Dear Alumnae and Friends of Villa Maria,

It has only been a month or so since we

sent another class of young women off

to college. The 2016-17 school year was

marked by National Merit awards, another

state swimming championship, recognition

of several All-Catholic musicians, and of

course, the graduation of the Class of

2017. Graduation is a bittersweet time.

We are so proud of the 107 young women

who leave Villa to pursue their college

degrees and careers, but it is hard to say good-bye. This

class earned 231 merit scholarships that totaled $15.3 million

dollars. We are so grateful to their parents for allowing us the

privilege of educating their daughters. We also thank all the

young women who shared their talents with us over these

past four years. The Class of 2017 certainly left their mark on

the Villa community.

This year also included the continued engagement of our

alumnae through regional events, Homecoming and Hall

of Fame activities and the alumnae luncheon. Our hope is

to continue to bring more and more alumnae and their

families back to campus. We are so grateful to all the

alumnae who attended events, mentored students, or

simply stayed informed by following us on social media.

The alumnae are the foundation on which we continue to

build the mission of Villa Maria.

I hope that summer allows everyone some time to rest,

recreate, and rejuvenate. We need everyone in the Villa

Maria community well rested and enthusiastic to continue

the proud tradition of excellence that we all have come to

expect.

Please know that you are all remembered in the prayers of

the Villa community and that we count on your prayers for

the continued success of our mission. Have a wonderful

summer and we will see you in September.

Sincerely,

Kathy McCartney

In her address at graduation, Jessica highlighted some essential life skills she learned during her time at Villa. She eloquently stated that “kindness is the single most important quality a person should possess. It will turn acquaintances into friends and enemies into allies.” She said “kindness builds trust and heals fractured relationships.” She implored her class to “lead with enthusiasm” and to “find people who will support your learning.” Lastly, Jessica suggested that we all “take risks because that is how you learn some of life’s greatest lessons.” Jessica is a very well-rounded scholar. She is a National Merit Finalist, a member of the National Honor Society, and the Music Honor Society President. She participated in chorus and Madrigals. Taking her own advice and taking risks, Jessica was a member of the Spring Track Team this year. Jessica will be continuing her academic career at the University of Virginia where she will be part of their Honors Program.

Hope Reynolds is a young woman with many gifts, and she shared them in many different ways as a member of the Student Integrity Society, the Respect Life Club, and both the National and Latin Honor Societies. Hope was also part of our State Champion Swim Team. In her address at graduation she reminded the congregation of the Class of ’17 class motto, “It’s about the journey not the destination.” In preparing for her speech, she reached out to some classmates to ask them what they learned at Villa. Hope shared that her classmates said, “I learned to be friends with everyone, to be true to yourself, that it is okay to fail, that being unique is good and that God calls you to his own special path, and that you never know someone’s entire story so don’t judge them on the small part you do know.” Hope added that “these answers come from 17 and 18 year old girls, which I think is amazing.” She finished by thanking the faculty, stating, “You have taught us how to show Christ’s presence to others in the world. We leave here not only with the subject knowledge you taught us but also with knowing how to love and serve others as Jesus taught us.” Hope will continue her academic and swimming career at Hope College.

Villa Maria Alumnae Association bestowed its highest honor, the Dr. Elinor Langton Award, on Grace McClatchy. The award is given annually to the senior who consistently shares with her classmates the traits of kindness, humility, faithfulness, joy for life, and a love for Villa Maria. The senior class, along with the faculty, vote for the recipient. Dottie Martin Toomey ’77, President of the Alumnae Association and 1977 Elinor Langton Award winner, made the presentation. She read some of the sentiments shared by Grace’s classmates. They said, “She always has a smile on her face;” “She never passes without a greeting;” “She always sees the best in everyone and puts others before herself;” “She goes about her day with God on her mind;” “She actually inspired me to start to drive myself to church,” and finally, “I can’t think of anyone as humble or as deserving of this award.” When Grace’s name was announced there was a spontaneous eruption of applause from everyone in the auditorium. At Villa, Grace was in Chorus, Spirit Squad, Peer Ministry, and PA Math League, and was a member of the Music, Spanish, and National Honor Societies. Grace will be attending The Catholic University of America in the fall.

Villa Maria alumna Sara E. Lally, M.D. ’90, was the guest speaker for the evening. Dr. Lally, an ophthalmologist specializing in ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital, encouraged the graduates to “live like a hero, find your passion, and fuel your passion. Each and every one of you is destined for greatness.”

In mid-March another Hurricane blew through the natatorium at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. For a phenomenal 7th consecutive year, the Villa Maria Academy swim team captured the PIAA AA Swimming State Championship. The team tallied 240 points and outscored the second place Gwynedd Mercy squad by 115 points. The ’Canes were captained by seniors Olivia Giampietro and Maura McManus, who led the relay teams to two gold medal and one silver medal finishes.

Freshman Katherine Fronzcak, swimming in her first state championship meet, scored an impressive

8th place finish in the 500M freestyle race. Senior Hope Reynolds posted her personal best time, finishing 4th in the 100M backstroke. Although the team loses seniors Olivia Giampietro, Maura McManus, Hope Reynolds, Katelyn Chick, and Mary

Katherine Clark, the forecast is predicting another big Hurricane landing in Lewisburg

for the same time next year.

She publishes on matters concerning marriage, parenting, non-marital households, and the First Amendment religion clauses. She is faculty advisor to the law school’s Civil Rights Law Journal, and the Latino/a Law Student Association, a consultor for the Pontifical Council of the Laity (Vatican City), an advisor to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (Washington, D.C.), founder of WomenSpeakforThemselves.com, and an ABC News consultant. She cooperates with the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations as a speaker and a delegate to various United Nations conferences concerning women and the family.

In addition to her books, and her publications in law reviews and other academic journals, Professor Alvaré publishes regularly in news outlets including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, and USA Today. She also speaks at academic and professional conferences in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Australia.

Ars Liberalis Award for Service

Jacqueline Carroll Cody ’71 received the Ars Liberalis Award for her many years of dedicated service in the community as a loyal servant and judge. Judge Cody has served in the Chester County community since 1980s and 1990s as a senior member of the District Attorney’s office. As a prosecutor, she was one of the first ADAs assigned to handle child abuse cases as a specialty, and helped form the office’s Child Abuse Unit. Judge Cody was appointed to the bench in August 1992 by then-Gov. Robert Casey and confirmed by the state Senate later that year. Judge Cody was selected for a 10 year term in 1993 and retained for a second term in 2003. As a judge, she has overseen a criminal, civil, and Family Court caseload. She has been instrumental in spearheading a variety of programs on the court, including mediation for child custody cases and the formation of the county’s Drug Court system, a model program that extended over the years to include such other treatment courts as Mental Health Court and Veterans Court. Most recently in 2013, Jacqueline Cody was selected as the President Judge in the county, where she will serve for 10 years.

Order of Veritas for Distinguished Teaching

Erik Magness was awarded the Order of Veritas for distinguished teaching. For nearly 20 years, Erik has not only taught Latin at Villa but has embodied the culture of Villa Maria Academy. He has empowered hundreds of young women during his time at Villa to lead lives of spiritual growth, intellectual inquiry and Christian service. Former student Elizabeth Zwaan Milne ’05 presented Erik with the award, and shared that it was in Erik’s classroom that she developed the self-confidence to get in front of crowds and speak, which has served her well in her career as a lawyer.

FEST (Fostering Educational Support Together) was held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Aronimink Golf Club. Members of the Villa Maria commu-nity enjoyed an evening of mingling, bidding and dining at the FEST 2017 fundraiser. The annual event, held again this year at Aronimink Golf Club, was a big success, as party goers bid generously on items like golf outings, front row seats at graduation, designer purses, artwork, and Villa-themed beach chairs and towels. Donors also earmarked separate donations to fund items on teacher wish lists, like mobile glass write-on markerboards, docu-ment camera, and adjustable worksta-tions.

FEST 2017 raised a total of $111,000 to benefit programs for Villa Maria students. This year’s “Call from the Floor” raised $12,525, earmarked for new curtains and renovations for the auditorium.

Thank you to event chair Anna Cozzone and co-chair Jen Pizzi, and all the tireless volunteers who make this event possible. Thank you as well to all the generous sponsors who support Villa Maria Academy and its mission.
