AND NOTESSummer 2013 will be filled with both celebration and change!
On Sunday in July and August we will worship at 9:00 a.m. only; please notethis and mark your calendars. We hope to do sanctuary renovation this summer:repairing and replacing flooring, refinishing pews and kneelers, painting andotherwise restoring our worship space in ways that have not been done here fortwenty-two years.
Elsewhere in this issue you will read that Stephen Black has resigned as ourMinister of Music for personal reasons that necessitate him being near his familyin Kentucky. We will celebrate Stephen’s ministry and bid him “Faretheewell!”before he leaves in mid-August. I hope to have his successor in place bySunday, September 8, 2013.
Frances & I and Don have sold the house in which we have lived for twenty-five years. My answer to “Where will you move?” is “Very close to church andvery friendly for Luke, our golden retriever.” We have several months to move,and I am hoping a change of residence this summer is in store. And, of course,we will be close enough that Don can continue to come home from studies atMarymount California University in Palos Verdes and job with The Port of LosAngeles in San Pedro!
Summer is my favorite time of year. Not only for rest and recreation,baseball and the beach, but Summer is time for remembering significantanniversaries: June 30 (1985) is the anniversary of Frances’ and my wedding atSaint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley. July 4 is Frances’ birthday (youknow she is a “firecracker”, don’t you?). July 30 is my birthday; as BobSattler used to say, “I’m a 1946 model!” And, July 11 is the anniversary of myordination as a priest; yes, this is why “7/11” is important to me. On July 11,2013, I will celebrate forty years as a priest.
In the Chapel of Grace at Grace Cathedral on Wednesday evening, July 11,1973, The Rev’d Dick York, Pastor of the Free Church of Berkeley for which Iwas Deacon preached a sermon titled “Heralds, Prophets and Servants” onIsaiah 61. He quoted this parable according to Bob Dylan:
“Three kings decided that a man named ‘Frank’ was the key tounderstanding the latest Dylan record. They crawled into Frank’s room to seeif he could help them. Frank acknowledged that he was indeed the key to theunderstanding they sought. ‘Well then,‘ said a king in a bit of excitement,‘could you please open it up for us?” Frank, who had been reclining with hiseyes closed, suddenly opened them both up as wide as a tiger. ‘And just how

SUNDAYS AT 10AM: "THE GRABBAG” OR "THE HAT". During thesummer months of July and August2012, we had lively discussions in theDavis Library following worship. Eachperson attending took turns grabbinga piece of paper which had a topicwritten on it such as "hospitality, faith,apathy, frustration, laughter or anger."The selector began the discussion andothers added to it. Do plan to attendwhen you are able. It is informal andfun, -- a good opportunity to add your“two cents’ worth” or just listen. Onenever knows what valuable insightswill be revealed.

far would you like to go in?’ he asked. And the three kingslooked at each other, ‘Not too far, but just far enough so’swe can say that we’ve been there,’ said the first king ”
Then, my friend Richard challenged me: “Decide now,Peter, just how far you want to go in!”
I, then, wanted to go “all in” as I still do now; yet itseems to me that I’ve just begun and have so far to grow.
In “Notes Under the Fig Tree,” another Episcopal priest,The Rev’d Jim Lewis writes, “The Bible is a work of artabout the art of work.” To adapt his list of what that “work”is, Christian communities like ours are to: feed the hungryand confront root causes of hunger and poverty; visit thesick and address hazards that make people ill; welcomenewcomers to the church and welcome folks different fromourselves who are moving into the community; pray forgovernmental officials and work on issues that affect thehealth and welfare of the country; develop an active youthgroup and raise questions about how/why children are beingsubjected to violence and war; organize congregationalworship and address social, political, economic anddemocratic ramifications of organizing for employment.
These responsibilities should give us much to ponder aswe live toward Labor Day. Each of us might well ask, “Ismy ministry fulfilling God’s mission?” “Does what I dobring happiness? ...joy? ...meaning?” “Am I doing whatGod is now calling me to do?”
May our vacations be re-creative.

Jess Peterson will receive his Bachelor of Arts degree inhistory from Stanford University in June. After that hewill continue on at Stanford to work on a master's degreein computer science with an emphasis in human computerinteraction. Jeff's proud parents are Kathleen and MarkPeterson.
Richard Kenneth Welch, grandson of Lynne Ruedy,received an International Baccalaureate from the WesternAcademy of Beijing on June 1. He is taking a gap year inChina to perfect his Mandarin after which he will attendAustin College, where he has received a scholarship andwill continue his language and music studies. His proudgrandmother happily attended the graduation in Beijing.
Guibord Center to offer lecture on'The Bible, Women and Violence'
The Guibord Center will present a lecture by Amy-Jill Levineon "The Bible, Women and Violence" at 1:30pm on Sunday,July 14, at the ProCathedral of St. John, 514 West AdamsBlvd., Los Angeles 90007.
The talk is part of the Special Speakers Series sponsoredby the Guibord Center, which is based at the cathedral andworks to increase understanding among the diverse faithsrepresented in the Los Angeles area.
According to a release from the center, "The Bible hasbeen viewed as a misogynist text that treats women asproperty, sanctions their abuse, promotes theirsubordination, and proclaims the impossible standard ofvirgin mother. How has the Bible been used to preventwomen's flourishing, and how might a more historicallyinformed and theologically aware reading recover the Bibleas an inspirational resource for both women and men?"
Levine is a professor of New Testament and Jewish Studiesat Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Artsand Sciences.
SANCTUARY REFURBISHINGUPDATE
In February, at our Annual Parish Meeting, we agreedthat the parish sanctuary needed to be refurbished and
that our goal was to accomplish this during the summermonths.
The bids for the work came in around $23,000. In theMay Love of Mike we noted that it might cost a little moreif we repair and refinish the South Wing flooring.
To update you on where we stand on paying for the thework that needs to be done, we have a very generous offerof a matching gift of $10,000 to contribute to the projectby June 30.2013. As of this date (June 21, 2013) Membersof Saint Michael’s have donated $11,830. This would coverpainting the sanctuary; repairing and refinishing the pewsand kneelers and repairing the slab and replacing the flooring.
This will be the first time in 22 years that the sanctuaryhas been renovated.
We were hoping that those who pledged this year wouldadd a one-time gift that would make this project possible.
We thank you for your generous gifts and look forwardto begin the project in mid-August.

PRAISE AND WAVES
On Saturday, June 8, at 9am,eleven Saint Michael & All
Angels parishioners made their wayto the beach to participate in "Praiseand Waves." The location of theevent was a stone's throw from theBeachcomber Restaurant in CrystalCove. (Make of note of thisdescription and location, so next timewe have a Praise and Waves Day,you can be there, too!)
Once we made our way from theCrystal Cove State Park parking lotoff PCH, down the windy path andon to the sand, the Saint Michael &All Angels spot was easy torecognize. Brightly colored ribbonsof blue, red and yellow on woodendowels flapped in the wind. We satin a circle in our beach chairs and/or beach towels. It was a time tohuddle up as June gloom morningtemperatures’ low 61, high of 68degrees, made their presence knownto each of us.
A man passing by stopped to askwhat our little group was up to. Hewas a Lutheran and we invited himto join but his morning walk waswith his family and grandchildren.
At 9:05, our time for MorningPrayer and reflection began. MyrnaIreland welcomed the group andshared a devotional about God'screation and the wonders of theocean. (Myrna had created the"Praise and Waves" day in hopes ofencouraging us to slow down andsimplify our lives to make time forthe Lord. What better place to findrest and relaxation than the beach?)
We then sang, "Morning HasBroken".
Next, Julie Jenkins gave a shorttalk on how we can look at a shelland think about our own lives. Juliereflected on Ann MorrowLindbergh's book, "Gifts of the Sea".After Julie's reflection, the group wasgiven twenty minutes to wander thebeach, go for a quiet walk along thecove, simply sit and watch theseagulls and/or listen to the wavespounding on the sand. Walking alongthe beach, there was much to survey.

In the distance, two surfers paddledagainst the strength and height of theswells. Overhead, pelicans flew information. When everyone returnedto the circle after twenty minutes,there was a time of praise. We hadeach been given a 3x5 card to writeour praises on. Melinda Rader and BethBianchi took turns reading the cardsout loud. Here are the praises thatwere written.
“Thank God for our ocean.”“Thank you for this beautiful beach
and morning.”“Sometimes I feel like driftwood
riding along. But knowing where Godtakes me is where I'm supposed to be.”

MISSION AND MINISTRY
[Episcopal News Service, June 11, 2013] The United Thank Offering of theEpiscopal Church has awarded 48 grants for a total of $1,517,280.91 for themission and ministry of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion.The 2013 grants were awarded to projects in 38 Episcopal Church dioceses, sixinternational provinces and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS)Mission offices.
Known worldwide as UTO, the United Thank Offering grants are awarded forprojects that address human needs and help alleviate poverty, both domesticallyand internationally.
The awards ranged from $2000 to the Diocese of Mississippi to $162,817 tothe Diocese of the Dominican Republic.
A total of 86 grant applications were received. The awarding of the 2013grants focused on two (of the five) Anglican Marks of Mission: To respond tohuman need by loving service; and to seek to transform unjust structures ofsociety, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation.
“Grants represented many needs in our world,” commented Barbi Tinder, UnitedThank Offering Board President. “The top 15 rated grants addressed the teachingof gardening and creative food preparation; providing for continuing clean water;providing wood for warmth during cold months; providing for many forms ofspecial needs for children; creating buildings that built community.”

funds/contributions received through offerings from the well-known and easilyrecognizable UTO Blue Box.
This year, the Grants Committee conducted all of its work electronically, thereby“going green,” a process initiated by Sarita Redd, who was president when shedied suddenly in January, and Tinder.
“As a result of the Grants Committee’s initial effort in creating the new grantingprocess, and the participation of the entire Board in implementing the neededsteps, the United Thank Offering Board can now state that the footprint of theBoard in terms of environmental impact has been dramatically reduced,” explainedTinder. “Last year the board estimated approximately 10,000 sheets of paperwere used in the granting process; this year the only paper to be used will be 86official letters to grant applicants with 86 envelopes, and 48 printed awardcertificates to be presented to grant recipients whose applications were funded!A total of 134 pieces of paper and 86 envelopes! An enormous reduction of useof trees!”

MYSTERIOUS SUMMER
Here are two 2013 recommendations for lovers of Anglican/Episcopaldetective fiction -- one new and one recent reissue by a favourite author:
“Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night” (The Grantchester Mysteries)By James Runcie. 2013.

The site comes almost 20 years after theelectronic news service was first launched.Since then subscribers around the worldhave received thousands of news articlesvia email.
“This site brings the AnglicanCommunion’s ability to share its stories oflife and mission to a whole new level,” saidJan Butter who is the Director forCommunication at the Anglican CommunionOffice.
“Until now we’ve been restricted tosending news stories to people’s emailinboxes. Anglicans and Episcopaliansaround the world can visit the new site for,not just news, but also comment, featurestories, podcasts, videos and photos. Wehope that the diverse content helps to reflectthe richness and variety found across ourAnglican Communion.”
Mr Butter added, “Existing subscriberswill still receive email alerts, but just one aday summarising the newest content on thesite.”
In a comment piece written exclusivelyfor the new website, Archbishop ofCanterbury Justin Welby highlighted theimportance of effective, grace-filledcommunication between Anglicans, sayingit was part of the gift of the AnglicanCommunion.
“If the Communion is a gift, thencommunication between us is part of thatgift. This means sharing insights into whatGod is calling us to do, wherever we are.It means sharing our witness and ourinspiration.”
He added, “There have been times[members of the Anglican Communion]have used communication as a tool to hurteach another. But we must remember thatabove all we are called to share the love ofChrist with the world. That means nothingless than communicating in a way thatreflects Christ – a way that is loving andgenerous, patient and forgiving.

As some of you know I had achance to get away recently and travelto the Pacific Northwest. It is countryI had never seen before, and I hadseveral times to be alone in nature. Itwas certainly a welcome respite fromthe rigors of the last three years atUSC, and a time for rejuvenation.Driving through the Willamette RiverValley in Oregon, or the farmingregions of the Sacramento RiverValley, reminded me of my home stateof Kentucky, and the farm I lived onfor a period of time in my childhood.Perhaps thoughts of my familycolored those reminders, as I amcoming upon a major change in mylife, one that will result in a change atSaint Michael’s.
In mid-August I will leave California,and consequently my position at SaintMichael and All Angels EpiscopalChurch, to be closer to my family.Specifically, I wish to be closer to myparents, who are getting older andstarting to really feel the cumulative
effect of years of hard work and thenatural progression of aging. WhileI may not end up in Kentucky, I willcertainly be a lot closer, and thereforemore able to be of assistance.
USC has been very accommodatingin aiding this transition, as I am notquite done with the requirements forthe Doctor of Musical Arts degree.While I finished all the courseworkthis past May, I still have qualifyingexams and a dissertation to complete.But I have worked it out so that I canaccomplish most of this away fromLos Angeles. I am grateful to thefaculty for finding a way to make thathappen.
Likewise, I am grateful to Fr. Peterfor hiring me at Saint Michael’s! Iam aware that it was not an easyprocess, and that a great deal ofdeliberation took place. It has been atremendous opportunity for growth,and a wonderful place for fellowshipand making music. I also thank themembers of all the choirs for theirdedication. (I found myself shakingmy head in amazement as I wrote thatlast sentence, thinking of all that we
have done together in such a shorttime…). And most especially, I thankthe parish, whose support has meantso much to me. It will be hard to leavemy perch in the east wing – very hard– and I will carry many fond memoriesof the time I’ve spent among you herein sunny Corona del Mar. I lookforward to following Saint Michael’sfrom a distance, and hope to haveoccasion to come back and drop in onyou all in the future.
