MASKED PARADE
WOW! What a fantastic, colourful and fun sight
Tahunanui School made at the Masked Parade. It was
great to have such a good turn out from all classes. Thank
you to all the children, families and staff who participated
and made this possible. A BIG thank you to those parents
who helped classes to make the masks and to Dave
Pearson for coordinating the event.
SCIENCE ROAD SHOW Last Wednesday 15 people went to the Science
Roadshow. Four other schools watched the show as well.
There were really cool experiments. One was dried ice
in a glass of normal water and bubbles came out. When
he picked up the bubbles and pressed them together it
transformed into carbon dioxide gas.
After the first part of the show we
got to look around at the displays.
There were heaps of different things
to look at or to touch. One was showing how glass bent light and another one was
a camera that could see infrared heat. One of the most impressive experiments was
making elephant toothpaste. The stuff is mainly ingredients from the kitchen and
when they get together they make an enormous amount of foam. Look it up on

THE GRIMSTONES Last Tuesday 8 other students and I went to see the Grimstones. It was a wonderful puppet
performance about Martha Grimstone who wanted to know how her father Mortimer died and did
Mortimer really love her. She asked her baby brother Crumpet who had magic powers and saw that
Mortimer died in a storm and loved her very much. The lady who wrote the story is deaf and did sign
language really fast. It is a lovely gothic tale. It was great! - Ruby Room 12
HEALTHY SMILE - HEALTHY CHILD
Did you know? It’s good to give teeth a rest by limiting snacks to 2-3 times a day between
meals. Avoid foods that stick around the teeth like raisins, fruit leather, roll-ups or dried
fruit as they stay in the mouth for a long time. Instead aim for ‘Teeth Friendly Snacks’ such
as bread, cheese, raw vegetables, nuts, unsweetened popcorn or cereal, and limit any sweet
foods to meal times. - Nelson Marlborough Community Oral Health Service

PARENT AND TEACHER INTERVIEWS Once again we had a high turnout
for parent teacher interview with a
97% take up. Those parents who
were unable to attend will have the
opportunity of a catch up over the
phone. We are heartened by the response as
research tells us that school and home collaboration
is important for student success.
WELCOME BACK Next year we welcome Paul Drummond back to
school as our principal after a year as the President
of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation. He is
looking forward to coming back after a challenging
year in his role. Paul has worked hard in presenting
the views of the Education Sector to the Ministry and
parents of New Zealand students.
GARDEN GROUP
Most Fridays during lunch time up to 20 students
meet with Janine, Kirsty and Jac at the garden. They
plant, weed, compost, design and raise
seedlings. At least twice a term the produce is
harvested and students learn to cook up a tasty dish.
These new dishes are often sampled by students in
the playground.
J.R. McKENZIE YOUTH EDUCATION FUND The J.R. McKenzie Youth Education Fund are
inviting parents to apply for funds for 2013 to help
towards school uniforms, clothing, footwear and
stationery. The fund is available to help towards
special tuition/course fees, special grants for
glasses and special grants for special needs students
as well. For application forms see Jan at the school
office. Applications must be in by 12 November.
SURVEYS At the end of last term we did a student engage-
ment survey with Yr 3-6 students. The results
were very positive.
- 89% of students were often and very often proud
to be at Tahunanui School (our 2012 target in the
Annual Plan was 80%)
- 87.5% were often and very often happy at
school.
- 75% of students often and very often saw stu-
dents respecting and helping each other.
- 85% of students often and very often volun-
teered for school and class activities.
- 95.7% of students often and very often try hard
at school.
WOW! These are pleasing results and are indica-
tive of the great school and parents community we
have here at Tahunanui School.
SCHOOL VALUES
We all know how important it is to be able to get
along with others and have friends. Our school
value of GETTING ALONG at Tahunanui School
means:
- working cooperatively with each other
- resolving conflicts
- showing tolerance of others’ differences
JARGON CORNER An important part of reading is understanding
what the author is telling us. Visualisation,
prior knowledge, asking questions, forming
a hypothesis and making connections are all
techniques to help students understand what they
read. A student reads text and then may say:
“I have a picture in my head of …” (Visualisation)
“I know that because ……” (Knowledge )
“I wonder why …..” (Questions)
“Maybe its because ……” (Hypothesis)
“It’s like …….” (Connections)
Although a student may be able to decode words
at a high level, the actual comprehension of text is
extremely important.

It is time to remind parents and
students that sunhats are required

expected to wear a brimmed hat
(not a cap) during play time and lunch time.
SCHOOL WORKING BEE The Tahunanui Drive embankment is in need
of a major tidy up. I would appreciate the help
of 10 willing adults on Saturday 27 October,
10am to 12 noon. We will remove old man’s
beard vines, pull ivy and where needed trim
the trees and shrubs.
What do I bring? Heaps of
enthusiasm, sense of humour,
chainsaw, hedge trimmer,
secateurs, grubber, shovel or spade. Please
wear sturdy closed in footwear or gumboots.
In the interest of everyone’s safety, please
leave the children at home.
