements in the college application process.

INSTRUCTOR:

Moira McKinnon has served as Berwick’s Director of College Counseling for 16

years. She earned a BA in English from Georgetown University and has taught both English

and history. She is a member of both the New England and National Associations of College

Admissions Counseling; the Associatioon of College Counselors in Independent Schools;

and the College Board. She has presented at several conferences on college admissions and

fi nancial aid.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

Featuring Guest Singer/Songwriter John Englander

DATES: June 20-24 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

LOCATION: Lower School Rioux Room

GRADES: For selected students in Grades 8-12

COST: $200

CLASS SIZE: 12

REQUIREMENTS:

Students may apply by submitting: 1. application fi lled out by the student

2. recommendation from an English teacher

3. writing sample (no more than 500 words)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Exposure to art, music, nature, and Berwick Academy’s beautiful campus comple-

ments daily writing and discussion. Students may explore nature writing, the short, short

story, poetry, plays, or lyrics. The workshop is entirely individualized. Each writer sets a

goal and designs an approach to accomplish that goal. Pre-write activities include move-

ment and meditation. The students write in different locations around campus. John

Englander will attend several sessions and lend his expertise across various genres.

INSTRUCTORS:

Mary Anker teaches at Berwick Academy Middle School. Before moving to the

New England seacoast, she taught English at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School

in New York City and in the Scarsdale Public Schools in Scarsdale, New York. She has been

a reporter, copy writer, and free lance editor. She is currently working on a manuscript that

was accepted by Breadloaf Writer’s Conference. She is also writing poetry and has been a

featured reader at the Press Room.

Singer/Songwriter John Englander built a local following and was a regular

favorite at the famous Bluebird Café when he lived in Nashville in the late 90’s. His

critically acclaimed CD, River Song, has been compared to Jackson Brown and Neil Young.

Performing Songwriter Magazine wrote that John’s songs are “deep and honest tales of

transformation, escape, and redemption.” John is a Yale graduate who has worked for

Saturday Night Live. He currently works for Facing History and lives in Boston with his

wife and two children.

OTHER:

Bring towel, dance clothes, dance shoes (ballet and/or jazz), bathing suit, water, snack,

lunch, and change of clothes.

DESCRIPTION:

The BA Dance Camp will offer a variety of dance technique and composition classes.

Technique classes will be in modern, ballet and jazz with explorations in Hip-hop, African

dance, Bollywood and Musical Theater. The dancers will explore the tools of composition and

will have the opportunity to choreograph a group piece. Campers will be grouped by both age

and skill level. The week will culminate in an informal student performance.

Sasha Randall currently directs the dance program at Berwick Academy. Along with

teaching classes at BA, she works with SONAR dance out of Portland, Maine, the New England

Dance Project, and is a consultant with the Maine Arts Commission. She has trained, performed

and choreographed nationally. Sasha holds a B.F.A from Long Island University and continued

her post-graduate studies at Mills College.

LITTLE BULLDOGS DAY CAMP

DATES: Session 1: June 20 - 24 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Session 2: June 27 - July 1 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (ends at 1 p.m. on Fri. July 1)

LOCATION: Lower School Kindergarten Room

GRADES: Entering Kindergarten- Grade1

COST: $200 per session

OTHER: Wear comfortable play clothes that can get messy! Bring lunch, snacks, drinks,

bathing suit, towel, sunhat, and sunscreen.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Join us for Little Bulldogs Camp for a week of adventure and fun. We believe

that children arenaturally curious and we have created a unique program for children

entering kindergarten and fi rst grade that will stimulate their imagination and will just

be plain fun. Each day children will have an opportunity to complete various art, music,

outdoor, science, reading, and dramatic play projects in the warm and safe environment of

Berwick Academy’s Lower School kindergarten classroom. Day camp teachers work with

young children throughout the school year and have the knowledge and skills to take a

positive approach designed to excite, engage, and support your child. Exploration will be

our theme. Rain or shine we will create and explore and most of all enjoy ourselves! We

look forward to welcoming your child to a week (or two) of fun and adventure at our Little

Bulldogs Camp.

INSTRUCTOR:

For the second year, Kelly Martin will be working with Little Bulldogs Campers.

She is currently a third grade teacher at Berwick, and has taught both Kindergarten and

second grade through her 17 years at the Academy. Additionally, Ms. Martin has taught

preschool aged children and enjoys working with children of all ages.

MULTI-SPORTS DAY CAMP

DATES: Session 1: June 20-24 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Session 2: June 27 - July 1 9 a.m - 4 p.m. (ends at 1 p.m. on Fri. July 1)

LOCATION: Athletic facilities, local pool, and Dover Bowl

GRADES: Entering 2-7

COST: $200 per week

OTHER: Campers will be going to Dover Bowl on Thursday for 2 hours and to a local

swimming pool every afternoon. Please bring a towel, bathing suit, fl ip-fl ops, sneakers,

sunscreen, a cooler with lunch and snacks, plenty of drinks and appropriate, comfortable

clothes.

PROGRAM GOALS:

Multi-sport participation enhances the playing level of a youth

athlete, reduces the risk of overuse injuries, and can eliminate athletic burnout in later

years. The focus of the instruction will be on teamwork and cooperation, along with sport

skills and proper technique. Campers will experience games of tennis, basketball, soccer,

baseball, softball, and fl oor hockey.

Morning: Floor hockey, tennis, basketball, soccer, and group games

Afternoons: Sport and recreational activities, open swim at a local pool, and

bowling at Dover Bowl on one day.

DIRECTOR:

Marilena Sanborn has been teaching physical education to kindergarten through

grade 6 at Berwick Academy since 1997. She has her national soccer coaching license as

well as her “D” license from the US Soccer Federation.

INSTRUCTORS:

Bill Clapp has been teaching Upper School mathematics at Berwick Academy

since 1990. He has coached varsity lacrosse and junior varsity hockey for seventeen years.

He has organized lacrosse leagues and camps and has been involved in coaching U-8 soccer

for the last four years.

Mark Summers has taught at the elementary level (grades 2, 3, & 4) for 23 years.

He has been teaching grade 4 at Berwick Academy since 2001. He has coached youth

soccer from the recreation level through U-12 for over 10 years.

Holly Bennett, MS, LATC, has been the athletic trainer at Berwick Academy for

eleven years. She has her M.Ed. in Health Education and teaches at the seventh grade level.

Instructing for the American Heart Association, she offers certifi cation in CPR and First

Aid for coaches, faculty, staff, and students.

ROCK’N SCIENCE (+ 3 R’S 2!) CAMP

DATE: July 11 - July 15 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (ends at 1 p.m. on Fri. July 15)

GRADES: Students entering Grades 1-5

CLASS SIZE: 20-24 students

LOCATION: Lower School science classroom, Lower School literacy room, potentially

one other Lower School classroom, Lower School playground area.

COST: $200

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Joel Hawes would keep its past science focus, but would add reading, writing and

arithmetic as well. The program would be a creative blend of practice, rote, exploratory,

hands-on and in the end…creative problem solving.

JUMPSTART THE SCHOOL YEAR - WRITING WORKSHOP

DATES: August 22, 23, 24 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

GRADES: Selected students Grades 6-12

LOCATION: Ms. Anker’s Middle School Classroom #2

COST: $200

CLASS SIZE: Up to 8 students, fi rst come, fi rst served

This workshop is for students with a documented language based learning disability or for

students who have been recommended by their teachers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

With an emphasis on the mechanics of writing, students will improve their sentence

structure, paragraph development, thesis statements, organization and development of an

expository essay, introduction of quotes, and vocabulary expansion. Students will use their

summer reading as a reference point for their writing. The workshop will be completely in-

dividualized. Instruction will be based on a method devised by Judith C. Hochman, Ed.D.

INSTRUCTOR:

Mary Anker teaches English and Social Studies at Berwick Academy Middle School. She

holds a B.A. from Marylhurst University and an M.A.T. from Lewis and Clark College. Be-

fore moving to the New England seacoast, she taught English at Columbia Grammar and

Preparatory School in New York City and in the Scarsdale Public Schools in Scarsdale,

New York. She has taken classes that specifi cally address teaching writing to students with

language based learning disabilities. She was a student of the Basic Writing Skills classes

held at Windward School Summer Institute, White Plains, New York and taught by Judith

Hochman, Ed.D.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Berwick Academy Study Skills Program is a two-week enrichment program

directed toward the improvement of effi ciency and profi ciency in study skills. The program

is organized into four sections by grade appropriateness. Instruction will focus on effective

approaches to academic work. These study skills will include:

• Preparing for research papers and essays

• Preparing for and writing examinations

• Setting goals

• Improving organizational skills

• Creating better general time-management skills

• Increasing memory skills

• Retaining and recalling information

• Reading texts with greater comprehension

• Listening and taking lecture notes

INSTRUCTORS:

John Downey is a Latin and history teacher at Berwick Academy. In his twenty-

fi ve years at Berwick, John has helped countless students organize themselves to reach

their fullest potential. The experienced study skills staff, comprised of Berwick Academy

faculty members, looks forward to this program every year. Participation in this two-week

program should result in improved learning performance, self-confi dence, and academic

achievement.

• Follow Route 236 for about 10 miles to stop sign in South Berwick and take right onto Route

• Take Maine Turnpike to Exit 19 (Wells exit.)
